Rain Falls (So Do Tears)
It was cold.
So cold.
Freezing even.
The weather was particularly harsh, to say that it was barely November.
Sirius shivered violently, as he stared up at the house. He'd spent so many days and nights in that house, so much time, so much laughter, so much love.
How could it all be gone?
He didn't understand how any of it had happened. Had Peter been coerced? Had he been forced? Tortured? Threatened?
Sirius didn't really know. What he did know was that this was his fault. He'd caused this because he'd been the one to suggest Peter as the secret keeper.
He'd believed the best in his friend hoping that it would save lives.
A startling splash hit the bare skin of his arm and Sirius looked up to see rain beginning to fall. It was icy rain, and each drop that hit him made him flinch.
He looked back at the house.
Had James fought? Sirius had to believe he had, because he knew his best friend. James would have done anything to protect Lily and Harry.
Had Lily cried? Had she begged and pleaded? Had she fought too?
Sirius knew that Harry was okay, he'd seen Hagrid a few hours ago, but Lily and James…
Sirius couldn't believe it.
He knew what he had to do of course. He had to find Peter, find him and demand answers. Had Peter really been a spy?
Sirius couldn't believe that either.
What could drive him to betray them so fully and so ruthlessly?
Sirius shook his head. The rain was getting heavier, and he couldn't help but wish he'd put a robe on before he'd come over. He turned away, unable to look at the destruction any longer.
It wasn't the home that Sirius remembered now, not now that Lily and James were gone.
Not now that his godson was off to be looked after by strangers.
After he dealt with Peter, Sirius would go and see Dumbledore. He was Harry's Godfather, surely that meant he had rights.
His eyes fell on the graveyard across the way and Sirius stumbled. James and Lily would be laid to rest in there.
Sirius swallowed hard before he continued on his way.
He didn't realise it when his tears started mingling with the rain.
