Disclaimer: I do not own The Lost Boys, just my OCs.
"Oh crap this was a really big mistake." I said to myself.
I heard Paul's laugh a few feet away, "It'll be wild, you'll love it!"
"How the hell did you helping me drive your bike one night turn into me and you having a race?!" I demanded, calling over to him before I remembered he could hear me even if I whispered.
"I'm very persuasive." He laughed.
"And insane!" I added, my stomach tightening in knots as he started Marko's bike he had borrowed, I turned my head to focus on Paul's bike, getting it to start before looking down at the empty beach in front of us. Oh good, at least I won't hit anyone.
"You ready?" He asked, revving Marko's bike.
"No but I know it doesn't matter to you if I am or not!"
He laughed, "Okay, go!"
I held my breath as the bike moved forward and picked up speed really quickly, I forced myself to release the breath as I accelerated and intense exhilaration replaced the nervousness. Soon a smile crept up and as Paul and me raced down the beach, I couldn't help but laugh.
"Whoo!" I looked over to see him wave before he sped up to overtake me, leaving me in a cloud of sand. I didn't have the cuts to go at that speed yet and it was my first time driving by myself, he could win this one.
I smiled and watched the boardwalk lights as I sped past, the coloured lights morphing into soft blurs, the sounds drowned out by the wind that rushed past my ears and whipped my ponytail. I grinned before looking back out to the front to see if I could even see Paul anymore.
My heart stopped and my hand squeezed the brake before I could even think, the whole bike jolting and I lost my balance, scrambling to keep it straight. And to avoid hitting someone that had just appeared in front of me.
My panic seemed to win over making me freeze up, unsure of what to do as the bike lost control, I skidded to a harsh stop and I rolled onto the sand, the bike falling on my right leg making me cry out, the shock blocking most of the pain out but I was sure I had broken something.
I wiped the sand from my face and looked around for the person I must have come close to hitting, I must have been disorientated because I tried to focus enough to see someone, but all I could see was an empty beach, all the other people gathered close to the boardwalk, this was the quiet part. But there had been someone here.
I shook my head and sat up, looking down at the bike which sat on my leg. I stretched forward and pushed as much as I could, wriggling out from under it. The sound of an approaching bike had me look up to see a headlight speeding towards me, within a few seconds Paul had braked and jogged over to me.
"Shit I thought you just decided to stop, what the hell happened?" He asked, crouching down beside me.
I looked round, "I saw someone, I thought I was going to hit them."
Paul's gaze followed mine around the beach, "There's no one here, Bryn."
"I know, but... Actually I don't know. I sound crazy, sorry if I messed up your bike." I apologised.
"Forget the bike, are you alright?"
I went to bend both my legs to stand then winced as my right leg twinged in pain, "The bike fell on my leg." I said through gritted teeth.
"Can you bend it?" He asked, I screwed my eyes shut and bent it at the knee as much as I could, straightening it out and back onto the sand.
"It hurts but I can."
He nodded, "Probably no breaks, just some bad bruising. Unless it swells, you should be fine."
I raised my eyebrows, "You got a medical degree or something?" I asked with a laugh.
"Nope, I just know. I'm not just a pretty face." He joked before his face turned serious, "Well this was a bad idea, I forget how fragile humans are sometimes."
"I'm not fragile." I argued, he gave me a pointed look and I rolled my eyes, "I'm not, look, I bet I can walk fine." I said, using my left leg mostly to stand, stepping forward with my right. Unfortunately it buckled and I would have fell flat on my face had Paul not caught me in time.
"Yeah, sure. I'll take you back up to the boardwalk." He said.
"What about the bikes?"
He looked back at them, "I'll get one of the guys to get them, some one of them should be available." I watched a look come over his face like he was thinking about something, then as his expression changed I realised he must have made contact with one of the others, "Dwayne said he'd get them. Come on."
Before I could even walk Paul had me scooped up bridal-style and started carrying me back, rather than joke about it this time, I stayed quiet until we got back to the boardwalk. God I was stupid, of course there had been no one else on the beach.
When we got back he set me down on a bench before disappearing, I let him wander off and waited where I was, stretching out my leg to see if it had swelled. It looked fine, just the same as the other leg. I was thankful I was wearing red shorts, it was a lot easier to move it gently this way and that.
I jumped as an ice cream appeared suddenly in front of my eyes, I took it and smiled up at Paul, "Thanks."
He sat down beside me with his own, "I hear ice cream helps any problem."
"You heard right." I grinned, "Sorry for being so clumsy."
"It's not your fault, I shouldn't have let you drive. It's obvious you can just about walk." He teased, I put my finger to the top of my spoon and flicked the ice cream from it onto his cheek, grinning as he wiped if off.
"I'll let you away with that one, only because you're injured." He said.
"Very nice of you." I shot back, deciding to be grateful and just eat the ice cream rather than waste it. I was just digging around the bottom when I noticed someone walking towards us.
"Hey, did you get the bikes back?" Paul asked Dwayne.
"Yeah, what the hell was she doing on a bike by herself?" Dwayne demanded.
"Chill out dude, we were just having fun and it was an accident, I had tons of them when-"
"It doesn't matter when you have accidents because you can't get killed, she's a different matter entirely."
I set down the ice cream and stood up, using mostly my left leg just in case, "It was my fault, Paul showed me everything I had to do. I thought I saw something and I freaked out, he had nothing to do with it."
Dwayne continued to glare at Paul, before Paul chuckled, "She's fine, there's no broken bones or anything. It's no big deal."
I nodded, trying to be of some reassurance, I didn't like it when Dwayne was angry. It wasn't that I was scared, I just didn't like it.
"I think I should go home, rest up and stuff." I said after a few seconds, Paul nodded.
"Yeah maybe you should. I'll-"
"I'll take her, I think you've done enough." Dwayne interrupted.
It was Paul's turn to glare before his gaze turned to me, he nodded back at Dwayne before turning and walking the other way, "Paul!" I called after him, but he continued walking, his usual bounce in his step gone and his hands were buried in his pockets.
I turned to Dwayne, "Why'd you have to make him feel worse?"
"He should feel bad, that was a stupid thing to do tonight." Dwayne said.
"It wasn't like he forced me into it, we wanted to do something fun and he spent ages making sure I knew what to do. I just froze up and fell, and he felt bad enough before you came over."
"You don't get how easy it is for a human to get hurt, you could have fallen the wrong way and broken your neck. And I know it's not all Paul's fault, you should no better than to do something dangerous than that."
I scoffed, "Well maybe after being around such dangerous guys for so long, it's starting to rub off on me." I said with narrowed eyes.
"You shouldn't let how we act rub off on you, you should know there's a big difference separating us."
"I do know, I saw the big difference for myself, remember?" I asked, Dwayne's gaze hardened.
"Yeah, and remind me, wasn't it a dangerous situation you had got yourself into that made me step in? You seem to do it a lot."
"Yeah, and you seem to make it your personal business to decide what I can and can't do. You're not my dad, Dwayne. And you know what? You're not my friend, Paul is. I'm going home by myself, wouldn't want to get in another dangerous situation by letting you come with me."
With that I turned and started walking the other way, I could practically feel Dwayne's gaze still on me, so I tightened the muscles in my leg and tried to play off the slight limp I had as I walked. I didn't turn back, I just kept walking until I got out of the boardwalk.
It wasn't that long to my house, and thankfully I wore black converse so I could walk easily enough, I only had to stop a few times and it was usually due to being pissed off more than anything else.
God, why did I agree to getting on that bike? Even if I had known everything about how to drive it and stuff, I still shouldn't have done that. Ugh, great, now I'm letting Dwayne get to me. Even more than he had already.
I shook my head and vowed never to let my thoughts stray to Dwayne as I walked, but even then it was impossible. I had barely made it ten steps when he suddenly became the focus of my brain again. Stupid vampire.
When I finally made it onto my street I breathed a sigh of relief, taking my keys from my pockets. My ears registered a sound behind me, like wind whistling. Maybe Dwayne decided to follow me home after all and he had just caught up using some kind of vampire speed. I turned to tell him off before I froze.
She stood tall with her feet apart and her hands in her pockets, a smile on her face. She looked to be in her twenties and had short dark hair that reached just pas her chin. I tried to find my voice to ask who she was, but before I even could ask her face changed before my eyes. Bones poked out along her forehead, her eyes glowed orange, and her smile changed from mildly pleasant to sinister in an instant as two fangs elongated to press into her lower lip.
"Oh shit." I whispered.
She waited a second before her shoulders lifted in a chuckle, "That's it? No girly scream?"
I swallowed, "Y-you're not the first v-vampire I've met." I told her, cursing myself for stuttering. I couldn't help it. I was alone and she was a vampire I had never met before. Suddenly telling Dwayne I wanted to walk home alone didn't seem like such a good idea.
"I noticed, you seemed pretty friendly with that blonde one earlier. Racing on bikes, very romantic." She teased.
I blinked, "You were on the beach. It was you I saw."
She shrugged, "I happened to land in your path, sorry. I sped off as soon as you saw me but you still crashed. And he came back for you, how sweet." She crooned.
"He's my friend."
"I know, I can smell it off you. That's the problem with hanging out with vampires, their scent sticks to you something awful." She said, taking a few steps closer. I couldn't even move as she stopped a foot away, sniffing before wrinkling her nose.
"God you must hang out with more than one, and frequently, you can hardly even smell your human... Scent." I watched the smirk drop off her face in an instant.
"What?" I asked, taking a step back with my left leg. The way she looked at me was starting to freak me out.
"It can't be." She whispered, staggering back a step.
"What can't be? What the hell are you talking about?"
She looked frightened, worried, and a little like she was going to be sick. I waited for an answer, but she shook her head and turned.
"Hey-" I went to step forward just as her feet left the ground, "Whoah, wait, come back!" I called, but she continued to go higher before going back in the direction of the boardwalk.
"What the hell...?" I whispered to myself, wondering what could have freaked her out so much that she left. For a second it looked like I was going to be her next meal, but something stopped her.
I looked back down towards where my house was, before I put my keys back in my pocket and started walking back towards the boardwalk. Even if she had let me live, she was a vampire and I needed to warn the guys that they might not be the only ones on the boardwalk tonight.
