Familiar Eyes
He sat at his desk, staring into space as the parchment in his hand crumpled under the pressure of his fist. He'd known that he should intervene, had been worried for months about Regulus doing something stupid.
Naively, Rodolphus hadn't actually expected Regulus to do anything.
He knew he should burn the parchment he'd crushed into a ball, but as he straightened it out on the desk to read again, he couldn't bring himself to cast the charm that would turn it to ash.
Regulus was gone, and there was nothing he could do about that. He'd never hold the smaller man in his arms again, would never hear the glorious sounds of pleasure that only Rodolphus could pull from him, would never feel the weight of Regulus splayed out on his chest, his breathing heavy with exertion.
Rodolphus wanted, needed, craved to take his anger out on someone, because he couldn't flay Regulus for being so stupid because Regulus was gone.
…
He followed silently behind the lone figure, his anger stirring even more so than it had been since he'd received the letter.
Logically, he knew that attacking the man in front of him wouldn't do anything, but the need for revenge was so much that Rodolphus couldn't deny himself. He would release his anger, because if he didn't, it would burn him up from the inside out.
"Crucio."
The figure dropped, twitching and flailing on the floor in seconds. Rodolphus pushed his anger into his magic, pressing the spell longer and longer.
He let up, approaching the figure so that he was standing directly over him.
Familiar eyes stared up at him, filled with pain and confusion masked by tears. The eyes were Rodolphus' undoing, the spitting image of the figure's brother.
"You made him doubt his path," Rodolphus snarled. "You made him question, you made him doubt, you killed him."
Sirius Black didn't reply. Instead, he screamed when the torture curse hit him square in the chest for a second time.
…
Rodolphus hadn't been able to kill Sirius. His eyes, so like Regulus', had saved his fate. Rodolphus couldn't kill Sirius anymore than he could have killed Regulus.
He returned home, to an empty bed, to cold sheets, and he cried for the love that he'd lost.
