A/N: So thank you for the reviews I've gotten about my author's note guys, it means a lot. I'm sorry for not updating lately. So in case any of you haven't noticed yet, I've gone back and deleted Prim from the story, saying she's at home instead of here with Katniss because I noticed that I wasn't really writing or focusing about her. I just got a really big cut on the back of my heel from scraping it against a drawer. Ow. Oops. So I got a review saying that my story is good, I just need to make it more exciting. So that's what I'm trying to accomplish in this chapter. Hope you like it. :)
Chapter 30- The Accident
Katniss POV-
Today was the last day of Christmas vacation. Tomorrow classes would start up again.
Outside was covered with snow at least 2-3 feet high everywhere you looked. I didn't really have anything planned for the day, so I just rolled over in my bed, grabbed my book 'The City of Glass' and continued reading from where I left off last night.
As I read, I found my thoughts drifting off to my father. Nobody had mentioned what had happened on Christmas day, but I could tell that they were all thinking about it by the way they looked at me- all except Gale. Their eyes would give them away. Always filled with sadness and guilt when looking my way. I tried to shrug them off, but most of the time I ended up thinking about him. How we would always go to the lake by our house and he'd teach me to swim. How he'd teach me to sing. I always wanted to be able to sing like him: The birds would always stop to listen for him. My father had the voice of an angel.
I mentally shook myself away from my thoughts and continued reading my book.
About a half hour later, I heard a soft knocking on my door.
"Come in!" I called out, closing my book.
I heard the door open and turned my head to find Peeta's back to me as he closed it again.
Sitting up and turning myself around to face him, I said "Hey."
The door clicked shut and Peeta turned to make his way towards me. "Hey," he replied as he sat down on the end of my bed. Peeta then chuckled. "Still in bed at 11:30?"
I gaped at him. "It's already 11:30?"
"Yeah, I was waiting for you at breakfast, but you never came down so I decided to come up."
I frowned, "Sorry. I only got up about a half hour ago."
Peeta nodded, "Anyways, we're going out today, so get dressed. I'll be outside your door."
As Peeta made his way back to the door, I called out, "So I don't even get a say in these plans?"
"Nope!" Peeta yelled back, popping the 'p' as he shut the door.
Sighing, I threw back my covers, grabbed some clothes and headed for the bathroom.
I closed the door behind me and headed over to Peeta. He smiled down at me as I reached and slung his arm around my waist.
"So where are we going?" I asked him.
Peeta clicked his tongue. "Ah, now that would be telling wouldn't it?"
"Peeta!" I shoved his shoulder playfully.
"Katniss!" His voice hinted slight mockery.
I chuckled quietly to myself and continued walking as I leaned in to Peeta. Not too much later, Peeta dropped his hand from my waist and stepped behind me, throwing his hands in front of my face and covering my eyes. Shivers crawled up and down my spine as Peeta whispered in my ear, "Just keep going."
Peeta then guided me with his words, telling me to go right left, back, up or down. I felt his hands leave my eyes and the darkness disappeared. It's a good thing I wore a jacket and boots, because we were outside in the snow. I turned around to say something to Peeta, but he was no where in sight.
"Peeta?" I called out, scanning the area. No reply. "Peeta?" I tried again.
There was a whooshing sound from somewhere to my left and I spun around to face the direction it came from, just in time to get hit by a snowball in the middle of my face.
"Peeta!" I yelled and bent down, hurriedly creating a snowball of my own and rolling it between my cold hands as I searched for the blonde boy.
I found him crouching behind and a bush, hoping I wouldn't see him. Quietly, I tip-toed over the snow so I was standing behind him. Bending down, I tapped his shoulder, making him jump slightly. He jumped to his feet and spun to face me, just as soon as I threw the snow ball. It landed in his face. My hand flew to my face to cover up my laughter and I ran away.
Just as Peeta drew his arm back and aimed for his next throw- we heard a scream.
"Ahhh!"
My eyes flew wide, and the two of us dropped our snowballs, running towards the direction of the scream.
We turned a corner and found Olivia laying on the ground, holding her ankle.
"Olivia!" I shouted, running to her aid. "What happened?"
Olivia's face was scrunched up in pain and she winced when I gently touched her ankle.
"I was just heading over to meet Gale, but I- I didn't see the ice. I think I broke my ankle."
I looked to Peeta for help. He was at Olivia's other side and had his hand resting softly on her shoulder.
At the same time, both of us lifted Olivia up from beneath her arms, and slung them around our shoulders.
Together, Peeta and I, along with a limping Olivia, made our way to the infirmary.
"Hello m'dears. How may I help you?" The sweet sing-song voice of Nurse Hazel wavered out into the deserted hallway.
"We think our friend broke her ankle." Peeta's voice sounded firm, yet gentle.
"Oh my. Well come on in dearies." Nurse Hazel welcomed us in and prepared a bed for Olivia. "Lay down here, Sweetheart. And I'll go get some ice." Then she scurried in to her office.
With the help of Peeta, we managed to get Olivia on the bed comfortably, and rested her foot on a couple of pillows. The nurse came back a couple minutes later and handed the bag of ice to Peeta.
"If you wouldn't mind holding this against her ankle, sweety. Very much appreciated."
"I'll go call Gale for you Olivia," I stated softly, pulling out my phone.
Olivia nodded in thanks and I turned to exit the room.
Leaning up against the hallway wall, I dialed Gale's number.
Ring, ring, ring.
"Hello?" Gale's voice rang out through the speaker.
"Hey, Gale."
"Oh, hey Catnip. What's up?"
I glanced back at Olivia and Peeta through the window. "We need you to come down to the infirmary, Olivia had an accident."
Gale's voice sounded worried. "What happened?"
"She slipped on some ice and we think she broke her ankle," I explained quickly.
"I'll be right down." Then the phone went down and I entered the room again.
Within minutes, Gale was at his girlfriend's side, stroking her hair and whispering soothing words into her ear as she lay her head against his chest.
I smiled to myself at the thought that Gale finally found somebody. Somebody who cared for him, who loved him, who'd never lived him. Even though we're still in school, I have no doubt that Gale and Olivia will end up marrying each other one day. They're the perfect couple.
I felt Peeta's arm wrap around my shoulders and I leaned into him, wrapping my own around his waist. I snuggled my head into his neck and he placed a feather light kiss a top my hair.
"Calm on. She's in good hands. Let's head back up stairs." Peeta's voiced whispered into my ear.
I smiled once more as I watched Gale placed a quick kiss on Olivia's lips and lay on the bed beside her.
Hand-in-hand, Peeta and I made our way to his dorm.
Once there, we sat on the couch together and just watched the T.V. in a comfortable silence.
I lay across the couch with my head in Peeta's lap and his hand resting protectively on my waist.
My eyes kept drooping ever so slightly to a close, and soon enough, I was drifting off in to my own little world of fantasies.
So yeah, sorry for the long wait. I know its been like a month and a half since we all had an actual chapter. I've just had a bit of Writer's Block recently.
Please review!
