"Fifty cents for the cheek, a dollar for the lips," Gale shakes his head as he stares at the poster. The college fair hadn't had the kissing booth around for years but for some unknown reason they brought it back this year. "This is bullshit. Who would pay to kiss someone?"
"You would," Thom murmurs as a smirks in his direction. "Madge Undersee's one of the candidates for an hour in the afternoon." Gale spins around to face his friend and Thom nods to confirm what he'd said. "Delly told me so. She's going to have a long line of suitors and you know it."
Gale's skin feels hot and his hands ball into fists. "Why would she do that?" he nearly growls.
"Because all the money raised is going to support cancer research, dumbass," Thom answers. And Madge's mother was diagnosed last year with breast cancer. Gale remembers vividly. She and Katniss were roommates then and Katniss was over Gale's place more often than not. "She needs to be alone," Katniss had said.
Madge is stronger now, and her mother's on a fast track to recovery, but it's still an issue she keeps up with. "I guess we're going to the fair," Gale grumbles. But he isn't too happy about it.
As Thom predicted, Madge has a pretty long line compared to a few of the others in the nearby booths. She's fairly well-known on campus and is overall very good looking, so even if no one knew who she was someone still would pay to get a kiss.
"You gonna wait in line?" Thom asks. "Or should I? Just for fun."
"Literally fuck off," Gale mutters. He gets in Madge's line because though he totally hates the idea of Madge kissing so many strangers, he wants to make sure she remembers that he was here. "Isn't Delly around or something?"
Thom laughs, leaving Gale alone to wait in line. It's annoying but it moves fairly quickly, and soon he reaches Madge. The look of surprise on her face when she sees him is totally worth it.
"Gale," she says as she arches an eyebrow at him. "What are you doing here?"
"Came to donate to charity," he responds. Gale slides a dollar bill across the counter to her. She arches her other eyebrow now. "You're the prettiest one here," he says, as though that will make her less suspicious.
"Ha-ha," Madge returns. "Two on the cheek, or one on the lips?" she asks as she takes the dollar.
"What do you think, Princess?"
"Hm." Madge leans forward and grabs his chin, quickly kissing both of his cheeks. Gale pulls away and arches an eyebrow at her. "Thank you for your donation," she says. Gale laughs and shakes his head at her, moving out of line so the next person can get his kiss. Gale loops back around and fishes in his pocket for another dollar. This time when he hits the front of the line Madge looks amused. "Back so soon?" she asks.
"You're funny, Undersee," he says, handing her the dollar. "I want a real kiss."
"Sixty two."
Gale narrows his eyes in her direction. "What?"
"I've kissed sixty two other people on the mouth today. You sure you want to be sixty three?" Gale looks down at the dollar and gesture forward. He knows she disinfects between each person. "Fine," Madge hums. She grabs his chin gently and this time kisses him on the lips. Very, very quickly. "There you go," she murmurs.
"That was it?"
"That was it," she confirms. Gale leans backwards a bit, surprised to find that she looks sad. "I have a line, Gale."
He shuffles a bit before striding away from her. Gale looks over his shoulder at the line she has and fidgets for his wallet again, pulling it out with a huff. "Twenty dollars?" he hears Thom ask. Gale whirls around to find his friend with a stick of cotton candy. "You're gonna spend twenty dollars on Undersee?"
"I have a plan," Gale mutters, getting back in line.
This time when he reaches Madge she looks upset. "Why are you back?" she asks with a sigh.
He slides his money over to her. "What'll this get me?" he asks.
Madge looks at the bill. "Twenty dollars?" she asks. "Um, twenty quick kisses, or forty cheek kisses. I could do thirty kisses on one cheek and ten on the other, or all forty on one, or even-"
"What about a date?" Gale cuts her off.
Madge's face turns red. "What?"
"Will it get me a date?"
Madge lifts her hands to her cheeks and looks past him at the line. "This isn't funny, Gale."
"I'm not trying to be funny, Undersee," he murmurs, leaning towards her. "I want to take you on a date. And make you forget about all sixty two of the other people you've kissed today."
"Well it's seventy three now," she says softly. He tilts his head and frowns, causing her to smile a little. "Sorry."
"What do you say, hm?"
Madge snatches the money from his hand and puts it in her collection bucket quickly. "I'd say thank you for the donation," she responds. Gale's face falls slightly but she keeps talking. "And that I've had some pretty good kissers today so you have a lot to live up to." Madge leans forward, cupping his cheeks and kissing him quickly. "And that you'd better text me," she murmurs against his lips.
Gale grins and pulls away as he nods his head. "See you tonight," he calls striding off. He doesn't even care that her line is the longest.
