Fall 1968

Maia hurried to meet her friends at the Quidditch Pitch before the match between her house and Hufflepuff started. She hardly ever got to see Andy or Bella anymore since they were both ahead of her in the school. Matches at the pitch and Hogsmeade visits had become the only times they were all together.

The fourth year found the two oldest Black sisters just as the whistle blew from the pitch and the match started. Bella was immediately on her feet cheering on Slytherin while Andy hollered from her seat. Maia was content to just try and follow the game and clapping enthusiastically whenever their house scored. Twenty minutes later, when the seekers spotted the snitch, Bella pulled both of the younger girls to their feet in excitement. The match was over not long afterwards, Slytherin winning by more than two hundred points.

"That was a great first match!" Bella exclaimed as the trio followed the crowd back to the school. "Even Malfoy played well today."

Maia shrugged. "He still's a rude arse," she said to her friends.

Andy nodded distractedly as a Hufflepuff waved at her. Bella laughed at the goofy smile her sister gave the fifth year boy across the crowd. She gently steered Maia away as he headed over. The sixth year grinned at her younger sister before turning to her friend. Maia was studying the ground as her face reddened.

"Hey, is something wrong?" Bella asked as they left the crowd.

Maia looked up startled. "No," she said quietly.

Bella looked around, seeing almost everyone had headed back into the school for lunch. Andy and Ted Tonks were still talking just outside the door and a few younger students were playing tag near the lake.

"How about we try riding a broom again tonight?" Bella suggested. She was met with a shrug for an answer. "Please?"

Maia glanced up again before sighing. "Alright."

oooOOOooo

Maia arrived at the pitch early and decided to wait in the stands. She was not there long before Bella walked onto the pitch with a broom that was definitely not a school broom. The fourth year waved to the ebony haired witch and started to walk down. The older girl made a motion for her to stay in the stands before mounting the broom and kicking off. She landed beside Maia a moment later.

"Guess who's broom this is," Bella told the fourth year as she held out the broom for inspection. It was one of the newest models from Cleansweep and was well taken care of. Maia immediately knew who the broom belonged to.

"Malfoy," she said deadpanned before laughing at her friend's audacity in stealing her future brother-in-law's broom. "Cissa is going to be so angry with you."

Bella just shrugged before getting on the broom again. She motioned for Maia to get on behind her. The brunette bit her lip before carefully climbing onto the broom and holding onto her friend tightly.

"On three," Bella instructed. "One, two, three!"

Both the students kicked off from the ground at nearly the same time. The broom, being one of the fastest on the market, immediately shot into the air, nearly dislodging Maia. Bella gasped as the fourth year impossibly tightened her arms around her waist.

"Maia, I can't breathe," the ebony haired witch told her friend as she leveled them out from the steep ascent.

"Sorry," the brunette whispered as she barely loosened her arms. "Can we not do that again?"

"I'll try not to," Bella promised with a small smile, even though her friend was currently hiding her face in the back of the sixth year's robes.

After flying for a while, Bella slowed the broom to a hovering stop just above the edge of the forbidden forest. She gently placed a hand over the tense ones at her waist.

"The moon's full tonight," she whispered.

To the east, the full moon began to rise from the behind the horizon. Maia let out a small gasp at the sight as the moon bathed the forest and them in its white light. She and Bella relaxed into each other's embrace without realizing it and just watched the moon continue to rise for a few minutes.

Suddenly a wolf's cry broke the moment. Both teenaged girls jumped at the intrusion. Bella turned the broom back towards the school, Maia once again holding to her tightly, although the ebony haired witch found she didn't mind in the least bit. Within a few minutes, they had landed and dismounted in the center of the Quidditch pitch. Both girls immediately missed the contact.

"Thank you, for showing me that," Maia said quietly, her cheeks a light shade of pink. She threw her arms around her best friend, whispering, "thank you" again.

Bella wrapped her arms around the brunette and leaned her head against Maia's. "No problem," she whispered.

As they started to pull back, Bella leaned in to kiss Maia's cheek but at the last second the brunette turned her head. Their lips met in an unexpected and quick kiss. The ebony haired witch jumped back almost instantly while the brunette stood rooted to the spot, a dumbstruck look plastered to her bright red face. Bella's embarrassed cough broke the fourth year out of her trance. Maia chewed her lip in thought while the sixth year shouldered the broom and started heading in the direction of the school.

"Bella, wait," Maia finally said. She ran after her friend, mustering up her courage even as her face continued to redden. She quickly caught up to best friend. "I, um, I think we should talk about what just happened." Bella shook her head and continued forward. "Bella, please," Maia started.

"Why? It's not like we can do it again," Bella told the brunette as she spun around to face her, barely a foot separating them. "It's not… proper."

Maia's eyes were wide. "Would… would you want to kiss again?" she asked quietly, her eyes filling with the same fear of rejection they had held two years previous.

Bella looked away quickly, warring within herself. She had always identified herself as being rebellious but had never thought about going this far. On one hand, she did want to kiss her friend again but on the other, she knew it was wrong. But if it was so wrong, why had it felt right. Slowly she looked back into Maia's dark blue eyes, seeing the other girl's fear. She reached up and gently ran her fingertips across the brunette's cheek. Then, throwing caution to the wind, she leaned in and firmly kissed her friend on the lips.

A/N: My gods, it's been two years. Sorry about that. I don't think that will happen again but I know better than to make any promises; those cause writer's block. Anyway, hope you liked it and please review. They'll keep me writing, hopefully. And I got the story all mapped out, so just give me a month and I should have another chapter, depending on my professors. I swear one of them is out to make us all flunk discreet math. But anyway, here you go!
