After Nicolas' departure Elsa released a heavy sigh, one born of exhaustion and guilt. She had lost men today, good men. Ones with wives, children. All of which she would now be required to write to personally, expressing her sorrow for their loss and sending them provisions to keep them sustained.
In need of fresh air the royal exited her room to an empty portion of the deck, leaning on the hand carved, detailed railing, to over look the water.
"Shilling for your thoughts?"
The familiar voice tore the queen from her inner thoughts and shifted her gaze to the redhead, still caked in dirt and debris. Anna offered a soft smile as she took up the space beside her friend.
"Really Elsa, you look awful, what's up?"
The queens icy gaze returned to the water.
"Men died today Anna... Good men, with families."
"I know, but its war..."
"No.. it wasn't war Anna. The war hadn't started. This was.. this was my choice. I came here of my own selfish accord."
"Wait you came here for something other than the war?"
Frost crept across the wood below the guilty woman's fingers. "Yes, Anna. Good men lost their lives today, they died not in the duty of war but because-" She started to trip over her words as her mind raced. "Because!" Her gaze turned cold and she fell silent, "Because of you."
Anna looked taken aback for a moment, she felt as though she'd been struck in the face. "M-me?"
"Yes! You! You took off in the middle of the night! You came all the way here- ALONE!"
The queens accusatory tone backed Anna into the ropes and she was beginning to panic. "W-Well no one asked you to come Elsa!"
"You stupid little girl." Elsa spat.
"Excuse me?"
"Do you ever think of anyone but yourself? Do you ever stop to consider that your actions don't just affect you?"
"Of course I do that was my goal Elsa! I wanted to stop this war!"
"Well you STARTED it didn't you?"
Anna's retort caught in her throat, as if Elsa's words had wrapped themselves around her neck and squeezed the fight out of her.
"You didn't think that crossing the seas into enemy territory, dressed as an assassin, wouldn't have consequences?"
"I didn't..but..I just.."
"You single handedly started a war because you wanted to play hero."
"Thats not true!" Anna cut in, offended by the prospect.
"Really? Then what could have possibly possessed you to put such an ill conceived plan in action?"
Anna gritted her teeth, fists clenched. "Well isn't this the pot calling the kettle black."
"Excuse me?"
" Calling me a stupid girl, when you're so blind you can't even see something right in front of your 'better than thou' royal face!"
Elsa's Eyes narrowed.
"Glare all you want but it's true. You think I came here to play hero? You think I wanted history books to say my name? For everyone to know who I am? You're quite far from the truth 'your majesty." Anna's tone left little room for misconception, it was obvious she was angry and hurt.
"Well don't you? I can't see any other reason why you would do such a thing!" Elsa snapped back. Now who was on the ropes?
"Oh you don't? Can't think of ANY other reason why I'd risk my life to keep YOU and your people out of war?" Sea green eyes rolled with disgust, it had been so obvious what her motivations were.
Elsa had no clue, and there fore kept her mouth shut as Anna dug her verbal claws into her.
" We used to be best friends. We grew up together. You were everything to me, and even after you tossed me to the side to bury your head in your sorrow and studies I still remained tethered to you. There is not a moment when I look at you that I don't feel my heart skip a beat. There isn't a single time when I hear your voice that I don't just become enthralled with what ever it is you have to say. I close my eyes, I see you, and when other palace dwelling girls were day dreaming about kissing the stable boys I WANTED TO KISS YOU."
Tears slid down the woman's cheeks as her confessions spilled from her mouth. The queen stood shocked, frozen as it would seem in bewilderment.
"I didn't know for the longest time, what was wrong with me. Why I was so obsessed with you. Why I got so jealous and angry when suitors would kiss your hand. It wasn't until I knew I was alright risking my life to save yours that I understood Elsa... I'm-"
"Don't. Don't say it." Elsa cut in.
"Why?" Anna retorted, almost angry the woman seemed to care little for her heartfelt confession.
A soft pink lip fought quivering as the blonde turned her gaze from the other rather quickly.
"Because if you say it...it makes it real...and I'm not sure I can handle that right now.." Her voice was barely above a whisper as she too confessed.
Arrow to the heart.
Anna nodded. "Yea. Yea, I'm sorry your majesty. I guess I didn't stop to think about how my actions and pain affected you. How selfish of me."
"Anna thats not what I-"
"Good night, My queen." Anna said with a bow as she hastily retreated from sight.
The sudden absence left Elsa reaching for Anna, but left her with nothing but the chilly night air, and a heavy heart.
"...Anna..."
I guess the cold does bother you.
