Chapter 56: Ghost World

Sakura wavered in and out of consciousness. There was a female chanting a spell, but the voice was muffled, "Please let this work." She was in a cellar at the boarding house. Pentagrams were on the ground, ceiling and walls. The door was shut. There was someone behind her, holding onto her shoulders. It wasn't the person chanting though. Her body seized and the darkness consumed her again.

"I won't let you go," Fenrir hissed.

"What are you talking about?" Sakura asked, staring at a blue spirit in the shape of a wolf.

"They're trying to rid you of me, but your body is mine now!" it lunged at her.

Out of pure reaction, Sakura dodged, rolling to the side. "How?" she glanced around, it was only them. All around them was darkness, yet they could see each other clearly.

"A spell. From what I can tell, it's not strong enough to get rid of me completely, but I won't have control of your body," Fenrir hissed, being oddly open about it, "I'm sorry, but that means I will have to get rid of you to stay in control." Sakura's eyes went wide. She held her hand up to try and blast Fenrir, but nothing happened, "Won't work in here."

The Fenrir ring on her finger caught her eye. She closed her eyes. There was no way to know what would work, or even where she really was. It seemed like it should be inside her mind. "Umbra ferrum, duo," he sword appeared. Fenrir charged at her. She blocked with her swords. Fenrir bit down on the sword and pulled at it. It chomped down harder and Sakura fell back as the sword snapped. Fenrir bit through the rest of the blade, shattering it. A wave of hopelessness pushed through her.

"I know you're fighting in there Sakura, keep going. I know you can beat her. Please Sakura, don't give up, I'll be waiting for you."

A voice rang through her mind and she knew who it was. She would know that voice anywhere. Damon. He could always get through to her. It felt like someone grabbed her hand and she was instantly to her feet.

"Oh, I thought you had given up," Fenrir laughed.

Sakura just needed to focus. She had gone through so much training, it was time to put that to good use. Fenrir lunged at her again. Sakura dashed to the side and counterattacked, slicing at her. The sword cut Fenrir's cheek. It turned and attacked again. Sakura went to dodge again, Fenrir bit her leg. Blood dripped down her leg. Sakura threw her sword at her. She jumped back, but the sword hit Fenrir in the shoulder. Roaring, the wolf charged towards her. Ready, Sakura grabbed hold of Fenrir and rolled back, throwing her behind. Fenrir landed on her back. Sakura punched Fenrir, who caught her fist in her teeth. Sakura screamed out and tried to pull away. Blood trickled down her hand.

Fenrir went flying to the side releasing her.

"I thought you were a better fighter than that," she looked up to see Damon. But they were supposed to be in her mind, how was he here? Her eyes went wide and she stayed staring at him. "I know you like the view," he pulled her up close to him, "But it's much better up here."

"How?" Fenrir growled.

"Vampires have a lot of neat tricks, don't they? Especially ones that have been around for a while," Damon smirked. Sakura reached up and touched his cheek, as if checking if he was really there. He placed his hand overtop of hers, "It's really me." Fenrir lunged at them. Damon grabbed hold of Sakura and jumped back. "You're in really bad condition by the way. Seems like your injuries here, happen out there."

"Guess that means I have to get serious," Sakura sighed looking at her wounds. They hurt quite a bit, which was slowing her down.

"Seeing as it's your body, your mind, I'm not sure that's the only way. Even if you beat it up repeatedly, I think it would just keep getting up. But from what we can tell, you might have to accept Fenrir. It won't get rid of her, she'd be a voice in your head at worst, but you would have control of your body again," Damon explained.

"How the hell do I do that?" Sakura growled and got into a defensive stance as Fenrir charged towards her again.

"Stop doing that," Damon pushed her arms down, "Accept Fenrir. Absorb Fenrir. Stop fighting back."

"But..."

"Do you trust me?" she looked back between him and Fenrir.

"Yes," she replied. He stood behind her, wrapped his hands around hers. He knew her instinct was to dodge, it was hard to fight instinct.

"Close your eyes," Damon said as he held her there. She did as he said and waited. She could hear Fenrir's rapid footsteps getting closer. Resisting the urge to tense up her body, she gripped onto Damon tighter.

"I accept you," Sakura said as Fenrir lunged at her again.

Sakura gasped as she woke up. She was bound to a chair with chains in a cellar. There was a slight crunch sound behind her and a wrist appeared in front of her. "Drink, you're injured," Damon said as he leaned his head close to hers. It only took a moment for her injuries to start to recover.

"Who was doing the spell?" Sakura asked, not seeing anyone else.

"Both Bonnie and Leilani helped. I asked them to leave us along after you started getting injured," Damon started to pull the chains off. Sakura tried to stand up but her body was exhausted. "You need some actual rest," he lifted her up and headed up the stairs to her room.

"My head feels so odd. Like everything is spinning," Sakura complained, "And my head is heavy."

"Don't worry about it. The spell took it's toll, that's all. Some rest and you'll be good as new," Damon assured her as he laid her down in bed. Pulling the blanket over her, he kissed her forehead before heading out, "Call if you need anything, I'll come running." Sakura smiled as she drifted off to sleep.

Damon wakes up tied to a chair, like how Mason was when Damon killed him. Damon's ring is on the floor. Stefan came in and stared at him, "Low blow, Stefan. Low blow."

"What the hell happened to you?" he eyed him and glanced around the room.

"Whatever twisted ripper game this is, leave me out of it," Damon spat.

"I didn't do this," Stefan shook his head and put his hands up in innocence.

"Quit screwin' around!" Damon growled.

"I didn't do it," Stefan started to check the chains, "It's pretty messed up though, isn't it?"

"Yup," Damon sighed. Stefan ripped out the iron stick stabbed into him. Damon screamed out in pain. Stefan started to remove the chains. He gave Damon another look and left. "Yeah, not to worry. I'll just untangle myself," Damon rolled his eyes.

Mason is in the room with him, but Damon can't see him. Mason opened the curtains, letting sunlight in. Damon screamed as his skin started to burn.

Sakura's eyes burst open. Her phone started to ring. By the time she got it out, it stopped ringing and texts started flowing in. It was Leilani. It was about turning off our town's lights and flare up our lanterns in honor of the night of illumination started by their founders 150 years ago, a town festival. Also asking if she was okay, or well enough to come. Also about Jeremy acting weird, he was seeing Anna's ghost again. If she wanted, she could join Leilani and the girls as they hung lanterns. Sakura sighed and set her phone down on the bed beside her as she started to drift off again.

"We've got a problem," Damon drove up beside Leilani, Bonnie and Caroline, "Witchy. I think you got your voodoo wires all crossed when you got rid of Vicki Donovan."

"What do you mean, why?" Bonnie finished putting up a paper lantern.

"Because I'm pretty sure I just got spit-roasted by Mason Lockwood's ghost," Damon spat.

"Why would you think that?" Leilani asked.

"Maybe because he chained me to a chair and shoved a hot poker in my chest. Let's just say I'm having déjà vu," Damon shook his head.

"I thought you said that ghosts couldn't physically interact with people," Caroline said to Bonnie.

"They can't" Bonnie was flabbergasted.

"Yeah, well, I don't have time for a vengeful Lockwood. When I kill someone, they're supposed to stay dead. Whatever you screwed up, fix it," Damon growled before driving off.

"If it really is Mason, not Vicki doing this, then something is seriously broken," Leilani commented.

Bonnie's bag dropped to the ground, spilling out. Her grimoire was in it. It opened up to a page on its own. "A manifestation spell?" Bonnie said as she picked it up.

"One to see ghosts?" Leilani clarified.

"Sakura..." a familiar male voice resonated in her room. Sakura's eyes slowly opened, but only halfway. "You can hear me?" Sakura turned her head to the left and her eyes went wide.

"Allen? But I..." she trailed off.

"Killed me? Yes, I know. If I recall, I told you to," he laughed. "Don't worry, I hold no ill will against you. Something is happening between the other side, purgatory, and this side. Figured I'd stop by, see if you could see me," he kissed her forehead, "I don't know what's been going on, but you really have to stop doing dangerous things."

"That's unlikely," Sakura laughed.

"You look really tired, you should go back to sleep. Don't mind me, I'm just going to watch over you during this witchy ordeal," Allen sat down on the bed beside her, "I'm sorry about how things went. I would never hurt Leilani, you know that right?" He glanced down at her, but she was already asleep again. "Sleep well, my precious Sakura," he stroked her hand and saw it twitch, "You felt that..."

The girls made their way to an abandoned house, a private place to do the spell. "So this is where you brought Jeremy back to life?" Caroline looked around.

"Yeah. Sorry, I know it's creepy, but we needed a private place around here to do the spell," Bonnie sighed.

"Hmm. There's no chance it's haunted by the hundred dead witches who were horrifically burned to death in this very spot, is there?" Caroline laughed nervously.

"They're not here anymore. And they made it clear they were never coming back," Bonnie stated.

Caroline lit candles as Bonnie and Leilani held hands, starting to chant.

Damon was waiting for Ric in the bathroom at the Mystic Grill, "You know, I've had enough vampires today, thanks."

"Oh, come on. Have a drink with me. We've got trouble," Damon said seriously.

"No, you've got trouble. See, we're not a team. You tried to kill me. All right? We're not friends. I don't like you anymore," Alaric made himself clear.

"Ah! But remember back when you liked me and we conspired to kill Uncle werewolf Mason Lockwood? I mean you weren't really the one that killed him. But I had your assistance, and he knew we worked together," Damon thought back, he forgot, Sakura was right with him when he did it, "Oh crap. Sakura."

"Sakura? What's going on with her anyways? Is she back? Leilani was talking like she was, but you're here and not attached to her, so I can't help but wonder," Alaric eyed him as he waited for a response.

"I have to get back home. Mason is pissed I killed him and tried to kill me," Damon explained.

"I need a drink," Alaric left and sat down at the bar, with Damon following him.

"God, I miss whisky," they turned to see Mason. Mason took a drink and smashed the glass on Damon's head.

"Told ya," Damon frowned. Mason sat down and started drinking more. Damon's phone started receiving texts, "I am never going to hear the end of that damn necklace."

"One of you will pay for this, right? Cheers," Mason got a fresh drink.

"Let's get to it. I killed you. You want revenge. Get in line," Damon rolled his eyes.

"Actually, I want an apology," Mason stated.

Alaric burst out laughing, "Good luck with that."

"Don't you have a family to haunt? You know your nephew has turned into a mindless hybrid minion," Damon kept wishing he would go away.

"That's why I'm here. To help Tyler," Mason surprised them.

"Well, sorry to break it to you, buddy, but Tyler can't be helped. At least not while Klaus is alive. Which is, like, always," Damon tried to point out how hard he is to kill.

"Not necessarily. Not if you found a weapon that could kill him," Mason too another swig.

"There is no weapon that... What do you know?" Damon got serious again.

"I know you need to apologize," Mason said with a raised eyebrow.

"You got to be kidding me," Damon was getting anxious.

"Are you incapable of remorse? Just apologize!" Alaric burst out.

"You're right. I didn't have to kill you. I do a lot of things I don't have to do," Damon pointed out, kind of apologizing.

"That's good enough," Mason laughed.

"Meet me at the old Lockwood cellar. Bring a shovel. And come alone," Mason got up.

"What, you're going to bury me alive?" Damon asked.

"Don't tempt me," Mason smirked. "Don't worry, I won't go after your Saki," Mason said and left.

"I used that name what once? Maybe twice, how would he know that?"

Mason is lighting a lantern. Damon arrives with a shovel. "I'm surprised you showed," Mason laughed and took the shovel.

"You put a snag in my only other Klaus lead. So I'd say I'm highly motivated," Damon looked around nervously.

"Mikael? Yeah. That didn't turn out so great, did it?" Mason knew a lot more than he should.

"How do you know so much?" Damon asked with a high tone.

"There's not much to do on the other side but sit around and watch other people screw things up," Mason explained.

"What are we looking for?" Damon asked.

"There's an old Lockwood family legend about a weapon that can kill an original vampire. Like the rest of their secrets, they kept it buried," Mason attacked the wall with a shovel, but it didn't do anything.

"Oh, come on, give me the thing. Move," Damon took the shovel back and easily broke a hole in the wall.

They looked in. "Go for it," Mason nudged his head.

"You first," Damon eyed him suspiciously.

"What, you think I'm leading you into a trap?" Mason caught on.

"The thought crossed my mind," Damon said. Mason shook his head and went in first, with Damon close behind.

There were noises in the house. Sakura opened her eyes just slightly and looked around. She couldn't remember where she was. Allen was sitting on the bed still, aware of Caroline, Bonnie and Leilani looking for Elena's necklace. Everything was still fuzzy. She couldn't keep her eyes open, and it wasn't long before she passed out again.

"Leilani," Allen sighed. He wanted to help her, but with ghosts appearing, and Sakura having done a lot of things, he didn't want to leave her alone.

"I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Your motives are deceptively pure," Damon eyed him as they wander through the hidden part of the cellar.

"You talk the talk, but I know you'll do anything for your brother. You won't screw me over as long as we have the same agenda," Mason laughed it off.

"I'm supposed to believe you're not going to screw me over?" Damon scoffed. They stopped at a fork in the road, "All right. Which way?"

"I don't know. Flip a coin," Mason suggested.

"Aren't you supposed to be all-knowing?"

"I'm a ghost. I'm not God. Go left," Mason suggested.

Damon went left, but it there was nothing there, "Or not."

"You have trust issues. Anyone ever tell you that?" Mason shook his head.

Damon continues but stakes goes through his body. There's vervain in it. Mason leaves. "Yo. Help a brother out? Mason?" Damon tried to look around for him, "Oh, I'm having a bad day."

Mason came back in with a shovel, "Sorry. Thought you might need this." He breaks the stakes with the shovel and removes them, "You're welcome."

"What's your game, man? I killed you. I jammed my fist into your chest. I ripped your heart out. There's no way this whole buddy-trust act is real," Damon couldn't fathom it.

"You know what the other side is like? We're all alone. We watch the people we left behind and we regret our decisions. That's it. Look, I can't change what happened to me. But maybe I can change what happens to Tyler. I don't need revenge, Damon. I need redemption," Mason sighed, tired of explaining himself.

Allen heard the front door close as the girls left. He could sense someone beside him. He turned to see a pack of people, or rather werewolves and vampires standing beside Sakura. "What are you doing here?" Allen got to his feet. They walked up to Sakura and touched her, vanishing instantly. Sakura's body spasmed. "Sakura?!" Allen freaked out, "Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap." Her body was consumed by darkness, that quickly dissipated. Sakura went limp, but she was still breathing, "What the hell happened?"

Damon and Mason were still walking through the caverns. Mason arrived at the end, but Damon couldn't continue. He was blocked out. "God! This is not happening," Damon growled.

"What now?" Mason turned to him.

"I can't get through. It's like I'm not invited in. Wait!" Damon yelled at Mason.

"I'm not stopping just 'cause you're stuck. I'll let you know what I find," Mason was going to continue.

"Yeah, but..." Damon trailed off.

"Looks like you're gonna have to trust me," Mason smiled. Mason walked up to the wall and examined it.

"So? What'd you find?" Damon asked eagerly.

"It's in..." Mason vanished.

"No, no, no, no. No, where'd you go? Mason, Mason!" Damon yelled, but Mason was gone. There was no one to here his yelling. Damon pulled out his phone and called Alaric.

"They finished the spell. I can feel myself disappearing. Goodbye Sakura," Allen kissed her forehead. Sakura's eyes shot open, just in time to see him disappear.

A pain burst into her chest. She screamed out, holding onto her chest. "What's going on?" Sakura huffed.

"You're here. It's about time," Damon was being impatient.

"Didn't have anyone else to call?" Alaric sighed as he walked up to him in the cellar.

"No, actually, I don't. 'Cause I need a non-vampire to get in the cave. Sakura's out of commission at the moment and I don't want Leilani here. So you're pretty much the only one I trust for this," Damon explained, "I did try to call Sakura, but she's not answering, probably asleep."

"Well, you have a crappy way of showing that," Alaric rolled his eyes, figuring Damon didn't really trust him.

"Look, if Mason Lockwood can get over the fact that I killed him, can't you cut me a little slack, Ric?" Damon asked, tired of the attitude, regardless of his deserving it.

"I shouldn't have to get over it. I was your friend, Damon. You shouldn't have done it in the first place," Alaric spat.

"Well! Sometimes... I do things I don't have to do," Damon avoided apologizing.

"You're going to recycle that same crap ass apology you gave Mason Lockwood?" Ric caught onto him.

"Yeah. Well... I didn't mean it with him," Damon smiled at him and Alaric turned to the hole in the wall. Alaric sighed and went in. "So was Mason screwing with me, or is there something in there?" Damon tried to look in. Alaric didn't reply, but he kept looking, "Ric. Ric."

Alaric looked up close to the wall, "I found something."

"What is it?" Damon kept poking at the barrier.

The wall was covered in drawings, "I have no idea."

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed! Please Review.

Sorry for the delay, I still have yet to decide if I should continue or bring it to an end. I kind of need to decide before the next chapter, as that is where the split to continue or not is.

I have added a poll for it, to see what people want me to do. Please vote.
