First order of business: I just submitted my first Tribute to someone else's fic! To follow along with Clover Adams and all the rest, read jeanthehorse98's fic about the 625th Games. Last I checked, there were still slots for one or two girls and a few boys, if you'd like to join in. Emmalie got a sponsor too, but I forgot to write her POV, so it'll be in the next chapter.
Aurum POV
Sweet mother of pearl, if I have to drink one more bit of that water… I thought as I stared at my little well. It hadn't killed me… yet, but that stuff was nasty.
"Hey, uh, Hyden? Seeing as I'm the only one left from One and everyone's rich there, could you maybe send me some water? And maybe some food?" I asked. It was worth a shot. I left off the part where everyone hated me because I was a thief and they were more likely to send the other Tributes a spear that could only kill me. I was utterly amazed when I saw a parachute up in the dingy clouds.
"No way. Thanks!" I cried. I jumped up and snagged the parachute. The box underneath it was a little treasure trove. I sifted through it gleefully.
"Water! YUSS!" I shouted triumphantly. I held the bottle over my head and did a little happy dance. I drank a mouthful and laid the rest on the ground.
Now what do we got to eat? I picked out a jar of jelly, but there wasn't any bread. All right, it's better than nothing, I thought. The other package held a chocolate bar.
"Chocolate?" I blurted out. "I mean, oh boy, chocolate!" I did like chocolate, of course, but I was trying to survive here. Trust the fat cats in District One to send me jelly and chocolate to live on. I broke a piece of chocolate off and dipped it into the jelly.
"Yum yum, thanks," I said as I ate. Wouldn't want One to think I didn't want any more sponsors.
The last thing in the box was a small hunting knife. I hoped it was big enough to scare away other Tributes, because killing someone with that thing would be messy. Hopefully the odds were in my favor and nobody would come into a nasty thorn patch.
Nero POV
I had to get a move on. The Games were going by fast, and when they were done, I wouldn't be allowed to rip people up anymore. I still would, but I'd have to be sneaky. Climbing around sharp rocks wasn't my style, so I was roaming up and down the hills, looking for those last few Tributes.
I heard something in the distance. If it was a Mutt, that would do. If it was a Tribute, even better. I walked after the noise. It was coming from a hill that looked to flatten off into a plain. I held my shortsword at ready as I started up.
"Yum, yum," the voice said. All right, it's a Tribute, I thought. Thorn bushes were all over the hill, and I swatted them aside with my sword. The Tribute came into sight. It looked like the boy from One. Lucky for me, I was off to one side and he was eating, so he didn't notice me. He bent over and took something out of his box. I charged in with my sword raised. The boy looked up at the noise of me crashing through the bushes and jumped to his feet. He pointed his knife at me.
Ooh, I'm scared now, I thought. The thorn bushes pulled at me and scraped my skin, but I kept going and slashed across the boy's chest. He ducked back and fell backwards. I stomped on his knife arm and pinned it. I smashed the other foot down on his stomach. He gasped and tried to push me off. I stuck my sword right below his waist and twisted the foot on his arm, snapping the bone. His struggles grew weaker as the blood flowed. He coughed and kept tugging at the sword with his other hand. I pulled it out and started poking his chest with it, giggling whenever he jerked. I marked a trail of cuts from his hips to his neck and started back down. This was what I'd been waiting for. Time to give the Capitol the show they wanted.
The boy grew pale and started to still. Aww, he's almost dead, I thought. Soon I'll have to go kill someone else. That was when something slammed into my back and tore through my midsection. The boy stared at my chest, and I followed his gaze. There was a huge knife sticking out of me. I couldn't seem to breathe, and I started to feel dizzy. As I toppled forward, I saw the boy smirking at me. Well screw him too. Now we were both dead.
Eltara POV
Two cannons went off. Maybe Nero finally picked on someone his own size. That left eight people for me to kill or outlive. I had enough supplies to wait a few out, but I was a Career. I had responsibilities. I didn't want to take on the Career pack alone, even if Dath was the only actual Career, so I kept an eye out for other Tributes. I'd been making my way methodically around the Arena for most of the day. Starting with me and Nero's splitting point, I started spiraling out in a pattern that should cover most of the Arena eventually, if the Cornucopia was the center and our camp was a little ways off.
My main targets were Emmalie, Aurum, Nairobi, and Erwin. There was a good chance one of them was dead now. I tried to guess their strategies as I continued on my path. Aurum was charismatic. He was probably fishing for sponsors and might have a weapon by now, though I could still take him. I didn't know how Emmalie wasn't dead. She must be hiding somewhere. When I found her she'd be easy. Nairobi was the same. Erwin was a solid boy. There was no shame in fighting smarter rather than harder. I'd try to take him by surprise.
I looked at the trees around me. All the black husks made it hard to keep myself oriented.
Did I already pass that tree? I thought. I continued on. Twenty minutes later I was at that same tree. All right, I know I passed that tree, I thought. I slashed at it with my sickle and stomped away in a completely different direction. Ten minutes later, there was that stupid tree again.
"What the heck? Are you moving the trees?!" I yelled at the Gamemakers. "Knock it off!" I stormed off. If I see that tree one more time, it won't be a tree much longer.
Nero and Aurum died pretty close together. I'm gonna say Nero died first because I want Aurum to at least be able to watch him go.
12th place: Nero Augustus
Nero was a big ol' bully. I don't know what Eltara saw in him. Maybe that's why she picked him- she knew he wasn't a threat. Anyway, he died like his submitter suggested. He was too busy poking Aurum to notice the Careers sneaking up on him. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Thanks Dakota77 for a Tribute that actually belonged here.
11th place: Aurum Niteo
I thought about making Aurum win because Tributes from One or Two win more often than others, but Aurum wasn't actually a Career. Is Emmalie the only thief left now? They're not doing so well. Aurum wasn't a killer, so it was pretty much inevitable. I'm reluctant to write violence of the kind some of these Tributes would do, so I forced myself to write at least one death like that. I must, however, note that Aurum would have been pretty numb from from adrenaline and shock near the end. He remained only aware enough to gloat when Nero died first. I forgot to write Aurum's submitter, so thanks sir or madam for Aurum. I liked Aurum. He was cheeky. If only he and Ruby had met in a romance fanfic.
To answer a question from the reviews, I don't know how many I'll get done, but I plan to keep going with these until I get to the 74th Games. I will have two breaks from continuity:
1. I am going to keep the canon Victors, but they won't appear much since I don't want to mess with them. I'll skip the years they won. However, I am throwing out known numbers of Victors. In other words, any District can win any year, even if they're from Twelve and someone from Twelve already won. I want everyone to have the same chance.
2. President Galba isn't as intrusive as Snow. Capitol meddling will be kept to a minimum. Unless your Tribute is Titus or something, the Capitol won't help him or hurt him. Mutts attack mostly randomly and disasters will be even.
