Sophia rolled over her eyes landing on Daryl and Mac. Both were on the floor facing the other. Being quiet she kicked Brian in the face waking him up. He caught her ankle and tightened his grip causing her to grimace. Sophia kicked again but with her other foot causing him to grunt when it connected with his chest. He glared at her but she grinned then jerked her head at their dads.
Brian's eyes turned towards them and for the first time in a week he smiled. Daryl was scowling at his brother and Mac was grinning like a lunatic nodding. Whatever they were talking about had both looking years younger. She didn't like the weight that was starting to weigh them down. Mac was more surly towards them and Daryl just wasn't around as much. She got it but that didn't mean she couldn't be petulant and pout. Sometimes she hated this town because they demanded so much of her family. These people were lazy and didn't want to learn. You either learn or die; that's what Daryl told her. He didn't cut corners or baby her and she appreciated it. From the first day of him finding her he'd never cut her slack. She was stronger for it.
"What are they doing?" Brian whispered.
Sophia struggled trying to get her leg out of his grip and he smiled. He wasn't looking at her but his grip tightened. Fighting harder she kicked him even harder with her free leg and he yelped. He kicked her back and before long they both toppled to the floor. The table scraped and she heard something tip over while their bodies thudded on the floor. Fighting still going strong as they tried to struggle free of the blankets. When she was finally free and ripped her leg free of his grip she crawled away quickly. Looking up into Daryl's eyes she flopped back on the floor her crab walk ending.
"What the hell are you two doing?" Mac questioned. He jerked the blanket it off his son and grabbed his hand pulling him up. His own hand went to his forehead and Brian held still. "You feeling better?"
Brian nodded and scowled at his dad. "You look like shit."
"Charming." Andrea quipped breezing into the room and handing Brian medicine. "You need to eat with that. I've already got your food on the table." She pointed and Brian walked away.
Sophia watched him and laughed. He scowled at her and flipped her off. It was hard to take him serious when his hair was pasted to one side of his head while the other looked like it'd been through a wind storm. He was in sleep pants and nothing more- just like Mac. Nope, can't take him serious.
"Is that what I think it is?" Andrea edged forward.
Sophia shadowed her and Mac and Daryl both nodded. "Daryl here is the pussy whisperer."
"EW!" Sophia yelped.
Daryl glared at his brother and elbowed him in the chest. Mac started coughing. Andrea stepped towards him but before she could do much he slammed into Daryl roughly. Both fell back into the wall with a crash. Sophia whooped and trotted after them. She was use to them rough housing but knew that this was a first for Andrea. She looked thunderstruck. Brian appeared suddenly holding his plate and wolfing his food down watching. He raised a brow at her and she grinned nodding to Andrea.
Daryl's chest heaved and he shoved Mac further back. He slid on the hardwood and threw his arms out for balance. "Guess that makes you a cock gobbler."
Mac sneered at him and wiped blood away from his mouth. "You dick. Wait till I'm not sick and try this shit again. I'll beat your ass."
"You'll try." Daryl snapped. He turned back towards the living room and Sophia followed. He bent down and pulled something out of a basket. He motioned her over to him.
Sophia's jaw dropped seeing the tiny ball of fluff against his chest. "OH MY GOD!"
Brian was just behind her and she grabbed his bicep jerking him around. He stumbled but Daryl steadied him.
"What the fuck jerk!" Brian growled.
"Shut up bitch!" Sophia hissed, "It's so fluffy!"
Sophia tried to pick it up but Daryl shook his head. "This isn't just a kitten."
"Looks like a kitten." She muttered reaching again.
"Sophia." His voice was a warning and she looked up at him. "Stop. It's a bobcat. It isn't tame."
"Yet." Brian retorted.
Mac was there then and made a point to try and touch the kitten. It hissed while tiny little claws swiped at him. Sophia frowned watching it press into Daryl's chest more.
"Why can he touch it and not us?"
"I told you he was the pussy whisperer." Mac guffawed.
"Mac."
Everyone froze. Sophia watched Mac's face and it looked like he'd been dunked in ice. Looking behind his back she watched her mom cross her arms over her chest. Carol shook her head and Mac turned slowly.
"Now Carol before you hit me you should know Daryl's already brutalized me. Me, a sick man." Mac whined. Carol arched a brow at him and Mac stepped towards her. "Don't do this to me. We had something good going." His arms wrapped around her and Sophia grinned. Her mom's feet left the ground as he spun her.
She was planted right next to Daryl. Mac's arms were still tight around her holding her own arms down. Sophia smiled at her mom and pointed to Daryl's chest. Carol finally seen the kitten and her face lit up. She started to reach for it but Brian's hand flashed out catching it before she could get hurt.
"Daryl's pussy has claws."
"Father like son." Andrea sighed.
Mac let Carol go and threw his arm over Brian's shoulder. Daryl turned the kitten then holding it's tiny little feet in his hand. It looked so tiny next to him.
"How big will it get?"
Daryl held it up looking at it and then shrugged. "They can get up to forty pounds."
"That's a big-"
"MAC!" Carol warned, "Don't make me tell you again. My daughter is right there."
"You're daughter talks like a fucking sailor when you aren't around."
Carol looked at her and Sophia pushed her lip out. Blinking slowly she shook her head and Daryl snorted. She stepped on his foot but her mom seen it. Daryl hid his smile and she shifted closer to him. If anyone could keep her from getting in trouble it was him.
"Whats her name?" Brian interrupted.
Sophia shot him a thankful look and he smiled. He was flushed while ignoring his dad and Andrea. She was trying to mother him but he was using Brian as a shield. Brian just went with it and she realized he wasn't use to Mac getting along with any woman that ever gave Brian the time of day. Well besides her mom but that was different.
"Haven't given her one." Daryl shrugged.
"Samuel L. Catson." Brian quipped.
Turning her head she shot him a weird look, "It's a girl Brian."
He scowled at her but it wasn't near as threatening as usual. Not with him being used as a human shield still. He huffed at her and looked at Daryl.
"Fine let's name it fucking princess jerkface."
Sophia growled but ignored him. She chanced getting closer and eyes went to her. It's little jaws opened and a little yowl rumbled out. Moving closer again Daryl nodded and tightened his grip on it's legs. Bringing her hand up she stroked down it's face and then it's back. It was so soft and she forgot about everyone else in the room as a little purr came out.
"Xena."
Daryl stared at her for a minute then smiled. "Xena it is."
Mac and Brian stared at her. Sophia kept stroking down it's tiny little back. Daryl let it's feet go and it batted at her hands. She smiled when it pressed closer to him but nudged her hand. It wasn't tame, not yet but it would be.
"Xena?" Mac huffed, "What the hell. Why?"
"Because the world is shit Mac." Sophia smiled at the kitten. "She had to be strong to survive until Daryl saved her. She's a fighter."
