Disbelief
"You know this is just a formality, right?" Lily murmured to Hugo. "We all know I'm as green as they come."
Hugo snorted. "Uh huh. Just like we know that I'm so blue, I practically bleed it. Dad's going to be so irritated when none of his kids are Lions."
Lily grinned. "My dad already know's I'm gonna be a snake. He's cool with it."
"Uncle Harry is so understanding."
"Uncle Ron will only sulk for… about three years, Hugo. No big deal."
Hugo rolled his eyes, nudging Lily with his elbow when her name was called. She walked forward confidently, ignoring the murmurs at her name. Even at the young age of eleven, she was used to the stares and the mutters whenever the name Potter was uttered.
Anyone would think it hadn't been twenty years.
She sat on the stool, offering Neville - Professor Longbottom - a grin when he placed the hat on her head gently.
"Ah, another Potter," the hat said in her head. "And just like your father, you'd do well in any house. The question is, where do I put you?"
Lily pictured herself in green and silver robes, her enthusiasm for Slytherin clear in every thought.
"Hmm, Slytherin, eh? Well, yes, you would do well in Slytherin," the hat mused. "But, I believe you are better suited to… RAVENCLAW!"
The last word was shouted to the hall at large, and Lily froze for a second as Nev-Professor Longbottom took the hat from her head. She pushed herself to her feet and walked to the cheering Ravenclaw house table, meeting Hugo's eyes.
He was staring at her with as much disbelief as she was feeling.
The rest of the sorting passed by in a haze as Lily stared at the Slytherin table, shrugging her shoulders when Albus raised his eyebrow at her.
The disbelief only intensified when, after a long minute on the stool, Hugo moved towards the Slytherin table in his own daze.
Maybe the hat was finally getting addled in it's old age, Lily thought as she watched Hugo slide in beside Al. That was the only explanation.
