Sorry for the last short chapter, this is supposed to be part of it, but I was kicked off the computer before I could finish and I didn't think I was going to be able to get back on afterwards so I decided to just post what I have. Anyways, here you go.
I got to Rusty's right at the last minute and was able to check in without technically being late. Although my boss wasn't too happy with how close I cut it. I grabbed my apron and a notepad and pencil and went to Tess, one of the other workers here. She was the only one who knew my actual age but that was only because I dropped my school ID once. I had it with me because I had to go straight to work from school.
"Okay, so the usual sections?" I asked her and she nodded as she took down her order. "Great" I said heading to one of the tables in my section. I brought my pen up to the notepad and spoke before looking up.
"Welcome to Rusty's, I'm Mitchie and I'll be your waitress this eve-" I had looked up to smile like we were paid to do and froze midsentence when I saw who it was. Dallas sat in front of me with a cup of coffee watching me. It took a second to process my thoughts as I realized this was my chance to apologize.
"Oh my gosh, Dallas I'm so sorry about today. I don't know what I was thinking, I was just so nervous, and then I was scared because I know you're most likely my sister but I was just so worried-" I cut my own rambling and she continued to just stare at me. I sighed. "I'm sorry, you probably don't want to hear it. The specials today are-"
"You work here?" She cut me off this time and I just gave her a confused glance.
"Um, yeah" I said.
"a full shift?" I saw where this was headed.
"Okay, I can see your not ready to order, I'll just be-" I started to walk off when she grabbed my wrist. In an instant i yelped and jumped back out of her grasp. I saw the look of hurt on her face and I realized what I just did. "Sorry, I didn't mean it, It was a reflex" I admitted. Just then Tess came up by my side.
"Is everything okay?" She asked. Tess was super protective of me, much like Alex. When the twenty four year old had found out I was only sixteen, she took it upon herself to look after me. She must have heard me yelp and then seen me jump back.
"It's okay Tess, I was just overreacting" She gave me a disbelieving look. "I'm fine" I told her sternly and she left, though I could tell it was reluctantly.
"Michelle," Dallas started.
"Uh, it's Mitchie, I don't really like that name" I told her and she nodded.
"Mitchie, I realize that I wasn't there when you were growing up"
"And I know that wasn't really your fault. I bet the smartest thing you did was leave that house, how were you supposed to know about me?" She nodded.
"I know, but still, I can't help but feel bad. I know how our mother is, and believe me when I tell you I know what you've been through. I don't want you to ever be scared of me, because even if I don't know you completely, I would never lay a hand on you, You're my sister, I know it"
"I know it too. The truth is, I just didn't want to admit it. I didn't know your intentions, and I was worried that I would have to go back with you to Texas, and I don't mean I wouldn't want to live with you, it's just my life is here. Alex is here, and she and her family mean everything to me, I couldn't live without them." She chuckled as I just stood there kind of awkwardly wondering what was funny.
"Mitchie, I don't live in Texas. I dont live anywhere. For the past 17 years I have spent my life moving around and never stopping. I'm fine with living anywhere, and I'm not going to pressure you into living with me or anything, but if you did want me in your life like that, I would go wherever you wanted. Even if that means just staying here. I just want to make sure your doing okay and by the looks of it I'd say you are, but i don't really like the Idea of my little sister living alone when she's more than welcome to live with me."
"Dallas, I-" I was cut off by my boss.
"Mitchie, get to work! I don't pay you to chat with the customers!" He then turned and walked away.
"Sorry" I apologized. "I've got to work. So, are you going to order something?" I asked.
"Um yeah" She told me her order and I wrote it down before smiling at her. "Okay, your order will be ready soon" I said liked I was supposed to then went to deliver her order to the chef. I waited a few more tables and got Dallas her food. Soon the diner started clearing out and there were only about five customers left. My shifts were usually slow since not many people eat around this time. After Dallas had eaten she started ordering coffee and having it refilled just drinking it, reading a magazine. I was halfway through my shift so I called for my break and went to sit across from her.
"So, that must be the most interesting magazine to have sit here for" I glanced at my watch. "Over five hours" She chuckled setting it down.
"I just thought this was the perfect night to drown myself in coffee, and what better way to do it than reading about 'Miley's bad decisions'" She showed me the cover of the magazine and I laughed.
"You know, I don't think she's half bad. I'd still be a fan if she wasn't naked all the time, but thats my only complaint" I said raising my hands in mock surrender.
"I see, so are you finished up here?" She asked and I gave her a confused frown. "You know," She gestured around the room. "Work?"
"Oh, " I said finally getting it. "No, I've still got about another four hours" I told her honestly.
"So you do work a full shift..." I sighed for what felt to be the millionth time tonight.
"Dallas, don't start." She rasied her hands in surrender much like I had a moment before.
"Okay, Okay, It's none of my business I understand that. But don't you think maybe this is a bit much? State law says 16 year olds are limited to shifts between 7am to 7pm" She told me.
"I know, but I'm not sixteen..." I told her and she now looked confused. I pulled my fake ID from my pocket and handed it to her.
"Mitchie, you weren't born-" I covered her mouth before she could finish.
"I know, but it was the only way I could get the job." I told her. "I needed the money, but I swear I turned in my resignation" I admitted.
"Oh. So do you still need the money? because I can-"
"No, it's fine. Alex's parents found me out and so I'm staying with them now"
"Can they support you financially?" I nodded.
"Not sure if you knew, but her parents are Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, though now that they're married, they're going by Russo, as Selenas actual last name." Dallas' jaw dropped and she stared at me wide eyed.
"Your joking, aren't you?"
"No I'm dead serious" I told her. "Here" I took out my phone and showed her a selfie of me and Alex with her parents sitting in the background watching us curiously.
"Wow" Was all she could say. "I used to be a fan, but then I made the mistake of getting Connie hooked on them."
"Connie?" I asked.
"Yeah our... mom" She said the word almost with venom.
"Oh, duh" I said facepalming. "I must be more tired than I thought"
"Maybe you should go home and get some rest" Dallas suggested. "You shouldn't be overworking yourself, I mean between school and work do you ever sleep?"
"wait, did I saw that outloud? that was only meant to be a thought." I admitted.
"No, seriously, do you need a ride home? You really should get some rest" I shook my head.
"Nah, I need to finish this shift, and I promised Demi I'd call her when it was over.
"Well then call her now. You look like you could collapse at any moment."
"Dallas I said I'm fine" I snapped at her. I sighed AGAIN and rubbed my eyes a bit. "Sorry" I said quietly. There was a moment of silence before she spoke up again.
"What are the odds" I waited for her to continue. "We worked in the same place around the same age, only I worked at the permitted times" She said glancing at me. "We both were the top of our class in the same highschool, both grew up with a Russo" I felt my jaw drop.
"Wait, what was that last part?" She chuckled.
"When I was like 8, Connie and steve wanted to go on vacation and they didn't want to bring me or the brothers, so they dumped us off at the Russo's doorstep. Selena Russo was 12 years old and she was the first person to be nice to me. We just sort of clicked."
"Really?" I asked wide eyed. It was extremely odd to me that she knew my best friends mother before she was even a teen. How old is she?
"Yep. For two years she was like my older sister. If I had a problem I could always go to her until she turned 14."
"What happened?"
"She got an audition for Wizards of Waverly place, got the part then moved to LA. She didn't know the extent of my homelife, in fact she had never met my parents."
"Oh" was all I could say. I started wondering what Selena was like then. Was she always like she is now?
"You know, Alex is a lot like her, only nicer" She told me as if reading my thoughts.
"Wait, nicer?" She nodded.
"Selena got into fist fights almost daily. She smoked cigarettes, partied hard, drank harder, and was the original Rebel Russo, though no one else ever made the connection. Everyone was scared of her, but that was only because they didn't know her. I don't know why, but she was nice when she first met me, and stayed that way, but I've seen her tell off her own brother pretty harshly. Talk about bipolar" She muttered the last part and continued drinking her coffee. I wanted to ask more questions, find out more, but the manager called me over saying my break was over.
I finished my shift, all the while Dallas watching me the whole time but I didn't mind. I'd lost count of how many refills I had given her on her coffee. I wondered why she was sitting there. Why hadn't she gone home? She sat through the rest of my shift and when I was clocking out I turned around to find her with my jacket. She helped me get it on after I discarded the apron.
"Not to be rude or anything, but why are you still here?" I asked her.
"I wanted to make sure you could make it through you're shift okay." She replied honestly.
"You didn't have to" I pointed out and she shrugged.
"well maybe I did. I wanted to see you were fine for myself." She said and as if on cue, I tripped, falling into her arms. "And I'm glad I did" She said smirking and I blushed in embarassement.
"Pssh, whatever" I said.
