CHAPTER 43
Lisanna slowly pushed the door of the infirmary. What caught her eyes was unpleasant. Her guild members were injured and tending each other. She smiled bitterly. She glanced at the blonde dragon slayer whose lying helplessly in bed.
Tartarus did give them a great blow. They attacked both Fairy Tail and Sabertooth at the same time. Even though they managed to win over the dark guild – some were arrested by the council's soldier but some managed to escape – the great mages of Crime Sociere came to give some helps – still, every member was badly injured.
Minerva almost killed her. She was intended to kill her. But Sting saved her. She would certainly die if Sting wouldn't act that fast. But it almost costed him his life.
Wendy did a great job in healing everyone, including her and Sting. But the dragon slayer was still unconscious. He lied there quietly. His breathing barely seen. She had to check her pulse almost every fifteen minutes. She was so afraid.
Lisanna turned the water off and took the basin and the cloth back to the infirmary. On her way back, she saw Laxus and Mirajane talked to each other. They might have been discussing about what had happened – the parts of the guild that were destroyed, the guild members that injured.
She pushed the infirmary door again and entered it. She put the basin carefully on the table next to the bed. She touched his forehead with the back of her hand. He was cold. His face was pale. His condition hadn't change. She sat quietly and took his cold hand in hers. Her mind slowly wandered into her incomplete memories.
We met for the first time when I was coming back from death. An encounter with the soul eater – they told – cost me my life. And I found you on my bed, staring at me. Honestly, I didn't know who the hell were you, but it felt like I knew you.
Then, we met again at the library. I still didn't know who the hell were you, but I enjoyed your company. Having you around made me felt safe. I still remember your worried face when the books fell on me.
Then, we sat by the ocean, watched pirates' ships. You seemed to like them. Those pirates, they're fun, didn't they? Maybe that's why you loved watching them. And the food was great too.
We were like magnets. No matter how hard we tried to ignore each other, we were drawn closer. Sometimes, I felt we were not meant for each other. One of us would injure when we were together. Although I took the blow most of the time. Maybe because I am weaker.
And you noticed it. You said that I always hurt whenever you're around. That made you left me. And that also the reason you came back. You said you wanted to take care of me. Till one of us died, or we could die together. I like it though. But I don't like seeing you like this.
She sighed. She kissed his hand.
Suddenly, she froze. Her eyes widened. Her mouth half-opened. As if she had remembered something horrible. Slowly, she turned to her still-unconscious boyfriend. She then carefully put his hand down and arose from her chair.
She went out of the infirmary, searched for someone. As she spotted that person, she walked up to him. Her legs felt so heavy and she had to push all her energy to force them to move.
Lisanna tugged on his fur coat. "Laxus-san…" she called, weakly.
The lightning mage turned to the girl. Also her sister.
"Lisanna, are you okay?" the concerned elder sister asked. "Is Sting okay?"
Lisanna barely lifted her head. Her eyes kept on the floor but her hand was still tugging on the man's coat. Mirajane moved to her side, held on her arm.
"I need your help," she spoke, half-whispered. Enough for the two to hear.
The two mages looked at each other. "Tell us what's going on," Mirajane persuaded but was a little bit forcing.
"Laxus-san…"
Laxus looked at the little Strauss before turned back to the older one. They moved to the second floor where the place was quiet.
"Okay, tell me what's going on," Laxus finally spoken.
Lisanna was still staring at the floor. Her hand was still tugging on the man's coat and Mirajane's on her free arm.
"I need your help," she said.
"Why?" he asked back.
"I need your help," she repeated.
Mirajane brushed her arm lightly, soothing her little sister's emotions. "We would certainly help you. But…would you care tell us what's it about?"
Lisanna suddenly started sobbing. She leaned her forehead on Laxus' arm. Mirajane quickly hugged her little sister's shoulders.
"I did something terrible," she muttered.
Laxus and Mirajane glanced at each other.
"No," she added. "…I did something selfish."
Laxus moved, faced the little Strauss. She clung to his coat.
"What have you done?" he asked.
Her sobs died down. She lifted her head a little, stared into nothing.
"I wished for him to die."
Both Laxus and Mirajane deadpanned.
Lisanna walked carelessly through the wood. Searching for that place again.
"Hello!" she shouted as she arrived at a recognizable place.
An almost round, empty space surrounded by bushes and tall trees. Light rays sneaked through the tall trees' leaves.
"Hello!" she shouted again. "Please, answer me!"
No desirable answer came to her. Only the chirps of some passing birds.
"I need your help! Please!" she pleaded.
A figure showed itself. The woman in white dress appeared with a scowl on her face.
"You really took your time to realize everything." Her male voice sounded angry.
"I'm sorry. But…is there any way I can do to change this?" she apologised.
The woman chuckled. "You asked for miracles to happen thousand times."
The mage looked to the floor, avoiding the woman's eyes.
"Do you remember what you wished for?" she asked. Her voice softened into a woman's voice.
"Yes, I do," Lisanna replied, almost a whisper.
The woman quiet, waiting for her next answer. When their eyes met, she raised her brow, demanding the answer. Lisanna averted her eyes.
"I said that my life is completed with my siblings and Fairy Tail," Lisanna said.
The woman heard to chuckle again.
"You wished for nobody to enter your life anymore," the woman paraphrased. "I warned you, remember? You can't have what you wished against."
Lisanna nodded weakly. "I know. But, he is a good man."
"But, he's bad at choosing whom to love," the woman said.
Lisanna inhaled deeply.
"Is there anything you can do to save him? To stop all this?"
The woman shook her head.
"Things you wished for cannot be undone. You can't have what you cannot have. There's nothing I can do," she said. "But.." she added. "…there's something you can do." Lisanna looked directly into her eyes. "And you knew it all along."
Lisanna frowned. The woman was right. She knew what she had to do. Just that, she didn't want to admit it.
She turned back into her human form right before her feet touch the ground. Laxus had been watching her since she flew out of the thick forest till she finally and safely arrived in front of her.
"I'm back," she sang, tried to hide her sadness.
"How's it going?" he asked.
"Fine. I know what I should do," she said, grinning widely.
"Don't do anything stupid," he warned.
"I know," she chuckled.
"Ready to go?" he asked, stretched out his hand for her.
Lisanna grabbed his hand and quickly wrapped her arms around his neck. "Let's go," she whispered.
From those tight hug, he knew she wasn't alright. He glanced at her, before transformed into lightning bolt and shot through the sky to return home.
Mirajane entered the infirmary. She promised her little sister that she would look after the Sabertooth dragon slayer while she was away.
"Oh, you're awake?"
The dragon slayer was lying on the bed, while his eyes were staring to the ceiling, before he turned to the barmaid.
"Where's Lisanna?" he asked.
Mirajane smiled. She placed a glass of water on the table.
"She went out for a while. She's fine. You don't have to worry about her." The woman sat on the chair.
She could see him felt relieved when he heard that Lisanna was alright.
""Thank you for saving her life."
Sting was a bit surprised when the woman bowed before him. He tried to rise from the bed but the pain in his chest restricted him.
"You shouldn't move!" she said, but still, she helped him sat up.
"You would do the same," he said.
"Huh?" the woman confused.
"Lisanna. You would save her if you were there. Aren't you?" he explained.
Mirajane nodded and smiled bitterly. Sting leaned his head against the wall.
"I'm sorry I didn't do anything last time. I should've save her, so she won't hurt."
"It's okay. You've done your best." She tried to comfort him.
He turned to the older Strauss.
"I will not let her get hurt anymore. I promise."
Mirajane nodded.
"I'm sure you do." She stood up and took the glass of water from the table. "I'm glad that you're awake now. Please finish this. I'll call Wendy to check on you." She gave him the water.
He nodded while mouthed a 'thank you'. He watched the woman retreating back to the door.
As Mirajane pulled the door opened, she surprised to see her little sister had returned.
"Hi, Mira-nee!" she greeted her cheerfully.
Mirajane glanced at the patient inside before giving her little sister a way to enter the infirmary. She then closed the door behind her back, and looked at Laxus who had been staring at her since they arrived.
Lisanna walked quietly to the bed. Her eyes kept watching her dragon slayer sat on the bed with his eyes closed and his head against the wall. She sat on the edge of the bed, facing him. The weight changes on the bed opened his eyes. Had before him, the girlfriend was staring at him with a wide smileon her face. She touched his cheeks, while her other hand held his. He held her hand on his face.
"Aren't you going to hug me or kiss me or anything?" he asked.
She chuckled and shook her head. He noticed her teary eyes.
"No. I just want to stay here and stare at you like this," she said.
He snorted and rolled his eyes.
"I was expecting at least a kiss from you," he whined.
She laughed. Still, she didn't move from her spot and kept staring at him. She wanted to savour the moment.
At the same time, Laxus and Mirajane were talking to each other.
"How's it going?" she asked, placed a glass of beer in front of him.
"Not good," Laxus replied, short. He glanced the woman who had sat next to him. She finally had a moment to rest.
"Really bad?" she asked again.
Laxus inhaled deeply.
"Let say…we'll be seeing her fake smile for a little while," he explained.
Mirajane sighed. She rested her arms on the counter.
"Have you ever heard of that kind of flower?" he asked, received weak nods from the woman not long after that.
"I was careless. I should have taken a look at the mission she was going to take. I could give some explanation about the flower."
"Even if you tell her about that flower, we still didn't expect it to be like this. No one did," he half-assured her.
"Maybe I could prevent her from making such kind of wish," she sighed.
"Maybe fate was just playing with her."
She turned to the dragon slayer with a confused look.
"They had known each other before she found that flower. If the wish she made meant to break them apart, they shouldn't have kept coming back to each other and stayed this long," he told.
Mirajane bit her lower lip.
He continued, "That boy had chosen to stay away many times, but they still coming back together. It they're not meant for each other, why God let them finding each other? Isn't that fate is playing with them?"
She inhaled deeply. Taking in every word he said. He turned around and leaned his back against the counter.
"After all they had gone through, do you think he would let her ditch him just like that?" he asked, but not exactly demanded the answer.
"Is there anything we can do to help?" she asked, held back her tears.
"Nope. It's all up to her now."
Mirajane turned too, facing the guild hall.
"Laxus…" The man turned to his name, had her staring at him smilingly. Slowly she put her hand on his. "Thank you for being there for her much more than I did."
"You're trying too hard. And worrying too much."
He flipped his hand, gently took her hand and firmly held it.
"Everything will be fine. Believe me," he said.
"Mirajane nodded and smiled bitterly.
