The place didn't look to different from what Dante remembered from his previous trip. Granted that during his brief stay on the island it had been more or less decimated but still he kind of remembered it.
Regardless of whoever had sent the folders to Nero was in Fortuna or not Dante had hoped that Kyrie wasn't so grief stricken as to announce her presence there.
He had relented on keeping as low of a profile this time around as he could. Originally that had been his plan before but hadn't exactly worked out when he sensed the devils nest that had been the opera house.
Over his coat he wore a brown cloak that all of the residents of Fortuna wore from he had observed in his go around. It did make it easier to hide his appearance that was for sure.
As far as he could tell the island seemed abandoned but who knew maybe they were having some weird holy day or something along those lines.
Quickly his eyes scanned the area taking it all in around him. Vaguely he could remember how to get to the underground tunnels and knew it was a very round about way of doing it.
'This should be fun.' He thought to himself sighing. He pulled back the hood from his cloak reaching out with his energy.
He turned around heading towards the port vaguely remembering the way.
Kyrie walked into the inn searching for any sign of life and finding it as empty as the rest of the buildings. Where was everyone? It seemed as if everything had been left as if the residents were expecting to return.
She walked around the back of the desk and went through the drawers and cabinets searching for any type of clue that may give her a lead.
As she was knelt down behind the counter she heard the door open followed by booted footfalls. Carefully Kyrie reached for Red Rose grasping its grip and pulled back the safety slowly.
She held her breath listening to the other that had entered who ever they were. Quickly she stood cocking her pistol only to with draw it.
"Nero." She said holstering her gun.
"Well hello to you too Kyrie." He retorted. "Geez."
"I thought you weren't coming." Kyrie said walking around the desk.
"Yeah about that..." He said smirking. "I went home, told Patty what was going on and asked her if I had done the right thing by staying with her and Nina as opposed to going with you."
"What did she say?" She questioned.
"She yelled at me, told me I was an idiot and that I needed to come back here to be with you." He replied. Kyrie shook her head giving an amused sigh.
"Have you come across anyone?" She asked.
"No. I went down to the port and found a bunch of reports." Nero said. "Last year there was an alleged mining accident that set off an explosion. Everyone was evacuated."
"So this was a waste of time." She said softly walking past Nero and out the door. She took a deep breath taking in the salty air around her.
"It's strange that the place where we grew up seems so foreign now, if that makes any sense." Nero commented.
"Yes, yes it does." She said staring down the empty street. "It's kind of strange being back here, the two of us."
"Yeah I can honestly say I didn't think that would ever happen again." He agreed. "A lot of memories."
"Too many." Kyrie whispered.
"What ever happened to your necklace?" Nero asked suddenly.
"The day I left I tossed it in the ocean." She said. "I immediately regretted it. I didn't ever really want to do it it just seemed like what I should do. I shouldn't have. Sorry."
"No. You have no reason to be." He stated running his left hand through his hair. "It's not your fault. It's this frigin' place...these people were out to destroy us, our relationship...our happiness...our family."
"We are family. Just not in any way we imagined." Kyrie replied with a slight smirk. "Nero, let's go visit our son."
She turned towards him grabbing his hand the way he remembered she used too. He gave a slight nod entwining his fingers with hers.
Dante back tracked fairly quickly when he realized that there was no going any further. It seemed as if half the island had been blown off the map leaving craters in its wake.
He came to stop behind a rusty wrought iron gate where he hid himself slightly behind a stone pillar. From his vantage point he could see Nero and Kyrie kneeling on the ground in front of a small stone.
They were quiet as they simply sat next to each other holding hands until Nero leaned forward bringing his human hand to his face as he let out a wrenching sob.
"I should have protected you both." He replied. "All I ever wanted was to protect you."
"I know Nero, I know." Kyrie soothed wrapping her arm around his shoulders. "I should've waited for you, I should've known you would come back."
"Maybe this is how things were supposed to be all along." Nero said. "I'm happy."
"I am too." She replied.
"Whatever comes from any of this, I want you to know that in whatever way Patty and I can help we will." He stated. "Hell, just from the little bit that I told her she's already offering to be a surrogate mother."
"Thank you Nero." Kyrie said. "We're lucky to have you guys." Nero gave a nod wiping his face. Dante quickly moved completely out of sight feeling guilty for being privy to such a private moment for the two but the damage was already done.
He made his way to the opera house and sat on the fountain staring at the setting sun. It was peaceful there if nothing else, especially with the fanatical cult gone.
"Glad to see you could make it old man." Nero joked as he and Kyrie approached.
"Like you doubted I wouldn't show?" He asked in his faux show off way.
"Yeah, no dice though." Nero replied. "Everyone's gone."
"Well it may have to do with the fact that half the island was blown to hell." He said.
"I didn't make it that far. Guess there's really no sense in staying here then if there's nothing left to investigate." Nero replied.
"So you mad at me for coming?" Dante asked after Nero had made his exit.
"No baby, I'm not mad at you." Kyrie said with a sigh. She glanced around and swallowed the lump that was in her throat. "This is where you and I first met."
"Yeah. I remember." He said. "While the kid was taking care of the statue..."
"You asked me if I was alright." Kyrie finished his sentence. Dante closed the gap between them slightly so he was standing in front of his wife.
"Are you alright?" He asked concern etching his features.
"I want to go home Dante." She said wrapping her arms around his torso and buried her face into the fabric of his jacket inhaling deeply. He always smelled of leather, gun powder and a slight hint of alcohol...it was just his unique scent that made her feel safe.
Dante wound his arms around her before picking her up and carrying her away.
