Under My Nose

Bella Swan needs a change in pace, a slower groove to enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer her. She moves from the Big Apple to the Big Easy, from subways to streetcars, from nouveau chic to historically quaint, from a large Manhattan apartment near Park Avenue to a shotgun house with her eccentric aunt, in Mid City and off Canal Street. She's ready for love, commitment and that happily ever after, but does she have the patience to wait out her heart's desire? It's frustrating to be right, 'under his nose'.

Thank you to the readers who follow and favorite that I am unable to send a thank you PM.

Chapter 38:

BPOV: February into March

My heart beats so fast I feel it in my throat. Renee lies in my arms with scrapes, and bruises stinking of liquor, cigarettes and garbage. From what I can get out of her, she fell into the trash dumpster trying to climb to one of the second floor windows.

She clutches my arm. "I needed to see you, Isabella. You have to listen to me."

Renee rambles on, mumbling, "I'm sorry, so sorry. I have no excuses for my behavior. I didn't think I was interfering." She tries to keep eye contact, but her eyes waver. "I thought you would be happy if I tried to do something to help you. I thought if I paved the way, you could show Donald how talented you are."

I sigh. "But it was sneaky and underhanded."

"I just wanted to help. I'm also sorry for barging in on your Mardi Gras party. I had no idea what was going on. I honestly went to Sally's house to talk with her. I was completely unaware that you were dating someone." She snorts. "A someone who proposed to you." She glares over at Edward.

Renee moans. "I said some terrible things." She shifts and hisses. "I always do."

I mumble, "That, you do."

Renee pulls away from me and tries to stand. She cries out in pain and topples over. "Oh my God, I can't stand. There's pain in my hip." She's frantic. "I have pain in my hip."

Edward quietly bends and gently steadies her. "You may have broken your hip, Renee. Try to remain still. I'll call for an ambulance."

She grabs my arm panicking."But you believe me? I'm in pain. I'm not trying to…"

Sally walks toward us intensely staring at Renee. "Renee, what the hell are you up to?"

Renee becomes extremely childlike, cringes and releases my arm. "I fell, Sally. This is not a trick." No fake crying, no hysterics, and no bitch attitude is coming from Renee. I watch her carefully.

Sally's face softens. "What happened?" She crosses her arms over her chest.

Renee blushes and points upward. "I tried to climb to the second floor window, lost my footing and fell into the dumpster."

Sally tries to hide her giggle. "Klutz."

"I was a little drunk," Renee admits with a small smile, raising her eyebrows and shrugging.

Sally waves her hand over Renee. "Was? And you stink."

"Well, the dumpster isn't Chanel," she coyly jokes, as she moves her hip and moans in pain.

Sally sighs and rolls her eyes.

Edward announces that an ambulance is on the way.

"Edward, would you mind picking Renee up and bringing her inside? I doubt the parking lot is comfortable," she quietly pleads.

Edward nods his head, looks at me and I shrug.

"Maybe we shouldn't move her," Edward expresses concern.

Sally grumbles, "She didn't hurt her back or neck." She looks at Edward. "Please, just be careful lifting her.

He carefully bends down placing his hands under Renee's knees and back. He slowly stands. "You okay?"

Renee humbly looks Edward in the eyes and pats his shoulder. "Thank you, young man, I'm fine."

Edward walks through the kitchen into the dining room as we follow behind him. He places Renee gently on a padded bench by the back of the bar.

I glance over and see my father stand with a look of concern on his face as he asks Edward, "What happened?"

Everyone else looks on with amazement.

Quietly, Emmett murmurs a, "what the fuck?".

Jasper glares while Alice makes a face, and Mama Jean watches with a knowing look, nodding her head.

Edward explains the noise and our investigation. The jury is out on whether or not Renee was telling the truth or not.

Dad shakes his head and walks over to Renee.

She looks up at him trying to focus. "I know you think I purposely did this for attention."

"I don't think anything, Renee, I know you were trying something that seems to have gone terribly wrong."

"I'm that transparent?" she huffs.

"As clear as a sunny day!" Charlie emphatically states.

Mama Jean opens the front door as the paramedics bring in a stretcher.

Once they assess Renee's injuries, they recommend a trip to the hospital. Dad volunteers to ride with her in the ambulance and to give us updates while we remain behind.

Six and a half hours later, he calls and tells us that Renee has been admitted with a hairline fracture on the inside of her right hip, which will put her out of commission for quite a few weeks. The hospital readies a room for her, and Dad plans on spending the night. Yeah, I feel reconciliation there. His idle threats on leaving her mean nothing.

Tomorrow's a busy day. We have our usual early morning prep, but late afternoon Jasper has a carriage ride want the total package with Jean Lafitte, his wench and parler français (speaking French). I have to talk Edward into wearing some eyeliner. That thought gives me the shivers.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

After prep, Edward and I return upstairs to get ready for our carriage ride. aAt my insistence, we take separate showers, since his shower seems to be his aphrodisiac. My fiancé loves to taunt me with his nakedness, and being a normal female, I can't help but look at his broad shoulders, tight ass and bulging, hard exterior.

"It's my dick, Bella. You see it wants you." He smiles so playfully. Yeah, taunts my inner desires to ride that bull with every bucking bronco sense in my lower regions.

He smiles, no smirks, waving … I wave my hand back and forth … waving, oh God, his large, yummy Edward dick at me. "Stop that!"

Here comes the temptation as he walks slowly towards me stalking me as a lion does his prey. "You're a magnet, and I have a steel-tipped arrow."

"What has gotten into you today? You know we have a tour to do in less than a half hour." My eyes widen, and I try not to look at 'it'.

He palms himself. "You know you want it."

"You act as though it has a mind of its own." I still stare.

"It does when it comes to you … or for you." Sexy, dreamy voice.

"Edward?" I start to back away slowly.

"Look at you, Bella, in your shiny, lacy underwear. The color almost matches your irresistible, creamy skin." He finally stands before me, running a hand up my arm, playing with my bra strap, and sliding it off my shoulder. He kisses my collar bone from the top of my arm. "You feel so soft and smell so fucking good." His hands cup my ass and squeeze.

I whimper. "I just had a shower." My eyes are tightly shut. Oh God, another whimper escapes my mouth. "You're not playing fair."

"Who says I want to play fair?" He kisses my neck running his tongue over my ear.

I swallow hard.

No… damn … fair!

I breathe heavily. "As much as I would love to roll you in clover, we have a job to do."

"Yeah, and we can be a few minutes late." Both his hands cup my neck, slide into my hair, and I get long, slow kisses around my lips. And 'it' presses against my quivering belly. He whispers into my ear blowing on my neck, "I want you, Bella."

"I see that." I sigh and start to laugh.

"You're laughing?" He stands back with this hurt look on his face.

"Yes. I swear, Emmett has possessed you today. Now, where is my Edward and what have you done with him?" I snap my fingers.

His shocked face drops and he looks away from me.

I realize he truly is hurt. "Edward?"

He sighs, and places both hands on my hips. "Emmett said I need to fucking seduce you."

"What?" I squeak.

"He thinks I need to show you more attention. Well, sexual attention," he mumbles.

I smile at him lovingly. "That's what this was all about?" I bring my voice up an octave, "Emmett said?"

He sits on the edge of the bed. 'It' has now deflated rather quickly. His voice is but a whisper. "I'm trying to be a good partner."

I sit next to him. "You are a great partner." I take his hands and weave my fingers through his. "I adore you, Edward Cullen. You don't ever have to question if you are pleasing me or giving me attention. We live together, we work together and we play rather nicely together." I smile broadly. "So, don't listen to your stupid brother." I huff, "Yeah right, he's such an expert. You are doing just fine on your own."

He looks down at limp 'it'. "But?"

I stare at 'it'. "'It' does just fine, but not now. Okay?"

He smiles. "Thanks."

I get up and walk towards the closet, mumbling. "Yeah, gets me all excited. My stomach's in knots all trembling. I'm going to kill Emmett."

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Sexual tension is high, but I think this will work for us with our characters all set for the carriage ride.

Edward looks amazingly handsome in his tight, gray pants and knee-high boots, crisp white-cotton, shirt with long, balloon sleeves, navy waistcoat with wide lapels, and his gambler hat. Ooo, it shows off his cut jawline and silky, bronze ends. Oh, and black eyeliner. Johnny Depp has nothing on my Edward.

I look rather adorable in my lavender, full skirt, white off the shoulder, low-cut blouse and a thick, purple-knit shawl. My hair falls in curls over my shoulders with a purple bandanna around the crown of my head. I wear black, lace-up, ankle boots and a warm pair of knit tights, since we still have cool weather in the mid-sixties.

We find our couple in front of Cafe du Monde. Surprisingly, they are two women; Melissa and Ariss. Edward looks at me with pleading eyes.

I whisper into his ear, "Edward, they are women, just be Jean Lafitte and stop overthinking it."

I greet them with a warm, 'Bonjour Mesdames' while Edward walks around, extending his hand and helping them into the carriage.

He gets back into the driver's seat and announces, "Il est merveilleux d'être dans la présence de trois belles dames, et je vais essayer de maintenir mes façons courtoises." (It is wonderful to be in the presence of three lovely ladies, and I will try to maintain my gentlemanly ways.)

He plays with my shoulder. "Mais je trouve plutôt difficile de ne pas toucher cette peau fine sur ma belle Isabella." (But I will find it rather difficult not to touch this fine skin on my lovely Isabella.) He growls, and Melissa and Ariss laugh.

We ride all throughout the French Quarter, Edward pointing out sites and storytelling the history as it happened yesterday and me playing the part of the 'wench'. I lean over him wiping his brow under the hat, and Edward leans down for a quick kiss to my cleavage and takes a little nip that makes me 'yelp'. "C'est un beau jour pour la conduite à travers les collines." (It is a fine day for driving through the hills.)

Melissa chuckles. "Oui, il n'y a rien à comparer collines de chair.." (Yes, there is nothing to compare to flesh hills.)

Ariss laughs heartily."Mais les miens sont des fourmilières." (But mine are ant hills.)

John Lafitte deeply laughs. "Toute la colline est grand pour grimper." (Any hill is great to climb.)

Jean laughingly bellows, "J'ai rencontré mon Isabella à ma taverne. Elle attendit sur les tables, elle attendait de moi, et je l'ai pris pendant trois jours et trois nuits." (I met my Isabella at my tavern. She waited on tables; she waited on me, and I took her for three days and three nights.)

He takes my hand and kisses my palm so very tenderly, and I coo in response.

Melissa and Ariss giggle in the back.

"Je ne permets pas à quitter mon côté. Nous vivons, travaillons et jouons ... cordialement ... passionnément ... ensemble. Elle est à moi de garder et de posséder." (I do not allow her to leave my side. We live, work and play … heartily … passionately… together. She is mine to keep and possess.) Jean pauses to capture my eyes; both of us know this is no act.

I stare at him with wide eyes, and he grabs me by the hair. He pushes me forward and kisses me deeply. When we pull apart I am breathless, he emanates lust. God, I want to jump him.

"You two are very cute. I hope that wasn't acting." Ariss smiles as I turn to her.

"Are we that obvious?" I blush and wave my hand over my flushed face.

"Girlfriend, you two are like beacons to one another," Melissa shouts. "I'm getting all hot watching you."

And from out of nowhere, Edward says, "I tried to take her this morning; she accused me of being a scalawag and denied me, not wanting us to be late for this engagement."

I poke him. "I swear you are turning into your brother."

"I may be a scalawag my beautiful wench, but unlike my brother, what I have wags for you."

Both women laugh.

"How long are you married?" Melissa asks.

Edward again answers, "I marry her on April first."

Both women, 'awwww'.

"Well, you seem eager Edward," Ariss kids.

And he looks right at me, "From the moment I met her."

I go, 'awww' and whisper into his ear, "Wait til tonight." I bite my inner cheek, and he pulls it.

"I'm counting on it."

Edward stops the carriage right outside Jackson Square. As I stand and turn to get down from the carriage, I get a whopping swat and a lingering squeeze on my ass. "Jeune fille, mis en place là-bas près de ces arbres." ( Wench, set up over there near those trees.) Edward points near the open grass, and gives me that half smile and a wink.

I lay out the plush, fleur de lis blanket as Edward opens the picnic basket pulling out a bottle of champagne. Melissa and Ariss sit, and Edward hands them both a flute of the bubbly.

I take all the food containers out and place them onto the blanket with plates and silverware.

The menu is a variety of Chinese appetizers since the first place they met was a Chinese buffet. Edward hands me a flute and we both toast them.

"Compliments from Savoreaux. Merci et profitez de votre repas. J'espère que nous allons vous revoir." (Thank you and enjoy your meal. I hope we will see you again.)

Both women thank us as we walk through the park, hand in hand, and go collect our Julia.

And thank you to all the readers, whether you review or not. I enjoy every comment and suggestion. Yes, NOLA (New Orleans, LA) is an exciting place to live. And to combine the old world with the new is a challenge, but the humor is quite a serious business. My objective is for all of you to smile, after each chapter.

Recipes:

When it doubt, eat Chinese appetizers!

Pan Fried Pancakes

¼ teaspoon salt

¾ cup warm water

1 cup all-purpose flour

¼ teaspoon vegetable oil

¼ cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 tablespoon Asian (toasted) sesame oil, or as needed

½ cup finely chopped green onion

1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or as needed

Dissolve salt in warm water, and mix in 1 cup of flour to make a soft dough. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured work surface, and knead until slightly springy, about 5 minutes. If the dough is sticky, knead in 1/4 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Divide the dough into 8 equal-size pieces, and keep the pieces covered with a cloth.

In a bowl, mix ¼ cup of flour with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to make a mixture like fine crumbs

On a floured work surface, roll a piece of dough out into a thin square about 5x7 inches in size, brush the dough with toasted sesame oil, and sprinkle lightly with about 1 ½ teaspoon of the flour-oil mixture. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of chopped green onion onto the dough, and spread the onion out evenly. Starting with a long end, roll the dough up into a rope shape, and pinch the seam and the ends closed. Roll the rope shape into a flat spiral, and press lightly with your hands to compact the spiral and keep it from unrolling.

Place the spiral down onto the floured work surface, and gently roll it out into a pancake with the onions folded inside, turning the pancake over often as you roll it out. Roll gently and turn often to avoid making holes in the pancakes. Finished pancakes should be about 5 inches in diameter. Repeat with the rest of the dough pieces, making 8 onion pancakes.

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat, and brush with vegetable oil. Pan-fry each pancake in the hot skillet until golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Cut into wedges and serve warm.

Chinese Tea Leaf Eggs

8 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

3 cups water

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon black soy sauce

¼ teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons black tea leaves

2 pods star anise

1 (2 inch) piece cinnamon stick

1 tablespoon tangerine zest

In a large saucepan, combine eggs and 1 teaspoon salt; cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat, drain, and cool. When cool, tap eggs with the back of a spoon to crack shells (do not remove shells).

In a large saucepan, combine 3 cups water, soy sauce, black soy sauce, salt, tea leaves, star anise, cinnamon stick, and tangerine zest. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 3 hours. Remove from heat, add eggs, and let steep for at least 8 hours.

Chinese Style Stuffed Mushroom

15 large fresh mushrooms, stems removed

½ pound ground pork

¼ slice Chinese salted turnip (chung choi), rinsed and chopped

1 tablespoon soy sauce

3 tablespoons finely chopped canned water chestnuts

¼ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon white sugar

Remove stems from mushrooms and discard or save for another use. Wipe caps clean with a dry towel.

In a bowl, combine the pork, turnip, soy sauce, water chestnuts, salt, and sugar until thoroughly mixed. Spoon stuffing tightly into mushroom caps. Arrange in a steamer basket, stuffing side up, over boiling water. Cover, and cook for 30 minutes. Serve hot.

Chinese Chicken Wings

2 cups soy sauce

2 cups brown sugar

2 tablespoons garlic powder

5 pounds chicken wings, split and tips discarded

Stir the soy sauce, brown sugar, and garlic powder in a saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir until the sugar melts completely. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Place the chicken wings in a large bowl. Pour sauce mixture over the wings and toss to coat evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Allow chicken to marinate in refrigerator overnight or 8 hours.

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F.

Pour the chicken wings and marinate int 13 - inch baking dish.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.

Bake in preheated oven until thoroughly hot, about 45 minutes.

Remove aluminum foil from the baking dish and continue baking uncovered another 15 minutes. Serve hot.

Crab Rangoon

1 (14 ounce) package small wonton wrappers

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened

1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root

½ teaspoon chopped fresh cilantro

½ teaspoon dried parsley

3 tablespoons dark soy sauce

1 pound crabmeat, shredded

1 quart oil for frying

Heat oil in large heavy skillet or deep fryer 360 degrees F.

In a small bowl, mix together cream cheese, ginger root, cilantro, parsley, soy sauce and crabmeat.

Place a teaspoon of mixture into the center of a wonton. Fold wonton wrapper over crab mixture to make a triangle and moisten edges with water, and seal. Place under a moistened towel until ready for frying.

Fry 3 - 4 wontons at a time in the hot oil. Cook until golden brown, turning once. Remove and drain on a paper towel. Serve hot.

Egg Rolls

4 teaspoons vegetable oil

3 eggs, beaten

1 medium head of cabbage, finely shredded

½ carrot, julienned

1 (8 oz) can bamboo shoots

1 cup dried, shredded wood ear mushrooms, rehydrated

1 pound roasted pork, Chinese BBQ, cut into matchsticks

2 green onions, thinly sliced

2 ½ teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

1 (14 oz) package egg roll wrappers

1 egg white, beaten

4 cups oil for frying

Heat 1 teaspoon vegetable oil in a wok or skillet over medium heat. Pour in beaten eggs, cook without stirring. Flip over and cook an additional 20 seconds. Set egg pancake to one side to cool, then slice into strips.

Heat remaining oil in chosen pan. Stir in cabbage and carrot; cook 2 minutes. Add bamboo, mushrooms, pork, green onions, soy sauce, salt, and sugar, cooking until vegetables are soft, about 6 minutes. Stir in egg slices, spread mixture in a pan, and refrigerate until cool, about an hour.

To assemble the egg rolls, place a wrapper onto your work surface with one corner pointing towards you. Place about 3 tablespoons of cooled filling in a heap onto the bottom third of the wrapper. Brush a little beaten egg white onto the top two edges of the wrapper, then fold the bottom corner over the filling and roll firmly to the halfway point. Fold the left and right sides snugly over the egg roll, then continue rolling until the top corners seal the egg roll with the egg white. Repeat with remaining egg roll wrappers, covering finished egg rolls with plastic wrap to keep from drying out.

Heat about 6-inches of oil in a wok or deep-fryer to 350 degrees F

Fry egg rolls until golden brown, 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Chinese Barbecued Spareribs

⅓ cup hoisin sauce

¼ cup soy sauce

3 tablespoons dry sherry

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 tablespoons sugar

¾ teaspoon red food coloring

¼ teaspoon Chinese five spice powder

1 2-lb slab of ribs, individually cut

Whisk together all ingredients in a large bowl. Add ribs. Toss to marinate. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside for one hour.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large pan, place a rack with rib meat side up. Place pan in the middle of the oven. Pour water into pan without touching ribs. Bake ribs for 35 minutes. Baste ribs with reserved marinade. Flip ribs over and baste again. Raise heat to 450 degrees. Continue baking until ribs are tender and glazed, about 20 minutes more.

Teriyaki Chicken or Beef Sticks

3 lb flank steak or chicken

⅓ cup brown sugar

½ cup soy sauce

1 garlic clove, crushed

1 ½ teaspoon ginger root, crushed

Soak skewers in water.

Place beef or chicken in a bowl.

Combine all ingredients. Add to meat/chicken and marinate for 30 minutes.

Thread meat/chicken on skewers.

Broil over hot coals 3-5 minutes on each side.

Cold Bubble Tea

To make bubble tea, it requires about 4 steps. The first step is to make the tapioca. You're going to need 1 cup of tapioca to about 7-8 cups of water.

For the second part, you're going to need to make a tea base. Generally, for a classic bubble tea, black tea is your best choice.

For the third part, we're going to need to make our syrup, which is the basis of our flavor. For our classic, we're going to make a honey simple syrup using 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and half a cup of honey. For our honey simple syrup, it's as simple as combining all the ingredients and bringing it to a boil.

Tea Base

2 cups water to 1 cup of tea. We really want this tea to be nice and strong so that after we add all our ingredients, the tea flavor will come through.

Tapioca

Once you've got in your 8 cups of water boiling, you're going to want to pour in your tapioca and just keep it in motion so the tapioca doesn't stick. You're going to want to let it cook for about 5 minutes in boiling water.

Combine Tapioca and Syrup

Once your tapioca is cooked and it's nice and tender but still a little chewy, combine it with your simple syrup. This way the tapioca balls don't stick together and that sweet flavor starts to infuse into the tapioca itself.

The Finish

Drain off half a cup of tapioca pearls and place it into our serving glass. Now we're going to take roughly about half a cup of ice and put it into our shaker. One cup of milk, 3 ounces of our syrup and 1 full cup of our tea base. Now shake your mixture, pour the tea mixture over the tapioca, place in a thick straw and now you're ready to serve.

Fortune Cookies

2 large egg whites

½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

½ teaspoon pure almond extract

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

8 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 ½ teaspoons cornstarch

¼ teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons granulated sugar

3 teaspoons water

Write fortunes on pieces of paper that are 3 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease 2 9-X-13 inch baking sheets.

In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg white, vanilla extract, almond extract and vegetable oil until frothy, but not stiff.

Sift the flour, cornstarch, salt and sugar into a separate bowl. Stir the water into the flour mixture.

Add the flour into the egg white mixture and stir until you have a smooth batter. The batter should not be runny, but should drop easily off a wooden spoon.

Place level tablespoons of batter onto the cookie sheet, spacing them at least 3 inches apart. Gently tilt the baking sheet back and forth and from side to side so that each tablespoon of batter forms into a circle 4 inches in diameter.

Bake until the outer 1/2-inch of each cookie turns golden brown and they are easy to remove from the baking sheet with a spatula (14 - 15 minutes).

Working quickly, remove the cookie with a spatula and flip it over in your hand. Place a fortune in the middle of a cookie.

To form the fortune cookie shape, fold the cookie in half, then gently pull the edges downward over the rim of a glass, wooden spoon or the edge of a muffin tin. Place the finished cookie in the cup of the muffin tin so that it keeps its shape. Continue with the rest of the cookies.
