Chapter 41: Unexpected Intervention

Krillin knew the instant his attack missed he was dead; he could only hope the monster would be quick about it.

Just as Cold crossed the last few feet towards Krillin the world around them exploded with an ear shattering sonic boom.

Krillin hesitantly opened his eyes to see Piccolo standing in front of him where he expected to see Cold. The Namekian warrior was facing away from them, his arms crossed in contempt as he looked down. "I'm going to have to ask you to stay away from my students." His voice filled with a surprising confidence.

Krillin's eyes followed Piccolo's to see the partially buried form of King Cold beneath Piccolo's feet.

'Did he really manage to intercept him?' Krillin thought to himself unsure what to make of the bizarre scene.

King Cold was shaking with fury, any and all signs of the calm, calculating ruler were now gone as without a single word Cold unleashed a massive wave of energy in all directions.

Piccolo jumped into the air and crossed his hands in front of his face as the shock wave washed over him.

The 4 human warriors were left to be carried away by the tidal wave of energy.

No sooner had Piccolo uncrossed his arms had Cold already gone on the offensive with a powerful knee to Piccolo abdomen causing a spray of spittle to fly from the Namekian's mouth.

"I'm...tired...of...you...pests!" Cold shouted as he began to pound away at the entirely defensive Piccolo, each blow revealing more of Cold's full power than the last.

'This power...it's worse than I imagined.' Piccolo thought to himself as he frantically whipped his arms back and forth straining to sustain just the base Kaioken and keep ahead of a seemingly endless string of wild blows raining down on him.

Finally his Kaioken faltered and with it his guard, he was simply unable to keep up with the assault, his jaw bone threatened to snap under the power of the first strike, the second strike shattered one of his ribs, and the third blow sent the Namekian warrior spinning away at break-neck speeds.

Piccolo spiraled backwards landing on all fours for a moment trying to catch his breath and prepare to try to go on the offensive. '30 seconds, that's all I've got...' The Namekian warrior surmised as Cold methodically made his way over to him, trying to regain at least a small part of his composure.

"I'm surprised you survived that, let alone blocked some of my attacks at this level, your display has left me a bit curious why you didn't use this power to vanquish my son? Or me during our prior engagement." Cold asked as he wiped some of the blood that had spilled forth while speaking. His demeanor was more controlled than it had been before he had been able to vent some frustration on Piccolo.

"You'll find the people of this planet full of surprises." Piccolo responded as he too wiped the blood from the corner of his lip, "Like this!" He shouted as he vanished, the glow from his red aura hovering momentarily where he had been for just a second.

King Cold's eyes quickly scanned the surrounding terrain, looking for any sign of the surprisingly fast Green warrior, before he could locate him though Piccolo's fist slammed into his cheek, followed quickly by a knee to his already broken rib.

King Cold wrapped an arm protectively around his wound as waves of agony washed through his now airborne body.

This was the moment Piccolo was waiting for, his chance to finish this nightmare of a threat once and for all. Forcing himself to sustain his Kaioken just a few seconds longer Piccolo appeared behind the slow to recover Frost Demon and unleashed a vicious double handed ax-handed to the center of Cold's back.

The emperor of the galaxy couldn't help but let out a yell of agony as his already broken rib snapped free and punctured one of his lungs.

"Masenko-HA!" Piccolo shouted as he unleashed a massive wave of energy at the rapidly receding Frost Demon.

Cold heard the attack shouted, but there was no time to dodge, he could barely bear to unwrap his arm from his ribs as the pain continued to radiate throughout his entire torso. Every breath was pure agony.

Piccolo watched the Frost Demon vanish inside the wave of energy and felt a feeling of true satisfaction. He had done it, had had actually managed to defeat the strongest fighter in the universe, a beast that had crushed Goku, and the recently ascended Vegeta. All the time languishing in their shadows of others, the humiliating defeat against Goku, his death at the hands of the Saiyans, his defeat at the hands of Frieza all could've been avoided if only he had been whole to begin with. Piccolo began to laugh, loudly at his own foolishness, his ignorant hesitation; he had never felt more alive than he did at that moment.

"Care to fill me in on what's so funny?" A cold voice trembling with rage snarled from inside the still disappearing debris cloud.

Piccolo felt a chill run down his spine. "Im-impossible, that attack should've vaporized you." Piccolo stuttered back as Cold floated from the cloud a sphere of pure, red energy surrounding him.

Piccolo's entire body froze, his mind trying to come to terms with the power he felt billowing off of the enraged Frost Demon, it was worse than he thought imaginable.

"Oh, are you all done now? Done with your delusions of grandeur? No more tricks you'd like to try?" Cold's voice was as if it was on the last strings of sanity watching the stunned silent Piccolo floated limply above him.

Piccolo was speechless, to match the sort of output he felt from the Frost Demon he would need to go at least to Kaioken times 4, but for some reason he and Kami's souls hadn't fully fused yet, he could hardly sustain just the basic Kaioken. Every scenario that played out in his mind ended the same way, his own death.

"Well if you're done playing around, I can assure you I am too." He managed as a dark aura surrounded him, his power rising to even higher heights.

Before Piccolo even had a chance to move Cold had already charged up an attack, strong enough to completely atomize him two times over, and launched it.

Piccolo's eyes widened before he vanished in the blast. Debris raining down all around the newest crater, as magma began to seep through the bottom of it.

"There that's better, one pest down." Cold mumbled to himself before turning back to finish the job. What he saw made the Frost Demon's blood begin to boil. "How?" He shouted staring at the bloodied Super Saiyan Goku standing next to a still shocked Piccolo.

When no immediate response was given Cold snapped "Enough!" He shouted, the veins bulging from his forehead, a single finger extended above his forehead, an already massive ball of energy similar to Frieza's death ball floated above his head. "I've had enough. I don't care about this planet or its secrets! I just want you all to die!"

"Piccolo, we've got to stop him!" Goku shouted as he cupped his hands ready for his final desperate struggle, his eyes still mostly closed from the blood covering his face.

Piccolo just snarled in frustration as he used Kaioken and prepared his own attack.

"No way...he's going to destroy the planet!" Yamcha called his eyes wide with terror.

"No he's not! I don't have time to die!" Chi Chi shouted before blasting off towards her husband's side.

Tien solemnly followed her as well grimly determined to go down fighting.

"We don't really have a choice..." Krillin mumbled to himself before joining them and charging up his own attack.

Yamcha finally pushed his panic aside and joined the others, preparing the Earth's last stand.

Goku gave each of his friends a nod as they joined his last defiance.

Finally the last warrior still capable of helping their efforts arrived, Vegeta could hardly move, his golden aura supported by nothing more than his own determination was a mere shadow of what it once was. It was so weak it appeared it could flicker out completely at any second.

Goku gave Vegeta a silent nod as he focused even more of his waning strength into his final attack.

A grim nod was all the Earth raised Saiyan received in return.

Inside the Saiyan Prince Pride felt the oppressive weight of his fear, the power he felt radiating from Cold was nearly unimaginable. The only way he had any chance of surviving was to swallow his pride and try to combine his strength with the Earthlings and hope it was enough.

"Yes fly towards the light you fools!" Cold shouted, his voice shaking with a mad rage as he unleashed his attack, a ball of destruction. "Now die!"

A cornucopia of shouts followed as each of the warriors unleashed their best attacks, 4 Kamehameha waves merged together with a tri-beam, a Masenko, and a Galick Gun. Together the attacks mixed into the greatest tornado of death the Earth had ever seen.

The entire planet began to shake the instant the two blasts met. Unfortunately for the defenders of Earth, despite the impressive display, even their combined might, exhausted as they were, could only slow their coming deaths down.

The weaker human fighters, who were barely pulling themselves from the rubble left over from their own life and death struggle, stood in awe for a moment as the almost rainbow colored pillar of energy slowly lost its fight against the gargantuan sphere of destruction heading for the Earth.

After the shock passed through them they realized it was time for action. Quickly all of the survivors rushed forward adding everything they had left to the desperate attempt to save their home.

Cold's attack slowed ever so slightly for a moment before re-beginning its inevitable crawl towards the surface once more.

"Damn it!" Piccolo shouted as his stamina began to wane.

'No...It can't end like this!' Vegeta thought as his grit his teeth trying to push the last of his strength outwards.

'I...I can't fail Chi Chi again...I'm going to have to-' Goku thought as the corners if the sky he could still see suddenly turned red as, unbeknownst to the warriors; three massive red beams expectantly began to rain down on King Cold from three separate directions. Each one large enough that only someone on par with a Super Saiyan could hope to sustain the attacks.

Cold growled in frustration as his muscles began to actually burn for the first time this entire fight, sustaining his shield at a high enough level to stop the latest ambush, and keep his own massive attack from being launched back at him was too much even for him.

Goku couldn't believe what he was seeing, whoever was helping them against Cold was actually making a difference, already Cold's attack had come to a complete stopped its advance "Guys! It's now or never put everything you have into this last go!" He shouted as he forced every last bit of strength he had left out in one massive push. All around him the other fighters followed his lead, pumping their strength, and in some cases even part of their life force out in one final push. Slowly the Death ball began to give way under the incredible pressure.

"Noooo!" Cold shouted as he broke his concentration from his main attack long enough fired 3 death beams back at the sources of the relentless assault.

Within a few seconds all three had stopped firing leaving Cold free to focus on the task at hand once more. All of the gains the Earthlings had made vanished in an instant as Cold threw his full might down at them once more.

Slowly the weaker humans collapsed to the ground, their energies completely drained.

"Finally! Finally DIE!" Cold shouted ignoring the pain from his broken rib as his attack crossed the last few feet towards the Earth's defenders.

'No! I failed...I should've teleported Cold to the sun when I had a chance!' Goku mentally shouted as the blast filled his vision completely, its heat threatening to burn him alive.

Cold could hear the screams of terror from those about to be vaporized by his might and felt a warm feeling in his heart, this moment was the kind of moment he had waited decades to feel again. As much pain as he was in, the fact he was finally getting to kill not only 3 actual threats to his dynasty but also being able to crush all of the other pests who had tormented him made him remember the feeling of true joy.

Goku felt the searing heat of the attack close in, any second now he would be forced to hear the screams of his wife and his friends as they were slowly vaporized by the attack that would spell the end not just of their lives but of their entire planet.

Everything seemed to come to a standstill in that instant. He and the other defenders of Earth continued to push against the attack but nothing happened, it was as if time had stopped to give each of them a chance to reflect on their own failures that had lead them to this moment.

Goku saw his son's crying face in the blue plasma of his attack floating inches away from his face; he heard Chi Chi's dying whispers on Namek in the roar of the waterfalls of energy colliding around him. Every muscle in his body was taut and burning begging for it all to stop, for the relief of death to finally take him. But he knew it wouldn't stop even in death he couldn't make the sights and sounds stop. He couldn't fail again not when he knew he would have eternity to relive this moment and his other failures over and over again.

He pushed with all of his might expecting everything to fall inwards that very instant his power gave out instead something unexpected happened, Cold's attack began to recede once more.

Cold willed his attack forward the last few yards would be crossed in an instant and then the fireworks could begin.

Before the Emperor of the Galaxy could finish his victory though, he found himself suddenly, violently forced downward towards his own attack, his back and his tail feeling as if they were on fire.

Videl, who had finally looked away from where her father's charred body still lay several hundred feet away, suddenly noticed three strange lights glowing in the distance. Before her very eyes the attacks, a few hundred feet from the massive beam struggle she had somehow not noticed till now, merged into a third truly massive sphere of energy causing her still tear filled eyes to widen in a mixture of childlike wonder and instinctual fear.

Just as the beam struggle was about to be decided the attack was launched. Her mouth fell agape at the incredible array of colors that filled the sky the moment the attack found its target. The red of the newborn super attack mixed with the orange of the massive sphere, and the blue, gold, and purple in the nearly extinguished beam near the Earth's surface, in that instant it seemed as if every color that had ever existed was present and a few more that had never had before were born.

Cold's screams of agony echoed across the valley as he suddenly found himself trapped in the worst possible situation, below him was not only a combined attack that if detonated could unleash tremendous damage to him but also a large volume of his own strength. Sandwiching him from above was a massive attack nearly as dangerous as the one that lurked below. To make matters worse whoever had been pushing from above suddenly ceased the pressure allowing the entire attack to rocket upwards at reality defying speeds as Cold was forced to use all of his remaining strength to keep his body intact.

Goku and the few other resurgent defenders of Earth made their final push count as the attack left the Earth's atmosphere faster than Bulma's satellite cameras could hope to follow, even taking one of the unlucky machines with it on its way towards the edges of the solar system.

The state of stability was not meant to last though as no sooner had the attack's distance surpassed its blast distance did the upper portion of the attack detonate igniting the other two blasts in an instant.

The collapsed, ragged victors weakly attempted to block their eyes as the sun was magnificently overshadowed by the triple detonation in the sky.

Slowly the light faded, and with it a sense of indescribable joy, mixed with utter disbelief rushed through the group, though all present were too tired to do more than quietly laugh, or in some cases cry, to themselves as their bodies tried rushed to repair their many injuries.

"Anyone...see...what happened...to Cold?" Goku wheezed lying flat on his back.

"Not...a...clue...just glad... he... finally...died." Piccolo responded a short distance away similarly sprawled out.

No one else spoke; most of the others had finally given into the sweet call of unconsciousness the instant it seemed the battle was over.

Several minutes passed and the battlefield was still, before two figures, the only two left capable of moving, made their way down to the center if the chaos.

"Oh my gosh, guys that was crazy! Are you alright?" Bulma asked frantically as Videl lowered her the last few feet to the ground, her mind frantically trying to decide who was most desperately in need of medical attention.

"King Furry we need every medevac vehicle you can spar here now." She said thru her recently designed communication earring as she set about trying to make a sling for the barely conscious Vegeta's shattered arm.

"Wait Miss Bulma who's that?" Videl suddenly asked pointing to the sky.

The Blue-haired heiress turned around just in time to see a wave of green landing and dispersing throughout the battlefield. Namekians young and old hurrying to help those who had fought so bravely. Leading the way were none other than the Earth's new guardian and his brother who immediately rushed to begin healing the worst of the injuries.

Within an hour the only two figures on the ground unable to stand were the two Namekian children, who were each panting from the exertion of healing all those with serious injuries. The rest of those whose injuries weren't as life threatening were taken by the emergency vehicles who begun airlifting them to the nearby hospitals.

As the group begun to thin the patience of a certain Saiyan Prince began to wane. "Kakarot, it is time for us to setting this once and for all!" Vegeta suddenly shouted interrupting Goku's nearly hour long apology and reunion with his wife.

Goku turned to the Saiyan Prince a look of bewilderment on his face. "Settle what?" He asked confused.

"Don't play dumb you fool. You stole my destiny to be the first Super Saiyan. So now we must fight to decide which of us is truly the strongest in the universe!" Vegeta declared his eyes flashing teal as his body prepared to transform.

"Back off Vegeta, if anyone is having a rematch with Goku it's me. I've waited far longer and unlike you I didn't almost get us all killed." The Namekian said as he popped his neck to each side.

"Guys I'd love a rematch with you both but right now-" Goku started to say as he prepared to make a hasty getaway and continue the search for his son when Vegeta cut him off.

"No I have waited too long; you can find your son after I have my honor restored." Vegeta snarled as he flash his now golden aura around himself.

"Wait!" A sudden unfamiliar voice shouted as an energy signature easily as large as Tien's, spike into existence.

Everyone turned to the source of the voice as a young woman with chestnut colored hair in what appeared to be Earth Defense Force combat gear landed near the center of the gathering.

"Stay out if this human-" Vegeta started to say before being cut off.

"No I won't stay out if this until I've completed my mission!" She yelled defiantly before dropping her voice to one of almost defeat as she looked to the ground seemingly fighting back tears. "At least the parts I still can."

Everyone was stunned silent for a moment, not even Vegeta could speak. All eyes turned to the Saiyan Prince to see how he would react but Vegeta was too shocked at the outburst to even speak.

"Uh...ok what did you come to do?" Goku finally asked the question on everyone's mind at the moment.

"Also why are you in EDF fatigues, I know every fighter trained to use Ki in the force and with as strong as you are you definitely had formal training." Meditrain added once the silence was broken but before the girl had a chance to respond.

The young woman's spine straightened instantly at seeing Meditrain and the other surviving members of the Blue Force, her hand rushing to a sloppy, nervous salute, not unlike that of a raw recruit.

"At ease, just answer our questions." Major Meditrain responded on reflex surprised by the woman's sudden behavior after standing up to Vegeta.

"Sorry sir, I'll explain everything." She said before clearing her throat. "I am Honorary-private Lime Lao." Lime paused for a moment seemingly in deep thought. "Ok I don't really know how much I am supposed to tell you or how it will affect where I'm from so here we go. I'm from the future."

Glad you enjoyed it, yeah Vegeta did alright for fighting on his own, but he was sorta the makn reason Goku got whooped lol. He and Goku could've done better if they had worked together.

Good call on Piccolo and Kami's fusion not being nearly as strong as canon due to the lack of the 3 years of training.

Vegeta is such a big big shithead seriously, can't he for once work as a proper team or so
Well anyways this fusion should be much stronger than the canon one even though piccolo right is weaker than canon's 3 years trained piccolo because this one knows the kaioken so kold I think will have more of a challenge than he could handle considering that even without kaioken kamicolo will be at least as powerful as a ssj if not more and he can use kaioken to 5 times at least(seeing as kami and picollo were one and the same originally I don't think remerging would make him triply souled since he is going back to his original form)

I take it from your reaction I captured Vegeta's personality pretty well lol :). fused Piccolo right now is stronger than his canon counterpart would've been in the same situation but that doesn't mean he is stronger than his counterpart with the 3 years of training. Piccolo and Kami are so different in alot of ways right now that their souls aren't that easy to mix, easier than Piccolo's and Nail's were but not perfect and it will take time (maybe even years) for them to settle down, time was something they unfortunately did not have right now. If that makes sense.

Guest- Ah Vegeta being an idiot like always. Kamiccolo is significantly weaker than in the anime because he didn't have the 3 years of training right but Kami went to King Kai's to train. That's not gonna make up for The 3 years but it should help a little.

It seems I captured the Prince of all Saiyan's personality pretty well this chapter :).

It the potential unlock and Kami running some on snake way definitely helped some but you are right it doesn't make up for 3 lost years of training. With Kaioken though Piccolo is the undisputed strongest fighter currently on planet Earth.

Simgr101- well this is good and bad at the same time. since gero is spying on all of this that already means androids 17 and 18 are going to be above kamiccolo level now. since trunks hasn't showed up yet i can only imagine this will be the future timeline and youll have someone go back in time to this point

Good to hear from you, I was hoping I hadn't lost you :). Piccolo is weaker than he would be come the andriod saga but yes Gero sees all, at least when it comes to those he wants to kill. As for your last point, that was a very interesting guess, I actually hadn't thought to do that but that could make for a very interesting story. I hope you enjoyed the twist I did leave for everyone at the end.

Looks like Goku, Nappa, and Vegeta are going to get a nice zenkai after this, assuming they don't bleed out and die at this point. Nothing like being curb-stomped to raise a saiyan's power to new heights, or does the fact that Vegeta and Goku are super mean that they don't get zenkai boosts anymore? In cannon, zenkai doesn't seem to occur after the saiyans all ascend. I think, not sure.

Ah the 'Destructo Disc' style of attack. The great equalizer of the DBZ universe, or at least it would be if anyone could ever hit anything with it. It's kind of like the first guns in the real world. Unbelievably deadly, but good luck hitting what you're aiming at. If Krillin could figure out a way to make his signature move faster or maybe track, he would be a serious threat regardless of relative power levels.

I couldn't quite tell whether you had Cargo or Dende accept ownership of the dragon balls. Was Cargo nodding while stepping forward, or nodding to Dende who was stepping forward? I think Cargo would be a great choice. Since he wasn't developed in cannon, you would have full control over his personality.

I appreciate the effort you put in to responding to reviews, I notice I'm more eager to review when the author responds. Hope you have a great vacation, looking forward to what comes next.

Zenkais will continue but their relevance will drop as the boost they get only affects the base form and will not be continuing the exponential growth seen earlier once the Super Saiyan state is unlocked. But yes all 3 will be receiving a nice zenkai :)

Yeah you hit the nail on the head about the destructo disk. If only they could learn to use it more effectively it could do some major damage.

I'm sorry the new guardian section wasn't clear, Dende became the guardian of Earth. Cargo doesn't have a huge role left in the story but he will still appear from time to time.

and again Power Levels are bullshit exact number are pointless and should be dropped after frieza

although since Bulma is now that Bulma has gone Super Genius maybe she can make a scouter that can read those insane higher power levels. Although since people are ALWAYS holding back they're basically pointless any.

I know that you believe I have Cold over powered in this story, but it does have a role to play so I hope you enjoyed the fight the way it played out anyway.

I don't try to give exact numbers in the power level lists more relative figures so people have an idea how everyone stacks up. I at least always enjoy seeing them in stories.

Super Bulma has a lot of interesting inventions up her sleeves before Dr. Gero strikes again, to bring the super powered heros into the lives of the everyday citizen.

I've always wanted to see one where Raditz and Nappa both survive into the Namek saga and beyond. The fact that that yours is one that exists and is written well is fantastic! i must begin by tell you I love this story. even though it sometimes feels like the whole point of story is to keeping gohan away from his parents.

how I wish vegeta would have found this band of saiyans with nappa. I don't like nappa thought but I find him tolerable in this fic.

There is a little evidence of bulma/vegeta... I mean where is Mirai Trunks. will he be coming soon ... I know Gero will make androids coz he had made androids before (in the previous chapters)

i must also compliment you not development of all the fighter characters that dbz seemed to have ignored, like chichi. you made humans more powerful i.e. in the story until the namik arc our race was in the game where as in the series humans never really had a chance.

Thanks for the review! A writer always likes to hear their work is enjoyed by others :). Keeping Gohan away from his parents is the ripple that started this story but it is all leading up to a very important point after the reunion.

Goku is trying desperately to find his son, it is the first real failure he has had in his life and it is weighing on him to some degree, but you are right in the show he did take his family for granted.

Raditz's character is a very interesting one, his life up this point has been completely focused on his own survival in a sea of things much stronger than himself. If he didn't at least have his wits he would've died long ago. Raditz is filling sort of the father role for Gohan right now (even though he is the reason he doesn't have a father) and his and Gohan's relationship is a complicated one. As much as they need each other, Gohan still knows that Raditz is at least part of the reason his parents are 'dead'. Turles will also have a strong influence on Gohan going forward. I'm glad you enjoyed the cousin part, I was trying to rationalize one of the plot holes that seem to spring up randomly in the show and between the show and the movies to make use of a intriguing character :).

That would be a fun group, the Prince of all Saiyans would finally have a race to lead. Nappa has an important role to fill in this story so I am glad i've made him at least an ok character :).

Dr. Gero is a busy bee working on his andriods for sure, as for what's coming from the future, I'm sure no one was expecting that twist at the end lol.

I personally really didn't like when DBZ dropped alot of my favorite characters to the role of comic relief at best so I am definitely trying to avoid those issues in this story without going too far the other way. It is a fine line to walk it feels like when I am writing so I am glad it seems I am doing an ok job so far :).

Cjbeast3000- Please tell me Vegeta and Bulma is a thing bc of Trunks even though in this story Vegeta would be getting sloppy seconds ;). Also do you think Bulma and Yamcha in canon ever did it. They were around age.

Thanks for the review :). As for the first part of your review, I cannot say anything except next chapter will be of interest to you. For the second part I think they did, I have to evidence to really back it up but I just have a feeling they did.

Short chapter but still impressive. That fact your giving'em a challenge is awesome! Depending on Goku each and every time gets tiring and becomes too expected.

Referring to the chapter title of a few chapters back right? If so then yes family bonds will be important in this story, especially for characters like Gohan.

Glad you enjoyed it I was afraid there might not have been enough material to really count as a chapter since it was just half of what I was hoping was going to be a very impressive chapter. A bit more than a challenge lol, this is all they could've asked for and more :) Yeah I don't plan on Goku getting all of the kills in this story lol.
