~Gio: Joker~
I wake up in the middle of that night. Atty's been on watch for a while now, I guess I should get up and give him a break. He's done so much for us already, after all.
When I glance over, Ori is curled up in a ball, breathing quietly and peacefully. Atty rolls over with a small snore, looking peaceful. Alright, that'd be fine and dandy except for the fact that Atticus is supposed to be on watch what the hell does he think he's doing!?
"Atty!" I shout-whisper, "Atty!" I try to wake him up without bothering Ori.
He rolls over, snorting a bit. I sigh.
I guess I'll just yell at him for sleeping while on watch without waking us up in the morning.
Meanwhile, I sit up and stretch, ready to keep watch of my allies. The breeze is cool in the humid, muggy night. It feels nice. Suddenly I hear a rustle in the bushes and immediately get up to check behind it. I make my typical circle around our alliance and find, believe it or not, nothing. I make a couple more circles before I trip over my own feet and go falling to the merciless, sandy ground, screaming.
I hate sand. I hate sand. Like fucking shit I hate sand! It gets everywhere, in all my clothes, and just when you think you got rid of it, you realize that you never get rid of sand. It stays with you until you die, literally because we are kind of in a fight to the death. I won't be surprised if there's sand in my casket.
I hit the bushes and groan. Ori sits up. "Are you okay!?" he asks in a concerned whisper, looking over at me. I sit up, brushing the leaves out of my hair. "Fine," I say quietly. Atty seems to stir slightly, but calms back down again.
"Want to take a break? I'll take watch."
"No, it's fine." Ori holds a hand down to me and I take it, him helping me up. He guides me back over to where Atty sleeps. We take a seat.
"I'm not tired," he says quietly. "Want some company?"
"Uh, sure." I look around, wanting to make another round, just to make sure. I get up, but Ori takes my wrists. "Gio… It's fine."
"Just one more lap. Just in case." He releases me and I make another round, and again I find no danger.
"Come sit down now," Ori says. "Try to get some sleep."
I do as he says, but feel restless. "Ori…"
He looks over. "Hm?"
"Don't you think… There's something about Atty?"
"Huh?" He looks unsure whether he should be defensive of his friend or interested.
"I mean, something… Supernatural."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, he's strong, and he can do physical burdens with ease. And his eyes, Ori. They're so bright they practically glow in the dark, haven't you noticed that?"
"Yeah, I get what you mean."
"It's something supernatural, superhuman. And he's so damn secretive all the time and mysterious. He doesn't tell us anything about his family and friends. He's so protective of his personal issues, and it seems he's always on-guard of that stuff."
"Yeah, true…"
"I think I know why, Ori."
"Why?"
"I mean, he's so damn hairy and all. With the eyes and the physical ability he has… Our ally isn't human, Ori, or he isn't entirely human." He still looks a little bit confused.
I lower my voice to a tiny, quiet whisper. "He's a werewolf."
Ori's eyes widen.
Suddenly I get nervous.
See, I've been an avid believer in the supernatural since I was young. I don't think that any kind of aliens live among us, but there's definitely a possibility they exist. I'm a believer in magic, faeries (somewhere, even if they're not visible to humans), ghosts (that live among us. Some are peaceful and even nurturing, but some are angry), and especially guardian angels. I love to look at the sky. I believe in the universe being infinite, stretching expansively into space. I believe that there might be life somewhere else out there, sure. I believe in the supernatural aspect of nature, of the magic charm of the woods and whatever inhabits it.
It's really deep and complicated, but I've had a lot of time to think about things like that. My nights are spent alone, lying under the stars without a roof over my head. It makes you more open-minded, that's for sure.
I never really thought about the possibility of werewolves in the world out there, though. But now I whole-heartedly believe in them. Atticus Hollow is a werewolf. It explains everything about him perfectly! All his odd habits, all his secrecy, the reason he's so knowledgeable and physically strong.
People always used to haze me for believing in something so vast and expansive, for believing in things that people see in fairytales and children's stories of imagination, only works of fiction, or so they think. Who knows what's hiding where humans don't know or can't see? I've gotten teased and even called crazy so much for believing in the mysterious, the supernatural. It was just one of the many, many things they liked to make fun of me for.
I'm suddenly alarmed that Ori will think less of my sanity and my ability to be an ally because of this.
He looks at me and I look back at him for a long time.
"…Of course…" he whispers, looking at Atty. "That explains everything…" Atty rolls over again and snores. "That also explains why he's so loyal."
I giggle quietly a little bit. It's definitely true. "We have to protect it from the others. He has to know that we don't think of him as a monster. He's gained our trust, and we can't let this ruin our friendship. We have to protect him from people that might attack him out of fear."
"Right." Ori looks determined, and it's really adorable. "We're going to be good friends to Atty, even though he's a werewolf."
I look up at the moon. It's not quite full, but based on the cycle it's very possible that we'll all see a full moon here. "I wonder if a werewolf will transform under a fake moon." After all, as expansive as it looks, this sky isn't real, nor are the stars, nor is the moon.
"I don't know," Ori says. "Maybe. I guess we'll see." We both glance over at him. He's a pretty ugly sleeper, really. If you could call Atticus Hollow ugly, that is.
"You can go to sleep," I whisper. "I still have forty-seven laps to go."
"Are you sure, Gio? I can stay awake."
"I'm sure." I yawn loudly, feeling tired. No, I have to do more laps… I have to…
"Go to sleep," he says. "That's a command."
I stretch, trying not to yawn again and failing. "Fine," I grumble. I don't actually feel that mad or anything. I curl up on the ground and close my eyes. Sleep comes quickly.
.
I wake up that morning to a quiet Ori and a still sleeping Atty. Atticus sleeps with a calm expression, like whatever he might be dreaming of is much nicer than what's going on here.
I sit up and Ori looks over, his brown-hazel eyes lighting up with a smile.
"Hey Gio," he says. He has a really pretty smile.
"Morning," I yawn. The sun is already up high in the sky.
"Why didn't you wake us?" I ask.
He shrugs. "You two looked so peaceful I couldn't make myself wake you up."
I glance at Atty, who breathes quietly. "He does look peaceful." He looks serene, except my eye keeps going to that one damn patch of facial hair that's longer than the rest of the scruff. Dammit, that bothers me.
"I know I should've awakened you both earlier, but… I couldn't do it," he says quietly.
"Hey, it's fine. It was nice, at least a little peace."
Atty sits up just then, and we both look over.
"Morning Atty!" Ori says brightly.
Atticus yawns. "Morning kiddos." I yawn instinctively after watching him do it.
"Did you sleep well?" Ori asks, his tone teasing considering he knows the answer to that.
Atticus blinks, and looks a little surprised. "Oh. Yeah. Yeah, I guess I did sleep pretty well."
"Good," I say. Ori nods.
"So, what're we doing today?" Atty asks, yawning.
Suddenly, I remember last night.
"We're actually going to stay awake when we're supposed to be awake," I say, my voice pointed.
"Huh?"
"You thought we wouldn't notice you sleeping while you were supposed to be on watch!" I cross my arms.
"Oh. Hey, I'm sorry Kiddo."
"We could've all gotten killed!"
"But we didn't."
"Yeah but we could've. Why would you ever sleep on watch!?"
"I was tired." He says it so simply.
"Why didn't you wake one of us up then!?"
"Because you were sleeping well."
"Atty!" I say despairingly.
"Look, I just have a…. Sense. It's hard to explain. It's just a sense that we weren't in any danger."
I look at Ori, my eyes wide. His werewolf sense! Ori has wide eyes as well. He was thinking the same thing.
"Okay kiddoes you're freaking me out a little bit. What's with the big eyes?"
"Last night we were talking and we figured something out about you."
"Wh-What!?" he gets all defensive and panicky like he usually does when the subject is brought up.
"But don't worry!" Ori says quickly. "We don't hate you because of your secret. We love you no matter who or what you are."
"You guys-" he looks so uncomfortable and alarmed.
"We're going to protect you. In fact, we shouldn't be talking too much more about your secret considering we could have people watching us at any time. But we know and we're going to protect you no matter what they throw at you. We're not afraid."
His eyes are wide. "H-How did you- Wh-Why-"
"We put it together all by ourselves. Your scruff and your loyalty. Your unnaturally blue eyes. The reason you're so quiet and mysterious about your personal life. Your physical capabilities and skill at training even though you aren't a Career. We finally understand, Atty," I say gently. I put a hand on his shoulder and he jumps a little bit, so I pull it back. "Sorry."
"It's f-fine… But… H-How…"
"We're just a couple of clever kids," Ori says, with a small smile.
"Atty." He looks over to me. "I know it may be a little scary that we figured it out. But it's pointless to keep pushing us away. We love you and want to help you."
"I'm not supposed to…"
Ori suddenly steps forward and hugs him. "We care a lot about you Atty. And we're going to protect you. C'mere, Gio." I join the hug. We don't hold it long considering it's pretty much hot as balls out here and we're all sweaty messes at the moment.
He still looks panicky. "Well…" Suddenly he points up. "Hey guys, look up there!" We both look up and I see an object falling toward us.
"Seriously!?" I feel a wave of relief. "Amazing!"
"We did something right guys!" The heat suddenly becomes nothing and we all jump up to get our sponsor parachute. Atty is the one to reach it and get it out of the sky.
"What is it!?" Ori says excitedly.
Atty opens the silver container and gasps. "Oh… Wow…"
"What is it!?" I try to look over his shoulder. He pulls out a set of knives, that look unlike any knives I've ever seen. Narrow, with grooves in the sharp part. I've never seen anything like it.
"What…?" Ori cocks his head to the side, confused.
"This is great!"
"Those don't look very efficient…" I say.
Atty stares at me. "Kiddo, do you not know what these are?"
"No, I don't. What are they?"
He looks at us as if it's obvious. "These are butcher knives. I've grown up with them."
"Really?" Ori asks. I always thought werewolves ate their food whole with their razor-sharp teeth. But I guess that Atty is human most of the time, so that makes sense. Besides, people have to make money somehow.
"Yeah. How else do you think I'm so good at skinning our kills?"
"Oh. I guess that's true."
Atty attaches the belt in the container to his waist and sheathes the knives in it. "This is great." He sighs. I definitely wouldn't want to cross him with those things.
Suddenly, I notice a piece of paper flutter out from where it must've been sitting on top of the belt in the container.
"Hey, a note!" I catch it quickly before it blows away.
I read it.
Don't forget the goal, Mr. Hollow.
-K
I giggle a little bit. "Hey, this is all fancy 'nd stuff. What's up with this, anyways? Listen to this, it says-"
Atty takes it from me quickly. "It's probably just some stupid Capitolite!" he says.
I laugh. "Certainly sounds like it. What's with this whole goal-"
"Probably just some perv-" He clears his throats, "Er, someone that wants me to win."
"Probably." I smile. "I guess they like how mysterious you are and decided to keep up the act."
He smiles, though it looks like it takes some effort. "Yeah." I've heard rumors that the Victors are sold into prostitution, and I bet he's heard them too. Just considering that your future will be like that is terrifying. Especially for someone demisexual like me…
"Alright, well now we can do anything we want," Atty says cheerfully. "Maybe we'll run into Ponty and crew on the way." Ori still looks unsettled at the thought of actually using those weapons. I'm not a fan of thinking about it either.
Suddenly, our thoughts are cut off by screaming, and it doesn't take long for us to figure out why. There's something coming across the ground. Slithering like a snake. Ori screams and soon I join him. What the hell kind of Arena gimmick is this!?
Wherever the thing goes, it leaves a trail of blue, yellow, and green goop on the ground.
My first thought is yes! Sand be gone!
Suddenly, though, the figure turns and starts moving towards us.
"Time to run," says Atty, taking me by the collar. I take Ori's hand and off we go. Atty keeps checking behind us and the figure keeps getting closer, leaving its trail. Suddenly I hear cracking like thunder and realize that whatever this thing is leaving, it'd be best to avoid it at all costs. Suddenly, just when I think I can't run anymore, the thing turns around and starts going the other way.
We all stop, stunned and panting (except Atty, but I'm sure it's because of his werewolf strength).
We all gaze out across the beach and resort at the goop. Then, together, we start backing away slowly, making sure it doesn't follow us on the way back. Suddenly I run into something and scream. When I hear more screaming I'm startled and scream louder.
Atty whirls around, knife raised and ready to throw in the blink of an eye. I see wide eyes all around. The girl from 11 is a head or so shorter than Atty but holds up her knife threateningly anyways. A moment of tense staring commences, before a voice shatters the silence.
"Stop!" The boy from 5 steps up putting some bright orange rubber squares in a backpack, quickly grabbing Krissa's wrist. "We really mean no harm! Please, lower the weapons!" After another tense and warning look from both of them, Krissa lowers the knife slowly, still watching like a hawk.
Ori puts a hand on Atty's wrist. "Put it down Atty," he says quietly. He means business, and I notice why when I see the little blonde girl with an 8 on her shirt. Atty lowers his weapon but doesn't let go of it. Dawson looks over at us with wide green eyes pleading.
"We don't mean harm either," Ori says pointedly.
"But I swear to Solitaire Chiarella that if you even mess up a little hair on my Kiddoes' head, one of these knives will be covered in your blood before you even have time to blink." He holds the knives up, all of them displayed between his knuckles to prove his point.
"Okay, Dad, that's enough," I say, "Now put the weapons away and keep them there."
He puts the knives away but makes an I'm watching you… gesture with his hand. Ori and I sigh.
"We're going to have to get out of this together," Dawson says. "If we eviscerate each other we may never get rid of this… Whatever it is."
"He's right," says Ori. He glances away from Dawson and to Dawn, who waves at him a little bit. He waves back.
"Alright, agreed," Krissa says. "But if you hurt any of these guys, I'll… I'll… I dunno, but you won't like it!" I wonder if Atty has good threats because he's a werewolf. I didn't know that was an asset of werewolves.
"Okay, no more threats," Dawson says. The 12 girl looks back and forth between us.
"Seven minds are better than four," she says.
"I'm sure we'll think of something."
"Look, kiddoes," Atty says. Krissa looks incredulous, and I don't blame her. They're the same age. Depending on birthdates, she could quite possibly be older than him. Dawson puts his hands on his (wide) hips and looks reluctant. Nobody says anything about it, though, so Atty keeps talking. "What's the only place that isn't completely gooped up?"
We all look out across the beach. Ori stands behind Dawn, his hands on her shoulders.
I guess Atty has werewolf vision, because I can't see anything that isn't gooped. Even the treetops are all messy. This is like weird-ass reverse I Spy (and I suck at I Spy.). Suddenly, Caledonia speaks up. "The spring. There's no goop in the water."
"Good eye, Little Lady. You're right."
"Okay, but where does that get us?" Dawn asks.
"Obviously whatever this is must be resistant to water."
Dawson especially looks suspicious. Where is he going with this…?
Atty reaches into his backpack and pulls out one of our thermoses. "Aha!" He unscrews the lid. Six pairs of eyes watch him. He's about to pour it out when Dawson practically screeches, "NO!"
He looks up. "Hm?"
Dawson looks urgent. "Did you not hear the crackling!? This stuff, whatever it may be, is electric! It's got a charge! And there's a reason you can't pee on an electric fence! That's dangerous and doing it will only get you killed! Trust me, I'm from the District of power, remember?"
"I can handle it," Atty says. I didn't know werewolves were invulnerable to electricity… Or maybe they're not and Atty's just being an overconfident bastard. Anyways, he turns the canteen and water flows out. Wherever it touches, the goop disappears and reveals my absolute favorite thing: sand. (I hate sand.)
He quickly turns it up to save what we have. "Alright, we can use this…"
Dawson is left gaping at it. "B…But… Physics…" he stammers. "That's not physics…"
Atticus just laughs easy, patting his back. "Ms. Chiarella is a smart little lady, my dear Dawson."
Dawson still looks puzzled.
"Let's walk the expanse of beach here and see if we can't find something that will help us reach the spring," Krissa says.
"Yeah!" Ori says. Krissa starts walking and the rest of following. Dawson mumbles to himself uneasily the whole way about physics. It doesn't take very long to get to the other edge of the oval we've been encased in.
Suddenly, we hear a cannon boom. Ori jumps and looks at our group, counting, as if there's a chance somebody disappeared on him. He breathes a small sigh of relief that it's nobody in our group.
Atty stays in thought for a while.
"Do you have any thermoses or anything we could use?" Atty asks. I dig through the other backpack on my shoulders to find the other two we have.
"Yes, we have one." Dawn gets it out from her backpack. When she digs through the stuff, I notice a white case with a red plus sign on it that must be a high-quality first-aid kit.
"If we can make a path to those rocks there, we can clean them and use them as steps. That tree's pretty viney and I bet we could use one to swing to the pool. Then we can use that water, as little as possible, to clean the rest of the surrounding area to go on our separate merry ways. It's… A risk."
"We're up for it!" Dawn says. The others hesitate and nod. Ori nods last of all.
"Okay. I'll go first. That way when I reach the pool, I'll splash a bit to give you guys some room for error."
Krissa crosses her arms. "You say it like you're more capable than we are."
"Oh, no, little lady, I didn't intend for that implication at all. I'm not any more or less capable than you, I'm just… More risqué." Which is true.
"Alright. Lead the way then." Atty turns over the canteen and clears a fairly thin path for all of us to walk across. He stops when he reaches the first rock, backpacking the first empty canteen (with amazing werewolf balance, of course). I hand him the second one and he cleans off the first rock, stepping on easily. He uses the rest of that canteen to clean off the second rock, slightly bigger and taller than the first. We all follow in a single file line.
"Wo-oa-oah!" Dawn wobbles a bit.
"Careful!" Atty says, cleaning off the third rock. This one is much bigger and taller than the first so he has to use pretty much the whole canteen to clean it off so we have room to climb. He gets up first and then holds hands down to help pull me up. He helps Dawson up, and Krissa before moving on to the next rock. Between the two of us, Krissa and I are able to get Caledonia, Dawn, and Ori up last.
Atty helps me up to the next ledge, handing me the last canteen. Krissa is able to climb up by herself and starts helping the others while Atty uses the last canteen to get a vine and clean it. I could've sworn I saw him touch some of the goop, but my eyes must be playing tricks on me because he looked fine and didn't notice anything weird.
"Alright. I'm gonna go down. Wish me luck."
"Atty, be careful!" Ori looks upset and fairly scared. Yeah, I feel pretty terrified now. What would we do without Atty? Just when we were becoming really close… He has to make it.
"Don't you worry, my Kiddoes. I'll be fine." He nods to us. "And if not, then good luck with the rest of the Games."
Ori looks pale that Atty talks about his own death so easily.
Then, Atty holds tight onto the vine and jumps. Straining with effort, he has to swing a couple of times to get the leverage he needs. The rest of us are stuck in tense silence, only broken by the crackling of the goop on the ground below (so far below. We're so high up….). Suddenly, we hear a splash.
Ori cheers. Atty made it!
"Good job!" I call down to him. He smiles and waves up at us. "Thanks. Now get up there and get the vine while I clean the area a little bit. He starts to splash, and I'm suddenly up with the vine.
"C'mon, Gio! You can do it! I'll be here to get you!" I swallow hard and nod.
"Be careful Gio…" Ori says.
"Right…" It's absolutely horrifying. I shut my eyes tight. Atty's here for me… I jump off, clutching the vine for dear life. I use all the effort in me to swing back and forth, and though I don't get quite as high as Atty did, I don't have to jump quite as far.
"NOW!" Atty yells, and I obey, letting go and for a split second flying aimlessly until I land in his arms with an "AUF!" Atty laughs.
"See? That wasn't so bad, now was it?"
"That was horrifying." Atty puts me down.
"Next!"
And so they all come down, one by one, until Ori and Dawn are the only ones that still have to come down. Dawn nudges him to go first, so he does.
"We've got you!" Atty says. Ori lets go and swings down, screaming like crazy.
"Swing, Ori!" we say. "Use your body to swing!" It takes him a bit but eventually he does get a little swing going. "Okay, when I say, let go!" Atty says. Ori keeps screaming. "NOW!" Atty yells over him, and Ori obeys, letting go. Atty has to run to the concrete area outside the pool to catch him. Lucky we have him and his werewolf reflexes. Also lucky that we splashed.
And so Dawn is the last one to go. She looks scared but determined not to show it.
"You can do it Dawn! Just listen to Atticus, he won't let you down!" Amazing the trust that builds up when you're being forced to work together to get out of a problem.
"Okay…" she says, so quietly I almost can't hear her. She holds onto the vine and jumps. Suddenly, in midair, the vine breaks and Dawn goes falling down before anyone can do anything to help her.
Screaming, she hits the ground hard: right into the electric goop. With one last piercing yell, ZAP!
And she's gone.
A cannon booms. Ori screams, his eyes filling with tears. "DAWN!"
Dawson and Caledonia exchange a horrified, upset look. Ori tries to run to her but luckily Atty grabs the back of his shirt just in time.
"DAWN, NO!" Ori yells, trying to run to her.
"Calm down, Kiddo!" Atty says. He doesn't seem very panicked at all. "Calm down!"
"SHE WAS TWELVE!" Ori shouts through his tears. "She didn't deserve this… She didn't deserve any of this…" He loses his footing and collapses on his knees.
"Kiddo," Atty says. No, he's only going to make it worse.
"Atty, let me get this," I say quietly. "You start cleaning some more."
"Uh, right." He gives the others a pat on the back.
"I'll help!" Dawson says quietly, his voice cracking a little bit.
"Me too," Caledonia adds. Together they start splashing around. Atty finds a faucet in the pool and soon they're all the way out on the beach. I sit with Ori and Krissa, who have both abandoned the loud crying and sit silently on the beach.
Tears come to my eyes. I'm a sympathy crier.
"I'm sorry this happened…" I say quietly. "It's not fair." Ori cries into his knees quietly, unable to say or do anything. Someone watching may think he's overreacting, but I understand. If I had to have watched Juli die like that, I don't know if I could take it. She was from my District and she was so young.
She was my sister's age, as well. The thought of Abri, my little Abri, going through something as gruesome as this and not making it… God, I can't even think about it.
And I'm sure that Ori feels the same way. I can still barely wrap my head around the fact that she's gone. And the fact that the same thing could very well happen to me, or Ori, or even… Atty.
Yeah, as hard as it is to believe, it could possibly happen to Atty.
Not even werewolves are invincible.
Anyways, this must be hard for Ori, and hard for Krissa and the other two. Dawson and Caledonia are able to keep themselves composed enough to clean while they mourn, in a silence only broken by Caledonia occasionally wiping her eyes or Dawson whimpering.
Soon things quiet, and the only noise is the still-cracking of the electricity (much quieter now, though), the running water, and the breeze rustling the trees. Ori quiets into whimpers and Krissa wipes her eyes by the time the sky starts to become dark and the sun starts to set.
"Woah!" I hear from the beach. I look up and see that all the goop is gone.
"It's all gone!" Dawson says.
"Oh, good." Atty, Dawson, and Caledonia put the nozzles back where they found them.
"Look, Kiddoes, I'm really sorry about what happened. It's not fair. I wish I could've done something for her," Atticus says quietly. I think he really means it. "I wish you all the very best in the rest of your Games."
"Thanks," Krissa says. "Good luck to you guys too." She turns to Dawson and Caledonia. "Are you coming?"
The other two exchange a look. "Yes, sure," says Dawson. Krissa holds up a hand in a goodbye before the three of them start off in the other direction.
"Well, that was…" Atty starts.
"Let's not talk about it!" Ori says quickly. His lips turn down in a frown and he looks like he may cry again.
"Alright, alright. I'll go out hunting really fast so that we can have some real dinner."
"Atty… Please don't go too far…" Ori says quietly.
"I'll be just fine, kiddo." He turns and walks off, a knife handy.
"Mmhm."
The sky gets dark and Atty starts a fire just as the Capitol anthem plays. The seal appears in the sky. Then the girl from 4 appears, and Dawn. At her appearance, Ori starts to cry again. I can tell it's going to be another of those long, restless nights.
After our small, slightly tearful dinner, Atty puts out the fire.
"You guys-"
"Sleep." Ori's voice cracks. "Sleep. I'll keep watch. Please."
Atty sighs and ruffles his hair half-heartedly. "Alright. Night, kiddo. Sleep tight."
"You too Gio."
I nod. "Alright. Night."
I lay down, and as soon as I close my eyes visions of the day we had flash in front of my eyes. I hear Ori crying quietly, but decide to let him have his privacy tonight. Eventually, I doze off into a light sleep, my heart breaking at the sound of Ori's tears.
A/N: Sorry Ori.
Next chapter: Tuesday (yes, it used to be Pontifex but I changed it) narrates the same day and gimmick from her neck of the woods!
Anyways, I'm coming to the same spiel as always: there's still the Charahub of tributes, the Celtic's SYOT tag on Tumblr is ever-so-slowly growing, and there's a poll on my profile for your favorites!
