It was tea-time on a rainy afternoon, two days after she had returned from her second trip to Neverland, and Wendy was regaling her friends with stories of her travels through Europe. As she told about the time her aunt had been pickpocketed in Germany for the fifth or sixth time since her arrival home, she let her mind wander. She heard the doorbell ring and Toodles yell, "I'll get it." She could hear voices, but couldn't make out the words. Her story came to its conclusion, and her friends burst into laughter.
"Wendy," Toodles said, entering the drawing room, "there's a fellow here to see you."
Wendy's friends immediately stopped their giggling and stared at Wendy. Toodles ushered the gentleman in.
"Nick!" Wendy breathed. "It's so good to see you! I wasn't sure that you'd be able to find me," she added with a smile.
"I was quite determined," Nick replied, grinning back at her. One of Wendy's friend's began fanning herself, drawing Wendy's attention.
"Oh, please excuse my rudeness, these are my friends, Alice and Claire."
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," Nick said, bowing slightly to both. "I'm don't want to interrupt, I simply would like to invite you to the theater tonight."
"Oh, that would be lovely!" Wendy replied.
"Only if you join us for dinner first," came a voice from the doorway. They turned to see Mrs. Darling entering. "Wendy, dear, who is your friend?"
"This is Nicholas Fielding. I met him…erm…abroad."
Nick came to her rescue. "I'm a captain, ma'am. I occasionally do trading with the East India Company and security for companies and merchants. It is wonderful to finally be able to meet the mother I have heard so much about," he said, bowing over her hand.
Mrs. Darling grinned. "He's a charmer, Wendy, I like him. Please come to dinner."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world. Now, please excuse me, I'd hate to come between you and your plans with your friends. I'll see you this evening." And with that, Nick took his leave, with four women staring in his wake, and one teenage boy rolling his eyes.
Peter found that, despite his best efforts, he couldn't stay away. That was why, two days after depositing Wendy back into the welcoming arms of her family, he found himself at her window again. However, this time the candles were out and the room was empty. 'Where is she,' Peter wondered. He decided to investigate and traveled to the next window over. This was clearly Mr. and Mrs. Darling's room, and it too was empty. Next the boys' room…also devoid of people.
"Where is everyone?" he asked Tink.
She shrugged.
He decided to try the downstairs. He drew in a sharp breath when he looked in the living room window. The entire family was in the room, making it seem incredibly full. Seeing the lost boys as teenagers was not what had shocked him, nor was the growth of Michael and John. No, what shocked him was seeing Hook's progeny in their midst. Nicholas Fielding, the bloody bastard, was sitting nearly in the middle of the group, was making them all laugh, and worst of all, was rising from his seat and taking Wendy's hand. He watched as Nick's hands gently caressed the skin on her arm as he helped her into her coat. Peter saw Mr. Darling come over and shake the bugger's hand, and saw Mrs. Darling's approving smile, and immediately knew something must be done. He was plotting as he watched Wendy kiss her mother's cheek and head out the door with Nick's arm around her. Nick Fielding had just declared war, and Peter was not going to lose.
