Meant For Other Things

"What are you doing?" Andromeda asked quietly, standing in the doorway.

Teddy dropped her wand, looking sheepish. She summoned the wand silently, stowing it in her robe pocket.

"What were you doing, sweetheart?" she asked again, taking a seat at the table.

Tears brimmed in his eyes as he crossed the kitchen to stand beside her.

"I just want to be normal, Grandma," he replied, a sob in his words. "I just want to know what it feels like to be magic."

"Oh sweetheart," she murmured, her heart breaking for him. She wrapped her arms around him, holding him close against her chest. "Being a squib doesn't make you abnormal."

He sniffled against her shoulder. "But I'm not like the others. Harry said that James is already showing accidental magic. Why can't I be like that? I want to do magic too, Grandma."

"I know, baby, but sometimes, these things just happen. You're still an amazing boy, and you're going to grow up into an amazing man, you hear me?"

"But -"

"But nothing. Sweetheart, learning magic isn't the be all and end all. You could grow up to study Muggle medicine and be a doctor, or you could train to fight fire, or be a policeman. You could be an artist or a musician, or any number of things. No matter what, you'll always have me, and you'll always have your Uncle Harry, and you'll always have all the people who love you."

"Why me?" Teddy sobbed, his tears running freely now, soaking her robe. "Why did it happen to me?"

"Because you're meant for other things, sweetheart. That doesn't make you any less special."

Teddy slumped against her and she rocked him gently.

"How about we go and get some ice cream, huh? I can even firecall your Uncle Harry and see if he can meet us there?"

Teddy nodded against her shoulder, his chest still heaving with sobs. Andromeda squeezed him tight before releasing him.

She knew this wouldn't be the last conversation they had about Teddy's lack of magic, but she knew, with the support around him, that eventually, he'd be okay.
