Chapter 57: Remember Me
"It's been two days, why haven't you woken up yet Sakura?" Damon paced back and forth around her bed, "You're supposed to be better now." He pulled a chair up beside her, sat down and took her hand in his. Damon caressed her hand with his thumb, "We had you checked out medically, and you're fine, so please wake up. I know it was all magical trying to seal the Fenrir in you, but I'm seriously worried. Please come back." Her fingers twitched under his touch. Sakura's eyes opened a tiny bit, glanced over at him and closed again. "Sakura!" he was so glad to get even a slight response from her.
He kissed her hand and her eyes opened again, fully this time. She looked around the room in a panic and yanked her hand away from him. She looked at him with something he wasn't accustom to seeing in her, fear, "Where the hell am I?
"Sakura?" he reached his hand out and she backed away on the bed.
"Who the hell are you?" she blasted him away and phased through the floor, making a quick getaway.
"Sakura," Damon stood there stunned. Completely unable to fathom what happened.
Leilani and Alaric are in the hidden tunnels of the old Lockwood Cellar. With a flashlight in her hand she moved it around a lot, looking at everything. "Careful where you shine that thing. Bats hate the light," Alaric warned her.
"Wait, what? There are bats down here," Leilani's eye twitched.
Leilani looked around frantically. "Boo," Damon popped up behind her.
"Dammit Damon," Leilani punched him in the arm.
"We have a problem," Damon stated, "Well you kinda need to look through here and all, but I kinda, may have, sorta lost Sakura."
Alaric and Leilani stopped and turned to him, "What do you mean you lost Sakura?"
"She woke up, freaked out and did the 'Sakura' thing. She went through the floor and ran away," Damon looked around nervously.
"Damon!" Leilani screeched. "What do we do?" Leilani turned to Alaric for an answer.
"Sakura's missing?" Darien and Elena appeared beside Damon. Darien grabbed hold of Damon shirt and pushed him against the cold cave wall, "What did you do to her?"
"I didn't do anything," Damon smacked his hand away, "It's that Fenrir thing. It must have done something to her, which by the way, was supposed to take over you, not her."
"Tch," Darien grumbled and moved away from him.
"Elena, Darien, you stay with Alaric, I don't want him down here alone. We'll look for Sakura," Leilani said and didn't wait for anyone to say anything. She took Damon's hand and dragged him out of the cellar. "Did you at least see the direction she went in?" Leilani asked as she got into his car.
"She went through the floor before vanishing, so no, I can't see through the floor," Damon grumbled as he got into the drivers seat, "Where to first?"
"Home. My home," Leilani hoped she would head there.
"What is all this?" Elena looked at the drawings on the walls as Darien stood watch outside.
"Well, as far as I can tell, it's a story. In simple archaeological terms, it's a really, really old story," Alaric shown his light at various walls, "That right there is a moon cycle. A man. A wolf. A werewolf."
"I don't understand. I thought the Lockwood's came here with the original founders in the 1860s," Elena thought the Lockwood's were the only wolves in town.
"Ah, maybe the Lockwood's did, but according to this wall, these werewolves have been here a lot longer than that, a lot longer," he shown his light on a different spot, "Names, and they're not native. They're written in runic, a Viking script. This name here, when translated, it reads... Niklaus."
"Klaus," Elena gasped.
"And Elijah... And Rebekah," he continued.
"These are the names of the original family?"
"Carved into a cave that's… That's been here since way before the founding of Mystic Falls or even the entire new world, for that matter," Ric explained.
"Ok, this has gotta be one of Klaus' fakes," Darien suggested, having been listening the entire time.
"That could be true, except the last name up here made me think otherwise, Mikael," Alaric sighed.
"Mikael? Mikael, as in the vampire hunter who knows how to kill Klaus?"
"The door's unlocked," Leilani pushed it in, "I hope that's a good sign." Damon was about to step in when Leilani blocked him, "From the way you described it, Sakura freaked out after seeing you. You stay here, I'll go look."
"Fine," Damon crossed his arms and stepped off to the side, "Yell if you need help, I'll be listening."
Leilani walked inside, carefully checking each room. "Sakura? Are you in here? It's Leilani," she called out as she went upstairs. The door beside her opened.
"Leilani?" Sakura instantly pulled her into a hug.
"Oh my gosh. I was so worried about you," she hugged her back, "When Damon said you ran away, I didn't know what to think, we literally just got you back."
"Damon who?" they pulled apart and Leilani looked at her stunned, "Damon your boyfriend. Damon the guy who would do anything for you."
"A boyfriend? Me?" Sakura started to laugh, "What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the guy you danced with, on more than one occasion, even put on a dress for him. The guy you couldn't stand at first, but you had a common ground with and helped each other. The vampire who's never given it a thought to give you his blood to heal you. The one you trusted despite everything. The one who broke down the cement walls you put up around yourself, finally letting someone else get close to you," Leilani looked at her with such sad eyes.
"You're saying I have a vampire boyfriend? That doesn't sound right," Sakura shook her head.
"You don't remember me at all?" he appeared behind her. Eyebrows furrowed and eyes down. Pain written across his face. Sakura stared at him in confusing. He didn't look familiar at all.
"Sakura, what's the last thing you remember?" Leilani held onto her hand cautiously.
"I remember fighting the Fenrir. It had taken me over and you and Bonnie helped me out," she held onto her head as she thought back.
"Okay, let's be specific. The Mystic Falls pageant, who'd you go with?" Leilani prodded.
"I didn't go..."
"Who is Stefan's brother?"
"He doesn't have one?"
"You only forgot Damon," Leilani looked at him. He was completely stunned, Why just him? What caused it? More importantly, how to get her to remember. "Well you two could hang out and try to jog her memory," Leilani suggested.
"But I don't know him," Sakura shrugged, "You know how I am with strangers."
"He's not actually a stranger, you just think he is. I'll give you two a minute to talk, I'll be right back, I promise. I'm not going far," Leilani gave her hand a squeeze before heading off.
"The first time we met was at a coffee shop just out of town. The second time, in this room," Damon stared at the bed.
"There's no way I'd some guy I only met once before into my bedroom," Sakura scoffed, "Even if I forgot some things, I know myself well enough to know I wouldn't do that."
"Well I agree. Since you didn't let me in. Leilani let me in the house. I found you on the floor in your room. You even tried to feel me up when your phone woke you. But you got all shy and embarrassed and fell off the bed," Damon smiled as he thought back. In an instant, he had his arms around her waist.
"What are you doing, let go of me," she pushed at his chest, "Damn vampire strength." If it was a normal person, they wouldn't be able to hold her there. He let one hand go off her waist to push back a strand of hair. Sakura took the chance to slap him, but he caught her wrist. "Let go," she struggled.
"I'm not going to hurt you. I promise you that. But please, I need you to remember," he pulled her closer. With no space between them, he pushed her up against the doorframe. He grabbed hold of her chin, forcing her to look up. "Please remember," he whispered as she struggled, "I love you." She gasped just slightly and he leant in and kissed her. She slammed one fist into his shoulder a few times before giving in. Her body relaxed and back arced into him, deepening the kiss.
"Well, well," Leilani giggled and they separated. Sakura pushed him away and looked in another direction, feeling her facing going flush.
"She may not remember me, but her body sure does," Damon smirked.
"That still doesn't mean she'll ever remember," Leilani stated with a sigh.
"Although I'd prefer if she remembered me, in the end, the result will be the same. I'm not going anywhere. I'll just have to either make you remember, or make you fall in love with me again," Damon didn't take her eyes off her.
"I... I don't know what to think or do... Leilani says we were together..."
"And you body remembers," he cut her off.
"So I have to at least try. But that doesn't mean you can just go around kissing me," she pointed at him sternly. A cold metal clasp went around her left wrist and to Damon's right, "Leilani? What are you doing?"
"Making sure you give it a real shot," she giggled in reply.
"What about sleeping? And the bathroom?" Sakura tried to phase through it, but it didn't work.
"Magic handcuffs! Also with a button that gives a 15 minute separation timer!" Leilani was enjoying it a little too much.
"And sleeping?"
"He won't do anything to you, I promise. Yes, that means I trust him that much when it comes to you and that should mean something," Leilani smiled cheekily.
"Don't you have something to say about this? We're literally chained together," Sakura pulled at it.
"I don't mind. But what happens if we're apart for too long?" Damon inquired.
"The cuffs will bring you back together, you don't really have a choice. Now, we have other matters to handle as well," Leilani pointed out.
Out at Alaric's apartment, he was looking at the pictures of the cave while the others chatted in the back. "Do I want to know why you two are cuffed together?" Darien asked Sakura and Damon.
"I can't remember Damon, just Damon," Sakura replied and Elena and Alaric both stared at her, "This is Leilani's way of forcing me to try and remember him."
"If he does anything you don't like, anything at all, tell me. I'll be sure to rid you of your chains," Darien glared at Damon who was smirking the whole time.
"Anyways, what are you up to Alaric?" Sakura tried to pull everyone's attention away from her.
"These images tell a story, to learn the story, I have to decipher these images," Alaric held up pictures of the cave wall.
"Back to training," Darien handed Elena a stake.
"The ghost of Christmas past, Mason Lockwood, said that the cave would lead us to a weapon that could kill Klaus," Damon stated.
"Yeah, but doesn't Mikael have a weapon?" Elena asked. She tried to stake Darien, but he caught her wrist and pretended to bite her.
"Yes, which probably means the wall will lead us to Mikael, who we've already found and lost," Damon sighed.
"These images, at the very least, might tell us what that weapon is," Alaric sifted through the pictures more.
"Elena, why don't you try to talk to Rebekah, she might know," Sakura suggested.
"Why me? Aren't you two close?"
"I'm not the 'me' that she was friends with. I'm missing things at the moment, might want to keep that from her," Sakura looked off to the side, almost getting lost in thought. I know what it means. A familiar voice popped into her head. Fenrir.
"Let's go visit my brother while she does that," Damon tugged her along.
"I'll stay here and help Alaric," Leilani waved to Sakura.
Damon and Sakura head to the city jail cells. Stefan chained to a chair. "You know, if you guys are gonna keep me locked in here for the next decade, I think we can skip the routine visits," he rolled his eyes. Damon tugged Sakura in with him and Stefan stared at her confused. "What's going on here?"
"What, this?" Damon held up the handcuff, "Just bringing back the old Sakura."
"And she's not resisting?" he eyes her suspiciously, expecting Fenrir to resist more.
"Magic cuffs. So basically got rid of my advantage over vampires. Nice to see you again Stefan, although I don't know how you got here, I wasn't filled in," Sakura glared at Damon.
"One word, Lexi," Damon replied.
"Yeah she's a rough one, at least she's gone now," Stefan laughed, "So, why are you here?"
"What are you talking about? It's family day at vampire rehab. Just paying a visit to my baby brother," Damon put his hand on Stefan's head and shook his hair around.
"Go away."
"Nah. Nah, I thought we could hang out. Little brother bonding. How you been, Stef? Huh?" Damon stared at him with his arms crossed.
"You know, Klaus may want to keep Elena alive, but that doesn't mean she's safe with Rebekah," Stefan pointed out.
"Liar, liar, pants on fire, brother. Klaus compelled you to protect Elena, and if you thought for even a second that she was in danger, you'd be working a lot harder," Damon laughed.
"You got me."
"Yup."
"You got me. You're good. Congratulations. You can go now," Stefan tried to shoo him away.
"You really have given up," Damon shook his head.
"Actually, this is my happy face."
Damon breaks Stefan's chains. "What are you doing?" Sakura tugged on the chain.
"Screw this Lexi plan. I think we could all use a drink," Damon decided on his own.
"Isn't this whole handcuffed thing a little um... Odd to go out in public with," Sakura bit her lip nervously.
"No worries, I've probably done worse in public," Damon brought his arm over her shoulder and grabbed onto her hand, linking his fingers into hers.
"One more thing, I don't think we said... I can't remember Damon," Sakura stated and Stefan gave her an odd, confused look, mixed in with what seemed like sadness.
There was a knock at the door. "Bonnie!" Leilani pulled her into a hug instantly.
"Hey Leilani," Bonnie hugged her back.
"Bonnie. Come on in," Alaric nudged his head over.
"Got your message," Bonnie looked around at all the pictures, notes and post-its.
"Yeah, great. Uh... I'm sorry the place is such a mess. I'm obsessed," Alaric laughed.
"Brought you the necklace that wouldn't die," Bonnie handed it over.
"That's great. Are you ok?" Alaric looked at her concerned.
"Been better," she replied and Leilani pat her on the back and linked arms with her.
"Listen, Jeremy is an idiot, and I know this with certainty because I was once a Jeremy. Trust me. We learn eventually," Alaric said, knowing how Jeremy messed up with Anna.
"So I've been staring at this image all day, wondering why it looked so familiar..." he held up a picture of a symbol. He held the necklace beside it, "And I was right."
"It's the same design," Leilani looked back and forth.
"So your grandmother said this necklace belonged to the witch that put the hybrid curse on Klaus, right? This symbol is repeated all across the wall, and I've been trying to figure out what it meant. Now I know," he wrote down on a post-it, put it on the picture and held it up, "Witch."
"What are we drinking?" Damon sat down with an arm still over Sakura's shoulder and Stefan on the other side.
"Hopefully something a little bit warmer, a little blonder," Stefan called the waitress over.
"Hi," Callie smiled as she came over.
"Hello, Callie. I would love a shot of your best whiskey, and my brother here would love a shot of you," Damon grabbed her arm and compelled her. Sakura sighed and rolled her eyes.
"What's the catch, Damon?" Stefan asked.
"No catch, brother. Drink up. It's on me," he smiled. Stefan vamps out and bites her arm, "Hi Callie, this is Sakura, my girlfriend."
"Don't introduce me like that," Sakura sighed, "Are you sure you want me here while you bond with him?"
"Anywhere I am, I want you to be," Damon replied.
"I don't have any memories of you. What makes you think I'll accept your behaviour?" Sakura tried to get her hand away, but his grasp was too tight.
"Why did you let me hold your hand so long before even trying to separate?" Damon retaliated. "Be honest," he whispered, looking straight into her eyes.
"Trying to compel me?" Sakura frowned.
"Nope. More like trying to flirt, guess I failed," he laughed.
She closed her eyes as she thought. "Comforting, familiar feeling. A safe feeling," Sakura opened her eyes, but avoided looking at Damon.
"Alright Callie, bring grab some drinks and hang out with us at that table," Damon nudged his head to one nearby. "Come along brother," Damon rearranged his grasp on Sakura and picked her up.
"What do you think you're doing?" Sakura glared at him and Stefan laughed. They sat down at the table, with Sakura staying on his lap, "Do I really have to sit here?"
"Yes," Damon smiled and did his signature eye thing, "You're so cute when you're flustered." Sakura just kept looking away. "Increased heartrate," he whispered into her ear and she twitched.
"Just because I can't phase through these cuffs, doesn't mean I can't use magic," Sakura said in a warning tone.
"Feisty," Damon smiled, glad she hadn't changed too much.
Callie sat with Stefan as they started their drinking game. Bouncing coins into a shot glass. It was Stefan's turn and he got it in, "Drink up, brother."
"Will you get us another bottle of this, hmm?" Damon asked Callie and she walked off, "You've been on this bunny diet for the better part of 50 years, so how is it that Saint Stefan, of all people, gets good at a drinking game?"
"Well, the bunny diet gave me a lot of time to practice. Wallow in despair. Drown in guilt. Regret my existence. It's precision born out of tragic boredom," Stefan got another coin in, "Drink up, brother."
"All that effort wasted trying to tell you how boring you were, and now you finally agree with me?" Damon took a shot.
"Damon, you are worse than Elena. Getting me drunk. Brotherly bonding. What, you think I'll break down, and you can pull me back from the edge? Is that it?" Stefan missed his shot.
Callie came back with more drinks and Damon got the coin in, "Drink up, brother." Damon pulled Callie's arm over to Stefan. "You know what, I feel like dancing," Damon called another employee over and compelled her to turn up the music. "Come on Sakura," he stood up with her, "Lets dance."
"You know what, I'm not really that into dancing," Sakura pulled him back.
"I already know you're an amazing dancer. You just don't like to around other people," Damon was glad the chain was long and cuff was loose, he put his hand on her waist and pulled her close. "We danced like this before at the school dance," Damon spun her around, "We even did the old 'no touch' dance at the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. Come on Sakura, move it like I know you can." Sakura rolled her eyes at him and he sighed, he'd have to force it more. He whispered to the employee to change it to something slower. He put Sakura's hands around his neck and held onto her waist, "Please."
She knew she had to try, he seemed to be. "Okay," he gazed at her in such a way that she didn't want to look away. As they danced, it felt like everything else fell away. After a few moments, Sakura pulled away, "Okay, so maybe we danced."
"Not only that one. Twist time!" he called out. The music changed. "Come on, you know it's fun," he danced around her. Sakura shook her head, but had a smile on her face. He grabbed both her hands as he twisted and she followed along. Near the end Sakura's head started to her. A few images flashed through her head of her dancing with him. "Sakura, your nose," Damon looked at her concerned, blood was dripping out. He walked her back to the table and saw Stefan still drinking, "Hey, hey, hey. Ease up. Ease up. She's giving us her employee discount." He pulled Callie away and put a scarf around her neck, "Now just run along."
"What's wrong with her?" Stefan nudged his head towards Sakura, who was wiping the blood off.
"Sounds a lot like concern," Sakura eyed him.
Stefan got up and went back to the bar, with them following, "All right, time to fess up. What's the point of the jailbreak?"
"I thought you could use a hug, Stefan," Damon opened his arms.
"Come on, Damon. You know Elena's gonna hate you for letting me out, and we both know that you care about what she thinks," Stefan shook his head.
"Not as much as you think," Damon smiled, "And maybe I wanted to remind you what freedom was like before Klaus took it from you."
"As long as Klaus is alive, I do what he says," Stefan sighed.
"That's my point, Stefan. You've given up. Now, you can sit around and be his little bitch, or you can get mad enough, and you can do something about it," Damon was getting fed up.
"Damon, he can't be killed," Stefan tried to get his point across.
"Maybe I can help with that. The Salvatore boys, I presume," Mikeal popped up beside them, "And Sakura of course."
"Mikael," Stefan looked at him wide eyed.
"Has Klaus entered the country?" Mikael asked.
"I can't tell you," Stefan replied.
"Has he spoken to you since he left?" he tried a different question.
"I can't tell you," Stefan repeated.
"All right. Can you tell me the last time you spoke to Niklaus?"
"I am compelled to do what he says, and he says to keep my damn mouth shut," Stefan was getting tired of it.
"I really hope this game of 20 questions isn't your secret weapon," Damon stared at him in wonder.
"You see, Damon, I've been a vampire hunter longer than you've been alive. It's why I found you here. It's why I'm gonna find Niklaus. Well, Klaus has been running for about a thousand years, so if you think you're gonna get a workaround he..." Mikael shoved his fist into Damon's chest, Sakura instantly wanted to jump in to help, her eyes glowing already, even Stefan flinched, "Careful, Stefan, Sakura. One move, and his heart's gone. Now... Where is Klaus? Come on. What's the trick question, Stefan? One twist and he's dead. Unless you don't care, of course."
"His emotions have been shut off. He can't care," Damon mumbled.
"Really? His link to Klaus is so strong that... He would let his own brother die? No ideas? Hmm? Think, Stefan," Mikael was pushing it. Stefan didn't answer, "I guess you're right. He's a dead end. And so are you, Damon."
"Wait. I can bring him back. I can lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls," Stefan suggested.
Mikael removed his fist and grabbed a tissue, "And there is our loophole. Just had to rile him up a bit. Get Klaus back to Mystic Falls, and I will gladly drive a stake through his heart. Fail... I'll drive it through yours."
"I won't let you close enough to them," Sakura threatened.
"Normally I wouldn't take threats like that, neither seriously or letting you live, but there's something different about you," Mikael vanished.
Sakura put her wrist in front of Damon, "Drink, you need to heal."
He didn't think twice and bit down, "Thanks Sakura."
Back at the Lockwood cellar, Elena arrived, joining Alaric, Bonnie, Leilani and Darien. Alaric started to show her what they had put together, "Yeah. Filled in what we could. Got vampire, werewolf, slaughter, mayhem, et cetera, et cetera." Alaric put a post-it for each different symbol meaning.
"That's the white oak tree that was used in the spell to create the vampires. Which means that was when they burned down the tree, destroying the only way that they could be killed," Elena pointed out.
"Okay, so tree equals weapon, sort of, but we already knew that. What we're not sure about is this. We've got the witch symbol and what looks like a bleeding heart. Upside-down figures usually signify death of some kind," Alaric pointed at it in thought.
"Mikael killed the witch by ripping out her heart. But why is that one connected to the witch's death?" Elena kept thinking to the story she heard from Rebekah.
"I don't know. We haven't gotten that far," Bonnie sighed.
"Oh my God. Rebekah doesn't know the real story," Elena gasped. "I have to tell her," Elena took the pictures, "She needs to know it was Klaus that killed her mother, not Mikael."
"I'm coming with you," Darien followed her off, not trusting Rebekah to have a kind reaction.
Damon, Sakura and Stefan are headed back to the car. "Well, I give you 10 points for flair," Damon laughed.
"At least now we know where Klaus and Elijah learned their tricks from," Stefan shook his head thinking about Mikael.
"Don't think you had to wait till the last second to have your breakthrough, though," Damon rubbed the spot where Mikael stabbed into him.
"Didn't have a breakthrough, Damon," Stefan denied it.
"'Ooh. Ooh, my brother's about to die, and I just had to save his life for the billionth time.' Careful, Stefan. Your humanity's showing," Damon imitated him.
"Actually, you know what? You're right, Damon. You're right. You reminded me what my freedom felt like. Ah. And when we kill Klaus, I'll be free, free to leave. See, I didn't do this for you, Damon. I did it for myself," Stefan tried to prove him wrong.
"Sure, Stefan. Whatever you say," Damon said in a sing-song voice.
"Why are you doing this, huh? What do you want from me? Why is everybody trying to save me?" Stefan threw his hands up in frustration.
"Because I have to, Stefan. Because you're in this mess with Klaus because you saved my life, because I owe you. And I can't just leave you in a cell to rot," Damon was starting to get angry.
"Aww. Better be careful, brother. Your humanity's showing," Stefan laughed. Damon punched him. Stefan got up quick to retaliate.
"Quit it," they both stopped instantly, "No brawls. Remember I'm literally linked to him. You both have to agree to stop before I release you."
After a long call to Elena, explaining everything, they headed to Sakura's home, so she'd be comfortable. "So, how'd the day go, remember anything?" Leilani greeted them at the door.
"I had a few images flash through my head and got a nosebleed," Sakura replied. Leilani stared at her with her mouth open, not sure what to say. "I don't know if remembering is good or not at this point."
"I think you need to break through that wall and remember. If you're so worried, we can keep a little bit of my blood in your system, just in case," Damon suggested.
"If that went really bad, wouldn't she turn into a vampire?" Leilani worried.
"Not the worst thing that could happen. Quite frankly I wouldn't mind. Sexy, hot vampire girlfriend," Damon gave them a thumbs up.
"It's up to you Sakura. I think you should try for a little longer before really deciding," Leilani gave them a quick smile before walking away.
"Now what?"
"Lets just go to sleep," Sakura yawned.
"You don't remember me, but you're bedding me already?" Damon smiled.
"Ha, ha, very funny," Sakura smacked him in the gut, "Anymore comments like that and I'll force you to sleep on the floor."
"Wait, that means at least I get to stay on the bed," Damon cheered as they walked upstairs, "Being tied to me hasn't been so bad, has it?"
"No, you're... An interesting person."
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed!
