Chapter Eleven: Troll in the Castle

It was Halloween, and I was a little nervous. This would be the first time I had ever spent a holiday away from my family. When Percy and I got off from school on Halloween, we always used to go to Mom's work and help her sell candy. The three of us always managed to sneak some candy in for ourselves too. But now I was an entire ocean away from my family. Merlin, I missed them so much.

Walking into the Great Hall, I could already smell the pumpkin pie baking. I smiled in spite of myself. Even though I was thousands of miles from my family, I was determined to enjoy my first holiday without Percy and Mom. I sat down at the Gryffindor table and grabbed a piece of toast and some apple butter.

"Hey," Parvati yawned, flopping herself down on my side. "What's up?"

She grabbed a plate and started piling it high with food. Parvati was a girl who would eat whatever she wanted, when she wanted.

"A little early for you, isn't it?" I asked instead of answering.

On a good day Parvati could sleep till ten.

"Food won out," Parvati retorted with a wide grin, biting into a sausage. "But then, it always does."

"I'm shocked you don't keep food hidden in your trunk," I snorted jokingly, stealing a piece of bacon from Parvati's plate.

I grew scared at the glint that entered her eyes.

In Charms, Lavender and Parvati were partnered, I was with Neville, and Lilly was with a Hufflepuff boy named Zachariah Smith. Let us suffice to say she did not look happy. We were all practicing the Levitation charm.

"Wingardium Leviosa," I said, giving my wand a swish and a flick like we'd been practicing.

I nearly squealed in joy when my feather floated a few inches into the air. Of course, my concentration had to break, and I dropped my feather.

"Well done, Miss Jackson," Professor Flitwick said with a small smile. "Why don't you take five points for Gryffindor. It seems you and Miss Granger are the only ones to have gotten it."

"Thank you, Professor," I said, a large smile stretching across my face.

"So it's swish then flick, right?" Neville clarified, pointing his wand at the feather.

I nodded and watched Neville perform the spell. We both grinned at each other as it floated an inch off the desk top.

"Good job," I grinned.

Neville and I fist bumped then went back to practicing.

Our practicing was interrupted by Hermione and Ron arguing again.

"You're saying it wrong," Hermione snapped at Ron. "It's Wing-GAR-dium Levi-O-sa, make the GAR nice and long."

"You do it, then, if you're so clever," Ron snarled back.

I groaned and buried my head in my hands. Couldn't they just back off of each other? Do they always have to argue?

Hermione rolled up the sleeves of her robes and pulled her wand out.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Their feather rose up and hovered, several feet in the air.

"Oh, well done! Everyone see hear, Miss Granger's done it!" Professor Flitwick cheered.

I saw Ron's face and sighed. It was bright red and angry. Something very bad was going to go down.

"It's no wonder no one can stand her," Ron said loudly to Harry, Seamus, and Dean. "She's a nightmare, honestly."

I gritted my teeth and saw Lavender ready to attack Ron for bad mouthing Hermione. That was just uncalled for.

Hermione must have heard Ron too, because she went running past the five of us.

"Go after her," Neville sighed, watching Hermione run into a girls' bathroom.

Lilly, Lavender, Parvati, and I waved good bye and ran after Hermione into the bathroom.

Hermione had locked herself in a stall. We could all hear her crying from the stall.

"Hermione come out," called Lavender. "Ron's just an idiot."

"Go away!" Hermione shouted. "I know you all agree with him."

I instantly felt bad. Lavender, Parvati, Lilly, and I weren't that close with Hermione, but we hadn't meant to hurt her. I would never mean to hurt someone's feelings like that, because I know exactly how it feels. Percy and I had always been excluded at our old schools. We were always the new kids that no one wanted to hang out with. That must be how Hermione was feeling right now.

Parvati was about to say something, but I shook my head.

"Hermione," I said. "We're all really sorry for making you think that. We honestly do like you. Do you want some time to yourself?"

"Yes, please," Hermione sniffled from inside the stall.

"Okay," Lavender said. "We'll come check on you later, Hermione, alright?"

"Yeah," Hermione said softly. We all left.

Instead of going to the feast after classes, I went to check on Hermione by myself. I brought my guitar along with me. Whenever I was upset, Morgan would always play me a song to help me feel better, and I wanted to do the same for Hermione. When I got there, Hermione was sitting in the corner, wiping her eyes. At least she had come out of the stall.

"Hey," she said softly.

"Hi," I replied, matching her volume. "You mind if I play a little bit?" I gestured to my guitar case.

"Go ahead," Hermione said, shrugging her shoulders and pulling her knees to her chest.

I pulled the guitar Morgan had gotten me out of the case and started to strum the tune Morgan always played for me.

It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word
And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back when you call me
No need to say goodbye

Just because everything's changing
Doesn't mean it's never been this way before
All you can do is try to know who your friends are
As you head off to the war
Pick a star on the dark horizon and follow the light
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye

Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye

"Did you write that?" Hermione asked, scooting closer to me as she finished.

"No," I said. "My friend, Morgan, he always sings it to me when I'm upset."

"It's nice," Hermione said.

"Yeah," I grinned. "It's from Prince Caspian, a muggle movie."

"I heard that was good," Hermione replied, her lips curling up in a small smile.

"The best," I agreed. "You know, you're actually really awesome, Hermione. Lav, Vati, Lilly, Nev, and I all like hanging out with you. Ron's just a jerk."

"Thanks," Hermione said, smiling wider. Suddenly, she froze.

I turned my head to where she was looking and screamed. There was a troll. A giant troll in the bathroom!

The troll made a grumbling sound and swung its club at Hermione and me. She sreamed, and I pushed her out of the way, just avoiding getting hit by the club.

"Hermione! Nina!" someone shouted from the doorway.

I turned my head to see Ron and Harry with their wands out, pointing at the troll. Together they dodged in and out of the troll's way while Hermione and I did our best to keep as far from it as possible. Harry jumped up onto the trolls back and shoved his wand up the thing's nose.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Ron shouted as the troll started swinging its club madly to get at Harry.

The club flew from the troll's grasped and levitated above its head. Ron cancelled the charm and the club went crashing down, rendering the troll unconscious. I didn't want to take any chances, though. picked up one of the pipe's that had broken off in the troll's rampage and slammed it down, sharp end first, into the troll's chest. There was a sharp gasp.

I looked up to see all of the professors staring at me and Professor Quirrell sitting on a broken toilet. Professor Snape bent over the troll just as it exploded into gold dust.

"Well, that's definitely dead," he murmured.

In the middle of the pile of dust was the troll's heart. I could feel the bile rising up in my throat. That was the grossest thing I had ever seen. It had to be at least the size of my head!

"Miss Jackson," Snape continued. I looked up. "Seeing as you put in the killing blow, the heart rightfully belongs to you."

"Keep it," I said, completely disgusted by the thing. "I'm sure it's useful for something, and I really don't want to look at it."

Professor Snape raised an eyebrow at me, but bent down again to wrap the heart in a think cloth he magicked into existence.

"What on earth were you thinking of?" Professor McGonagall reprimanded us, stepping forward.

"Hermione overheard someone saying something rude about her earlier, Professor," I said before anyone else could speak. "I came here to see if she was okay. Ron and Harry knew we didn't know about the troll and came to warn us. It was really no one's fault."

"Well-in that case...," Professor McGonagall paused. "Well, I still say you were lucky, but not many first years could take on a full-grown mountain troll. You each win Gryffindor 5 points. Professor Dumbledore will be informed of this. You may go."

That night, I recounted the tale to Lavender, Parvati, Neville, and Lilly, and in three different letters. One to Mom, one to Percy, and one to Morgan and Diane.
