Operation Blank Conspiracy 40

Heero lay in the bed, his body unmoving as he heard the doctors moving around, talking in low voices, and picking and prodding at his limbs. It hurt. His body hurt. His muscles still ached from whatever transformation he'd been through. He knew about the changes to his body, had felt it as his bones reconstructed themselves, shifting and popping into place making his whole body tense up.

Until recently, his whole body had been trapped in place, the oxygen mask and bandages covering features leaving him in darkness. Now it was just the oxygen mask which he assumed was left in place just in case. His heart rate was slow, enough that it seemed like he was still in a deep slumber. He waited, feinting sleep not exactly sure if he was in enemy territory or not.

He remembered fighting, more like being mutilated by 01. The other stood and crushed his body under heavy feet. He wasn't human. Either that or his feet and hands had been replaced by cyborg parts. It seemed illogical that he was a machine considering his intelligence. Robots weren't intelligent enough to move so fluidly, so individually as to think on their own.

The chance for escape came an hour later as the last two doctors left him in peace in the darkened room. He waited in silence a little longer, waiting and making sure he didn't hear anyone else in the room moving around before letting his eyes pop open. He let his eyes roam the semi lit room, noticing first the medical devices attached to his body monitoring his heart rate. He couldn't escalate it too high or they'd figure out he was awake.

Carefully, he sat himself up, popping joints that had been inactive for far too long. It didn't feel anything like having his broken bones completely moving around in the limited amount of space in his body. His phone was sitting beside the bed he was laying on, a good sign. If he still had his personal items, he must be in a friendly zone. Reaching over, his fingertips just barely touched it before he dug his nail in pulling the phone over to him checking it after he gained access to it.

Messages from Wufei. Messages from Trowa and Quatre. Concern over his safety, of not hearing from him. Nothing from Duo. He hadn't received one from Duo since the last time he'd seen him. Was Duo still alive? He needed to check with the others to find out. He was about to call Quatre when he paused staring down at the last two text. They were from Wufei.

-Watch the news.

-Are you awake yet?

Frowning, Heero stared down at the message before he looked towards the TV. It couldn't be good news if Wufei was telling him to do this. But then he noticed the small piece of tape, unnoticed by the untrained eye. He frowned before he closed his phone up looking at the wires in his arm. He was in a white gown, the clothes he wore earlier missing and discarded and bloody from his abuse. He knew once he pulled those wires out, he'd only have a little time to make his move before the nurses and doctors came in. But that tape…was something stuck behind the TV? Was that what Wufei was referring too? It had to be. It wasn't like Wufei knew when he'd wake up right? Just that he knew he'd wake up….

Taking the chance, Heero gripped the wires waiting as he stared at it before he looked up again. He was going to have to be quick when he did this. Taking a deep breath, he yanked all of the wires out, the needle coming out of his skin making him wince. He glanced down at the hole left behind, expecting to see blood coming out before he saw the hole healing up suddenly. What the hell was going on with his body? The blaring of the monitors beeping drew his attention back to the matter at hand. He stood quickly, not even off balance from not moving around however long he'd been laying there. The ten steps to the TV were quick, his hand reaching up snatching the syringe from behind it before he looked around.

The quickest way out of the room was through the window. He knew with the condition he was sure his body had been in and how he was now, the doctors wouldn't let him leave the hospital so soon, not without experimenting and testing. He could probably wait on orders from Colonel Une that would force the doctors to discharge him, but he didn't have time for that. If Duo hadn't contacted him yet, it meant he was still in danger. That also meant that Queen Relena was in danger as well.

He unknowingly followed Wufei's route, taking the window and using his newfound strength to swing down to the next window. Though his face didn't show it, he was amazed at how light his body felt. He felt like he was walking on air. He felt stronger than he used to be. He wondered about the syringe held in his hand, wondered about its content. Wufei had to have answers. That's who he needed to get in touch with.

Slipping into the second floor window hoping to find some better clothes, he noticed it was a doctor's office. The lights were out inside meaning that this particular doctor was out of the office today. But conveniently there was a doctor's coat inside along with some operation wardrobe that he slipped into quickly. No shoes but the slippers he had on his feet, but he could only hope no one noticed them. Slipping on the clothes and placing the mask over his mouth and the hat over his hair, he peeked out of the office, looking in both directions before slipping out closing the door behind him. Nothing. It was empty. Good.

It didn't take much to slip into the gift shop, walking past a pair of shoes and walking away with them as if it never happened. Who'd watch a doctor in a gift shop anyway? Pausing in the stairwell, he switched out his slippers for the hard bottom black shoes before he moved the rest of the way down the steps quickly. As he walked he tucked down the mask using his phone to call Wufei. The other answering the phone was almost instantaneous.

"Yuy?"

"Wing," Heero reminded him though he admitted to feeling a little happy hearing the concern in Wufei's voice. "Is everything ok?"

"I'm fine here," Wufei said sounding almost offended by the question. "I should be asking you that! Are you ok?"

"I'm fine," Heero said as he slipped past the guards watching over the front door and out into the darkness of the night. "I'm just leaving. We need to talk."

"Yeah…I figured as much," Wufei said. "You find your gift behind the television?"

"Yeah…." Heero paused being far enough away from the hospital as he looked down at it frowning. "What is it?"

"…Fly-Z."

"….What?" He knew the hostility was heard in his voice, especially considering how much he hated the Fly-Z. This was the stuff that made Duo into what he was, why he couldn't stand doctors or anything hospital related. It was why Duo had suffered abuse since an early age. "…Did you use this on me?"

"It was either that or you dying." Wufei sounded defensive, like his was backed into a corner with his haunches up. "And right now we need all the help we can get to help save Duo."

"Where is Duo?" It was a question that had been running through his mind since he'd woken up.

"…We don't know yet." Wufei paused before he continued, like he needed a moment. "Treize thinks he might know where he is though."

"Treize?" Heero frowned. Had Wufei changed sides? Was he working with the enemy now? "Is it because Treize was the one who kidnapped him?"

"No he just-"

"Is he trying to get me too? To finish up what was started?"

"He's not trying to-"

"Is he trying to control Duo? Kill him? Kill the queen?"

"Will you just shut up and listen!" Wufei's loud outburst made Heero stop talking, though it didn't make the frown on his lips go away. "If it wasn't for Treize's intervention, Duo would still be hurting from the MS13 mission. Hell, he'd probably be dead if we didn't use this stuff on him."

That did make Heero listen, his brows lifting slightly at the idea of Duo dying. "…Why would Duo die?"

"Just…"Wufei sighed with defeat. "Just agree to meet up with us so I can explain this all in person and not over some phone."

"…Fine."

"Also don't tell Quatre and Trowa about this. Not yet anyway. It could make things harder than they are right now." He agreed to that before Wufei finally, almost reluctantly gave him the coordinates to his location. After inputting it in his phone, he headed off to meet up with Wufei and his suspicious sidekick Treize.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::

He had a feeling that Heero wouldn't be happy to see him as he waited outside the car for him in an empty, darkened parking lot. So Wufei wasn't surprised to see Heero heading his way with the most cautious steps he'd ever seen him use. It seemed almost ridiculous in Wufei's eyes, especially since he now believed that Treize posed no threat towards them. Then again, that may have been that special ability Treize had to make himself seem like less of a threat. Wufei knew the same would happen to Heero once he was in Treize's presence. There was no helping that. Besides, standing outside away from Treize kept Wufei from having to deal with the straying hand that for some reason kept migrating to his hips. He'd popped the hands plenty of times, his body left burning in the aftermath of the touches, just glad he had clothes on.

"Just hear us out," Wufei said as Heero stopped steps away from the car. "If you don't believe it then…you have the right to turn me in to Preventers Headquarters as traitor. I won't fight against it, I'll go willingly."

At Heero's brief nod, Wufei sighed and opened the door to let Heero climb in. He was sure that if this didn't have anything to do with Duo, Heero probably would never have come. They didn't get along, not in the friendliest of ways anyway. Hell, the last time they really spoke was in an argument where Wufei had told him to stay away from Duo. If that didn't make him look any more suspicious…. But then it was obvious that Duo and Heero had gotten closer since then, since that last mission with Colonel Po. Not that Wufei had complaints about it as long as Duo didn't get hurt. And if there was one thing that Heero and Wufei agreed on, it was that they wanted to do their best to protect Duo.

He climbed into the car behind Heero closing the door and locking it. He was glad Treize left the window up so the driver couldn't hear what they were talking about. Though the way Treize had spoken about him earlier, the driver would follow him into hell if he had to. There were apparently a lot of soldiers that follow Treize like a cult leader. Wufei made sure to make it known that he was not one of them. But Treize only smirked at that and didn't say a word. Bastard…he was still a bastard.

"Greetings…Yuy, isn't it?"

"Yeah…" Heero glanced over at Wufei showing his disapproval. Well it had been a slip of the tongue when Heero had called him. He'd forgotten in whose presence he was in. Not that Treize would even be able to get any information about Heero anyway. It was really just another code name borrowed from a pacifist named Heero Yuy who'd been assassinated well before Wufei even knew how to fight. None of the others even knew Heero's real name. They didn't even know anything about his past. Of course, they barely knew about each other's either.

"So…." Treize leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared at Heero with those icy eyes that sent a chill through Wufei's body. "How are you feeling?"

"…Fine."

Treize smiled sitting back again. "Not a man of many words I see."

"Cut to the chase," Heero said glaring at him though Wufei could see that the other was starting to relax. Treize just had that effect on people. And Wufei hated to say it, but when Treize felt like being a threat, it was almost…scary. "Where is 02? Where is Queen Relena?"

"Hm." Treize just smirked before he sat back again. "My guess would be in space."

"…Your guess."

"I don't have many materials to go on," Treize said. "But I can assume that their intentions in kidnapping the queen are not to hurt her, but to use her. It may even be they're keeping her to protect her."

"…Protect?" Wufei blinked a bit. They hadn't really talked about any of this earlier, so a lot of this was new to him. "Why would they want to protect the queen? Hell, why kidnap her to do it?"

"That you'll have to find out yourselves. If you haven't picked up on it yet, you have a traitor in your midst."

"…A traitor?" Heero frowned glancing at Wufei who just shook his head. "What are you trying to insinuate, Treize?"

"From what I gathered from your friend here, 02 was in disguise. He was apparently someone I spoke to without even realizing it. A girl by the name of Duet." Treize turned his eyes on Heero watching him carefully. "Who all at your base knew that 02 would be in disguise?"

…Well it wasn't like many people even knew they were on this mission. That would leave the colonels in HQ, more particularly Colonel Une who usually kept contact with Heero. And she would have told the other two colonels about the plan as well. Then there were the two maids that worked under Relena who helped Duo to get ready. Wait…but didn't Colonel Noin keep in touch with the palace often keeping tabs on Relena's safety? She'd been the closest to the elitist Milliardo Peacecraft before his death. And since Relena was his sister….

Wufei glanced over at Heero seeing the dawning expression on his face as he looked at him return. It made sense. To keep someone safe, to keep Relena safe. But what would she want with Duo? Why take him as well? What were they planning on doing with him? It made sense now, on how 01 could have known that they were leaving from L2 so many months ago. OZ, or whatever organization it was, shouldn't have known that they were leaving that day in that particular place. But they would if they had connections.

They would know Duo and Trowa were going to be on the MS13 mission and so could set up the ambush that injured Duo. But in that case, how did they know how to injury Duo? That was something they still needed to figure out. They were still missing something. Granted it bothered Wufei to be suspicious of the colonel he'd known since he arrived at HQ. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe there was someone else on board that knew about their plans.

Heero's phone ringed drawing Wufei's attention to him as the brunette pulled the phone to his ear pushing the answer button.

"Yeah…yeah I'm fine..." Heero looked over at them as he spoke, his eyes especially watchful of Treize. He must have been talking to Quatre from the sound of frantic worry he could sense coming from the phone. "I'll explain it later…yeah…I'm heading into space." From the loud high pitched, sounds of conversation coming from the phone, Wufei could assume that Quatre wasn't happy about the results. "Whatever, just don't let the colonels know. I'll explain it all when I have time." He didn't even say bye, hanging up on the sputters of the blond on the phone.

"…Heading into outer space?"

"Yeah," Heero said looking at Wufei. "If our enemies are in outer space, then I want to be there to defeat them." He frowned looking down at the syringe of Fly-Z held in his hand. "This…is the stuff used on 02, correct?"

"More or less," Treize said crossing his legs in amusement.

"….What do you mean more or less?"

"…It is a modified version of the Fly-Z," Treize said leaning forward like he was getting excited about the conversation, except his voice and face didn't show it. "It's essentially a weaker version but with less side effects, or really the lack of killing a person. Meaning it either works or it doesn't."

"…And that would explain why I can still feel pain."

"Somewhat. The original Fly-Z could neutralize pain to an extent. Meaning you can still feel the pain, but it should subside quickly once the area heals. It accelerates the healing of the injured place on the body to make it seem like it's unable to be hurt."

Treize reached down fingering the sword at his side as he continued. "Meaning if I were to stab 02 in the heart with my sword and pull it out, he'd feel the pain of it but his body would heal it quickly enough that it wouldn't last. But if I left my sword there, the pain would be agonizing. The Fly-Z would either force the sword out to heal him, or kill him outright if he's unable to remove it. But then I've heard of cases where the heart would shift and move around the sword to rebuild. It is still something of a mystery to me."

"…02 says he can't feel pain."

"…Then it's possible that he's been trained not to feel it while under the influence of the Fly-Z," Treize said frowning. "Meaning being tortured nonstop until the pain seemed like something second nature. However, if his body were to lose the effects of the Fly-Z, the pain would be ten times more excruciating than to a regular person."

"And the noise?"

"…The noise?"

Wufei frowned sitting up more. "02 mentioned to me that he heard a noise. He said it was really painful."

"…The noise is probably something used to neutralize the effects of Fly-Z." Treize reached over grabbing a bottle of wine by the door and popped the cork off before he grabbed three glasses. "A drink?"

"We're both under 21 so no," Wufei said answering for the both of them. "How much do you know about that noise?"

"Not much to be honest," Treize said lifting a brow at Wufei's answer before putting the other two glasses away. "But I do know that if a person creates something powerful like that, they'll want to find a way to get rid of it in case it starts working against them." He poured himself some of the wine from the bottle and lifted the glass to his lips sipping at it, his eyes resting on Wufei over the rim.

"Whatever," Heero said resting his hand on the door. "Either way, the first priority is finding out where 02 and the queen are being kept. We'll investigate into if we have a traitor on our team as well." He frowned like he didn't like the idea before he sat up looking at Treize again. "You said 02 was in space…how much of this is just a guess?"

"…The majority of it," Treize said not even bothered by the glare Heero gave him at the answer. "However, the group I believe to be responsible for it does have justification to be the ones to have done it."

"Why do you think that?"

"Because." Treize sat the glass down before focusing attention on Heero. "Their leader, Zechs Marquise, seems to have a great affinity for the Peacecraft family. Granted, I've never met him before. But his voice seems to hold a form of endearment whenever he mentions the family. And considering that he hates Earth, that is saying something."

"Hate's Earth?" Wufei tensed up starting to get an idea of what group he was talking about. "…You can't mean that he's…."

"Yes," Treize said looking at him. "Zechs Marquise. He is the leader of the White Fang group. It's the reason I said this could work in our convenience since I am scheduled to meet with him on his vessel to finalize the plans for the Gundanium alloy." The blue eyes flickered over to Heero quickly, but without alarm. "So, will you join us in our quest? Or do you plan to do things your own way."

Heero seemed to hesitate at the words, frowning as he glanced out the window before finally speaking. "If it means the chance of saving Queen Relena and 02 then I'll cooperate."

TBC…

And next we're going to outer spaaaaace again.
