Chapter Two
Joining the Quest
Everyone gathered at the doorway to greet the newest arrival. Staying where I was not get in anyone's way. Staring at the wall daydreaming. The dwarf's conversation started fading away as the man from my dreams appeared. Looking at him as he seemed to look at me smiling. He started to say something until, "Girl who are you?" A booming voice shook me out of my trans as the latest guest made their presence known to me. He had an air of leadership flowing around him. A dwarf of great importance and yet somehow familiar.
"My dear Thorin this is Alison Donahue. She was rescued by your nephews from the river," Gandalf told him. Kili and Fili must have told him. Giving him my awkward curtsy showing my respect.
"Call me Ali." Thorin was looking at me strangely.
"Do I know you?" he whispered. Looking at him something seemed to flash across my vision but it was gone before I could act on it. "No I suppose not." Sitting down at the head of the table. Trying to get that vision back when Kili and Fili stood next to me placing their hands on my shoulders making me look at them.
"Don't mind our uncle he is just very cautious when it comes to other races," Fili explained. Nodding as we all sat at the table while the dwarves spoke about a journey with Gandalf and Bilbo doing something in the background.
Not really paying attention to the conversation until I heard Bilbo. "Incineration?" He read from a piece of parchment. Looking up seeing that he has gone a few shades of green.
"Aye he can melt the flesh right off your bones in a blink of an eye," Bofur exclaimed.
"Are you alright?" Asking him seeing him turn from green to white in nothing flat.
"Think furnace with wings," continued Bofur.
"I need some air," he whispered and then tried to stand straight up.
"A flash of light, searing pain and poof you're nothing but a pile of ash."
He looked at us, "No." then he passed out. Kili and Fili laughed as I shook my head going over to help Bilbo into a chair.
"You alright?" I asked him as he was coming to. He nodded then took a cup of tea that Dori offered him. Getting up to leave as Gandalf came over to speak to him.
The wizard spoke to him about his "great" uncle as I went into the dining room sipping a glass of water. Noticing Thorin and Balin were speaking in hushed tones. Kili and Fili came up to me, looking at them they noticed that they had a somewhat concerned look on their faces.
"Are you alright? You seem like you have seen a ghost?" Fili asked. I sighed setting my cup down looking at a small window. "Lady Ali?"
"You can drop the Lady I am just Ali. When your uncle was speaking to me there was something about him, almost like I have seen him before. But I just can't place it. I don't know what is going on." Looking at the brothers then down at the glass of water.
"Ali?" Looking up as Gandalf stood in the door. "Come with me." Nodding I followed him. "Now please explain to me everything that you can remember."
Telling him about my dreams, the nightmares, somewhat recognizing Thorin but having it fly away like a hummingbird. Sitting there listening to me smoking his pipe. Telling him how being here felt more like home to me. Then growing up in the place I was from. He just nodded until I was done speaking and he sighed.
"My dear girl I do believe that coming with us on our journey might be the answer you are looking for. And if I can get these dwarves to Rivendell then perhaps we can get those answers from Lord Elrond. But to convince Thorin is going to be harder than we can imagine." Looking over seeing Thorin standing in front of the fire place. Getting up going into the room sitting down on the floor as Thorin's deep voice started humming then he started singing as the others continued to hum.
Far over the misty mountains cold.
To dungeons deep, and caverns old.
We must away, at break of day.
To find our long forgotten gold.
The pines were roaring on the height.
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread.
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The lull of the dwarf's voices pulled me into the world of sleep. Before drifting off completely someone draped something over me. As dreams came to me, it was the woman again who showed up. She smiled and opened her arms beckoning me to come to her. "My darling Tirithiel welcome home." She said as I started to go to her when someone started shaking me.
"Ali come we are leaving," they said. Sitting up, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. Looking up at Kili as he smiled. Getting up the cloak that had been draped over me fell to the floor. Picking it up handing it to him. "You keep it."
"Thanks. I don't suppose anyone has an extra pair of boots?" Realizing that boots would be necessary for my feet. Kili laughed and handed me a pair of boots.
"Gandalf brought these for you. Come on put them on and let's go," Kili said slipping them on then we headed out of the hobbit's home and to a pack of ponies. Everyone was getting ready packing their things and placing them on the ponies.
"You will ride with Kili for the time being," Gandalf said when Thorin looked at me.
"She is not coming with us. I won't allow it," Thorin bellowed marching over to us.
"Thorin she is lost and needs answers, answers that she might be able to find along the quest," Gandalf mentioned. Nodding looking at the dwarf king. As he scowled at me looking me up and down.
"Do you have any skills in fighting? Sword or ax as your weapon of choice?" he said to me. "Well girl?"
"Neither I prefer staff and bow and arrows," I replied.
"Fili test her skills," Thorin said and looked at Gandalf. "Can you provide her a weapon Gandalf." The wizard nodded went to the woods then came back with a beautiful staff made out of cherry wood. Handed it to me it had a good feel to it. I hadn't fought with a staff since college stage fighting. Then Fili attacked me bringing my attention to the current battle. As he swung I dodged over and over again making him quite mad. The gymnastics from high school paid off in the long run as I continued to dodge and block.
Flipping backwards caught Fili off guard. Doing the splits as he missed my head by inches. Swinging my staff at his feet out knocking him to the ground. Landing on his back placing the staff at his throat.
"Where did you learn that?" Kili asked in awe.
"High school gymnastics and college stage fighting," Telling them as they looked at me confused. "Long story."
"So can she come?" Gandalf asked. Looking at Thorin as he shook his head.
"She can come as long as she also learns sword fighting. Staff can only get her so far and is kindling if it's broken," he said in a huff.
Everyone came over patting me on the back congratulating me. Fili looked at me smiling. "Good match Ali.".
"No hard feelings?" Asking him. Shaking his head then went to his horse.
"Mount up we leave now," Thorin shouted and everyone got on their designated ponies. Kili got on his pony then held out his hand to me. Taking it as he helped me onto the back of the pony placing my arms around his waist so I wouldn't fall off.
"Anyone want to take bets to see if the hobbit comes or not?" Bofur asked, everyone started taking bets.
"I think he'll come," whispering to Kili as he looked back.
"You do?"
"Yes."
"Ali says the hobbit will come. Put her down for 20 silver," Fili yelled.
"Hope you can pay up lassie when he doesn't show," Dwalin shouted behind him.
We were traveling for about an hour as everyone asked me questions that I was trying to answer. "Ali what is it like where you grew up?" Ori asked me.
"I grew up in a household of five kids. I don't know my parents you see I'm an orphan but was adopted by a loving couple who made sure I had what I needed."
"What happened to your parent's?" Kili asked me.
"Not sure really. My adopted parents told me that someone placed me on their door steps when I was only three. They said that there was a note but it was written in a different language and they couldn't read it. But they loved me like their own." Then we could hear yelling behind us.
"Wait...wait...I signed it!" We stopped and waited for the hobbit to catch up. "I signed it." Bilbo handed Balin the parchment.
"Everything looks in order. Welcome Master Baggins to the company of Thorin Oakenshield."
"Someone get him a pony," Thorin instructed and continued. Bilbo tried to reason that he was good with walking when Fili and Kili picked him up and placed him on the extra pony.
"Hey Nori pay up!" Oin yelled and small bags were being tossed back. One came our way as Kili grabbed it and handed it back to me.
"Thank you." Smiling putting the bag into my jean's pocket.
"You never did tell us what your clothes are made out of," Fili inquired looking at my covered legs.
"Never seen a woman in trousers before?" Ori said.
"These are jeans made from a material called denim."
"Can I touch it?" he asked. Smiling as I nodded. Touching the bottom of my pants. "Very odd cloth. Heavy to. Doesn't these weigh you down?"
"Nope, they are very comfortable." Smiling as Ori put his hand back on the reigns. Then I heard Bilbo yelling from up the line.
"Wait stop. I forgot my handkerchief," he shouted. Rolling my eyes and laughed when Bofur ripped off a piece of his jacket and threw it back to the hobbit.
"Move on," Thorin called after shaking his head.
"You think he can handle this quest as our burglar?" Fili asked as Kili chuckled.
"I think so but he has to learn how to live without certain luxuries," smiling at the poor hobbit. Continuing until it was dusk then we set up camp for the night. Getting off the pony looked around.
"Alison go and get fire wood with Fili and Kili. Bofur, Bilbo make dinner. Oin, Gloin take care of the ponies. The rest of you scout around make sure nothing is on our trail," Thorin ordered. Nodding following the two into the woods.
Gathering sticks when something snap in front of me. Looking up seeing the woman from my dreams. Dropping the sticks running up to her as she glided through the trees. "Wait! Wait!" I yelled chasing after her.
She stopped looking back at me for a moment. Catching up to her as I was trying to catch my breath. "Please tell me who you are? Why I keep dreaming about you? Why do you call me Tirithiel?"
"My darling Tirithiel all questions will be answered soon. Just have patience." She faded into the dark.
"Please tell me what's going on!" Yelling into the darkness. Snapping behind me had me turning around to see Kili and Fili staring at me.
"What's going on Ali?" Kili asked.
"Nothing just thought I saw something." Collecting a pile of sticks we headed back to camp. Not saying anything as I put the sticks for the night on the pile. Walking to the ledge and sat down staring off into the night with questions bombarding my mind.
After dinner sitting by the fire near Kili and Fili. Staring into the fire thinking and trying to remember anything that came to me. That's when screeching could be heard. "What was that?" Bilbo asking coming from the horses.
"Orcs, the low lands are crawling with them," Fili said.
"Orcs?" Bilbo repeated.
"Throat cutters. They attack in the dark hours of the night. No sounds just lots of blood," Kili said scaring the poor hobbit. Elbowing him in the side as he looked at me. I was a little frightened myself of the dangers orcs could be.
"Do you think a raid by orcs is a funny?" Thorin scolded his nephews. Their faces fell and looked at the ground.
"We didn't mean anything by it," Kili said apologetic.
"No you didn't. You know nothing of the world," Thorin growled stalking off. Balin came up to us and explain why he hated orcs so much. I went back to watching the fire as Balin told the story of the defeat of the orcs at Moria. And Thorin's defeat of Azog the Defiler.
"And what happened to the pale orc?" Bilbo asked.
"He crawled back into the filth and died of his wounds long ago. Now back to bed all of you. The journey begins at day break," he said and they all nodded. Curling up against the wall pulling the cloak closer to me to ward off the chill that the night brought in. Dreams never came leaving me in peace for the time being.
