Madge rests in the doorway, staring into the living room where everyone is exchanging presents. She smiles, sipping on her eggnog as the kids sit down to open their presents.
"Why aren't you in there?" Gale asks. Madge tilts her head and finds him leaning on the door frame opposite her, sipping on his own eggnog. "Didn't you do the gift exchange?"
"No," Madge answers. "I RSVP'd too late."
Gale takes a swig from his mug. "No one told me about it," he says. She smiles into her cup and returns to staring at the kids. "I wasn't even supposed to be home for Christmas, you know."
"That's what Katniss said," Madge nods. Gale has been living in District 2 for the past couple of months, Madge is pretty sure this is his first time he's been back since he moved away. "What changed your mind?"
Gale shrugs. "I missed them." Madge watches his younger siblings laughing at the presents that they open. A doll, a new book. "Missed a lot of people."
His gray eyes flicker toward Madge and she quickly takes another sip of her eggnog, realizing that her mug is getting empty. "They missed you too," Madge murmurs. She brushes a strand of her hair behind her ear and finally looks up to him, their eyes meeting. "Do you like District 2?"
"It's not the same," he answers. "Too far away. Not what I thought it'd be like."
"So you'll come back, then?" Gale smirks at the tone of her voice, perhaps a bit too hopeful. Both of them take awkward sips of eggnog, returning their eyes to the kids and their presents.
"Hey," Peeta's pops up in front of them. "I had a lot of eggnog," he says. "The kind the kids can't have."
"That was for Haymitch, Mellark," Gale frowns.
Peeta shrugs and laughs. "You should have some Mr. Moody, maybe it'll loosen you up a bit." Peeta's eyes flicker up toward the ceiling and then he smirks, gesturing upward. "Mistletoe," he says.
Madge looks up quickly, her cheeks heating up at once, and taking her final swig of eggnog. Maybe when she gets a refill she should switch to the kind that's supposed to be for Haymitch.
When she looks back down Peeta is gone, but Gale has his signature smirk. Out of eggnog, Madge doesn't know how to distract herself. Gale leans down before she knows what's happening.
