A Second for A Lifetime

"You were supposed to take care of him!" Lily screamed, sobbing in to her hands. "Why didn't you take care of him?"

James shook his head, his guilt and shame written all over his face. "Lily, I'm sorry," he moaned, his pain tangible. "We'll get him back, I swear to you. We'll get him back."

She shook her head, leaving the room. He heard her climb the stairs of their home. He knew she was going to the nursery; the nursery where their son should be peacefully sleeping the night away.

The pain of not knowing what was happening to Harry was indescribable, the guilt even more so. He'd only looked away for a second, just one second, and then Harry was gone and James didn't know who or why or how.

He didn't blame Lily for blaming him, he blamed himself.

Aurors were swarming their home, the Order were out searching in force, and all James could do was stare into the dwindling fire and pray for the safe return of his little boy.

Minutes turned into hours into days into weeks until a month passed by with no sign of Harry.

"I can't… I can't do this anymore."

James had been expecting the words, but it didn't make them hurt any less. He stared into the beautiful green eyes he'd loved since he was eleven.

"You're leaving."

It wasn't a question, but she nodded anyway.

"I just. On some level, I know it wasn't your fault, but… I can't look at you."

"Will you come back?"

She shrugged.

They both knew the answer.

James never gave up hope. He searched and he searched and he searched.

He just wanted his family back.
