Kagome opened one eye, peeking out to see twin gold staring her down. "Is it working?"

"It is not." He said, and she knew she wasn't imagine the sulk she heard in his tone.

"Maybe if you told me what it is you're looking for? It might help." I might help.

It was an odd change to her day, to be sitting around and doing nothing, to be unaware – or as unaware as she could be – of the duties of the jewel. Kagome was accustomed to feeling a literal weight around her shoulders, and although this little field trip could be a break for her, she was hard-pressed to just ignore responsibilities. Not ones that had been hers for so long.

She had to make it count.

"Most priestesses dislike youkai." Youko stated, lounging back on one of the trunks closest to him. "You do not appear to carry the same disdain."

"There are good ones and bad ones…just like humans."

"That is a remarkably lenient viewpoint. Yet your only training consists of how to use your abilities to fight my kind."

There was something in his posture, about the purposely lazy way he projected himself against the tree that clued her in. "You know, you told me you didn't want me to use my powers in your presence."

"Yes."

"But it seems to me," she continued on "that you're worried I will anyway."

His grin was tight against his face. "Mikos are not known for playing fair."

It was a gamble, letting him know more about her before she knew anything about him, but she had already bet away a week of her time and the protection of her friends. "Trust is hard without any evidence…so instead of a demonstration, how about a story?"
