A/N: Thanks for reading. Enjoy!
"Ana, I've got news, not bad news but incredible news." I hear Kate's voice echoing downstairs as I walk out of the master bathroom. I go through the bedroom and out into the hallway. "Where are you?" I stop at the top of the stairs and see Kate standing at the foot of the stairs. "There you are."
"Here I am.", I shrug before heading down the stairs.
"Hi. I'm sorry for just barging in, but I couldn't tell you my news over the phone." She takes my hand as I get to the last stair. "Easy."
"Thanks." We walk into the living room where she stops and covers her mouth with her hand. "Are you ok?"
"I was so wrapped up in telling you that I didn't even consider Oliver might be napping. Oh gosh. I'm sorry if I woke him."
"Kate, Oliver's not here. He's with Grace. Tell me what has you all excited." I'm fairly sure I already know the answer.
"It seems I was right about Elliot keeping something from me, but it wasn't bad. He bought us a house.", she says gleefully.
"A house? Wow. Kate, that's great.", I say, trying to sound like this is the first time I've heard the news. "You have to tell me all about it." She cocks her head to the side. "What?"
"You already knew, didn't you? It's ok if you did."
"How do know I already knew?"
"I got this vibe from you.", she shrugs as we sit down.
"You're right. I already knew although I didn't find out until last night. I wanted to help alleviate your concern so I asked Christian if he had any idea about what could be going on with Elliot, and he told me about the house. I'm sorry if I ruined your reveal."
"It's ok. You were looking out for me. The house is exactly what I've always pictured myself living in. It's an older house but has so much charm about it. The wraparound porch has a swing that Elliot and I can cuddle in on warmer nights. The yard will be perfect for when we have kids. I can see little Elliots and little Kates running around." Her eyes are misty as she's talking. "It's a house for making memories."
"It sounds perfect, and I can't wait to see it." My stomach suddenly starts churning. "Excuse me for a second. I'm going to get some ginger ale." I start to stand but the nausea is too powerful.
"Stay there. I'll get the ginger ale." Kate gets up and heads to the kitchne while I lean back, not even feeling up to arguing. I look up when I hear her returning to the room. "Here you go."
"Thanks.", I say before taking the glass. "I had been feeling great until this morning when I woke up. Today is one of those days I'm either throwing up or feeling like throwing up."
"I can't wait to experience those days.", Kate giggles.
"Speaking from experience, there's no greater thing than being a parent."
"Did you have fun with Grandma today?", Christian asks Oliver who's crawling on the floor of Grace and Carrick's living room.
"He certainly did.", Grace answers. "It was the perfect way to spend my day especially with all the time I've putting in at the hospital lately."
"I've been telling her she needs to slow down.", Carrick murmurs. "Does she listen to me? No." Grace whips her head around to face him.
"You're one to be talking. I recall you working several late nights not long ago."
"I was prepping for trial, but I've been working less, the same thing I wish you would do."
"It's not that easy. I've got patients who have been with me for a long time, and I don't want them to feel abandoned.", Grace says as Christian and I watch the back and forth between Carrick and Grace.
"Isn't it wonderful that Elliot and Kate now have their dream house?", I ask to change the subject.
"It's great.", Christian replies as Oliver crawls over to him. "Elliot said they might even have the wedding in the backyard."
"Have they said anything about a date?", Carrick asks.
"They don't have one yet.", I tell him as the front door swings open, and Mia stomps into the house. She takes off her coat and throws it at the the coat rack but misses it by several feet.
"Great.", she mutters, picking up her coat from the floor. "I really hope you have some ice cream."
"I think we have some.", Grace says. "Sweetheart, what's wrong?"
"Maybe you should reword that and ask what's not wrong. I got up this morning and found that my coffee maker wasn't working. I brushed it off since I've got one in the food truck, but that one also wasn't working. I decided to skip my morning coffee and get the food truck going. The battery was dead. Nicholas volunteered to get one for me. After he got the battery, I thought things were looking up. I got the truck going and was doing ok until group of guys drove by and..." She falls back in one of the chairs and starts crying.
"What did they do?", Christian hisses. "Tell me, and I'll ruin them."
"They tossed a bunch of eggs at the truck and drove away laughing. I was in the middle of waiting on a customer so I tried my best not to let my tears fall. The second the customer was gone though I broke down. Nicholas stopped by on his way on break, and I told him what happened. He was just as upset as me."
"What kind of vehicle were they driving?", I ask.
"It was a red pickup truck and had three young guys in it. That's about all I could remember. I called the police, and they sent out an officer who did a report. He acted like he could care less."
"Who was the officer?", Grace asks Mia.
"Jacob Peretti. He said more than likely it was some guys who were merely looking to blow off some steam. Who blows off steam by tossing eggs at vehicles?", Mia scoffs.
"The nerve of that officer.", Carrick snarls. "Your food truck is more than a vehicle. It's your business. For those guys to do that is beyond ridiculous, and for that officer to brush it off is just as bad. I'm going to make some calls to the police department in the morning, and I'll make sure Officer Peretti learns a lesson."
"I'm going to help too.", Christian adds. "Mia, tell me exactly where you were when the incident happened, and I'll have my guys see if they can find anything on the street cameras."
"Dad, Christian, I didn't tell you about what happened so you could go after the officer and the guys.", Mia murmurs as she stands and takes Oliver from Christian. Oliver's tiny hand touches the side of Mia's face, and she starts smiling. "I told you because I was upset."
"And we hate seeing you upset which is why we're going to help you. It's possible those losers have either or are going to do the same to someone else. We could prevent that.", Carrick says. Mia turns to me and Grace for our input on the situation.
"You know both your dad and brother are stubborn and are going to do whatever they want to do.", Grace says.
"My darling wife, you're stubborn as well.", Carrick grins, winking at Grace.
"Are we back on the working too much subject?" A stare off begins between Carrick and Grace so I once again decide to steer things.
"Mia, you were wanting some ice cream, right?", I ask while arching a brow at Mia who catches on to what I'm doing.
"I was. Mom?"
"Let's go and see.", Grace nods. Mia places Oliver back in Christian's arms, and she and I start to follow Grace to to the kitchen. Grace stops in her tracks and looks over her shoulder at Carrick. "We'll pick up our conversation later."
"I feel bad for Mia and her bad day.", I say. I fluff my pillow and start getting comfortable in the bed.
"I feel bad for the fuckers who egged her truck. They're going to pay", Christian growls as he types on his laptop.
"Just don't get hurt." I lean back on my pillow and let out a deep sigh. Christian finally moves his eyes from the laptop screen and onto me.
"You've got something on your mind. What is it?" My eyes inch slightly to his laptop, a move he notices. "Ah. I get it. You're bothered that I'm working in bed and not in the way you'd like.", he laughs.
"The conversation between your mom and dad reminded me of us. I understand the importance of your job, but sometimes I wish you'd work a little less. Here you are working at bedtime instead of getting some sleep." He sets the laptop on the floor and rubs his eyes. "See. You're tired."
"I'm not going to disagree with the being tired part, but I've got to get these emails returned by tomorrow. I also have an entire company of people depending on me. I can't slack or I take the risk of letting them down."
"I didn't say anything about you slacking. I simply said I'd like for you to cut back a little. There's a difference there.", I snap. "I also don't want to sound like a selfish person, but you have a family who need you just as much as your employees."
"Ana, I've done the best I can to be there for our family. Do you not recall me coming back early from my trip to Connecticut? How about me making the San Diego trip a family one?", he says as I sit up in the bed.
"Are you throwing those in my face?" I feel my ire building.
"No. I'm not throwing them in your face. I'm only pointing out how I chose my family over work."
"Oh, I suppose you want a cookie for that." His eyes darken, and I wonder how he's going to respond. To my shock, he starts laughing. "What the hell?" I then surprise myself by starting to laugh. "Why are we laughing?"
"I have no fucking idea.", he chuckles. "I'm sorry for our conversation getting out of hand."
"I'm sorry too. I shouldn't be giving you a hard time about work."
"You did it because you love me." He brings his lips to my cheek and smiles.
"I do love you."
