A/N: Thanks for reading. Enjoy!
"Your parents had a beautiful wedding.", Kate says while she and Elliot join Christian and me for brunch the morning after my parents tied the knot for a second time. She reaches for the creamer and adds a dash to her coffee. With Elliot's head turned, she eases her fingers towards his plate and swipes a piece of bacon.
"Help yourself.", he murmurs without turning his head. Kate darts her eyes to him.
"How in the heck did you know I took that bacon?"
"Elliot has excellent sense when it comes to food.", Christian laughs.
"I actually do.", Elliot shrugs. "Ana, your mom and dad said they're going to Italy in a few weeks.", Elliot says.
"In two weeks. Christian and I wanted to get them something memorable, and we thought a honeymoon to Italy would be the pefect thing."
"They're going to have the best time.", Kate sighs. "I remember going to Italy years ago with my family. It was fun, but I'm sure it would be even better if I went with my boyfriend." She cocks her head and waits to see if Elliot responds, but he continues eating until Kate clears her throat.
"Did you get choked on some food?", he asks, finally looking at her.
"I believe she was trying to get your attention.", Christian tells his brother as Oliver starts crying in his swing. Christian stands and takes the baby out of the swing. He sways gently back and forth, and before long, Oliver has calmed down.
"I'm sorry for not listening.", Elliot apologizes to Kate.
"It's fine. I was only saying how I'd like for us to go to Italy some day.", Kate says.
"We can do that."
"You know all the wedding talk gets me to thinking how the two of you could be the next pair getting married.", I tell Elliot and Kate. "But it's just a thought."
"While your thought is nice, Kate and I don't have to have a ring to proclaim our love for each other.", Elliot says as he polishes off the rest of his food. "We're perfectly happy where we are now." Kate's now the one who's silent. "Babe, don't you agree?"
"I agree we're good where we are now.", Kate answers. "But you do want to get married one day, right?"
"Maybe. I'm not sure." With an extreme awkwardness filling the room, Christian and I trade glances. "We can be happy and not be married."
"Why don't we talk about something else?", I ask. "We're supposed to be getting several inches of rain over the next few days."
"I heard that as well.", Christian says, aiding my attempt at preventing things from becoming worse. "It's also going be cooler."
"Did you suddenly get the epiphany that you're against marriage or is it something you've been thinking about for a while?", Kate questions Elliot.
"It's a thought that I've had, but it's gotten a little stronger." Kate mumbles under hear breath and pushes back her chair, getting up and heading to the doorway. "Where are you going?"
"Away from you. Ana, do you want to go with me?"
"Kate, please. Just let me explain.", Elliot pleads, yet Kate heads out of the kitchen and to the front door. Christian motions for me to follow her. I rush past Elliot and to Kate's car where she's fumbling for her keys. Sawyer hurries to one of the security SUVs and pulls up behind us.
"Maybe you should stay here and talk.", I tell Kate once we're in her car.
"I'm not saying I won't talk to him eventually. For now, I need some space. He's obviously been reevaluating things, and maybe it's my turn to do the same." She checks the mirror and laughs. "At least Christian won't be upset with you for not having Sawyer."
"He might be upset once he realizes I left my phone at the house."
"He might not since you have Sawyer who can keep Christian posted."
Kate drives through the city and towards the home she shares with Elliot. The forecasted rain starts spattering against the windshield just as she parks. Her head falls back against the headrest as tears matching the raindrops fall down her face. Seeing her open her door and get out, I do the same and rush behind her inside the house while Sawyer remains stationed in the SUV. Kate shakes the rain off and grabs two towels for us to dry ourselves.
"I shouldn't have made that joke about the two of you getting married.", I say. "If I hadn't, none of this would've happened."
"I'm glad you did. It gave him the push he needed to tell me how he felt. He's had his chance to think, and now it's my turn to do the same."
"Elliot loves you. I see the way he smiles when you walk into a room."
"I don't doubt he loves me, but Ana, sometimes love isn't enough. Telling me he's not sure if he wants marriage is a big thing which I can't ignore. I'm not saying I expected Elliot and I to get married tomorrow or next week, but I thought it would happen one day."
"You never know. It might. He only said he's not sure." She heads to the kitchen and grabs a bottle of wine from the fridge. "Isn't it a little early to be drinking?"
"Can we not do the whole lecture thing? Please just let me wallow for a while." She pulls out two glasses, but I shake my head.
"Would it be ok if I use your phone to call Christian. I'm sure Sawyer's already spoken with him, but I want to check in on Oliver." Kate places her phone in my hand and pours some of the wine into her glass. I step back into the living room but look back at Kate every few seconds.
"Hey.", Christian says when he answers. "I just got off the phone with Sawyer who told me you're at Elliot and Kate's. I tried calling you, but your phone is here."
"I left in such a rush. I wish she hadn't left, but I wasn't about to let her leave alone when she was so upset."
"I understand. What's she doing now?"
"Drinking wine.", I sigh. "I can't believe how one minute we were having a nice brunch and the next we were watching a relationship on the brink of collapsing. "Why can't there be a rewind button? How's Oliver?"
"He's good. Elliot's holding him. I realize things are crazy at the moment, but we need to trust it all will work out in the end." I tap my foot against the carpet and blow out a long breath. "Ana?"
"I heard you. I'll call you later. I love you."
"Love you too.", he says before we hang up at the same time.
I pad back into the kitchen and find Kate's pushed her glass away from her. She's now eating a piece of chocolate cake and has chocolate icing all over her face. Ordinarily, I'd laugh, but this isn't a normal moment. I hand her a paper towel instead.
"You were right about it being too early for wine. It's not too early for chocolate though. Want some?"
"Ok." I slice a piece of the cake and place it on a small plate. I take a small bite and give her a thumbs up in approval. "This is reall delicious."
"I made it last night. Do you remember how we used to sit at the table with either cake or pie and talk about our problems?"
"I do. As I recall, we were able to solve a lot of issues.", I smile.
"I'm afraid this issue might be one that can't be fixed.", she mutters. "Even though I can't avoid Elliot forever, I'd like to at least try and not think about it for a while."
"I'm here to support you in any way I can."
"Perfect." She claps her hands and stands. "Follow me." I trail behind her to the living room and watch her look through the collection of dvds in the entertainment center. "Rainy days are pefect girl time days. Is there any certain dvd you want to watch?"
"You pick.", I tell her. She browses the dvds until stopping at one whose title I can't see. When she turns around, she holds the dvd above her head and grins. She's holding Sixteen Candles, a movie both of us love. "Great choice."
"Let's get to watching some Jake Ryan!"
"Ana." Sometime during the middle of the movie I fell asleep, and I'm not being woken up by what sounds like Christian. I open one eye and see Christian standing over the love seat where I'm laying down. "Hey."
"Hi. Where's Oliver?"
"He's with Gail. I drove Elliot here so they could finally talk." I look over at the sofa and see that Elliot's admiring Kate as she sleeps. He starts to place his hand on her shoulder but pulls away. This goes on a few times before he eventually touches her shoulder. Kate's eyes open and widen at seeing Elliot before her.
"What are you doing here?", she asks. Her voice is calmer than the last time she talked to him.
"I live here.", he replies.
"I'm aware of that, but what part of me needing time away from you don't you understand."
"I gave you some time even though I shouldn't have let you leave in the first place. I should have done every thing I could to keep you at Christian and Ana's." Elliot paces the floor, keeping his eyes on Kate the entire time. "Scratch that. I shouldn't have let the lie go on as long as I did." After Christian helps me to my feet, we start making our way to the door. "Christian, Ana, stay. I want the two of you to hear what I have to say."
"Elliot, as I told Kate earlier this is my fault. I'm the one who made the stupid joke about the two of you being the next ones getting married.", I sigh.
"If anyone here is sorry it's me.", Elliot says. "I'm the one who took things too far." He stops pacing and bends down to eye level with Kate. "Kate, I love you."
"I love you too, but..." Elliot places his index finger on her lips to silence her.
"Let me finish. I love you more than I've ever loved anyone in my life. I don't even want to think about what my life would be without you in it. I was foolish for making that damn comment about not being sure if I want to get married. I do want to get married, and I want to get married to you."
"You have a weird way of showing it.", Kate scoffs.
"I only said that to throw you off." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small black box. "I've been carrying this around a few weeks, trying to figure out how to ask you." He slowly opens the box to reveal an oval shaped diamond ring. I can't help but gasp at what I'm seeing.
"I don't want you to propose just to make me happy. Don't do it to please me."
"I'm not. I'm doing this because I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you as your husband."
"I'm so ashamed of how I ran away from you.", Kate whispers. "How could you want to marry me after I acted crazy?"
"We're all a little crazy sometimes. Granted today has been wild, but we can turn it around."
"How?"
"Kate, will you spend the rest of your life with me?" Kate brings her eyes over to where I'm standing with Christian. I nod and smile.
"Yes. I'll marry you.", she answers.
"Today was definitely a day we'll never forget.", Christian says. I step out of the bathroom and see that he's sitting on the bed, wearing only his pajama pants. "How about you come closer?"
"In a second." I stay a few feet away from him while keeping my hands behind my back. "What are you hiding behind your back?"
"A surprise."
"I love surprises. Is it sexy lingerie?" He gets off the bed and stalks towards me. "Maybe it's something I can peel off your body."
"It's nothing like that.", I tell him as I take a step back.
"How about you just tell me what it is?" When he goes to reach for what I'm hiding, I'm not able to stop him in time. "Is this what I think it is?"
"A pregnancy test."
"A pregnancy test with two lines.", he corrects me.
"Otherwise known as a positive test. The timing is terrible. Oliver is only seven months old. We haven't discussed more kids. I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I don't want you to be sorry for this amazing gift. As far as I'm concerned the timing doesn't mean anything. What matters is we're having another baby."
"You're happy?", I ask.
"I'm so damn happy."
