A/N: Thanks for reading. Enjoy!
"Are you sure you had a nice time?" I stop in the middle of the walkway and turn around to face Christian. "Well?"
"Christian, for the hundredth time, I had an amazing time in San Diego.", I say as Oliver yawns in his carrier which Christian is carrying.
"I'm sorry for asking you repeatedly, but my goal was for you and Oliver to have the best time."
"Mission accomplished." My response is genuine. Our San Diego trip was filled with fun and memories that will stay with us forever, but alas, we're now back in Seattle and back to reality.
We're almost at the front door when it's opened by Gail. She stands in the doorway with a bright smile. Setting the luggage he's carrying down, Taylor walks up the porch two steps at a time until reaching Gail.
"Hi.", Gail says shyly.
"Hi.", Taylor replies, sounding even more bashful than Gail. Sawyer steps up beside them and laughs. "I really hope you aren't laughing at the way Gail and I greeted each other. What was it I overheard Olivia calling you?" Taylor taps his finger against his chin until a lightbulb goes off. "Ah, yes. Lukie Wookie."
"All right, all right.", Sawyer mutters. "I shouldn't have laughed."
Once we've stepped inside the house, we remove our coats and start getting settled in the living room. Christian takes Oliver out of his carrier and places him in my arms.
"Jason said San Diego was great.", Gail says.
"It was perfect.", I tell her. "You should come with us next time. She glances at Sawyer who's typing a text on his phone.
"I suppose you're letting Olivia know you're back."
"Yep. I texted her when we landed and also told her I'd also text her when we got here. She's still at work but said she can't wait to see me later. I had a brief spell of not feeling well during our trip, and I made the mistake of telling Olivia about it."
"How was it a mistake?", Christian asks.
"Because it made her worry about me which is the last I wanted. Her worrying about me made me worry about her getting stressed out, and that's not good for the baby."
"Olivia loves you very much and is going to worry about you.", I say. "We've got everything covered here so why don't you go home?"
"I appreciate your offer, but I'm going to keep working until it's time for Olivia to get off work."
"Well, Mrs. Grey, I believe a little boy is in need of a nap.", Christian says, rising to his feet and easing Oliver from my arms. Oliver's eyes are becoming tired as he yawns. "See."
"You're right.", I nod. "Let's put him down for a nap."
"We'll do just that, but afterwards, you're going to take a nap as well."
"I'm not even going to act like a nap doesn't sound good because it sounds like heaven."
"Ana, thank you for my bracelet." Kate holds up her wrist where the dolphin charm bracelet I got her is dangling. While Christian is back at work today, Oliver and I are visiting Kate at the magazine. "Even so, I meant it when I said you didn't have to get me a gift."
"And I meant it when I said we were going to bring you something back. Since I've already told you all about San Diego, how about you tell me what's been going on in Seattle."
"Oh nothing exciting.", she murmurs as she rolls her chair closer to her desk. "I've been working and coming home and repeating the steps."
"Hmmm." Her eyes dart to me.
"What's with the hmmm?"
"You said you've been working and going home, yet I get the feeling there's more going on." I rest my chin on my hands and wait for confirmation. Kate ignores me at first, checking something on her computer and then reading an article in last week's magazine. I catch her stealing glances at me every few seconds.
"Fine.", she sighs as she waves her hands in defeat before looking at Oliver who's watching from his stroller. "Your mom is a mind reader."
"Maybe.", I say. "Out with it."
"More is going on. I was abducted by aliens who studied me for hours and hours until finally realizing the only thing wrong me is the fact that my best friend won't take my word when I say nothing is wrong."
"Have I ever told you should be a comedian? Kate, I may come across as pestering you, but I'm only being this way out of concern. We've always been there for each other."
"You're right. The reason why I'm avoiding telling you what's bothering me is because I'm not sure if it's something worth being bothered over. However, I'm going to tell you. Elliot's been acting a little weird these past few days. I walked into the kitchen last night and saw he was on the phone, but he immediately hung up on whoever he was talking to. It struck me as odd so I asked if something was wrong. He said no."
"You didn't buy it?", I ask.
"No. The way his voice cracked when he said everything was fine gave me doubts. I don't know what's going on, but there is definitely something going on.", she says. "I don't want to be a paranoid woman, yet I can't help it."
"Kate, I haven't spoken to Elliot, but I'm sure there's an explanation for things. You've just got to trust him."
"I'm trying. Let's change the subject to something. How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling great. My nausea started off about the same as it was with Oliver, but now it's not so bad. I've been making sure to get all the rest I can."
"I bet Christian's had a hand in that as well.", she says, raising a brow.
"He's certainly been making sure I don't overdo it. It's sweet though."
"I saw your dad today. Well, I saw a glimpse of him.", Christian says as we're finishing up dinner. "I was getting coffee at Starbucks when I saw him walk past the window. I called and told him how I had seen him, and then I asked if he wanted to join me for some coffee. He said he would, but he was on his way to get some new faucet for the kitchen sink."
"Mom mentioned the old faucet had been giving them trouble." I wipe the corner of my mouth and reach for another helping of carrots.
"I meant to ask what Kate said about her bracelet."
"She loved it.", I say. "She was a little down though." Christian glances at me over his glass. "She thinks Elliot's keeping something from her. I told her to not worry and to trust him." Christian clears his throat and drops his eyes. "I was right in telling her that, wasn't I?" When he doesn't answer, I begin to suspect Christian might be privy to what's going on with Elliot. "Have you spoken with Elliot?"
"Uh...yeah.", he stammers. "Kate wasn't wrong about Elliot. He has been keeping a secret, a good secret. Elliot said several months ago he and Kate were out on a Sunday afternoon drive when they found this old two story Victorian style house. It had a wrap around porch and large spacious yard. Kate's eyes sparkled the entire time she was looking at it. The house wasn't for sale though. Fast forward to last week when Elliot was doing a job not far from there and saw the a for sale sign in the front yard. He ended up talking with the owners who are selling and moving to Florida. They already had someone else interested in the house but told Elliot they'd keep in touch. The other night he got a call that the first person backed out. Elliot put his offer in, and it was officially accepted just yesterday. He wasn't planning on telling Kate until he knew for sure."
"He didn't want to get her hopes up.", I reply. "She's going to be elated."
"He's going to tell her tonight by taking her to dinner and then a drive to their new house."
"They're getting married and getting a new house, two huge yet wonderful steps."
