(Kaito )

You were sitting by the fire with Jet and Daisuke. Normally you would be bickering with Jet while Daisuke makes fun of you but you just weren't feeling up to it. You were worried about Kana, this morning she wasn't herself, and then she skipped dinner, you couldn't help but worry. You noticed that Daisuke and Jet were talking in hushed tones.

"Kaito! Kaito! Come quick" Aang yelled as he ran over.

You jumped up, "what's going on?" you asked.

"Its Kana" Aang said gesturing for you to follow, "hurry." You ran after Aang with Jet and Daisuke following closely behind. "She's here," Aang said as he slowed down, "What do we do?"

You fell to your knees next to Kana, she was lying on her side, she was breathing but she wasn't conscious. You checked her pulse; it was weaker than usual but not bad.

Your eyes widened in shock as you noticed blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.

You turned, "Jet go get a bucket of water, Daisuke get a towel," You picked Kana up and started to carry her to her tent, "Aang set up her bed and grab the pillows out of my tent" you ordered. Everyone did as they were told.

You looked at your little sister; her body was limp in your arms. You were so worried. When you entered Kana's tent you saw that Aang has already made a makeshift bed for her and was waiting for your instructions. You laid Kana down, but didn't pull the covers over her yet. Seconds later Daisuke ran in with an armful of towels. You heard voices outside the tent as Aang left to go help Jet.

Daisuke sat next to you, "any idea what's wrong?" he asked.

"I'm not sure, I'm going to see what my water healing can do but I really don't know what's wrong" you rambled. "It could be anything." You weren't thinking clearly.

You heard footsteps approaching just before Jet and Aang ran in with two buckets of water. You soaked one of the towels with water then wiped the blood away from her mouth. You noticed that Haru, Sokka, and Suki were watching with concerned faces while Toph listened with a worried expression, you were relieved that the little freedom fighters and Tao were asleep; you'd rather not worry them if you could avoid it. You used your bending to cover your hands with water, you held them over Kana and they started to glow. Everyone was silent. You used your water healing to try to pinpoint the issue. Everything seemed fine until you check her rib cage.

"Well?" Jet asked impatiently, you knew he was worried so you ignored his tone.

"She has two broken ribs, there's some internal bleeding too. I can heal her but it's going to take some time"

(Zuko's POV)

Two days later you were flying back to camp, you were so excited to get back to Kana and tell her what happened, she'll be so happy that Katara didn't go through with the revenge plan. Plus it seemed like Katara was a bit more civil towards you.

As you approached the camp, only the freedom fighters and Tao were around, everyone else was missing. No one greeted you when you landed, you pet Appa as thanks for all of the flying he did. Then you walked around camp, looking for Kana. You ran into Jet, he was pacing in front of your tent. He didn't notice you.

"Hey Jet" you said, "What's wrong?" you asked as you saw his worried expression.

"It's Kana" he said, he was about to continue, when you pushed past him and into the tent.

Kana was lying in a heap of blankets and pillows. Her small body looked even thinner and paler than usual. Daisuke was checking her pulse and Kaito was asleep in the corner of the tent.

You fell to you knees beside Kana, "What happened?" you asked in a panic.

"Kaito says she has two broken ribs and some internal bleeding, he's been healing her but it takes time." Daisuke replied sadly, after a moment he added, "she was awake for a while yesterday but Kaito says that the internal bleeding did a lot of damage, it started right after you left."

You were completely shocked, how could this have happened? You picked up Kana's hand it was soft and cold. Suddenly Kana whimpered in her sleep, almost instantly Kaito woke up and rushed to her side.

"When did you get back?" Kaito asked as he bent water around his hands and began healing Kana.

"Just now" you replied, never taking your eyes off of Kana, "What exactly are you doing?" you asked with interest.

"Well her broken ribs caused some internal bleeding which is what I'm trying to heal, it's difficult because it isn't a visible wound" he explained, "I set the ribs two days ago and the healing is really helping that but the internal bleeding is tricky."

You were about to speak when Jet walked into the tent he looked upset. Suddenly you heard the reason that Jet was upset.

"How do we know she isn't faking it!" Katara yelled.

"Katara this is serious" Sokka argued.

"I can't listen to that anymore," Jet mumbled.

You looked at Kana as you absently squeezed her hand. After a few moments you felt Kana squeeze back. You nearly jumped, making everyone look at you as you carefully cupped her face in your hands. Seconds later Kana's eyes fluttered opened.

"Sis!" Kaito said, "You're awake!"

"Why is everyone looking at me like I have a tail?" Kana asked, you couldn't help but laugh, you were so relieved that she's ok. "I don't have a tail. Do I?" she asked when no one responded. You couldn't help but laugh.

"You've been unconscious for two days" Jet said.

"How did you break two ribs?" Daisuke added.

"I have two broken ribs?" Kana asked as she tried to sit up but fell backwards; you caught her and supported her. She looked at you curiously, "When did you get back?" she asked.

"A few minutes ago" you said, "I never should have left" you added.

"Anyway… Yes you had two broken ribs they should be healed now," Kaito said, though Kana's attention was clearly on you. You carefully wrapped your arms around Kana, careful to not hurt her ribs. Upon seeing your caution Kaito spoke, "Zuko you can relax," then he turned to Kana, "you're probably going to be really sore but your ribs should be healed"

Kana nodded.

"So the real question, how did you break two ribs?" Daisuke asked.

Kana thought for a moment then sighed, "I have no idea"

You tried to remember the few days before you left; it couldn't have happened at the Boiling Rock, and it didn't happen during your date, for a second you wondered if you hurt her when you were in bed… but then you remembered, "The fight with Azula" you said.

Kana looked shocked for a moment, "You're right, she kicked me in the ribs"

"How did you forget that?" Kaito asked.

"I don't like admitting she's better than I am" kana mumbled.

Without skipping a beat you said. "No one is better than you" Kana smiled at you.

"Well you better take it easy, Aang is going to want to leave now everyone is back" Daisuke said, "Get some sleep sis" he added as he left the tent motioning for Kaito and Jet to follow. After saying goodnight to them you were left alone with Kana.

She maybe a bit out of it and clearly in pain but she hasn't forgotten where you were, "So what happened?" Kana asked nervously awaiting your answer.

"We found him, he's retired, he lives with his mother and he leads a pretty miserable life. I really thought that Katara was going to kill him, but at the last moment she decided not to" you replied.

Kana sighed, "Good, well not the part about the miserable guy but I'm glad that she didn't kill him, Katara isn't a murderer."

The two of you stayed silent for a while, just enjoying each other's company. You were terrified of holding her too tightly but every time you loosened your grip on her, Kana would cuddle closer to you, or pull you closer. A few times she winced but she seemed to ignore it, it only made you worry.

As of sensing your worry Kana turned to you, "Zuko you're not hurting me," she cuddled into you and turned on her side, instinctively you pulled her closer. You were about to speak but she cut you off, "I know what you're going to say, but you're hurt and I wasn't here for you. " You had to admit Kana does know you well; and you were going to say that. Kana continued, "but I didn't think I was hurt this bad and I didn't tell you, besides I can take care of myself."

You smiled, "I know that you can take care of yourself, but if you're allowed to take care of me, I'm allowed to take care of you" you said as you pressed your lips to her forehead.

Kana looked up at you and smiled brightly her smile is amazing. "I guess that's fair"

"I missed you," you blurted without thinking.

Kana giggled, "Oh Zuko I missed you too," she said as she nuzzled into your chest.
