A/N: It feels so good to be back and writing again! I have been super swamped with homework lately and I've just been so busy with other activities and family things that I just haven't had the time to write! You guys have no idea how many times I had to resist the urge to write for you all! Super sorry that it took this long for me to update, but school comes first! I've also been reading lots, of course. I've recently read Cinder and Scarlet (from the Lunar Chronicles), and have started on Cress but have taken a break to read City of Heavenly Fire right now! (Any fellow Shadowhunters out there?) I've also read The Fault in Our Stars, so excited to see the movie since I haven't had the chance yet! I can't wait. Anyways, enjoy!

Chapter 33- A Night of Memories

Peeta POV-

A night of memories. That's what I had planned for tonight. For Katniss and I. I wanted to make tonight a memorable night for Katniss. After all, we only get one shot at Prom, and I wanted to make it a good one.

I'd asked her to Prom a couple of months back...

Flashback:

"Is she there? Is it ready?"

"Yeah man, she's there. Everything's ready," Finnick nodded.

I took a deep breath. "Let's not waste time then."

Pushing open the doors, I exited the men's bathroom at Tony's Palace where I had made a reservation for Katniss and I to have dinner tonight, where I would pop the question.

I found her twiddling her fingers at the table and she smiled when she saw me.

As I sat down opposite her, she asked me, "So what's all this about?"

"What, I can't take my beautiful girlfriend out on a date?" I asked, innocently, quirking an eyebrow.

Katniss pulled back from the table slightly and blushed. "I didn't say that..."

I smiled.

Halfway through our meal, Katniss stopped. Immediately, I put down my fork and looked at her as she paused, mid chew and a questionable expression crossed her face. She placed her fork down on the table slowly and reached towards the middle of her plate. When she pulled her hand back, she held a small folded up piece of paper.

While she was unfolding the paper, she kept giving me curious glances, but didn't say a word.

Finally, the paper was unfolded and I watched anxiously as her eyes danced across the paper. Her mouth fell agape, but before she could look back up, confetti popped into the air between us, falling on top of our food and I quickly looked back to see Finnick standing their with the confetti popper, smiling.

He looked at me. "Too soon?"

I laughed and shook my head. "No, no. Perfect timing."

Turning back to face Katniss, I saw a big grin spread across her face and she nodded. "Yes, I'll go to Prom with you."

End of Flashback

I'd never seen Katniss so ecstatic before, and the thought that I had been the one to make her that happy... it was one of the best feelings in the world.

I got back to the dorm about an hour ago from buying a white orchid corsage to give to Katniss when I pick her up later this evening.

A creak was heard from across the room and I looked up from my seat on the couch to see Gale and Finnick entering the room. The two of them held bouquets of flowers; Finnick with orange tulips and Gale with yellow roses. I had bought Katniss some blue peonies earlier along with the corsage.

Gale was giving Finnick a knowing look and I knew exactly what he was thinking. Taking my time, I stood up and wandered over to Finnick. I stretched my arms for a bit, yawned, and smirked at him.

"So... Finnick. My man." I clapped him on the shoulder, and he gave a slight smile.

I tilted my head a little and quirked an eyebrow. Taking an exaggerated deep breath first, I asked him, "Got any plans for Prom tonight?"

Scratching his neck, Finnicl coughed and drew his eyebrows together, throwing his hand in the air and resting it on the back of his head. "Well... yeah, you know. Of course I do. I mean... why wouldn't I?"

Gale had placed down his bouquet and now rested his hands on his hips. "Does the name of this lucky girl happen to start with a... Oh, I don't know- maybe a 'C'.?" His eyebrow raised.

Finnick sputtered. "Now, what on Earth would give you that idea?"

Gale and I stared at him.

"Fine." He sighed. "I asked Clove to Prom a couple of weeks ago."

"And there it is." I clapped his shoulder once more, before spinning on my heel and returning to my place on the couch.

Clove POV-

Flicking the T.V. off, I yawned and stretched my arms wide.

"Careful, you'll catch flies if you don't close that big mouth of yours."

I let my arms fall and watched Glimmer as she pulled out a water bottle from the fridge, taking a sip. "Haha."

Twisting the cap back on the bottle, she swallowed and shrugged her shoulders. "You never know. It could happen."

Rolling my eyes, I made my way over to my closet and took a look at my dress.

"So you and Finn, huh? I knew it."

I spun around swiftly. "And what is that supposed to mean?"

It was Glimmer's turn to roll her eyes. "You two have been goggling over each other for years. It's about time something happened. Even if it has taken forever."

Shaking my head, I didn't respond as I took another once over of my dress. It was a strapless dress with a sweetheart bodice filled with mixed dazzling colours of blue, green and white. A black skirt flowed loosely from the empire waist to the floor.

"Your dress is gorgeous Clove." Glimmer appeared behind me, taking a look at my Prom dress for the first time.

I noticed then that I'd forgotten to show it to her last week after Katnissa and I had gone shopping together.

My cheeks flushed ever so lightly and I replied, "Thanks. Kat helped me pick it out."

Smiling, Glimmer clapped her hands together and said, "I can't wait to see all the girls in their dresses. Everyone's going to look beautiful."

"Speaking of which, how long till we have to meet everyone?"

Glimmer whirled around and checked her phone which had been laying on her bed. "It's 3:07. So two hours and fifty-three minutes in counting."

I nodded. "Let's start getting ready then."

Katniss POV-

"Oh Katniss. You look absolutely stunning!"

I twirled once more in the mirror, watching as the tips of my dress skirted the floor as it flounced around. It had spaghetti straps attached to a sweetheart neckline. About three inches below the bust was a thick, solid, light blue band racing all the way around my chest. The bust area was a lighter version of the band with ruffles and below the band was a skirt flowing freely to the floor that was the same blue, but fading to white the closer and closer it got to the bottom. "You really think so Madge?"

"Definitely. Peeta's jaw will be landing strip for flies when he sees you."

My chest bounced up and down as I laughed.

I spun around, enjoying the feeling of my dress flying through the air, and looked at Madge with a thoughtful look, my arms crossed over my chest. "You don't look bad yourself."

Madge squeezed her eyes shut as a big grin crossed her face and she curtsied. "Why thank you."

I shook my head. "Here, let me do your hair."

At that, Madge straightened up immediately and gave me a hard, serious look. "Only if I get to do yours." She raised an eyebrow.

"Sure."

I ended up curling Madge's hair and twisting a piece back, keeping it in place with a white flower clip. Her dress was a pansy purple and also a sweetheart neckline, but strapless. The bodice had a beautiful design of shimmering jewel accents and below the bust it cascaded to her mid thigh in ruffles. The skirt of the dress ended at her mid-thigh in the front and started lowering closer to the floor as it went around the right side, finally reaching the floor behind her calf.

After checking out her hair, Madge sat me down in the chair and started to work on my own.

"So how are you and Peeta doing?"

"We're actually doing great. I think we've gotten closer after what happened with his mother a few months ago. I feel like now that she's accepted me, we can do more things; like doing things with his family and not just my own," I explained.

I saw Madge nod her head in the mirror. "I agree. Since February you guys have seemed much closer than before."

"How about you and Cato?"

Madge smiled. "We're doing good. Honestly, when I first started attending the school a few years ago, I never expected to find a guy like Cato; Someone who could put a smile on my face as easily as just entering the room. I didn't think it was possible to find a guy like that. And when I saw you and Peeta together, how you guys are always happier with the other around, I just kept wishing that I could find my own Peeta. Then after Halloween when Cato and I had gone through the Haunted Houses together, I started to think: What if it was him? What If Cato was the one for me?" Madge sighed. "And after Halloween he kept hanging around me and I found myself thinking, is this really happening? I wasn't sure if he was just there, or if there had been a reason behind his sudden change of behavior. And then when he asked me out... I just felt so happy. You know?"

I nodded. "I know. I felt that way when Peeta asked me out."

Madge sighed heavily. "I'm so happy to have finally let that out. I've been keeping that all to myself for seven months."

I laughed.

My hair was finished not too long after. Madge had curled my it and done a waterfall braid across the back of my head; Pretty, but not too complicated.

We then applied our makeup and found it to be 4:48. We had twelve minutes.

Madge and I both turned to face the other.

"Are you ready Katniss?"

I took a deep breath. "Definitely."

Then with smiles on our faces, the two of us exited our dorm and headed down to the foyer.

Since we left a couple minutes early, Madge and I were the first to arrive. Instead of standing the two of us decided to sit and wait on the lounge chairs. We watched as couples passed by us all dressed up and smiling.

As I grabbed a strand up my curled hair, I started to twirl it around my fingers when Peeta arrived with Gale and Finnick. Peeta had a hand behind his back and when they entered the foyer and I saw him immediately scan the room with his eyes.

Standing up, I smoothed out the creases in my dress and walked over to the three of them with Madge in tail. Once we reached them, a smile broke out on to Peeta's face and he immediately grabbed my hand, dragging me away from the others.

"You look beautiful, Katniss." Peeta looked at me with love in his eyes once we were alone across the room.

Blushing, I replied, "You don't look too bad yourself." He laughed and I lightly shoved his shoulder.

Bringing his hand out from behind his back, Peeta presented me with a bouquet of beautiful blue peonies. "For the lovely lady."

Laughing, I accepted the flower and thanked him.

Peeta then reached into his pocket and brought out a black box. Opening the lid, he took out another flower- No, not a flower. A white orchid corsage. He gave me a smile before grabbing my hand and sliding it gracefully onto my wrist. Swiftly, he planted a quick brush of a kiss onto my hand.

We sat together on one of the couches as the five of us waited for the others to arrive. Peeta held my hand in both of his and the smile he was wearing never left his face. My heart swelled.

About ten minutes later, we were all together. Cato was with Madge; I with Peeta; Clove with Finnick; Gale with Olivia; Beetee with Leevy; Annie with Maverick; Glimmer with Marvel; Johanna and Delly were by themselves but will be hanging with people in the group and other friends throughout the night.

Couple by couple, we walked through the school and into the large gym.

Our Prom's theme was 'Starry Night'.

The gym seemed dark as we neared it. As we entered the room, we noticed it was indeed dark, but there were twinkling lights and stars hanging everywhere. Along the walls were twinkle lights, weaving in and out of fake trees; Hanging from the ceiling were many glowing stars, big and small alike; Surrounding the stage were a couple trees and the ground on and around it was covered in fake grass; Along the edges of the gym, the refreshments tables were draped with dark blue table cloths and had stars all throughout it; Hanging from the middle of the ceiling was a disco ball and in the middle of the gym was a waterfall, but instead of water coming out from the middle, it was dark blue and white confetti, falling back into the waterfall and the floor surrounding it. There was a sign in front of it saying that you could donate any on hand coinage and it would be sent to the local charity the next morning.

Stage lights were everywhere, providing colourful lights such as pink, green, blue and purple. Up on the stage a band from students at our school who called themselves 'The Music Men', ( they were still trying to decide on a name), were playing a calming song of their's and couples around the room were dancing.

I had quickly put my flowers into a vase in my room on the way to the gym and now my hands were free as Peeta grabbed them lightly in his own, pulling me gently along with him to the middle of the room.

Letting go of my hands, he turned to face me and placed a foot forward, bending down slightly and produced his hand to me. "May I have this dance?"

Placing a hand over my heart dramatically, I placed the other in his own extended one. "You may."

I laughed as Peeta smiled, gripped my hand and stood straight. He placed both of his hands on my waist and I looped mine around his neck as we began our first dance of the night.

Gale POV-

My hands were both resting gently on Olivia's waist, hers attached around my neck. Currently, we were dancing to a slow song and it was a nice feeling to just sway to a calming song.

Looking over to the middle of the gym, I caught a glimpse of Katniss resting her head on Peeta's shoulder with his arms secured around her waist as he rested his own head on her shoulder, before they were blocked from view by another dancing couple.

I remember at the beginning of the year when I used to think that I had a crush on Katniss. I tried so hard to get her to see me in a different way, but nothing ever worked. And then there was that stupid fight in the cafeteria that got her mad at me for a few weeks. After Olivia came and I started to have feelings for her, I realized that I never had a crush on Katniss. Never. I love her. I do. But as a sister. I was just so caught up in wanting to spend more time with Katniss before we left for school that I thought the wrong thing. I didn't love her. I just didn't want her to drift away from me at this school and I was so protective of her that I didn't want her with any guys. That's the real reason behind my participation at the cafeteria; I don't want to see her heart get broken. I was a bit edgy about Peeta at first, especially after the whole Cashmere incident, but after they patched things up, I came to realize that she won't get her heart broken- not when she's with Peeta.

He loves her. He truly does. I can see it in his eyes whenever he looks at her. The happiness in them when she enters the room and the sadness when she leaves or she isn't there or he doesn't know where she is. I can hear it in his voice whenever he talks about her; Like she's his whole world and there's no one else but her. I could see it during their temporary time apart when he would stare at her during class with love and sadness, and his determination to get her back. I remember when he asked me if he could write a letter to her from 'me'. I'd thought about it for a moment, but after I saw the desperation and hope in his eyes... I noticed that he would never betray Katniss, especially in the way that she thought he had.

Katniss will always be my un-related sister.

Shaking the thoughts from my head, I leaned my head down to kiss Olivia lightly. It was quick and gentle, but it still sent sparks into the air.

Olivia rested her head on my chest and I tightened my grip lightly on her waist as we continued to sway around the gym.

Cato POV-

As I poured some punch into two glasses for Madge and I, I smiled as I saw Finnick and Clove dancing with each other. I knew they would end up together.

Grasping both the cups, I made my way back across the gym to where Madge was sitting on a bench, chatting with Johanna and Delly. I handed her a glass and she smiled up at me before taking it and having a sip.

I took the empty spot next to her and slung my arm around her waist, trying not to spill my punch on my suit as I did so.

Madge was absolutely stunning tonight- well, she always is. I just feel so happy that I get to be the lucky guy to take this amazing girl to Prom. I couldn't ask for a better girlfriend.

"So Jo, you have your eye on anybody yet?" Madge questioned, leaning forward a little.

Johanna quickly scanned the room and thought for a moment. "Hmm..." She scrunched up her face a bit. "No." She shook her head a few times.

Madge looked around the room thoughtfully. "What about... Thresh?"

"No."

"Gloss?"

"Definitely not."

"Mitchell?"

"Nope."

Madge looked over at Johanna. "Huh. So are you going to die alone with thirty-seven cats?"

"Maybe."

Laughing, Madge rolled her eyes. She then set her punch glass aside and stood up, pulling me along with her.

"Let's dance."

We found a somewhat clear spot off to the right side of the gym and pumped our fists in the air, dancing crazily as an up-beat song began to play.

Madge accidentally hit somebody in the back of the head with her head. She gasped, her hands flying to her mouth and immediately apologized. "Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! That was a complete accident, I'm so sorry; Are you okay?"

The girl rubbed her head gently and laughed, waving her off with her hand. "Yeah, I'm fine. I've already hit two people in the head with my fist by accident."

Madge then let out a deep breath of relief. "Okay. Again, I'm so sorry."

The girl laughed it off, then turned around to continue dancing.

Face flushed, Madge looked at me and ran her hands over her face. "That was so embarrassing."

'Don't worry about it." I reached out and hugged her to me as the song ended and another slow song came on. Smirking at the girl before me, I grasped her waist and spun her to my chest so her back was to me and I held her crossed arms in my hands as we swayed.

Finnick POV-

Clove was resting her head against my chest with her arms around my neck as mine were secured around her waist and my head lay atop hers.

I never thought that this would happen. Me taking my best friend to Prom in a romantic way and not as 'just friends'. Never had it crossed my mind before. Never. Then we started attending this school with Glimmer, everything just seemed to change. I started to miss her more than usual when she wasn't hanging out with me; I started to search for her in the cafeteria and look for her at the beginning of the classes we shared; I always wanted to sit next to her. I had no clue at the time what was going on, and I never did until a few months ago when the guys started to makes jokes about us being together. I'd sat alone for a while one day and thought about it. I still hadn't been sure at the time, but then when Prom came along, I knew that I wanted to take Clove as my date. I just knew it.

We didn't talk for a while, just let our bodies be controlled by the music.

Once the song ended Clove excused herself to use the washroom and I headed over to the fountain in the middle of the room. Looking into it, I noticed that plenty of people had already tossed in some coins. I saw plenty of loonies and toonies, a lot of quarters and dimes, a few stray nickles and one lonely penny. Reaching into my own pocket, I grabbed four quarters and toonie, tossing them into the fountain before heading over to the punch table and pouring myself a glass. I also grabbed a brownie from the food table and ate it in three swift bites.

Gale reached the table and stood next to me as he poured himself a cup of punch.

"Where's Olivia?" I asked him.

"Washroom." He took a sip of his drink. "How about Clove?"

I nodded. "Washroom."

Gale shook his head and smirked. "Girls."

Peeta, Cato, Beetee Maverick and Marvel joined us then.

"Hello," said Beetee.

"Hey guys," I replied.

I locked eyes with Peeta. "Did she go to the washroom too?"

Peeta nodded. "Along with Johanna, Delly, Leevy, Glimmer, Annie and Madge."

"I knew it."

Peeta chuckled.

"So guys," Maverick started. "Graduation tomorrow."

"Yeah, good luck Peeta on your Valedictorian Speech," I said.

Peeta sighed and leaned against the table. "I'm going to try and memorize it more tomorrow morning before the ceremony."

"You'll do great man." Gale went over and clapped him on the shoulder.

Peeta huffed a sigh. "Thanks Gale." He smirked at him. "I'll do my best."

There was a collection of laughs from across the room and the seven of us swiveled our heads in said direction to find the girls exiting the washroom.

Peeta headed over to Katniss first and took her back onto the dance floor, followed by Maverick and Annie, then Beetee and Leevy, then Marvel and Glimmer, and lastly, Clove and I. Gale and Olivia were staying back for some refreshments.

I took Clove by the waist with one hand and dipped her suddenly. She yelped in surprise the started to laugh.

Then I did something unexpected.

I kissed her.

Marvel POV-

Glimmer and I were jumping like crazy to the beat of the music and laughing. The Music Men had left the stage a few songs ago and music was no being played through the speakers.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Peeta head over to the guy controlling the music; Probably requesting a song. I saw the guy nod and Peeta left the stage.

Turning back to face Glimmer, I caught her smiling up at me. "What?"

She shook her head, flushed. "Nothing."

Leaning down, I planted a soft kiss on her lips, before pulling back and spinning her.

Half way through the spin her hand slipped out of mine and she was spent spinning across the dance floor. Not too far away she stopped herself and gave me a look.

At first I was worried that she was mad, but then she started to laugh ad I couldn't help but laugh along with her.

Once Glimmer reached me again, the song changed.

"This song was requested by Peeta Mellark and goes out to Katniss Everdeen," the guy announced.

I could see Peeta and Katniss on the other side of the gym. Katniss' eyes were wide and she was looking at Peeta in disbelief.

All of a sudden 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perri started to play through the speakers. I was still looking at Katniss and witnessed the tears forming in her eyes as she threw her arms around Peeta. Maybe the song meant something to her?

I pulled Glimmer to me and hugged her gently as we swayed in circles.

I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

Glimmer rested her head on my shoulder and I hugged her tighter.

I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

One step closer
One step closer

Lifting her head, Glimmer gave me a swift, soft kiss on the cheek, before placing her head back down on my shoulder again.

A few minutes later, the song came to an end and we decided to go meet up with Johanna and Delly who were by the punch bowl.

Johanna POV-

"Who do think will Prom King and Queen, Jo?" Delly questioned, taking a bite of her macaroon bar

I thought for a moment, scanning my eyes around the room. "I don't know. It could be Kat and Peeta, or Glimmer and Marvel, or basically anyone. Everyone's got a chance right?"

Delly nodded. "Yeah, I suppose."

Just then, Glimmer and Marvel reached us and sat down.

"Hey guys," Glimmer stated.

"Hey," we replied.

A thought then came to my mind and I looked over at Marvel. "Do you mind if I steal your girlfriend away?"

Marvel eyed me. "Only if you're gentle with her."

Glimmer burst out laughing and hit him on the shoulder before we walked off to the dance floor.

Another up-beat was song was blasting through the room and Glimmer and I started to do crazy dancing. We did the shopping cart, the robot and the Egyptian before we couldn't help but laugh.

After a few songs, we headed back over to where Delly and Marvel were sitting, watching us with amused faces.

"That was probably the best thing I've seen all night," Delly stated, laughing.

Glimmer and I crossed our feet and bowed.

"Thank you," I said.

"We try," said Glimmer.

We all laughed.

Annie POV-

My curled hair skimmed the floor as my body was swept through the air in a dip. Maverick quickly pulled me back up to him and smiled.

Maverick was honestly the perfect boyfriend and I couldn't have asked for anyone better. I remember that day he had asked me out about a month and half ago when I had been with the rest of the group after lunch, talking about what we wanted to do for the day. He'd come up to us and asked if he could talk to me for a moment and after I witnessed Katniss giving me a look telling me to go, I'd gone with him. He hadn't taken me far; Just to a corner of the room, away from everyone else, so we were still within the sight of the group. He'd asked me how I was doing and I'd said I was doing fine. I hadn't been sure why he wanted to talk to me, but then he blurted out that he liked me.

I still remember the feeling of shock after that. I'd had a crush on him already for a few weeks but I didn't think he'd felt the same way. Then I told him that I liked him too and an enormous smile had broken out on to his face. He'd asked me if I was free that coming Friday night and to tease him I'd thought about it for a moment, even though I knew I didn't. Then I'd said I wasn't busy at all and he looked so relieved then asked me out on a date and I'd accepted immediately.

I've felt like the luckiest girl ever since. Especially since the day he asked to be his date to Prom. How could I say no?

"Attention everyone. Can I have your attention."

Maverick and I turned to face the stage where one of the members of the Prom committee was standing with an envelope in hand.

"Who's enjoying Prom so far?"

There was a collection of cheering throughout the gym.

"Anyways, now it's time to announce this year's Prom King and Queen!"

Everyone clapped.

The guy opened up the envelope and everybody was silent in anticipation. He pulled out a card and opened it.

"This year's Prom King and Queen are... Cato Ludwig and Madge Undersee!"

A loud cheer escaped my mouth and I clapped in applause.

A light shone on Cato and Madge, following them as they made their way up the steps to the stage. A girl from the committee entered the stage with two crowns and a sash in hand.

"Congratulations you two!" She announced cheerfully and walked over to them. She placed the bigger of the two crowns onto Cato's head before heading over to Madge and throwing the sash over her body and placing the other crown atop her head. The sash was white with sparkles and it stated, '2014 Prom Queen' in cursive writing.

"Now for the Prom King and Queen Dance!" The guy dimmed the lights and shone a single one in the middle of the room where the rest of the students were clearing a space.

Madge and Cato looked at each other before laughing and taking the other's hand, heading over to the middle of the room.

A slow song played and the two of them started to dance while everyone else watched. A minute into the song, the other students started to dance as well. Peeta and Katniss were dancing close to Madge and Cato; Johanna had grabbed the guy from the stage and was now dancing with him; Glimmer and Marvel were close to the back of the room dancing; Gale and Olivia were off to the left side of the room; Finnick and Clove were off the right side; Delly was laughing at Johanna as she drank some punch; And Maverick and I continued to dance where we were.

Katniss POV-

It was nearing the end of Prom and plenty of people had already left the gym. I was dancing with Peeta in the middle of the room. I looked up at him and smiled; He smiled back down at me.

"Thank you for a wonderful night Peeta."

"Anything for you Katniss."

All of us were now standing in the foyer, saying our goodbyes to each other for the night. Finnick and Clove seemed to be blushing, but neither would tell us why. Madge, Cato, Peeta and I were heading up to Madge and I's dorm.

We stopped outside the door and I kissed Peeta telling him I'd see him tomorrow before heading into the room with Madge who had said goodbye to Cato as well.

After I washed the makeup off my face, changed into my pyjamas, hanging my dress back in the closet and took apart my hair, I flopped onto my bed. "What a night."

"Best night ever," came Madge's voice from across the room.

"Definitely."

Noticing that it was already 1:23 in the morning, I said goodnight to Madge, crawled under the covers and drifted off to sleep. My dreams were full of dancing with Peeta and I couldn't have been happier that I got to go to Prom with him.
