Kuronue knelt down next to where she sat, curled up in the pile of furs. "Your foes are dangerous?"
"Immensely."
"Do you think you will fail?"
Her sigh was tremulous at best. "I hope not…but it's my duty to try no matter what."
Kuronue frowned. "I cannot say what comes after this because it is Youko's bet not mine…but I know I have grown fond of you, young priestess. I shall be sad if you do not succeed."
His words made her happy, yet the truths behind them filled her with sorrow. Reality was crashing back through, and Kagome knew that the moment she returned they would have to start fighting again. "Yeah," her voice wobbled "me too."

AN: Thank you everyone for the lovely reviews - I know it isn't constructive to demand reviews for chapters, plus I post this story because I enjoy writing it, but it's really nice to hear comments on chapters, even when I bulk-update.
On that note, of course, some replies - I haven't thought of modern-day Youko meeting Kagome via. Kurama, but that doesn't mean it won't happen...I have to admit, I don't have all of the intricacies of the plot planned out. And as to how Kagome resists two very attractive males, well, I certainly don't know! I'd be swooning.
A few people, over the course of the story, have sussed out where my main inspiration comes from, particularly the idea of writing a story in drabbles. It isn't the only influence (I read a lot more fanfiction than a full time student ought to, in my year) but it's a really big one (good on the person who caught the "privacy" joke from last chapter). If you like this style and haven't (by some miracle) checked them out, I encourage you to go to forthright on fanfiction here and immerse yourself in some absolutely phenomenal writing - especially if Kagome is your main gal. Honestly, they are a much better writer than I am, and I'm absolutely obsessed with their stories (especially the one about a young Sesshomaru. He is so cute!)
Youko's intentions have not changed...much. Kagome's always been alluring to men of the youkai-persuasion. But his motives are his own to know...and for us to discover.

If you've made it this far in the author's note, quick question: I've been toying with the idea of Chapter 100 being an actual story-length update...so, more than 1000 words. Would you rather it be like that, or broken up into small bits like I've been doing so far? The same events will happen, and I'll be doing bulk-updates for it, so it's a matter of style rather than what you'd be getting. Just curious!
