Alex's POV
I couldn't believe that what Dallas had said was right. It just seemed like it couldn't have been possible in a million years, and yet, it was. My mom was a real bad ass rebel in high school. Well, I guess that explained how she was able to take down Mitchie's Mom so fast. With Mom being so experienced in fighting, Connie didn't stand a chance.
After going through more old photos and hearing countless stories of my mother's misadventures, I followed Dallas to her car that she had parked down the street. She drove me home, and the trip was silent, but not awkward. When she pulled up to my house, she bid me a farewell and good luck before she drove away leaving me to face my punishment alone. I feared what my parents might have in mind for me; I took a deep breath in an attempt to calm myself before starting toward the front door. Suddenly I was grabbed from behind and a cloth was stuffed in front of my face. I didn't have to inhale it to know what it was. I struggled for a few seconds before I figured it was hopeless and changed tactics. I let my body go limp as I closed my eyes still refraining from inhaling. Thank goodness Mitchie got me into singing or I might not have been able to hold my breath for so long.
Finally after another minute, the cloth was taken away and I was able to breath again, only I had to keep it in check to make it seem like I was unconscious. I gave it another few minutes before I reacted. Using all the strength I could muster I elbowed my attacker in the face hearing a definite cracking sound in the process. The grip on me loosened and I fell onto the ground before picking myself up and facing him. I had been expecting it to be that pap, but it wasn't. This guy was someone I hadn't seen before. He was a bit on the tall side with sharp features, piercing blue eyes, and jet black hair. He held his meaty hands up to his nose which was spurting blood when I turned to run inside. I was surprised to find that I was no longer at my doorstep, but at least a block away. I must have been to preoccupied trying not to breath to notice he had been walking.
I attempted to run toward my house, which I could make out in the distance, but before I could even get two feet away, my path was blocked by the paparazzi dude.
"You again!?"I was I really getting tired of this guy.
"Tired of him already Alex?" Another voice spoke and I froze; my blood turn to ice just at the sound of it. I was torn between being terrified and pissed the fuck off. I turned to come face to face with the bitch that was none other than Connie.
Mitchie's POV
My eyes flew open when I heard people downstairs. As I strained to hear the voices, I realized that Alex wasn't cuddled next to me, which immediately made me frown. I felt her side of the bed and realized it was cold. She hadn't been sleeping for a while.
Now worried, I sat up just in time to see my girlfriend coming through the door, her nose scrunched up and her eyes narrowed. Just a few steps behind her was Demi, with pursed lips and a wrinkled forehead. Something was obviously going on.
"Mhm?" I managed, not wanting to test my voice right after being asleep.
"Go back to bed," Alex whispered to me in a surprising gentle tone, considering her apparent frustration. She leaned down and kissed me on the forehead. Her lips were cold. I wondered what her mom would think about that.
"Get over here right now, young lady," Demi's voice was strained. I rubbed my eyes and cleared my throat. There is no way I'm going back to be without figuring what's going on.
"Alex, what happened?" I mumbled, my voice scratchy.
"Nothing. Everything is fine."
Selena appeared in the doorway, joining Demi. She looked as if she had just woken up, too.
"Demi, what's going on?" She groaned. "Why aren't you in bed?"
Alex's scowl deepened. Without a word, she took off her shoes and got into the bed with me. Demi gave me a hopeless look when she saw her daughter getting comfortable.
"I don't want to talk about it," Alex said into the pillow, her voice muffled. "Go away."
For some reason, this didn't seem to have the effect I thought it would. Instead of getting angrier, Demi simply shrugged and walked down the stairs. Selena shot a confused look at her daughter and I, then followed her wife, obviously ready to inquire after what was going on. I was equally confused. I didn't want to bring it up with Alex; it was obviously a sensitive subject. Unluckily, I was too curious now to stay quiet.
"Alex," I nudged her gently. "They're gone."
"Ugh, good," she moaned, turning over so she was looking at the ceiling. "Although, I doubt that's all I'm gonna hear from this."
"What happened?"
Flashback (Alex's POV)
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked my voice low dripping with venom. She smirked.
"What? Didn't you miss me? It's been seven years, and this is the welcome I get?"
"Only seven? Damn, I guess time really does fly when you're happier." I spat. Not the best come back I know, but I was still a bit overwhelmed to think of a better one. The smirk disappeared off the elderly woman's face and was quickly replaced with a scowl. "Why don't we just cut to the chase. You're not getting anywhere near Mitchie." I told her standing my ground. It was like we were the only ones there and the other two no longer existed.
"What makes you think I want anything to do with that little brat?" She asked and I was caught off guard, but I didn't show it.
"Then what are you doing here?" Her smirk came back and just the sight of it made my stomach want to empty it's contents.
"I'm here for you sweetie" She said in a sickeningly sweet voice that I was sure would haunt me in my nightmares for the rest of my life. "See, you're just the person I'm looking for."
"For what?" I said not really looking to do her any favors.
"Well, I've started my own little.. business I guess you could say, and I need a delivery girl. One that wouldn't be expected and can entertain my clients." She told me and I could already guess what this little "business" was.
"What makes you think I'd ever do anything for you?" I snarled and she laughed.
"My, you've grown oblivious my dear child." She said and it took everything in me not to tackle her and claw her eyes out. "See, Henry here" She gestured toward the pap guy. So that's his name. "Was my little spy. Through him, I got all the info I needed about my daughter". She spat the word like it was the greatest insult known to man kind. "So if you don't.. well then let's just say little Mitchie is going to have some hard times." Next thing I know the three of them are gone and I find myself back at my doorstep feeling disoriented while it's dark outside. It was light when the conversation happened, so I knew they had to have drugged me or something. Why? I have absolutely no clue.
I stepped into the house to find the lights off except for a lamp in the corner of the room where Momma stood with her arms crossed and a stern look on her face. I contemplated telling her what just happened, but then I figured if I told it would only put Mitchie in danger. I honestly could not deal with this right now.
"Where were you?" She asked me calmly.
"Out." I responded closing the door and taking my jacket off.
"Where?" She asked and I rolled my eyes walking toward the stairs. "Hey, don't you just walk away when I'm talking to you!" She scolded but I just continued up, ignoring her.
Mitchie's POV
The dark room fell into silence. The light wasn't coming from the hallway anymore, so I couldn't see her face. Finally, she said, "it's nothing you need to worry about, Mitch. Just go back to sleep."
I was pretty tired. Sighing in defeat, I moved so I was on my side, facing away from her. Without another word, I was asleep.
When I woke up, she was still asleep. Of course, typical Alex. Shouldn't I be the one tired all the time?
The look on her face was so cute, but I knew I couldn't stare at her all morning. Well, I guess I could, but that would ruin my opportunity to find out what was going on without bothering Alex. Swiftly, I squirmed out of the bed and tiptoed down the stairs where I knew Demi and Selena would most likely be. Sure enough, they were there, sipping coffee and talking in low voices. When Selena spotted me, she stopped abruptly.
Selena POV
Mitchie came downstairs, her hair a mess and her clothes rumpled. She has obviously just gotten out of bed. Her eyes were bright, though; it wasn't as if she was half-asleep still. Demi noticed my silence and looked over my shoulder. She spotted the teenager immediately.
"Good morning," I said hesitantly. I didn't know what I was supposed to say. Demi and I were discussing what we were going to do about Alex. We couldn't exactly continue that conversation in front of Mitchie. Although, we would have to tell her eventually. Maybe this was the best time after all.
"So…" the brunette looked at Demi. "What happened with Alex last night?"
My wife and I exchanged a look. I sighed in defeat and gestured for her to sit down. "Look Mitchie, last night Alex was out late, and we don't know why. Lately she's been worrying us, and we're wondering." I swallowed. "We're wondering if it's safe to keep her with us anymore."
"What! No!" Mitchie stood up in defense. "You can't send Alex away!'
"She could be with her uncle Justin, go to a safer location," I explained.
"I honestly don't know, Selena," Demi cuts in. She's pretty hesitant about this whole thing, and I'm not a huge fan of this idea either, but if it's what's best for Alex…
"You guys are her parents! You're supposed to keep her close to you!" Mitchie is close to yelling now.
"I know, Mitch, but given the circumstances…"
"What's going on down here?" Alex came down the stairs, rubbing her eyes and looking grumpy. "I was trying to sleep."
Mitchie shot Demi and I a look before leaving the room in a huff. Alex peered curiously after her through squinted eyes. "Mitch! Hey, come back!"
Demi rolled her eyes. "Alex, leave her alone for a little bit. You of all teenagers should know the importance of having personal space."
"Okay, what's going on with her?" My daughter crossed her arms and glared. "Did you do something?"
"No, but you did. Alex, honey, we're worried," I walked over and put a hand on her shoulder. "Where were you last night? Demi told me you came home at 3 am."
"It doesn't matter," she looks down, but I see a flicker in her eyes.
"Alex, you can tell me," I try to coax anything out of her. She's seriously starting to worry me.
Demi stands up, too, and gestures for me to give her some time alone with Alex. I shrug, anything that works. I head to the same room Mitchie was heading for earlier.
Demi's POV
She's hiding something. It's so obvious that it almost causes me physical pain.
"Alex, what happened last night?" I asked her pleadingly.
"It doesn't matter." was her reply.
"How does it not matter? We got a call from the school saying you were suspended, Mitchie had no idea where you were and then you don't show up until the early hours of the morning! Now tell me again how it doesn't matter."
"It just doesn't okay!? Just leave me alone." She turned and started to walk away.
"Alex, if you keep this up, we're going to have to send you to your Uncle Justin's." I warned her and she stopped mid step. She turned around and glared at me, but I could see something else swimming in those brown eyes that were so much like my own. I just couldn't tell what it was.
"You can't do that! Just because I keep something to myself once doesn't mean you can just ship me off like some sort of problem child!"
"Alex-"
"No! I'm not going! In fact, I'd like to see you try t get rid of me!" And with that she stormed off. I squeezed my eyes shut and pinched the bridge of my nose. I just hoped Selena was having a better time with Mitchie.
