A/N: I struggled with this chapter, and changed the ending multiple times. I hope I picked the right one, haha!

"Okay, Tess, you can't open your eyes until I say so. No peeking!"

"Garfield, what is this about? Is there something I should not see?" Tesla couldn't even see anything if she opened her eyes, his hands were over them.

"It is not like that, friend Tesla!" Starfire chimed from her left. "It is a surprise! Humans do it so that when you see the thing, you are filled with joy all at once!"

Tesla stumbled slightly. "Whoops, my fault, watch the step." She grinned at Beast Boy's humor. He always had a joke up his sleeve. "Okay, okay, stand there, and keep your eyes closed until we say so!"

Beast Boy's hands left her face, and she squeezed her eyes shut. She heard his steps stop in the middle of whatever room they were in and then:

"Okay!"

"Yes, Tesla! You may open your eyes to see now!"

She obliged, and had to stifle a gasp at what she was seeing.

The room was one she'd never seen before, with electric blue walls. A mural of a Nebula stretched across the Western wall, behind a queen sized bed with soft gray bedspread. A set of hookups were on the opposite wall, and a deep blue couch with lots of pillows facing the wide window to the North.

"This rom is amazing," she exclaimed, taking a couple steps forward. "What is this room for?"

"It's for you, silly," Beast Boy said with a chuckle, grabbing her by the hand to pull her farther into the room. "Look, we even have hookups so you can bring your stasis chamber in! Cyborg says he have it hooked up in a jiffy. And he'll even bring a computer in for you if you want."

"All of this is for me? The whole room?"

"Well, yes, my friend!" Starfire floated over to her. "You cannot keep sleeping in the living room, correct?"

"I didn't know I was in the way, I'm sorry…"

"No, you got it all wrong, Tess. We made you this room because we wanted to give you your own space." Beast Boy released her hand to gesture to the room again.

"Beast Boy even painted it especially for you!" Starfire said cheerily, to which Beast Boy began to blush and stammer that it wasn't a big deal.

"You painted this, Beast Boy?" Tesla said, floating over to the Nebula wall.

"Yeah, well, it's no big deal, it's just a hobby and...well, do you like it? I was thinking I'd make something electricity related, but that seemed so obvious, and I don't even know if you like space so it was kind of a shot in the dark and I understand if-"

"It's amazing," she said, cutting him off. "It's perfect. I couldn't ask for anything better."

Her feet left the floor as she turned around, flitting over to him in a heartbeat to pull him into a hug. She felt him stiffen, and thought she had made a mistake, but after a second he relaxed again and she felt the hug returned warmly.

"Hey, that's just what friends do, huh?" His breath felt warm on her hair, and his voice was pleasant. She found herself in a very contented state.

"The cavalry has arrived!" Cyborg shouted, sliding in through the doorway, toting Tesla's stasis chamber in on his shoulders. He was followed by Raven and Robin, so now all the Titans were here. "What up, Tess? You like your new room?"

Tesla released herself from the hug, feeling slightly flustered. "Y-yes, it's really great. Thank you, everyone."

Cyborg gave her a thumbs up, and carted her stasis chamber over to where the hookups were hanging from the ceiling.

"Listen, Tesla, we're really glad you're here with us," said Robin, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. He placed a titans communicator in her hand. "We want you to take this, in case you're ever in need of our help and we aren't around. And, when we locate some of your memories, I've programmed them to pop up in the communicator so you'll know right away. Pretty neat, right?"

"Yes, that's amazing, thank you!" She tightened her grip on the communicator, feeling the weight of it in her hand. She smiled, thinking about the communicator, the room, Cyborg hooking up her stasis chamber, Raven healing her when she's hurt, Robin searching for her memories, and Starfire and Beast Boy helping her make new ones…

This was where she was meant to be, she knew it. When her father is found she was certain that he would tell her the same.

"Hey, Tess, what's with the thinking face?" Beast Boy said, bumping her chin with his hand. "Don't you know what this means? You're a Titan now!"

Many hours later, Tesla lay on her new bed. Sleep felt different without her chamber, but part of her knew that she would need both the chamber and regular sleep every now and then in order to function at highest capacity. She stared up at her Nebula wall, which glowed slightly in the dark to act like the real sky. She wondered how Beast Boy had managed that. Her mouth formed a smile at the thought of the changeling, almost involuntarily. He was a very warm soul indeed. To her left, she could see the sunset out her enormous window, sinking down below the horizon slowly. She had retreated early to recharge, as she had not slept properly the day before when she collapsed and she wanted time to process all that had happened. It had been about a week and a half since she had come to live with the Titans, and they had been so nice to a complete stranger.

She let out a sigh, letting the uneasiness roll off her chest. Truth be told, she was having a hard time sleeping because she was afraid to close her eyes. She wasn't sure what memories would come back or when, and what if they weren't good ones? What if she discovered something horrible about herself?

She sat up in her bed, twirling her hair around her finger nervously. She wanted to get out of the tower, to explore Jump City and see how it all made her feel. She wasn't sure the Titans would understand. They might tell her she wasn't ready.

Tesla pushed off the bed, floating over to the closet where Starfire had left some clothing she thought she might like, saying "You can't wear your uniform from the lab all the time!"

Well, maybe there was one who wouldn't.

Beast Boy had just retreated to his room. Tesla had gone to bed early, claiming to be tired, and the others all had their own thing tonight. Being a social guy, he really didn't get it, but he knew his friends all liked their alone time. He was just about to turn on his TV for a night of solitary gaming, but he was interrupted by a knock on the door. Probably Cyborg, he thought with a smile. He was always down to play a game.

"What happened to doing your own thing, Cy-" He was cut off by the sight of somebody who was definitely not Cyborg. "Tess-"

"Shh!" Tesla covered his mouth and flew close to him, pushing him back into the room and letting the door close behind her. "I don't want the others to know I'm here."

"Oooookay," he said, removing her hand from his mouth. "So what's-"

He stopped himself, taken aback by her appearance. She had worked her turquoise curls into a teensy ponytail, leaving short, stray curls to frame her face stubbornly. Then he noticed she was wearing something...different than usual. It must have been something that starfire gave her. He looked her up and down (he couldn't help himself), taking it all in. The long-sleeved off-the-shoulder dress suited her quite well, and paired nicely with a pair of galaxy leggings and black flats. The purple outfit made her amethyst eyes sparkle.

"What's with the outfit?"

She floated back from him, seemingly embarrassed. "I-I tried to be somewhat fashionable, or at least what the internet said to do. Does it look bad?"

"N-No! Not at all, you look great actually." Really great, he wanted to say. Stunning, gorgeous even. "I just meant, why?"

"Please, Garfield, you're the only one who won't say no. Please don't say no."

"Well I can't say no if I don't know what you want," he replied, pushing back the dirty thoughts. It momentarily occurred to him that not only did she not think that way, but that she might not even know what...that is.

"I want to experience the city, I want to see it with my own eyes. Can't you please take me? Please?"

"Uh, tonight?" He pulled on the collar of his jumpsuit. "You wanna go out with me tonight?"

"Yes! I have to see everything myself, Garfield." She took his hands in hers, staring up at him with her big purple eyes. "Please."

"Uh, well, I don't know if that's…" Oh man, she was too cute. And she got all dressed up. He couldn't leave her hanging. "Eh, alright, alright. Just-Let me get changed, I'm not dressed for the city."

"Okay!" She said, a big smile on her face. She didn't budge. It occurred to him again that she probably didn't think the way he did.

"Um, I know you don't want to go, but would you, like, turn around?"

"Why?" Good question. Normally he was the exhibitionist type who was ready to give a show, but it just didn't seem right.

"It's just polite, because nakedness is inappropriate, you know?" He gently turned her around, and she seemed to think about something. He pulled out an old Gorillaz t-shirt, that actually happened to be clean, and a pair of nice jeans he hadn't worn in a while. As he started to change she piped up again.

"I see, is it because of sex?"

Crap. So, she did know, although he highly suspected she had simply googled it when her back was turned. "Uh, y-yeah, kinda, that has something to do with it, I guess."

He pulled on his sneakers and turned to look at her. Her back was still turned.

"Uh, I'm done. Are you ready?"

She whirled around, her flowy skirt twirling, and gave him a big smile.

"Yes, I'm ready. Are we flying?"

"We can, probably the easiest way to sneak out." He walked over to his window and began fumbling with the lock.

"Garfield?"

"Yeah, Tess?"

"Why is is inappropriate? Sex, I mean?"

This was not happening. He couldn't even face her, his face was so hot. "Uh, well, it's just a very private thing, I guess. Humans tend to, uh, link it to really strong emotion and stuff." This was so awkward. He finally unlatched the window and pushed it open.

He made himself turn back around and offered his hand to her. "I can't really transform in this outfit, you mind flying us?"

"Not a problem," she said, taking his hand. He felt like static electricity was climbing up his body, and suddenly he was floating.

"Woah! D-Don't you need to hold on tight?"

"I can control your waves whether or not we are touching," she said, squeezing his hand. "However, it's strongest if we are at least holding hands."

Beast Boy took a deep breath and pushed off the windowsill, clinging to her hand tightly. At least they weren't talking about sex anymore. He set the window slightly open so they could sneak back in later.

"Alright, Miss purple-eyes," he said as they drew closer to each other, floating gracefully through the air. "Where to first?"

Beast Boy did the only thing he good think of and took her to the movies. She had sat spellbound through all of Mutant Zombies 3, and even discussed it in detail with him as they left. Now they were sitting outside the pizza parlor, and he couldn't help but stare at her. He'd never seen someone trying pizza for the first time before, and it really was a sight to see. Well, maybe it was just her.

Luckily for him, she hadn't mentioned sex again. He wasn't sure his 19-year-old hormones could handle another talk like that. At least he knew she wasn't exactly naive, and it made him relax a bit. He supposed having the internet at your fingers would probably make it impossible to be oblivious.

"Is there anywhere else you want to go?" He asked as she finished up her pizza. He handed her a napkin and she wiped her face. He saw some glowing data reflected in her eyes for a moment before she looked back at him.

"Garfield, is this what you would call a date?"

He probably should have seen that coming. "Well I suppose that depends on your definition of a date." Be cool, Beast Boy. She doesn't know what she's saying.

"A friendly or romantic appointment or engagement, or go out with someone with whom one is romantically or sexually interested. Right?"

He almost choked on his soda. Great, this again. "Ah, well, I, uh...I mean a date could be just friends, or something, that's kinda what I meant."

"Oh, I see," she said. Did she sound disappointed? He couldn't even tell. He scratched his head trying to think of a way to steer the conversation in a different direction.

"Well, whether it's a date or not I'm sure we could find someplace to go."

He peeked at her, trying to read her face. She caught his eye and he felt his breath catch as she smiled at him. "You know the city better than me." She said. "I'll follow you anywhere, Garfield."

There was no denying it this time. No matter how many times he tried to deny how he felt or tell himself it was too soon. No matter how much he tried to convince himself not to get attached.

He had definitely fallen for her.

He didn't know why he picked here. Maybe it was because of the ache in him to erase the bad memories here, or maybe it was because he wanted to remind himself of why he wasn't supposed to get attached to strange girls who show up out of nowhere. Whatever the reason, they were there now, at the amusement park where he had fought Terra. It had since been returned to it's former glory, and they were now looking at a fully functional amusement park filled with people. There was an awful lot of people here for 10:00 at night.

"Hey, Tess, stay close to me, alright? I don't wanna get separated." He reached out and pulled her close by the hand. He felt almost guilty for enjoying the warmth of her hand. "L-let's start over here."

The place Beast Boy had taken her was loud and boisterous, full of people. Couples and families walked by with various items-big teddy bears, ice cream cones. Suddenly Beast Boy's hand was on hers and pulling her close.

"Hey, Tess, stay close to me, alright? I don't wanna get separated." His hand was warm. She liked to hold it. "L-let's start over here."

She let him lead her somewhere while she studied his face. He'd been flustered most of the night, as if she'd said something to embarrass him or something. She had felt slightly disappointed at his reaction to asking if it was a date. The definition seemed to describe the situation accurately. Did he not think they were friends? To be honest she didn't understand the difference between friendship and sexual interest. The way he had described it earlier made it sound like they were both agreements of strong emotional bond. She decided against bringing it up, though, as she didn't want to upset him. She tried googling it, but the results were...inconclusive.

"Hold up," he said suddenly, drawing her closer to him so a group of people could squeeze by. She smiled a little. He was warm and comforting, gentle and kind. All signs of a good friend, right?

Suddenly she felt something grab her backside, pushing her harder into him and making her squeak. She turned quickly to see a tall blonde teenage boy, who chuckled at her. His friends chuckled, too.

"Hey, sexy lady, why don't you ditch the Titan freak and come hang out with some real men tonight?"

"Hey, back off her, man," Beast Boy said, using one arm to wrap around her waist, pulling her to the side, and the other to push the guy away. She quickly scanned what she could to figure out that the grabbing of the ass was a demeaning and rude gesture.

"Or what? You gonna squeal to the Titans on me? There's nothing you could do to me here without causing extra damage, anyway. She at least deserves to spend the night with someone who doesn't smell like wet dog."

"What did you say?" Beast Boy said, visibly bristling. He stepped towards the boy, who puffed his chest back at him.

"I said, you smell like wet dog!"

Tesla felt her face flush with rage. Who was this insolent man-child to say such things to her friend? She looked him over quickly, analyzing his weaknesses. Physically there were few, but emotionally he was clearly unstable. She figured from reference files that this boy was insecure about himself, which led to his unsavory remarks. She stepped forward, bypassing Beast Boy's outstretched arm before he could stop her. She flicked her wrist, sending the boy five feet in the air, only to fall flat on his own butt.

"I don't know what your issue is, but Ga-er, Beast Boy does not deserve to be spoken to that way." She sniffed at him. "And I prefer the smell of wet dog to the out-of-season dollar store cologne you and your jerk friends wear, anyway. Pick up a book and you might learn how to truly speak to a girl."

With that, she turned on her heel and stalked off with Beast Boy, linking arms on the way. She peeked behind her, only to see the boys sitting in stunned silence. She smirked. Confidence. That was the feeling she had right now.

"Woah, Tess, I think we lost 'em." Beast boy gently grabbed her arm to pull her aside. "That was awesome, you totally humiliated those guys! Those were some sweet burns, dude."

His face got serious.

"But all joking aside, are you alright? Those guys are jerks, and I know you don't really know how rude they were, but it can't have felt good."

"I am alright," she said. "I'm just glad to be away from them. Garfield, did that rude boy's comments hurt you? I hope you know you don't smell unpleasant."

"Hey, what? Nah, they don't bother me. Some guys are just jealous of all my awesome, that's all." She sensed from his heart rate he wasn't being truthful. She wondered whether she should mention in or not. She studied his face, eyes turned away from her, big smile but furrowed brow. If her emotional sensors were calibrated correctly he seemed almost...hurt.

"Can I make a confession?" She said.

"Uh, yeah, sure, I guess." He seemed flustered again.

She leaned closer to him to whisper in his ear. She felt his heart rate spike. Then, she whispered...
