You decided to meditate; it's been so long since the last time you meditated. You found an old candle and placed it on the ground. You shut the windows so no one could see you interact with fire. Then you sat crossed legged on the ground, you bended a small spark and lit the candle. You closed your eyes and began to focus on your breathing. The candle flame grew and shrunk with each inhale and exhale.
As you meditated you let your mind wander. You thought about your cherry blossom tree, but didn't linger on the thought. You thought about your brothers, you still haven't found any sign on them.
'Together in Ba-Sing-Se' you remembered what Kaito said. 'I know they're somewhere in this city' you thought hopefully.
You were soon thrown out of your thoughts when you heard a door slam and loud footsteps. A few seconds later Zuko walked in as you blew out your candle. He was obviously frustrated but strangely silent.
After a few moments you finally spoke "you never answered my question" you said softly but with confidence.
Zuko gave you a confused look, you sighed, "does your damn destiny involve me?" you asked as you avoided eye contact,
Zuko was shocked. "Kana...I..." he trailed off.
"Answer me honestly" you almost snapped, "do you really think Azula will let me in the palace, or how would your father feel about you dating an orphaned firebender raised by an earthbender and a waterbender" you sighed as your tone got softer "I know you want to go home but do you even know why?" you asked.
You knew your words were harsh but they had to said. Zuko was unable to speak.
"I love you, Zuko, so much more than you can imagine, but I'm terrified of what will happen when you catch the avatar, I know I'm being selfish but I'm terrified of losing you" you finished as a few stray tear rolled down your face.
Zuko dropped to his knees next to you and pulled you into his arms. "You're right Kana, and I'm sorry" he said as he buried his face in your neck, you could tell he was crying. "I love you so much, and I do want to go home. But regardless of what happens, I'll always love you, even if I do catch the avatar, I'll spend as much time as I can with you on your island" Zuko took a deep breath to control his crying "I don't want to lose you" he held you slightly tighter.
Both of you pulled away from each other, red-faced and eyes overflowing with tears.
"Will you really be able to spend time with me, when you aren't banished?" you asked as you sniffled.
Zuko nodded "I won't have to be at the palace all the time, I would be able to spend most of my time with you" he said as he wiped a tear off your face.
You smiled and looked up at Zuko, his face held a look of pure love. After a few moments he spoke "Kana, you are so beautiful"
You giggled as you sniffled in an attempt to stop crying, "you must really love me, because I'm an ugly crier," you said as you wiped your face.
"You could never be ugly" Zuko replied.
You smiled, Zuko picked you up and brought you to your be mat.
"I love you Zuko," you said softly as Zuko laid down next to you
"I love you too Kana" Zuko said as you cuddled up to him and he wrapped his arms around you "and Kana" he paused, so you looked at him curiously "you are my destiny"
As lame as it sounds all you could think of to say was "oh Zuko" you were speechless.
"One day I'll be the firelord" Zuko mused, "my father and Azula will have no say and you'll always be by my side"
You smiled as the two of you cuddled until you fell asleep.
Or at least that's what Zuko thought. Once he thought you were asleep, he carefully slipped out of bed, gathered a few items and walked out the door careful to not wake up Iroh.
As soon as you heard the door shut you got up, grabbed your dual fans and leapt out the window. You spotted Zuko running down an ally. Silently you followed him.
'Zuko I'm seriously trying to understand why you're doing this but why did you have to this tonight' you sighed.
You figured out that Zuko was going to Lake Laogai where the Dai Li's hideout was. You thought for a second that Zuko might have heard you because he suddenly turned around; fortunately you were able to hide before he spotted you.
You followed Zuko through a maze of hallways and rooms till he stopped in a large room where Appa was chained to the floor. You watched Zuko from the shadows. Zuko was really trying to steal Appa. You finally figured out that he was wearing the blue spirit mask.
'I thought he lost that' you mused.
Zuko was attempting to unchain Appa and you were about to reveal yourself when you heard Iroh. "So the blue spirit? I wonder who could be behind that mask?" Iroh asked sarcastically.
"What are you doing here?" Zuko asked in shock.
You jumped down from your hiding place. You landed between Iroh and zuko. "I could ask you the same thing" you replied for Iroh.
"Kana! I...I can explain" Zuko panicked.
"Theirs no need to its pretty obvious" you replied as he looked down in shame "I'm not mad at you for trying to do this but seriously you couldn't stay with me for one night, did earlier mean nothing to you?" you yelled in anger and sadness.
Zuko was about to speak when Iroh chimed in "what do you plan to do now that you've found the avatar's bison? Keep it locked in our new apartment? Should I put a pot of tea on for him?!"
"First I have to get it out of here" Zuko replied. You sighed.
"And then what?!" Iroh yelled, "You never think things through! this is exactly what happened when you captured the avatar at the north pole! You had him, and then you had no idea where to go!" Iroh yelled.
"I would have figured something out," Zuko snapped.
"No! If the avatar's friends didn't find you, you would have frozen to death" Iroh yelled in frustration. Zuko has a very thick skull nothing gets through to him.
"I know my destiny" Zuko snapped.
"Really? Is this the same destiny with me? I believe you said that I was your destiny," you said strongly.
That caught Zuko off guard. "You are my destiny, I just need to choose the path," Zuko said.
Iroh ignored Zuko last comment and said, "Is it your own destiny or the destiny that someone else tried to force on you?"
"Stop it Uncle! I have to do this!" Zuko yelled as he became less confident.
"No you don't, you never have to do anything. It's not your destiny if you must do it, it's your destiny if you chose to do it" you said strongly.
"Prince Zuko I wish you would listen to Kana she speaks only out of love and she is wise beyond her years. Prince Zuko I am begging you, it is time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big questions: who are you? And what do you want?" Iroh said as he calmed down.
Without hesitation Zuko said, "all I want is Kana and to go home, but all I need is Kana"
"Zuko let's go home" you said as you reached for his hand.
He surprised you when you pulled you into a tight embrace. He whispered an apology.
You escaped from lake laugai. The three of you stood on the shore as you watched the sun rise on the water. Zuko held you close as Iroh put a hand on his shoulder.
"Prince Zuko you made the right choice" Iroh said softly.
"I know uncle" he sighed. "I know"
You hugged Zuko burying your face in his chest. Iroh walked away leaving the two of you alone. Zuko leaned down to kiss your forehead. "Kana" he whispered, " I never lied to you, you really are, all I need." Then he threw the blue spirit mask into the lake.
