Chapter 5
"So," Jace said looking out at the empty marble quarry. "This is where Armel was spotted?" Alec nodded. "Yep." They looked out at the dusty, abandoned quarry in silence for a few seconds before Jace spoke up. "Well, where is he?" he asked, looking at Alec for answers. He shrugged. "He was spotted by the tree's over there at about midnight." he said pointing at the tree line just across the quarry where a search team was looking for evidence. Suddenly Magnus came running up behind them. "You may want to see this."
They arrived where the team was searching to see a shovel planted in the ground, with a note taped to it. Jace sighed. "You've got to be kidding me." he muttered, walking to the note and taking it off. It was a map of the quarry, with a red circle around a small portion it. He didn't think much of it and flipped the page to see a picture of Jonathan, also circled in red as well, with a time label underneath. 21:30:08. Underneath that was a very messily written sentence: I'll make this nice and simple, get me thirty thousand dollars and Clarissa, or he runs out of air. C'est ton choix. -A.C. Jace groaned. "You've got to be kidding me!" He looked up at Alec, who was giving him a confused look. "Get me to the institute."
...
Isabelle was working on the murder weapon on the Sizzy-tron, by herself, while everyone else slept. Clary and Maia had been up all night and had since then fallen asleep and leaning on each other for support. Simon had been up for about as long as they had, even though he fell back asleep about five times, he was woken quite violently by either Maia, Clary or Isabelle. Thanks to Hodge Isabelle had five cups of coffee and was ready to go. Even being awake, she was not expecting Jace, Alec and Magnus to come bursting in. Jace found the doors open, causing a loud bang to blare around the room as the doors hit the walls on either side. Clary and Maia jolted awake, Clary falling to the floor and landing on her hands and knees. Simon, however, landed flat on his face. Luckily without his glasses on.
"Jace! God you scared me!" Izzy said, setting the tablet down on her desk and a hand on her heart in shock. Simon groaned and sat up from the floor. "It wasn't just you." Clary stood and walked over to Jace, looking concerned and confused. "What is it? What was so important you had to give us all heart attacks in our sleep?" She said sarcastically with a small smirk. Her smirk fell when she saw Jace's face. He looked dead serious, almost afraid. "What?" she asked. He handed her the note and looked at the floor while she read, not wanting to see her reaction. "Oh my god… he got Jonathan." she said louder than she had planned, putting a hand to her mouth in shock. Clary's face fell instantly to a look of guilt. "He must've got him after I… after I… I yelled at him. He went outside, alone. Oh god... If I'd just been a better sister…!" she said on the verge of tears, Jace pulled her into a hug quickly and shushed her to help her calm down.
Jace pulled her away and looked her in the eyes. "The only one who the fault belongs to is Armel's. Okay?" he asked. She shook her head slowly, knowing that wasn't the entire truth. "W-when I was talking, earlier, with Jon in my office he-he told me why Armel is after us." she said slowly, her voice wavering. Everyone looked at her. She walked over to the couch and sat down, Jace following close behind. She told them everything. The letter, the fake identities, Armel's daughter. Everything. There was a long period of silence. Suddenly, Hodge came in.
"How's the case coming? Find anything yet?" he asked, cheerfully. "Would anyone like frozen lemonade?" he asked holding out a tray of small cups with straws. his smile dropped. Everyone seemed so, depressed. "What happened?" he asked, walking over to Isabelle's desk, putting the tray down. Isabelle spoke up. "Jonathan was taken by Armel." Hodge didn't seem fazed. "I heard about that. I'm sorry for your loss Mrs. Fray." Clary looked at him, confused. "Who told you?" she asked. Hodge seemed to pale. "I-I heard you talking about if before I came in." he stuttered. He was acting very, suspicious. "Oh," he said and reached onto the tray, pulling off a yellow flower. "This came for you."
Clary took it and started, running it over in her mind. "Yellow Rainflower, yellow, yellow Rainflower…" she kept mumbling. Hodge started walking towards the door and Clary stood. "Hodge," she called. He turned to face her. She was still holding the flower as she approached. When she looked up at him, her face was filled with anger. Suddenly she flung her fist across his face, hitting him hard in the jaw. "Clary!" Isabelle called as her and Jace rushed over to pull her off of Hodge. She had her hands on the collar of his shirt and was shaking him while yelling in his face. "WHERE IS HE?! WHERE IS HE?!" Once she was off of him Jace pulled her into an embrace and shushed her. Isabelle helped Hodge up, but didn't let go of his wrist. Clary pulled away and looked at the flower, still in her hand. "What is it?" Jace asked. Clary took a breath. "A yellow Rainflower." Silence.
"It means betrayal."
Bet you didn't see that coming! Sorry about the wait! I had a short story to write for english and a french science project on Fluorine and… ya. School has not been kind. I will update when I can! Stay fabulous! (You can only ever be fabulous if you love cupcakes.) BTW: 'C'est ton choix' is 'It's your choice' in French.
