Damon and Elena had been sat in the same position for an entire hour now and not much had happened. The building seemed quiet and at the moment, that appeared like a good sign. The small window above them showed that the sun was starting to set in the sky, a light orange glow had begun to illuminate the tiny room they were in. Pretty soon most of the deputies would be leaving for the night and only one or two would remain in the building. Damon and Elena had devised a plan to strike when they were sure most of the staff would be gone, making it easier to get Caroline and Klaus out of the cells. The less deputies on duty meant the chance of getting shot full of wooden bullets was very low. Between the two of them, they could tackle any problems that they may come across. Elena turned her head and stared at Damon who was staring at the wall in front of him.

"Hey-" Elena began but the rest of her sentence was interrupted by a powerful scream. A woman's scream. Elena shot up and stared at the door, her eyes wide. Damon stood up and placed a hand on her arm. It soothed her slightly but not enough. A man's laugh could be heard behind the screams and Elena tuned in her vampire hearing to try to figure out what was going on in the cells.

"Please.. please stop!" A woman screamed and Elena knew it was Caroline's voice.

"Tell me where the other woman is!" Elena heard a deputy shout at Caroline and Elena could feel her bloody boil.

"What other woman?" She heard Caroline gasp out.

"The brunette vampire who made a mockery of us!"

"I don't know what you're talking about.."Caroline's voice seemed to get weaker and Elena felt a tear threaten to fall from her eye. She had to save her.

"I've had enough," Elena heard a male voice say. "Just shoot her."

"If you touch ONE hair on her head, I'll rip your head from your shoulders!" Klaus shouted, his hand smashing against the iron bars that were keeping him locked up. He hissed and Elena could hear his skin burning.

"Careful vampire!" snapped a deputy.

"Vervain on the bars? That's original," said Klaus, sarcasm dripping from his lips. Elena could hear he had lost all of his patience. "Now, I meant it. If you touch her, I will rip you to pieces."

"Quiet! Or you'll be next with a bullet in you!"

"Do your worst,"growled Klaus. A gunshot sounded again and then another. She felt Damon tense up beside her. That was his best friend in there being shot at. Elena heard Klaus grunt in pain but he managed to stayed standing. He swayed and leaned against the vervain soaked bars, his skin burning. He let out a pained scream this time as he skin turned red and blistered from the burns.

"Pipe down vampire." said the same deputy.

"Damon, we have to do something." Elena turned to Damon with wide eyes, scared she would lose her best friend.

"Elena, no. We have to wait. Please, it's the safest way." said Damon. "If we go in there now, they'll kill us all and this rescue trip will have been for nothing. We have to stay here."

Elena slumped down the wall and sat down beside him. She knew he was right but she couldn't stand this. They were toying with Caroline and they could hurt her. How much longer would she have to wait before she could get in there?

"What are you waiting for, idiot? I said shoot her!" A deputy shouted and not a second later, a gunshot was fired and the sounds of Caroline's screams rang through the place.

"Caroline!" Klaus shouted, throwing himself against the bars once again. He hissed as the vervain burned his skin, weakening him further. He continued to slam his body against the bars, using all of his strength to try and break through. Even he wasn't strong enough. He had wooden bullets pumped into him after all.

Another bullet was shot making Caroline scream even louder.

"Please.. stop it!" The blonde vampire begged. Thankfully no bullets had hit her in the heart yet but still, she was in pain and Elena knew that. It took all of her willpower to stop herself from bursting through that door to rip off their heads. She knew that was risk however and she could end up getting them all killed. She was just going to have to wait it out and listen to the painful screams of her best friend, the one person who had been there through everything. Now she had to be there for Caroline. She had to save her.

Tears began to fall down her cheeks and she slumped to the floor, holding her fingers in her ears, trying to block out the noise. Damon looked down at her sobbing and sighed. He walked to her and sat down beside her. He placed a comforting arm around her shoulder and she leaned into him, still crying.

"I know, Elena." said Damon quietly. "We're going to save them, don't you worry."

The gunshots had stopped about an hour ago and the building was silent. The moon was bright in the sky. Elena could see it through the tiny window surrounded by stars. Her cheeks were tear-stained and her eyes were bloodshot. Damon still had his arm around her.

"Are you okay?"

Elena turned her head when she heard him speak.

"I'm fine," replied Elena, somewhat nastily. Damon frowned.

"I only asked if you were okay. No need to bite my head off."

"And I'm telling you I'm fine," said Elena, staring him in the eye.

"I know you hate me, Elena," Damon said to her and Elena remained silent. "I know I'm the last person you want to be here with and I'm sorry."

Silence filled the room for a few moments and Damon had stopped thinking he was going to get a reply. He got a shock when Elena began to speak.

"I don't hate you Damon," muttered Elena. Damon looked up at her, blue eyes meeting brown.

"Yes. Yes, you do hate me."

"N-" Elena began but Damon interrupted her.

"-But that's okay. I've been a complete dick to you since the day we met. I'm not surprised you hate me."

"Yes, you've been a dick to me but I'm not perfect either, Damon." said Elena. "I don't hate you."

"You're not perfect, Elena. But then, is anyone perfect?"

"I suppose not,"

"We all have our faults. We just have to find people who are willing to accept us, faults and all." Damon told her and she smiled slightly. Caroline accepted her for who she was and she accepted Caroline. They were best friends, sisters even. They were there for each other and understood each other. There was nothing they didn't know about each other.

Elena let out a sigh and turned herself so she was was now completely facing Damon.

"You called me out that day at dinner. Do you remember?"

"Is this about how you and Caroline met?" asked Damon, trying to figure out what she meant. Elena nodded and he smiled slightly.

"I knew that there was a story, an interesting one at that.." He paused for a second. "You don't have to tell me-"

"I want to," said Elena with a small smile. "It all started in 1922. I was still human."

Flashback
July 6
th 1922.

Elena Gilbert sat at the bar, sipping on a glass of champagne. She needed this kind of escape. Her father was a wealthy man but very over-protective. He didn't like her being out of his sight and the thought of her drinking alcohol or being around men in a place like this, oh dear, sparks would fly. In this town and age, alcohol was forbidden, illegal in fact. However, the alcohol flows freely if you know where to get it and the code to get in through the door. Elena regularly visited this bar, always alone. She knew if one of her friends came with her, there would be no doubt about them saying something to someone and eventually, her father would find out. That was the last thing she wanted. These nights in this quaint little bar were her escape and she wasn't about to lose it because of one of the loud-mouthed little snobs she called her friends. No, she was quite happy sitting alone at bar, listening to the jazz music and people watching.

Elena took another sip of her champagne and sighed in content. There she was in a beautiful black dress, straight and loose with lots of tassels. Her hair was pinned up, showing off her neck and beautiful earrings to match. She had just finished the last of her champagne when she heard a voice behind her.

"What is a beautiful woman like yourself doing sitting here all alone."

"I prefer my own company." Elena replied, turning around to see an unbelievably handsome man standing, glass in hand. He was fairly tall with a perfect face. He looked older than Elena, not by much however. He wore a expensive suit that simply screamed wealth. Her only thought was that she could do worse. Everything about him screamed class. Deep brown eyes with hair to match. Hair that was done to perfection. His suit was perfectly pressed, not a single crease and his handsome face was just the cherry on top. Her father wouldn't approve but that didn't bother Elena. Her father wasn't here.

"Well, that just won't do," said the man with a slight smirk. "Can I get you another drink?"

Elena looked down at her empty glass and smiled. "Of corse."

He raised a hand and the bartender wandered over, his eyebrow raised.

"Two more please," He said and he leant against the bar while they got a refill. "Do I get to know your name? Or shall I just call you beautiful?"

"Only if I get to know your name first, sir." smiled Elena. The gentleman nodded.

"Very well," he said. "My name is Jonathan, Jonathan Barrett. But you can call me Jon."

"It's lovely to meet you, Jon. I'm Elena Gilbert."

"It's an honour, Elena." Elena blushed as he took her hand in his and raised it to his mouth, kissing it gently while staring into her eyes.

"Your drinks." said the bartender and Jon let go of her hand. He handed her the glass of champagne and paid the bartender. Jazz music played softly in the background but nothing else mattered. Elena's full attention was on Jon and it continued that way for the rest of the night.

She was leaning against his car a few hours later when he pecked her on the cheek.

"Let me take you home.." he insisted but she shook her head.

"My father would be mad if he knew where I had been tonight." Elena replied. "Thank you for a wonderful night, Jonathan."

"Will I get to see you again?" Jon asked, his eyes wide and he held her hands.

"Tomorrow night," said Elena with a smile. "I'll meet you inside."

"Then I will see you tomorrow, beautiful. I will wait all night if I have to." replied Jon.

"Goodnight Jonathan,"

"Goodnight Elena.."

Jazz music played once again and they sat in a booth together in the same bar they had met in. He was mesmerized by her eyes, continually staring into them. She would smile and hold his hand, taking a sip of her drink occasionally but her whole attention was on him once again.

"You have the most beautiful brown eyes.." Jon said to her and she blushed a light shade of pink.

"Thank you. You are very handsome yourself."

"So I've been told," He said with a smirk but Elena pulled away slightly at that. How many other woman had told him that? Jon seemed to realize he had said the wrong thing and pulled her closer to him. "Elena, you are the most beautiful woman I've ever met. These last few weeks have been incredible and I have found myself falling in love with you."

"Oh Jon.." Elena muttered.

"I would like you to do the honor of becoming my wife, Elena." He said with a wide smile, pulling out a box with a diamond ring inside. An engagement ring. Elena's heart almost stopped as she stared down at the ring.

"Oh Jon.. Is it not a little fast?"

"No, beautiful." Jon told her. "I love you and I want to make you my wife."

"Then yes, yes I will marry you," She smiled and he pulled her in for a hug. Once she pulled away, he slipped the huge ring onto her finger and kissed her on the cheek.

She was getting married in a week. A WEEK. Her father had taken the news.. well, he had accepted the news. He had offered to pay for the wedding, so that was something. Now, she was sitting down, sorting out last minute details before the big day. She had her handmade dress, her beautiful bouquet and her bridesmaids. Everything else was arranged. All she had to do was turn up really. She sat curled up against her husband-to-be and smiled. It was almost time.

Jon carried her into the bedroom which her best friend, Gloria had set up for her. It was done up like a bridal suite and looked stunning. He placed her gently on the bed and stood back, looking her up and down.

"My beautiful wife.." He muttered, mostly to himself. "Let me see you."

He reached forwards and began to tug on the ribbon that was tied, holding her in her dress. With each tug, he got rougher and rougher.

"Jon! Jon, stop. Shall we have some champagne first?"

"I want to see my wife.." He snapped and she reeled back in shock as he continued to tug, pulling her around.

"Jon, please. Stop it!" She shouted slightly, trying to get him to let go of the ribbons. With one final tug, the ribbons fell away and the dress began to sag ever so slightly. "Jon! I said no!"

He ignored her and roughly pulled the dress away from her, ripping the delicate material slightly.

"Jon!" She pushed at him but he held her down. She looked into his eyes and was shocked. This didn't seem like Jon, her Jon who she had got to know. Her Jon who she had just married. She gasped as small purple veins began showing under his eyes. "Jon, your eyes.."

"I'm your husband, Elena!" He snapped.

"Please stop, Jon. You're hurting my wrists." begged Elena, her eyes wide.

"Do you love me?" Jon shouted, ignoring her yet again.

"Y-yes.."

"Well then, lie still."

Elena had endured an entire week from her so-called husband. Every night, he would arrive home from work and come into their bedroom, rip off her nightdress and pin her to the bed. She didn't feel loved but she loved him. She did love him and she hoped things would get better.

"Elena!" She heard him shout from their quaint little kitchen. She sighed and stood up, wandering in to meet him.

"Yes?"

"I want to show you something, beautiful."

"What is it, Jon?" asked Elena, a confused look filling her face.

"I'm different that what you thought I was, Elena." Elena couldn't help but think the same thing.

"I don't understand what you mean? Jon, what is going on?"

Jon's face suddenly changed. Dark purple veins protruded underneath his eyes and he barred a set of fangs that Elena couldn't have imagined in her nightmares. She let out a terrified scream and backed away from him, stumbling as she went.

"Don't be frightened," said Jon through barred teeth.

"Keep away!" shouted Elena, shaking as she stared at this monster in front of her.

"Elena, it's me. It's Jon." said Jon, bending down to her level. "I love you Elena and I want to be with you forever. Do you love me?"

And against her better judgement, Elena said yes.

A vampire. He wanted to turn her into a vampire!

"It'll be okay, Elena. I promise you." said Jon with a small smile, stroking his thumb down her cheek. "Now, drink this."

He placed a glass in front of her. He had told her everything. About vampires. About how she had to die. About how she had to drink his blood. He had even told her things about when she was to become a vampire, like defending herself and killing other vampires. She let out a sigh. If she didn't do this, she would lose him. As much as she loved the person she had met, she was not an idiot. She knew he was not that person. But she also knew that she wasn't sure what he was capable of. He could harm her, kill her even if she didn't go along with him. He obviously loved her enough to want to be with her for eternity, that was something. She began to drink the red liquid inside the glass, gagging as she did so. She stopped at the first mouthful but Jon urged her to continued. With Jon watching closely, she finished the glass with a very strong urge to vomit.

"Now, stand up beautiful." Elena did as she was told and she stood in front of him, feeling sick. He ran his hand down the side of her head, resting on her neck. "I love you, Elena.

"I-" She didn't get to finish her sentence. With a crack, everything went black. She was dead.

Elena had adjusted pretty well to being a vampire. Jon was far happier with her now that she was a vampire. He didn't like her new found power however. She would often forget and try to take over. He hated that.

"I'm just popping out, beautiful." said Jon, leaning down to give her a kiss. She was slowly falling asleep on the couch. "I have a small bit of business to take care of. I shouldn't be long."

"Goodbye." Elena mumbled, closing her eyes. She was glad to be rid of him for a little while. She had just heard his car pull away when she drifted off into a light sleep.

She was awoke some time later to a slight tapping noise. She sat up, yawned and rubbed her eyes. Looking around, she realized the tapping was coming from the door. There was someone at the door. Standing up, she wandered over to the door, pulling it open. She was shocked when she saw it was a woman.

"Can I help you?" Elena asked the woman. She had curly blonde hair and a petite button nose. She was beautiful.

"Does Jonathan Barrett live here?" asked the blonde woman and Elena cocked her head to the side.

"Yes, he does. What business do you have with him?"

"That would make you, Elena..?"

"How do you know who I am?" Elena asked her. The blonde woman sighed.

"My name is Caroline Forbes and your husband is my fiancé."

"Excuse me?" Elena was flabbergasted.

"Your husband has been cheating on you." said Caroline.

"Elena, I'm home!"

"I'm in here.." Elena called and Jon followed the sound of her voice.

"I thought we could go out for dinner, beautiful. What do yo-" Jon stopped dead at the sight of both Elena and Caroline in the same room.

"Elena? What's going on?" Jon asked her. Elena's eyes narrowed.

"I''d like you to tell me that, Jon."

"And me.." said Caroline.

"We have had a little talk.." said Elena, motioning to Caroline. "Turns out, you were due to marry her in three weeks time.. two weeks after our wedding!"

"Let me explain.."

"Explain!? I don't want an explanation, Jon! I want to know how many other women there are!" Elena shouted at him.

"Only her, I swear." Jon muttered.

"Well, that's not true, is it Jonathan?" said Caroline, crossing her arms over her chest. "Because yesterday, I had a lovely conversation with a woman named Penelope Mills. She said she was going with you today.."

"I'm not going with anyone!" Jon snapped.

"Except your wife and your almost-wife?" Caroline snapped back. "Imagine my surprise when she mentions a lovely night with my fiancé!"

"Do you want to know the truth, Caroline?" He then turned to Elena. "Do you?"

"Yes!" Both women shouted.

"I've never loved either of you!" Elena felt her heart break in two.

"What?" She muttered, breathless.

"I never loved you Elena! Or her! You were both a means to an end."

"What?" Caroline growled.

"I was turned in 1849 by my girlfriend but she left me six months later for another man! She turned me into this monster and left me!" He shouted, his eyes wide with rage, his fists scrunched up tight. "I only wanted to use you to create a group of vampires to help defend me!"

"Why?" Caroline asked.

"Because I'm going to find her and I'm going to kill her! She killed me.. It's only fair!" He snapped.

"I want no part in this, Jon! I thought you were in love with me!" Elena began to sob lightly.

"I never loved you. You were desperate for my attention the first moment I spoke to you. Why would I ever be in love with someone like you?"

"I want no part in your scheme." Elena sobbed and she stood up, heading for the door.

"If you leave, I will kill you Elena." Jon shouted after her but she continued to walk. Jon snarled and used his vampire speed, rushing to the kitchen. He picked up a wooden spoon and snapped it, creating a pointy stake. Elena span around just in time to see him rushing towards her, stake in hand. She gasped as he was right in front of her. She tried to flee but he grabbed her, holding the stake over her heart, taunting her. "You should have stayed like a good little girl, Elena."

Suddenly, Jon gasped in pain and slumped to the ground, clutching his stomach.

"You bitch!" He bellowed.

Elena looked and saw Caroline holding a metal poker that was used for the fire. She had plunged it deep into his back. So deep in fact, the end of the poker was poking out of his belly. Jon let out a roar of pain and he began to stand back up.
Thinking on her feet, Elena glanced around and spotted the chairs that were used around her table. They were old and wooden. She rushed over to it and threw the chair at the ground, smashing it. She picked up a chair leg and snapped it in half.

"Now!" Caroline called out to her and with all of her courage, Elena plunged the stake into Jon's heart. Within seconds of him letting out a scream, he was dead.

Elena looked at Caroline and she looked back. She smiled at the blonde.

"Thank you, Caroline."

Present Day
Mystic Falls

"...I've never been able to trust a man since," said Elena. "I got Caroline out of all off the trauma so it was worth it. She is the only person I can trust in this entire world."

"You can trust me, Elena." Damon told her, reaching out and holding her hand in his. "You can trust me."

The building was completely silent now. Elena looked at Damon and smiled.

"It's time, Damon." said Elena.

"Come on, let's go."
