ALL ROADS LEAD TO KARN
Donna was so happy to have Lee back that she almost convinced herself not to tell him the truth about himself. Almost. She couldn't do it though. He had a right to know.
"Lee, do you have a fob watch by any chance?" Donna asked.
"A fob w-watch? Yes, I remember a watch. I-I use to have one a long time ago. I sold it though. Why would you ask me about that?" Lee asked in surprise.
"You sold it? How could you sell it?!" Donna exploded.
Lee looked hurt by her reaction as he said, "W-what does it matter anyway? It was just a watch. I can always get another one."
"That watch wasn't just another watch. It was very important. Think back, Lee. Where did you sell it? Do you remember the name of the place and where it was?" Donna asked desperately.
"I-I don't remember. All I've been thinking about for the last couple of years is finding you. That's all that's mattered to me since I last saw you in the Library. I tried to call out to you, but I c-couldn't talk. I couldn't speak!" Lee said in despair.
Donna wrapped her arms around him and said in a gentle voice, "It's okay now. You've found me. I'm so glad that you did. I just wish that you had your watch with you. Even if you don't though, it doesn't matter."
"What's s-so important about that watch?" Lee asked as he put his arms around her as well.
"You're a Time Lord, Lee. Or at least you were. That watch had your Time Lord essence trapped inside of it. I love you whether you're a human or a Time Lord, but I just thought that you had a right to know just who you really were. Also I wanted us to get to spend eternity together. You see I'm a Time Lord now too. Can you believe it? Me, a Time Lord? It's completely true though. It doesn't matter anyway. At least we can be together the rest of your life anyway," Donna said as she kissed him.
Lee looked at her like she'd lost her mind as he said, "I'm a-a Time Lord?"
"You were one, and then you made yourself human. I know it's hard to believe, but it's the truth. You've got to remember where you sold that watch," Donna said.
"I-it could be anywhere. I went to so many places to find you. I traveled from one end of the galaxy to another. I had to work so many odd jobs in order to earn the money to keep going. I'd just keep moving from planet to planet always hoping that one day I'd see you again. I had to find you. We belong together," Lee said with a smile on his face as he looked at her.
Donna was deeply touched by this. He had never given up on finding her no matter what. Now she suddenly felt terrible for asking him about the watch. It was almost as if she were rejecting him in favor of someone else. That was the last thing that she wanted to do. She would never reject him. She certainly wouldn't now after hearing that story.
"It doesn't matter, Lee. I love you just the way that you are. I just wanted you to know about the watch. I still can't believe that you did all of that for me though," Donna said.
"W-why wouldn't I? You're p-perfect!" Lee said meaning it.
Donna smiled as she said, "You really need to talk to my mother. She seems to think otherwise."
"I-I'll tell her that she's wrong then. You're the smartest, sweetest, most beautiful woman that I've ever met," Lee said with a look of complete peace in his eyes.
Donna didn't know what to say to that. She didn't really believe that about herself especially lately, but it just made her love him even more that he did. She noticed that he had this look of pure bliss on his face now as they continued to hold each other.
She could tell that he could care less about the watch and had seemed to already have forgotten about it. All that mattered to him was her as he continued to hold her tightly. Donna however couldn't help but wonder what had happened to the watch and who might have it. Then she just let the whole matter slip from her mind too as she allowed herself to enjoy having this perfect moment together with him at last.
Amanda meanwhile was far from feeling peaceful and content. She had fooled Katherine into thinking that she was fast asleep, but she was far from it. She waited until she was sure that Katherine was no longer watching her, and then she suddenly sprang from her bed and made her way out of the room and down the corridor to Dorothy's room.
As soon as she reached Dorothy's room, the door opened, and Dorothy stood there wide awake with her eyes glowing. Amanda immediately realized that she knew why she was there.
"You want me to take you to Karn, right?" Dorothy said.
"Please. I have to get my life back the way that it was," Amanda begged her.
Dorothy smiled at her as she said, "Come on then."
"You'll take me?" Amanda asked filled with hope.
"Of course I will. My mum wants me to," Dorothy said.
"Well, I wish she had come and spoken up for me earlier if that's how she felt," Amanda said.
"She did. She couldn't convince Donna to let you do it so she told me to wait for you to come to me," Dorothy said.
"Well, what are waiting for? Let's go. Take me to Karn. I want to be me again," Amanda said.
"I have to warn you before we go that the Sisterhood of Karn might try to stop us from using the flame. They don't exactly take well to outsiders messing around with it. Maybe I could use the fact that I'm the Doctor and Rose's adopted daughter to get them to let you go into it. I'll try to anyway," Dorothy said.
"Thank you, Dorothy," Amanda said as she embraced her.
"You do realize that I'm going to get in a lot of trouble with Donna and your mum for this," Dorothy said.
"I have to do this. I can't keep living like this. I want to get this way naturally like I'm supposed to. I can't just lose such a large gap of my life like that and be expected to adjust to it," Amanda said.
"I agree so let's do this now while we still can before we get caught. Suddenly I feel like Ace again doing whatever I want despite what anyone else says. You know I should be the one thanking you, Amanda. I haven't felt this way in a long while. It's good to know that I can still be bad when I have to," Dorothy said with a large smile on her face.
"You were always bad, Dorothy. In a good way. I've always thought that you had to be just a little bad in order to be interesting," Amanda said with a wicked grin on her face.
"Well, look at you. I think that we're corrupting you. Just a little bit. Sorry about that," Dorothy said.
"It's okay, Dorothy. I hang out with vampires, werewolves, and witches. You've got to be just a little bit bad in order to do that. I consider it bad in a good cause though. Not the evil kind of bad just a little bit mischievous. Just like you," Amanda said.
"I think I have a fan. Who would have ever thought that," Dorothy said to herself with amusement.
Dorothy then took Amanda's hand in hers, and the two of them disappeared in a burst of golden energy. They arrived on Karn in seconds and appeared right next to the Sacred Flame itself. The Sisterhood needless to say were not pleased by this.
"Intruders! They're trying to tamper with the flame!" one of them shouted.
"No. Wait! I came to help my friend here. My name is Dorothy McShane and this is Amanda. She's been aged years ahead of her time, and she needs your flame to help her fix herself back to her proper age again. Can she go into it for a few minutes?" Dorothy asked.
"Dorothy? As in the Doctor and Rose's Dorothy?" Ohica, the High Priestess of the Sisterhood, said.
"That's me. Does that help me any?" Dorothy asked hopefully.
"I'm afraid it only keeps us from killing you. It doesn't necessarily mean that we'll let you use the flame. You will have to do much more convincing to get us to do that," Ohica said.
Amanda scowled. She couldn't have gotten this far only to be stopped when her goal was in sight and only a few feet away from her. She had to take a chance now while Dorothy had all of the Sisterhood's attention.
She started to silently make her way closer and closer to the flame even as Dorothy continued to talk to them. Finally when she was almost there, one of the Sisterhood spotted her and shouted, "Stop her!"
Amanda took a deep breath and plunged into the flame even as Dorothy screamed, "No! You need to do it with their supervision or you'll die!"
Amanda started to scream as the flame seemed to be burning her alive. Then she no longer felt anything, and the world went black.
Back on Gallifrey, Donna suddenly stiffened right in the middle of a kiss with Lee. Lee immediately realized that something was wrong as he asked, "What is it?"
"I don't know. I just had a really bad feeling. I feel like something terrible has happened," Donna said with a haunted look on her face.
"Donna, Amanda's gone and so is Dorothy!" Katherine shouted as she suddenly came running out of the TARDIS.
"Those dumbos! I'll kill them myself if the Sisterhood haven't already done the job! Come on, Lee. We're going to rescue some friends of mine. I hope," Donna said in an extremely worried voice.
"I-i-in a copier?" Lee asked in disbelief.
"I know, I know. I really have to think of a better shape for my TARDIS. I don't have the time though. I'm always running around saving people. I'm too busy to do anything else most of the time," Donna said as she led him by the hand into her TARDIS.
"Sounds exciting," Lee said with a grin.
"It is. You're going to love it," Donna said as she closed the doors behind them.
The TARDIS dematerialized just as a young woman came running up to it shouting, "No, wait! Stop!"
The woman sighed and then gave a small scream of anguish. She had almost found him and then she lost him. Again! She had been trying to get his watch back to him for years, but he was always just one step ahead of her. Always just out of her reach.
She had to find him and soon. She wasn't sure just how much longer that she could protect the watch. The watch just kept warning her that she had to deliver it to its rightful owner soon or she would be in great danger. The forces who wanted the watch would stop at nothing to get it, and they wouldn't even think twice about killing her for it.
"Is there anything that I can help you with?" Rose asked the woman.
She had seen her screaming at the TARDIS to stop from her bedroom window and had come outside as quickly as she could. She had a feeling that whatever she wanted that it was something very important.
The woman hesitated for a moment until the watch said, "You can trust her. She is a friend."
Rose heard this voice as well and recognized it. "Drax?" Rose asked in surprise.
"You can hear him? You know him? The voice in the watch?" the woman asked.
"Yes, I do. He's a friend of mine from long ago. What are you doing with his watch? Where is he?" Rose demanded.
"He was in that TARDIS that just left. Or at least part of him was. I keep trying to give this back to him, but I can't catch up to him. He's always just a little ahead of me. As for how I got it, he pawned it for the money that he needed to keep traveling with when he started looking for this Donna Noble that he's become so obsessed with. My name's Heather. Heather Mitchell. My father was the one who bought the watch from him. He and the rest of my family are dead now. I was the only one who survived the attack on the pawn shop that happened soon after Lee McAvoy left it there. The watch saved me that night, and it told me what it was even as it allowed me to use some of its power very briefly in order to knock my attackers unconscious. I've been running from the murderers of my family ever since in order to give this back to its rightful owner," Heather said in a sad voice.
"I'm so sorry, Heather. I know that Lee didn't mean for that happen. He didn't realize what he was doing when he gave that to your father. You don't have to worry anymore. You're safe now. I'll protect you until I can get you to him. I think I even know where he's going to. Take my hand, and I'll take us there," Rose said.
"How?" Heather asked in confusion.
She had been wondering how she was going to keep traveling even before this. She had used up the last of her money to get to Gallifrey. She had spent the rest of it in the years that she had been searching for Lee McAvoy as she fruitlessly followed him from one planet to another.
"I have my own way of traveling. It's faster, more efficient, and you can't beat the price," Rose smiled as she began to glow with the power of the Vortex.
Heather backed away in fear until Rose said in a gentle voice, "It's okay. I won't hurt you. I just want to help you complete your quest."
Heather smiled and nodded as she took Rose's hand. She felt that she could trust her even before the voice in the watch told her to. The two of them then left together in a burst of golden energy.
They left just as Sil, the slug-like Mentor who would buy and sell anything if it would make him a profit, and his group of hired assassins finally caught up to Heather. Sil cursed as he said into a small handheld communications device, "We've lost track of her again, and now she has the Bad Wolf protecting her! I think that we should just give up on this now. We'll never get the watch from underneath Rose Tyler's ever watchful gaze."
"You will find the watch for me, and you will bring it to me just as you promised to do. Otherwise, I will hunt you down and kill you. Trust me. You don't want me on your trail. Unlike you, I don't fail in what I set out to do," the voice on the other end of the communicator said.
"Why didn't you get the watch yourself then if you're so good?" Sil asked in an annoyed voice.
"I can't be seen to act in this. No one must know that I am behind this. Not yet," the voice answered.
"Fine. I'll get your watch, but the price just tripled if we have to go up against the Bad Wolf," Sil said.
"I'll pay whatever's necessary. It's worth whatever the cost may be in order to have it," the voice said.
Sil ended the communication and silently wondered just what was so important about a fob watch. It didn't really matter though as long as he got paid, and this payout would be enough to set him for life if he could pull it off. It was the kind of money that dreams were made of he thought to himself greedily.
Then he and his men finally got a lead as to where the woman they had been following had gone to from the tracer that they had planted on her that night that they had killed her family. She had never found it in all of that time, and Sil was thankful for that. It had been the only way of keeping up with her.
"She's on Karn. Let's go. We have some money to make. Quite a bit of it. Enough to make us all fabulously wealthy a hundred times over," Sil said greedily.
Next: Everyone and everything comes together on Karn. What's happened to Amanda? Will Lee ever get his watch back? Who hired Sil to get it for them and why? All of these questions will be answered next time. Also some people leave the Wolves even as others decide to join them. Who will they be?
