'I'm confused.'
She watched Gordon frown, just about keeping his frustration in check before looking back to the small image of Brains sat in her palm.
'Okay, let me simplify. Eos has a sister.'
'I got that,' he snapped, folding his arms.
'And she, to get back at Eos—'
'Convinced John to kill Virgil, I know. I'm not stupid.'
'Gordon,' she soothed, running her hand over his leg before turning to Brains. 'What we don't understand is how she convinced John to do this.'
'It looks like she played off an untreated condition. I've been, uh, looking through his journal, and it seemed like he was suffering from psychosis or something similar, maybe depersonalisation? It's hard to say, it isn't really my area, but—'
'Brains!' He and she jumped at Gordon's outburst. The young Tracy shut his eyes and took a deep breath, slowly letting it escape before looking at him. 'Please…'
'Sorry, Gordon.' He was quiet, the unexpected scolding having hit him hard. 'John wasn't, uh, well, and this "Naunet" knew that somehow. She played on it.'
'How did she know?' Penny asked, leaving Gordon to sit quietly, inspecting his hands as he thought. 'How could she? No one else knew. Did they?'
'Eos could have told her?' He looked up from his fingers to Brains. 'Could she have been in on this?'
'I… I don't think so, she seems quite distressed over all of this.'
'But she could have?'
'Yes. She could have, but I don't think she was.'
'Find out what you can from her. Find out if she knew about John.' He stood, leaving Penny to look up at him.
'And what are you going to do?' she asked, the concern just barely being kept from her voice. She was worried about him—he was slipping out of control. She dreaded to think what he would do to whoever was behind all of this; at least he wouldn't kill John if he had been played. That didn't, however, mean he wouldn't beat the poor man to a pulp.
'I'm going to talk to Kayo.'
