I don't own The Hunger Games.
Detective Mason felt all eyes turn to her as she walked briskly against the Panem Town University quad. By now, rumours concerning the Evans case had reached all ears. They spread like wildfire in small towns such as Panem. Some thought that Clove and Glimmer had killed Cato so that they could be together. Others thought that Katniss Everdeen had shot him with her bow and arrow and pushed his car into the lake to throw the police off of the scent. There were even some rumours circulating that Johanna was some sort of Robocop, a strict and badass enforcer of the law. Partially true, she thought to herself as she entered the dorm, building that housed Finnick and Cato. The door to their room was slightly ajar, so Johanna walked in without knocking.
"Hell, son, do you never clean up in here?"
Finnick and a dark haired girl shot up from where they had been making out on his bed.
"Jesus Christ!" Finnick snapped. "You scared the hell out of me! Since when did cops break and enter?"
"Door was open." Johanna said, jerking her head towards the door. She pushed her sunglasses to the top of her head and turned to the girl, who was red as a tomato.
"And you are?"
"Annie." The girl swallowed. "Annie Cresta."
"Why are you here?" Finnick sighed and flopped back down onto the bed, sending an empty soda can clattering to the floor. The same disgusting trash littered the floors as the last time Johanna had stopped by. This was clearly a boys' dormitory.
"I have a few more questions concerning your roommate Cato Evans." Johanna folded her arms across her chest and turned her gaze to Annie, who squirmed.
"I'll see you later, Finn." She stuttered.
"Yeah, later. Love you."
"Love you too." Annie mumbled as she all but ran out of the room.
"Girlfriend?" Johanna asked, raising a slender eyebrow.
"Yeah." Finnick sighed and raked a hand through his bronze hair. "All due respect Detective, but why are you here?"
"I told you. I have questions." She leaned against the doorframe and smirked at him.
"Shoot." Finnick shrugged. "Though I doubt I'll be much help. I've told you what I know."
"Oh Mr Odair, I think you'll be more of a help than you know."
"Uh, okay…"
"Son-"
"Stop calling me that! You're what, twenty two? Twenty three?" Finnick groaned in despair.
"When you become the youngest, most decorated detective on the force, you can tell me what I can and can't call you." Johanna narrowed her eyes and Finnick and pushed off of the wall.
"You said you had questions?" Finnick pinched the bridge on his nose, obviously irritated. Johanna smirked again.
"Why didn't you tell me that you and Cato had a blow-out fight recently?" Johanna snapped into interrogation mode, a poker face replacing the smirk.
"Who told you that?" Finnick sat up again, seeming to become more serious himself.
"Doesn't matter." The detective shrugged.
"I don't know why I asked. It was Clove, right?" Finnick look at Johanna. But realised he would get no response. "Look, it was stupid. That's why I didn't mention it."
"What was it about?" Johanna walked slowly around the room, re-examining everything that she had previously inspected.
"Girls. I love Annie with everything I have. Cato loves Clove that… Or at least, that's what I thought."
"Continue."
"When Glimmer transferred here, he didn't care. Clove was it for him, said she always had been and he just hadn't realised it. He spoke to her and they got pretty close again, but that was it. Then he found out that Clove was pregnant…It was hard on him. It was hard on both of them, but Cato's our star quarterback. He's in his second year of college and he's already got NFL teams watching him. The idea of supporting a family really freaked him out, and he turned to Glimmer. They kept getting closer, and I wasn't cool with that. I thought that he had with Clove what Annie and I had, but I would never do that to her. That's why we fought- I didn't like the way he was going about things." Finnick explained. Johanna had been making notes in her pad of paper, and she tapped her pen against the metal bindings.
"Was Cato cheating on Clove?" She asked thoughtfully.
"No. At least, I don't think so. I'm not actually sure. Glimmer has a way with guys." Finnick laid back on his bed again and sighed. "I miss him."
"I'm sure you do, son." Johanna pocketed her notepad. "But I happen to know that your father is a cod fisherman."
"Yeah. So?" Finnick asked indifferently.
"So Mr Odair, fish oil comes from cod. I'm sure you've been slicing and dicing them since before you could walk. How convenient." Johanna now stood over Finnick, looking down on him imposingly.
"This is ridiculous. I wouldn't hurt Cato, he's my best friend."
"You thought he wouldn't hurt Clove."
"She's not hurt. Yet." Finnick sat up again and fidgeted restlessly. "Look, I didn't do this. I have no reason too. Guys fight all the time, and they get over it just as quickly. I'm there for Cato."
Johanna walked back towards the door. She rested on hand on the door handle and spoke without turning around to face Finnick.
"I'll be in touch, Odair."
…
Two interrogations in the space of a half hour? There was no rest for the wicked, and not rest for the ones that tried to catch them. Johanna was stood outside the humanities building, waiting for a seminar to let out. Beetee had informed her that Glimmer Carvalho was a media studies major, and had emailed her a copy of the girl's class schedule. This was her last class before lunch, and Johanna intended to capitalise on that time. When the stream of students let out of the building, she spotted Glimmer almost instantly. She was, as everybody had told her, very beautiful with her long blonde hair and blue eyes. But Johanna had learned during her time on the force that looking like an angel didn't mean you weren't a devil.
"Glimmer Carvalho." Johanna stopped the girl before she could walk past her. She tapped the golden badge on her belt. "I'm Detective Johanna Mason. Let's take a walk."
"What's this about, Detective?" Glimmer only had a trace of an accent when she spoke, which was impressive considering she had only transferred mere months ago.
"The mysterious disappearance of Cato Evans." Johanna said coolly, leading Glimmer down a path that only held a handful of students.
"Ah. I was wondering when I'd get roped into this." Glimmer sighed.
"'Roped in?' Why, it seems to me like you're more than 'roped in', Miss Carvalho." Johanna's sunglasses were back on her face, completing her intimidating look.
"What do you mean by that?" Glimmer looked up at her, wide-eyed. Johanna guessed that she had never spoken to detective in her life.
"Well, you dated Cato. I have it on good authority that the two of you were growing very close again. And then there's the small fact of the fistfight you had in the streets with his girlfriend." Johanna steered Glimmer into the university's gardens. It was a hot day, and students were lounging around studying, or playing ultimate Frisbee.
"I didn't attack Clove." Glimmer stated, folding her arms across her chest in annoyance.
"That's not what she said."
"Well, why aren't I under arrest then?" Gimmer looked into Johanna's eye defiantly, and received only a cold stare back.
"Because I have bigger fish to fry, Carvalho." Johanna hissed. "When was the last time you spoke to Cato Evans?"
"Last week." Glimmer shrugged. "We went for coffee."
"Just coffee?" Detective Mason raised an eyebrow at the younger girl.
"I'm not sure I understand what you're implying." Glimmer was stubborn, that was for sure. Cato clearly had a type.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about, Miss Carvalho. Everybody I've spoken too has mentioned your name. Most people are saying that you were going in for the kill." Johanna caught a Frisbee before it could hit her shoulder and flung it in the opposite direction.
"It was common knowledge around campus the Cato was falling for me again." Glimmer sighed as she pulled her long hair into a ponytail.
"He ever say that?"
"He didn't have to. We had something special back in Brazil. He didn't say he was going to leave Clove for me, but I knew he was about to. A guy like Cato didn't need to be tied down by that sort of situation. He needs to flourish during college." Glimmer did a good job of sounding laidback, but Johanna could easily see how to build her irritation level up.
"That's not what I've heard." She chuckled.
"Excuse me?" Glimmer snapped, her hands going to her hips. "What would you know?"
"I know that he loves Clove. She's said it. Finnick's said it. He, in fact, described to me exactly how deep their love was." Johanna said, poking the bear.
"You can think what you want." Glimmer tried to sound breezy, but it came out as more of an irritated snap. "I know Cato. He was close to leaving Clove, so close. I'm the only one for him, he said it to me in Brazil. It was never Clove. She's the one you should be questioning."
"Oh, I know how to do my job Carvalho." Johanna's phone started to ring. "I have to take this. Stay here."
She stepped a few feet away and answered the phone.
"Johanna." Beetee's voice crackled through the phone. "Get down to the precinct."
"What is it?" Johanna asked, her curiosity peaking.
"I've cracked into Cato Evans' laptop. There's something that you should see."
