NICO
Thalia and I have been dating for about two months now. Openly together for about half that time. It was extremely awkward when we told Jason who decided to give me the stereotypical "break my sister's heart and I'll break your face," talk even though he knows full well I wouldn't do anything to hurt Thalia, because if I did she'd hurt me.
And I don't need that evil in my life.
The only thing more embarrassing than that conversation was when Thalia told the whole camp.
I'm eating breakfast at the Hades table with Hazel sitting across from me. We were talking about me visiting the Romans the next time we see each other.
"Nico!" I hear my beautiful girlfriend call out.
I turn around to greet her with a, "Good morning, Pinecone Face."
She was not having that apparently. Next thing I know she is sitting on my lap and our lips are attached. When she finally stands up I'm sitting there blinking like an idiot and she sounds off with a, "Good morning, Corpse Breath." She smiles widely and right as someone opens their mouth to ask the question that is buzzing in everyone's mind, Thalia interrupts.
"Before you ask, yes. Now continue with your lives." She gives me a peck on the cheek, gives a quick wave to Hazel and then proceeds to get her food and sit down at the Zeus table with Jason who I see roll his eyes affectionately at her.
I turn back around to face Hazel, who is furiously fanning her face, a habit from the era we were once a part of, a long time ago.
"Well, that happened," I say and continue eating my breakfast, feeling the eyes of my peers on both me and Thalia.
Turns out those British pains-in-the-ass are actually pretty cool to hang out with and we actually made fast friends. Which may have only been because Brandi followed me around demanding my friendship for three weeks while Amber followed her around bored. Thalia was still fending off Aiden who increasingly made his presence known.
I'm so close to hurting that kid it isn't even funny anymore.
At first, it seemed like a hero-crush, you know, worshiping-the-ground-she-walks kind of thing. Then, he said the voices in his head were telling him to and that's when it shifted to creepy. He started out only following her when she crossed his path, but soon I would take Thalia on a date and see him hiding in the distance, cloaked in shadow, like he was mimicking my previous methods of remaining hidden.
Right now I was out shopping with the sea brats, helping watch Maddie and Bree while Sarah and Brad would try clothes on.
Sarah had become something like a sister to me. She understood my taste in clothing and music and was easy to hang around for extended periods of time. She pretty much walked me through asking Thalia out and planning our first date. Great girl.
Brad was like a bro. An all-around stand-up guy. He was fun to train with because he was one of the only people who could keep up with my sword skills and my powers. The only other people who could are Thalia and Percy.
"How do I look?" Sarah comes out of the changing room and twirls in her outfit. She was wearing a dark purple crop top and high-waisted midnight black jeans with combat boots.
"Where's your shirt?" Brad immediately took on the role of protective older brother while I took my jacket off and lobbed it at her.
She laughed and rolled her eyes as she threw the jacket back, "I'll wear what I want, thanks."
We both gave her a look.
She rolled her eyes again, "Maddie, Bree ready to go find some new clothes?" Our attention was immediately ripped away from her and to the two squealing children running away from us.
After we finished shopping, we were attacked at the park by some empousai, who were particularly angry after Brad commented on the state of their makeup. We made quick work of it and returned to camp.
We were met with quite the surprise.
"Fight! Fight! Fight!" Is what we were greeted with as the mass of campers were crowded around two people in the center. Chiron was desperately trying to get to the campers in the middle but was making no progress, they were too worked up. Sarah and Brad grabbed Maddie and Bree and led them away with a, "Let's go practice using your powers by the beach, yeah?"
I shoved my way through the crowd with most people taking the hint and moving aside.
In the center of the ring was a very heated, and very menacing Thalia beating up a slightly terrified Aiden who was using magic to stop some of her blows, but not all of them. I could see Piper desperately trying to get the crowd to leave, but to no avail.
The invisible barrier around Aiden broke as Thalia brought her spear out and swung it, crackling with electricity.
"Thals!" I yelled, but if she could hear me she showed no signs.
Aiden was desperately muttering spells under his breath to keep her at bay.
"Aiden! What the hell did you do!" I yelled at him.
I did nothing. Thalia and the campers are under the influence of a Ferocity spell. I was trying to undo it when Thalia started attacking me.
"Are you in my mind?!" I yelled slightly terrified.
Yes. I need you to restrain Thalia, the spell feeds off the energy of the people around her and she gets worse the rowdier they get. I can't fix her and defend myself at the same time.
I thought about not helping and then decided it was probably the best course of action. However, in my head I figured I would just step in and hold her back while she still tried to kill Aiden.
Yeah...Not what happened.
The second I stepped into the circle Thalia's attention went from Aiden to me and she charged. I barely had time to bring out my Stygian iron sword before she swung her spear at me.
Out of the corner of my eye I could see Aiden arranging these stones in a circle, but that's all I glimpsed because Thalia continue to strike at speeds that shouldn't be possible. I couldn't focus on anything, but her.
Get her into the stone circle. I'll handle the rest.
I circle around until Thalia's back is facing the stone ring and then I tackle her into the ring before jumping out of it. She lunged after me, but seemed to be trapped inside the circle.
Aiden then began chanting in some ancient language. I made out a couple of Greek and Latin words. Words that made no sense by themselves.
"Fire." "Stone." "Eclipse." "Shadows." "Sun." "Pit." "Rage." "Glass." "Lightning." "Goat." By themselves absolute nonsense, but I guess it worked with whatever else he was saying because Thalia immediately calmed down and the campers around us began shaking their heads, some were walking around in a daze.
"Can someone explain to me, what the hell just happened?" Thalia banged her fist on the barrier.
"Yeah, I'll explain everything." Aiden said, out loud, thankfully.
Chiron thanked him before letting him know to meet him at the Big House after dinner to give his report.
Aiden moved one of the rocks out of the circle and the barrier dissipated and Thalia stepped out of the ring.
I was about to ask Aiden for details, but at that moment, his nose began bleeding profusely.
Thalia said rather pointedly, "Your nose is bleeding."
Aiden reached up and touched the blood and said, "Huh," before collapsing on the ground.
"I got him," I say as I picked him up over my shoulder. Thalia walks with me to the infirmary and stays with him while I go talk to Chiron.
Chiron comes with me to the infirmary where Thalia and Aiden, now wide awake, are in the middle of an argument.
"You could at least say thank you, instead of being angry!" He shouts at her.
"You have been stalking me since you arrived at this camp, dammit! The only reason I attacked you was because you were the closest one to me!" She was gripping the back of a chair so tightly her knuckles turned white.
I decided to come up behind her wrap my arms around her waist soothingly. She relaxed only slightly while Aiden leaned back in the infirmary bed and huffed in annoyance.
Chiron decided to step in, "Aiden tell me what happened."
"I was following Thalia like usual," Right, because that's not creepy, "She was walking and Lou Ellen came up to her with a weird look on her face and blew some powder in her face before turning around and leaving."
"I kept watching and suddenly Thalia whirled around at me and attacked me, I only barely was able to throw up a shield. The crowd came from nowhere and I was worried she'd attack them, but she was entirely focused on me and out for blood. You know the rest after that."
"You said it was a Ferocity spell? What is that?" I asked, my chin on Thalia's shoulder.
"Just as the name suggests," he explains, "Whoever inhales the powder becomes beast-like, a killer acting on instinct alone. It tends to draw a crowd and the spell feeds off of the energy around it to continue the effect. It's a dangerous spell, and Lou would never use it unless she was in a bind. She'd definitely never use it on a camper. Unless..." he trails off in concentration.
We all watched him critically, "Unless what?" Thalia huffed, clearly annoyed.
He seemed to be having a sort of internal struggle.
He suddenly sits up like he had an epiphany, "It's all connected." He says cryptically.
Chiron raises an eyebrow at him, "Please, child. Enlighten us."
Aiden points at Thalia, "You're gonna think I'm crazy, but the Fates wanted us to meet."
None of us were following, but we let him roll with it.
"Think about it, what kind of coincidence would it be that the day Thalia and Nico save me, Thalia decides to leave the Hunt, not only that, but falls in love with Nico Di Angelo of all people, no offense."
"Keep talking." I grunt in response.
He continues, "What sort of coincidence would it be that I am a son of Hecate, Goddess of Crossroads, and magic, a powerful goddess. What kind of coincidence would it be that the very next day, not one, but two daughters of Athena were discovered and brought to camp. Twins at that."
"This sounds like some Illuminati conspiracy theory." Thalia comments.
"I'll sell you with this last connection. Ready?" He's getting increasingly excited as he talks. "What are the freaking chances that the strange voices floating around in my head would tell me to keep an eye on Thalia because she's in danger? Huh? What are the chances that I was the only one in the spell's effect radius who was not affected by the spell? That spell is designed to make people run towards the ferocious one. Easy targets, easy kills."
I begin to see where he's going with this. Except for one thing.
"How do the twins play into this?" I ask, trying to find the hole in his logic.
"Well, because they weren't affected by the spell either and they were within the effect range." He says, matter-of-factly.
"And how do you know this?" The next question comes from Thalia, "Weren't you a little occupied with my overwhelming need to kill you?"
I was actually thinking along the same lines. If he was focused on Thalia the entire time before and after being attacked, how would he know they weren't affected? I fought Thalia in that state and it is very difficult to focus on anything else.
"It's because we were following Thalia as well." Everyone turned around as the sound of a British girl filled the room. It was Amber who spoke.
"Whatever voices are speaking in Aiden's head are in ours as well," Brandi explains.
Amber arches one eyebrow, "Although we are far more subtle about following her than you are." He grins sheepishly at that, and rubs the back of his neck.
Just then the dinner horn sounds.
"We'll continue this discussion later." Chiron says and leaves.
Brandi and Amber did some weird twin synchronization and said at the same time,
"The voices have gone silent." They exchanged a glance and proceeded to flee the scene leaving me, Thalia, and Aiden in the infirmary.
"Well, that was only slightly disturbing." I say as I collapse in an armchair next to Aiden's bed.
"Thank you." It was so quiet I almost didn't catch it.
Aiden's head snaps up from where it was previously hanging down, staring awkwardly into his lap.
"What?" He says.
Thalia crosses her arms, "I'm not gonna repeat myself."
She half-storms to the door, but is stopped by Aiden's voice, "Hey, Thalia?" His voice wavered a little.
"Yeah?" She says without looking back.
"I'm sorry for following you. When the voices said you were in danger and I had to protect you. I just wanted to repay you for saving my life that day."
"Well," She says, "Now we're even." Then she leaves to go to dinner.
That night as Thalia is snuggled up to me laying her head on my chest, I think about the events of today.
What does this mean for us? What is the deal with the twins and Aiden? What earth-shaking danger has Thalia been pulled into?
My head is buzzing with unanswered questions. It seems the things in my life that are stable are vastly outnumbered by the things that are not.
"Hey, Nico?" Thalia mumbles quietly.
"Yeah?" I answer quietly, absentmindedly running my fingers through her hair.
"Stop worrying about the future, and go to sleep."
I chuckle softly at that, Thalia lives in the now, no time for worrying. I don't know if that's possible for me.
But, in my demigod life of uncertainty, of one thing I will always be certain.
"I love you, Thalia."
