Chapter 330 – All good things...

Duke's mother had disappeared shortly after he was born. His father was a truck driver, who tried to be a good roll model, but was forced to be away from home more often than not. His aunt was the one that ended up looking after him. Unfortunately, she was less interested in being a good roll model, and more interested in living off of her brother while doing as little as possible.

Tall and lean for his age, he looked like he should be clumsy, and even weak, but that was not the case. Because he had a face bordering on pretty while looking frail, he had been picked on when he was younger. When he got upset about it and took a swing at one of his antagonists, the blow had sent the other boy sprawling. By junior high school he had a reputation for being quick to anger, and for not holding back.

Two things came out of those early confrontations in school. First was that he proved that he could, in fact, fight very well, with both speed and strength that nobody could match. The second was that he gained a following of other students that admired his strength. Thus Duke started his climb to power.

To his credit, he was never a bully, but neither was he a saint. His followers offered him tokens, small gifts to try to be on his good side, so that they could enjoy the protection of his reputation. When one of them was bullied, Duke would make an effort to put a stop to it, somewhere away from school.

When a bully gets hurt because he was in a fight with a skinny kid with a cute face, he doesn't want to admit it. When the bully ends up with an injury bad enough to need a hospital visit, the ego is likely to be hurting even more. There was never enough information for the police or his school administration take action, but they were aware that there was a problem brewing. Egos were being hurt, and the violence was starting to escalate.

In high school, Duke found himself facing a whole new batch of antagonists, would-be bullies that thought they had found an easy target. At a new school, where he was not well known, with bullies that had only, at best, heard of him, were interested in establishing their own superiority in the pecking order. Duke was not going to just let himself be beaten.

Growing up as he had, where he had, Duke had made a try at high school because he knew that it was what his father wanted. Secretly, he didn't expect to graduate. He was among the lowest ranked students of his year, and getting into fights, no matter how easily he won, would not make his teachers happy with him.

Such thoughts didn't get him down. He was stronger than anybody he had ever had a fight with. There were still plenty of opportunities for a strong man to make money. When his homeroom teacher started the day by telling him to go to the counseling office, before he could even sit down at his desk, he was sure his time in high school was about finished.

At the counseling office, Ms. Shinchu Rina greeted him with a cool look. Shinchu Sensei was very popular with the students. Aside from not dressing all stiff and stuck up, she was known for her patients with anybody that came to her for advice. She had counseled Duke three times before about his rough attitude, and about getting into fights.

The first time she had simply reminded him that fighting was against school rules, and told him to be careful in the future. The second time she had suggested he spend more time studying to help him stay out of trouble, and that if he spent a little effort, with proper decorum, he could probably find a girlfriend that would help him find better uses for his energy. The third counseling meeting with Shinchu Sensei had included a lecture about his behavior, and how she expected better of him, that actually made him feel guilty, for about two days.

She had a way of making Duke feel like she really cared about his future. She never said anything insulting or hurtful the way his aunt usually did. He got a sense that she understood what it was like to not fit in, and didn't blame him for not wanting to be just another body standing in a line. That last meeting had ended strangely.

"If you don't find a reason to stay out of trouble, Duke," The counselor had told him. "I can call someone that will put things in perspective for you."

Duke wondered if this time would be his last visit to Shinchu Sensei's office. When he arrived, she gave him a cool look, then told him to have a seat by the door. He did as he was told, and as he waited for whatever was to come, he wondered if he would miss her.

The waiting dragged on. It was only ten minutes, but with out anything to do, Duke was left to feel the passing of time. He tried to think about what would happen when his aunt found out he was being kicked out of school. He knew he would have to get a job right away. On the other hand, if he got a job, then he could move out on his own and not deal with his aunt any more.

Duke felt a small smile growing inside. If he moved out on his own, his aunt would have to get a job for a change. No more living off of her brother with the excuse of looking after his son.

That smile, and any other comforting thoughts suddenly vanished. Duke felt a deep chill grip his heart as a dark pressure washed over him. The door opened, and Duke was sure that something out of a nightmare was behind him.

"Aono San," Shinchu Sensei had looked up when the door opened, and while her voice and words were calm and polite, her face lit up in a way that made Duke jealous. "Thank you for coming. How are you doing?"

"I'm well. How have you been?" Answered a voice that was rich and strong.

Duke was surprised when the man came into his field of vision. He was tall, confident, and even handsome. In spite of how normal the man looked, there was no way for Duke to not notice the dark aura that came from him. The man's presence made Duke want to flinch away. When the man turned and made eye contact, Duke was frozen in place.

Tsukune left the public high school with a sense of accomplishment. Rina had called him because the boy she was worried about never lost a fight. He never even looked hurt after one. She had suspected the student of being a youkai, and saw that he was going to need help if he was ever going to have a chance at a successful life.

One meeting had been enough for Tsukune. It had been clear right away that the teen was not purely human. Once it was established that Duke was in need of more than a public education the answer was simple. It had not even taken much to convince the teenager to agree to the transfer. Duke would be on his way to Youkai Academy in time to make class the following Monday. Even if Duke did not want to take his education beyond high school, the Youkai Academy would give him a chance to find out more about himself, and with a little luck, to make the kinds of connections that would help him see the world as more than just a place for fighting.

With that problem, if not solved, than at least it was under control for the time being, it was time for Tsukune to move on to the next project. There was a pack of very fast pick-pockets in the next prefecture that the police had been unable to catch more than a quick look at. He suspected that it would take a few days crack the case, but a crowed gathering to see the gravid Sweetheart Chef's latest live event would be too good of a chance for the thief to miss.

Moka looked in to the crib with a dreamy smile on her lips. Her children were sleeping quietly, looking like little angles. The twins, a boy and a girl, were the joy of her life. While she had grown to love Tsukune's other children, Moka knew hers were the most precious. As she looked down on their sleeping faces, she felt all of her love for Tsukune swell up within her. He had given her so much that she could not imagine life without him.

Watching their sleeping babies, Moka hoped that she could be good enough of a mother that her son and daughter would grow up to be like their father. She had long given up the stupid idea that Tsukune had to be worthy of her, knowing that she would be spending the rest of her life making sure she would be worthy of him, and she also wanted to be the kind of mother his children deserved.

With quiet steps, Moka slipped out of the nursery. Being a mother was rewarding, but she still had her law practice to manage. The Me sisters would watch over the babies while they slept. Ruby would suckle them when they woke. The witch was always happy to help out with Tsukune's children, and Moka had no doubt that she would continue to do so no matter how many children there were. As she made her way to her home office she gave a smile an a nod to her husband's slave.

Ruby smiled and nodded in return. She had her sewing basket out, making cute swaddling clothes for the babies. Moka wouldn't approve of some of the designs she was working on, but Ruby wasn't worried about it. The vampire's babies could be dressed in proper, boring cloths if that was what their mother wanted. Ruby was going to make sure 'her' children never lacked for a costume for any occasion. Her own pregnancy was too early along to show in her figure yet, but there was no sense in waiting.

Inari felt a little guilty about it, but couldn't stop smiling as she looked at her slim waistline in the mirror. She was every bit as fit as she was the day she graduated university. Motherhood had given the rest of Tsukune's women full figures. Even Moka, who had quickly lost the baby weight, still had a little more curve to her hips and chest after delivering her twins.

She knew she would have Tsukune's baby some day, but she was not in a hurry to make it happen. In fact, Inari intended to wait until the others were satisfied they had done their womanly duty. Her turn to be a mother would come when hers would be the only baby Tsukune would have to pamper and hold. It would still be a few more years before that happened, but that was not a problem.

Inari had a lifetime with Tsukune to look forward to. She would continue being his lieutenant and his lover, supporting him and comforting him. And when she finally gave in to her desires to have a baby, Tsukune would be an experienced and loving father. Until then, Inari thought with a smile, she would be slim, sexy, and ready to make him happy however she could.

Mizore hummed happily to herself as she worked through the pile of documents on her desk. Her daughters were learning well, and they were not the only ones. There were more children in the village than in any other time in living memory. Jessie and Yuki just had their second baby. Police office Yamada and the two Snow Fairies that had attached themselves to him were expecting babies number two and three. Because of the inn the Snow Fairies were managing, there were a dozen single mothers in the village, each with a school aged child. There were younger children still, and quite a few pregnancies.

Mizore had eight daughters, and finally a son, by Tsukune. What had started out as simply home schooling her own little girls had turned into the first official school in the village. Seeing how well Mizore had done for herself by getting a modern education, and how confident she was, other mothers wanted to see if their own children could benefit from going to school. Other mothers helped out, but Mizore was effectively the headmistress and head teacher of the school. She now found it soothing to cradle her suckling son as she graded papers.

She knew she had pushed her luck. Even with everything else, having eight pregnancies had been a risk. She would have no more babies, but she was able to accept that. Tsukune loved her and all of their children, and Mizore was famous through the village for having more children than any other Snow Fairy in their known history.

Mizore knew that it would not be long before Fumusume would be leaving home to attend Youkai Academy. She was so very proud of her oldest daughter, but was feeling anxious about letting her leave home. She also knew that the girl would be under enormous pressure from everybody in the village. Mizore was a hero, and so was Tsukune. As the daughter of two heroes, Fumusume had a lot of expectations to live up to.

Thinking of her daughter soon going off to school made Mizore smile for a reason only those closest to her would expect. Shirayuki-Aono Fumusume would be debuting at Youkai Academy years and years ahead of any child of either Moka or Kurumu. Mizore would be the first one to attend the Halloween festival with Tsukune as the mother and father of a student, and not just as alumni. Mizore could not help but smile when she felt like she had won.

Mikogami looked out the window of his office, taking in the sight of the sprawling Youkai Akademy campus. It had grown up over the many years. The facilities had to be repaired and even rebuilt more than a few times, but he knew it had been worth the expense.

The campus was quiet at the moment. Classes were out until the new school year started, leaving the buildings empty, except for the memories that had soaked into them. Even the staff was gone for a few days, enjoying some time away from their desks and paperwork.

Mikogami had made the academy his life's work. He had performed services and traded favors to build it up and keep it running. He had employed over a century of knowledge and experience to establish the original campus and its enshrouding, protective barrier. His first classes had all been small. The first few years had been filled with violence and disappointment, and they had only been a warm up for some of the things that came to pass in the many years that followed. There were no bodies in the campus graveyard. The markers there were memorials for all the students that had not survived their time at the academy.

Mikogami looked out over his creation as the sun was setting and felt a deep sense of pride. He had lost students to violence. He had lost students to pride and fear. Some had died, others had simply run away. Many had just failed to see their education through. He had lost so many, and that truth weighed down on him, but he had not lost most of them. Most of his students had graduated, able to learn the most important lessons that would help them survive in the larger world. He counted each and every graduate as a victory.

The Sun was almost behind the horizon as Mikogami smiled. He was proud of all that he had done with his academy. He was even more proud of one student that had taken the Board Chairman's dream and made it his own. In a few days the new year would begin. His once secret school was now an elite institution that people hoped their children would be invited to attend. In the main corridor of the school there was now a trophy case, one that was protected by solid construction, an impressive set of wardings, and the fierce pride of the student body. The school's teams were filled with champions. Human students that trained against youkai went into competitions with their bodies conditioned for victory and their hearts filled with confidence. Though the youkai members of the sports clubs were restricted in when they could compete, they knew that it was their support that made it possible for their human team mates to do so well.

The new first year class, the largets ever, was going to have humans making up almost half of their numbers. Among them would be some of the grandchildren of the schools greatest alumni. Living proof that Mikogami's dream had made it out into the world and was continuing to spread. The boy he had helped shape would be taking over the school. It was the proof that his life's work and energies had been well spent that filled him with a powerful warmth. He had made his mark on the world, and was content with that. The Sun finished its descent beyond the horizon, its light faded from the empty office.

End.

….authors note:

At times writing is like an addiction. It can be something I cannot resist. An Omake or two may pop up in the future, but for Tsukune and family, it is time to let them enjoy the private happy lives they have earned..

I would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have read my hacked out work. I know it has been long journey, with many stalls and side trips, but it is time for me to finally let come to an end. I thank you all for your support and feed-back over the years, and I hope you will come back around when I finally get another project up and running, either here, or through Amazon for kindle.

Bright Blessings and best wishes to all of you, and to all of yours.
