"What can she do?"
Harry and Hermione were at the dining room table, both with a cup of hot coffee in from of them. Harry was absentmindedly playing with his spoon, his eyes looking from time to time at the piece of parchment laying in from of him.
"She can ask for James' total custody. She can refuse to divorce. She can argue that I was the one who screwed up. She can do whatever she wants at this point."
"You didn't screw up…"
"We sleep together, Hermione," he sighed.
Hermione closed her eyes for a second, trying to forget that Harry didn't say that they were a couple, but that they just "slept" together.
"She doesn't have to know that. I mean… I'm sure that she will come back soon, and as far as I know, I guess that you will have to live with her for a while… At least, that is what Susan said. Did she say anything about it recently?"
It almost broke her heart to think about what was about to happen in the next few weeks. And even if she was sure about her feelings about Harry, she wasn't really sure that he wasn't into her just because she was here, contrary to Ginny. Knowing that he would spend probably more than just a couple of days with his wife made her think about the instability of their relationship. She was the other woman after all, and she couldn't ask for more at the moment.
"Not really," Harry answered. "But we are in December, and it is almost the break for Quidditch training. Ginny was supposed to spend at least three weeks here from the 15th of December anyway."
"Alright. I guess that you two can use this time together to think about the divorce."
"I don't have to think about it," he snapped.
"You have to do what is best for James," Hermione retorted. "And I don't think that seeing his parents fight each other is a good thing."
"She decided to leave!"
"She just wanted to have a career, Harry, you know that."
"And is it my fucking fault?!"
Harry suddenly got up from the table, making his cup of coffee falling on the wooden floor. He buried his hand in his wild mane of hair, and cursed through clenched teeth.
"I'm sorry…," he eventually said while taking his wand to clear his mess.
"You can't just blame her for everything, it's the only thing that I'm saying," Hermione continued, remaining calm despite what had just happened.
"And what solution do you have? Are you saying that I have to stay with her, to cope with the situation for James' sake?"
"I'm not saying that…," she muttered, before taking her head into her hands. "Gods, I don't know what to do, you can't ask me to give you my opinion about all this situation since I'm a stakeholder here."
Harry sighed and urged her to get up before taking her into his arms.
"I'm sorry," he repeated in a murmur, his lips on her forehead. "I want things to be different, and I'm sorry for putting you in such a situation, Hermione…"
"I decided to be in this situation too, don't forget that… I guess that it's my sentence for being in love with a married man…"
She tried to laugh, but inwardly, she was ashamed of herself. Ashamed of being in the middle of this fight, ashamed of being into Harry's embrace without being legitimate to do it. Harry kissed her nose, before caressing her check.
"I love you. And don't you dare think that it's the end between you and me just because I will surely have to live with Ginny for a few weeks. My feelings for you are real, and will remain the same."
"Alright," Hermione muttered. "I trust you, Harry James Potter."
Ginny Weasley-Potter was packing up her things when someone knocked at the door of the dormitory.
"Come in," she said loudly, while folding up her shirts.
"Ready to leave already?," Jane asked with amusement in her voice, before sitting on Ginny's bed.
Jane was one of her coteam member, and one of the best Quidditch keeper of the team.
"More than ready," the redhead mumbled, not really paying attention to the young brunette.
"You seem really happy to go back home, indeed," Jane said ironically, before taking James' photograph near Ginny's bed. "Your little boy is cute."
"It's not the first time that you see him."
"No, of course," Jane retorted, an eyebrow raised. "Is something wrong, Ginny? You seem… preoccupied."
With a sigh, the young woman let go of the shirt that was in her hands and sat down on the bed near Jane.
"Things aren't really… easy between Harry and I."
Jane frowned. It was the first time in months that Ginny was talking about Harry Potter, her husband. Even during their first weeks at the training camp, the redhead woman was avoiding the subject, always saying that things were perfectly fine between them and that Harry was really proud of her decision to leave in order to have a career.
"How bad is it?"
"Really bad. He wants to divorce," she continued in a murmur, her head bend down.
"What? Wow, that was unexpected."
"Not to me," Ginny chuckled sarcastically. "He told me when I came back home in August…"
"That's the reason why you didn't go back home sooner?"
"Yes…"
"But… James? You didn't see him during all this time because you didn't want to face your husband?"
"Please, don't lecture me now. I just wanted to focus on my Quidditch training, it was helping me to focus on something, in order not to think about what was wrong in my life."
"Alright," Jane answered, still not convinced by Ginny's answer. "But why are you going home now?"
"He sent me the divorce papers. Or should I say that his lawyer sent them to me," Ginny laughed hollowly. "It's official I guess."
"But it's not that easy to divorce in the Wizarding world…"
"I know. We have to live with each other at least a month to decide whether or not we really want to put an end to our relationship, for the sake of our son."
"And it doesn't seem to enchant you…"
"Well, to say the least… I don't know what to do to be honest. All of this is happening because he didn't appreciate the fact that I left in June to become a Quidditch player. I just want to make his life a living hell, just to make him pay."
"Mmh, I don't know if it's a good idea," Jane said back. "My aunt lived the same thing two years ago, and she eventually ended with half her husband fortune and their children custody in less than a year."
"How did she do that?," Ginny asked, frowning.
Jane smiled at her. "Oh, she didn't make him pay. Let's just say that she said everything that he wanted to hear, that she did everything that he wanted to see during a month. She was a caring wife, she showed him how in love with him she was, how a good mother she could be. It worked very well."
"But I did all these things in the past, and he didn't realize that," Ginny mumbled.
"Oh yeah, but men can't see these kind of things sometimes. But trust me: right now is the good moment. Imagine: you will be with Harry and James alone during four weeks; four weeks during which you can show him that you've changed for the best. He thinks that you're a selfish bitch? Show him how wrong he is. You need to make him realize that you're the woman that he needs and the mother that James needs. Trust me, it's the only way to make things work out for you. Harry Potter is famous, too famous for your own good. He can destroy you and your career in a heartbeat if he wants."
Ginny remained silent, weighting the pros and cons of Jane's words. She wasn't wrong; Harry was a sensible man, and showing him that she was a caring and lovely wife could change everything. Maybe that she could win him back, maybe that she could make him change his mind about her Quidditch career… Maybe that they could still be a family after all… At least, if it didn't work, she could always show to the Ministry that she had done everything right and that Harry was the one who destroyed everything between them.
"You're brilliant, Jane… Truly brilliant," Ginny conceded with a bright smile before hugging her.
"Well, if things work out for you, don't forget to put in a good work to the coach for me, please," she chuckled.
That night, Ginny slept well. Things weren't as bad as she had thought, after all.
Well, despite the oh-so nice words of Penny, I decided to continue "this farce". I hope that everyone else is enjoying this story though... Have a nice day, and thank you for reading me!
