…..
"I'm nervous. Are you nervous?" Lily Evans wrung her hands together as they approached the house that had just popped into existence from seemingly nowhere.
"No," Luna grinned at her best friend and reached for her hand, "just ready to actually make a difference." Lily nodded and they crossed the empty street to the house that was protected by the Fidelius Charm. Dumbledore, Secret Keeper, had given them the address that morning.
This would be their first meeting with the Order of the Phoenix. Lily Evans had heard rumors of others who graduated Hogwarts before her going on to join the Order and she wondered if any of the faces would be familiar to her. She knew for a fact that Alice, Frank, Mary, Remus, Peter, James, and Sirius would be in attendance. Remus, Mary, and Peter had already been to an Order meeting and Frank had been attending them for at least six months now that Alice had mentioned.
Luna and Lily had travelled separately, having been out together that afternoon and arranging to just meet their men here. When they reached the front door Lily reached up with only the smallest trace of reluctance and knocked thrice on hard oak.
It was opened almost immediately by a tall blonde girl. "Lily Evans?" she asked as a smile stretched across her face. "Blimey! I didn't believe James when he said that he'd finally gotten you to go out with him."
"Yes," Lily cringed, "it's true. I'm still half-convinced he Jinxed me," the two girls laughed as Luna glanced between them uncertainly – this beautiful girl was a stranger to her. "It's good to see you, Marlene."
"Good to see you, too! Even better to see Sirius though," she motioned with her head down a hall as she ushered Lily and Luna into the house and closed the door behind them. "I'd forgotten how handsome he was. Only gotten more gorgeous over the past year it seems. I can't keep my eyes off of his ass any time he walks by me. Do you think he'd agree to having a pint with me at the pub down the road after the meeting is over tonight?"
Luna decided that she hated this trollop as Lily barely managed to hold back a laugh when she replied, "Actually, he's married."
"What?" Marlene screeched, "Sirius Black? Married? To who?"
"That would be me," Luna smirked and held up her left hand to show off her sparkling wedding band.
Marlene turned about five shades of red as she spluttered, "Oh Merlin! I'm so sorry! I had no idea – I didn't mean – er- "
"It's fine," Luna lied while mentally plotting the girl's death. "I'm Luna Black, by the way, as Lily didn't introduce us."
"Marlene McKinnon, and let me just add that I'm extremely embarrassed," she ran a perfectly manicured hand through her golden locks as she offered an embarrassed chuckle. "I was in Gryffindor a year above Lily and Sirius. I've been in the Order ever since."
They reached a large room at this moment with a giant table and many chairs around it. Many people were already there, seated and standing, broken off into small conversations amongst themselves. Sirius and James appeared to be in a serious conversation with Fabian and Gideon Prewett. Sirius' head snapped up when she entered the room, as if he'd been waiting for her, and his eyes softened when they met hers. She gave him an obvious wink before turning her attention back to Marlene who was still talking.
"…but not every Order member attends every meeting. I mean, they can't exactly be back here if they're in the middle of an important mission or doing some scouting and whatnot. Mostly my job is to get all of the information possible from my patients and relay that to the Order. We've been finding that a lot of them are the victims of Dark Magic without even realizing it."
"Um, I'm sorry, but I must've missed something. Your…patients?" Luna asked.
"Yes, I work at St. Mungo's. A lot of times the Death Eaters put spells on their victims that Charm them into forgetting the truth of what happened to them. I specialize on healing minds so Dumbledore has me searching minds of possible victims for the truth. Of course, even when I uncover the truth I leave the lie that the Death Eaters put on the victim just because it's usually kinder and easier. If I attempted to force their mind into remembering and accepting the truth there could be irreparable brain damage."
"That's incredible, Marlene. You're doing that after only one year in Healer training?" Lily asked in awe.
"Well I started Healer Training in my last year at Hogwarts and I'm not fully qualified yet, I still work under more advanced Healers. But I'm accelerated in my program because I went into the training program knowing what I wanted to specialize in. Most Healer Trainees take years because they'll spend time in each department before deciding on one field to concentrate on."
"James started his Healer training last month," Lily's voice held an obvious note of pride and she stood up a little straighter as she said this.
"I know, he told me just before you got here. Right after I spit butterbeer out of my nose when he told me that you were his girlfriend," Marlene shook her head in chagrin. "Come on, I'll introduce you to some people. Oi! Moody, this is Lily Evans and Luna Black; Sirius' wife."
"Nice to make your acquaintance," he growled sounding like he actually wasn't happy to be meeting them. "Am I right to assume that you've both been personally invited here by Albus Dumbledore?"
"Yes," replied Lily and Luna in synchronization.
Mad-Eye Moody gave another growl and limped off in the opposite direction. "So that was Alistair Moody?"
"The one-"
"-and only." Said two voices from behind her. Luna jumped and spun around to find the identical grinning faces of Fabian and Gideon Prewett.
"Lovely to see you again," Fabian took her left hand and brought it to his lips for a light kiss.
"Ah, and I see the rumors are true," Gideon took her hand from Fabian and tapped her ring with his forefinger.
Luna was beaming back at the brothers; her great-uncles. "You two seem to be in slightly better spirits than when we last met," Luna noted, recalling how stern they had been when speaking to James at his home during the New Years Eve party.
"Yes, well, look at all of the new recruits fresh out of Hogwarts this year! Benjy Fenwick was a Ravenclaw, all of the graduating Gryffindors are here, Emmeline Vance joined a few months ago…I reckon we stand a good chance now," Fabian gave her one last smile before moving around her to speak to Aberforth Dumbledore who had just walked in.
"Ah, here you are," Sirius appeared beside Luna and handed her a glass of butterbeer. "Do you know everyone? You know Aberforth, of course, and the Prewett twins, that's Elphias Doge, Edgar Bones…blimey, I never realized this was such a massive organization. It appears that Dumbledore didn't need us to join quite as desperately as he let on," Sirius snarled.
"Sirius," Luna warned as she placed a gentle hand on his arm.
"I'm sorry, love, you're right. We belong here," he kissed her forehead swiftly then tugged her over to take their seats. Albus Dumbledore had just arrived and this seemed to be the signal everyone had been waiting for as they gathered around the long rectangular table.
"Marlene?" Dumbledore asked as the room quieted.
"Three in the past month, Albus," the bubbly girl turned abruptly serious as she gave her report. "One was a young girl, only nine years old, she's a muggleborn. The Death Eaters must've seen her performing magic because they attacked and killed her parents. All she remembers is that there was a house fire and that the next door neighbor dragged her out of the flames but her parents were consumed. She remembers nothing of what actually happened."
"Where is she now?" asked Alice and Luna's head swiveled to find the face to go with the voice. Alice was on the opposite side of the table and a few chairs down, seated between Frank and Fabian.
"She was adopted by magical parents. She's adjusting well," Marlene said curtly. "The other two were a married witch and wizard who were abducted by Death Eaters and brought before Lo-Lord – you-know-who. He asked them to join him and they refused. As far as I'm able to discern they were not harmed but they came to St. Mungo's to be examined anyway because they were worried that he had tampered with their memories. After all – why would he just let them go when they refused to join him?"
"Why indeed…" Dumbledore trailed off in thought.
"I have news on that front," a new voice piped in as Remus strode confidently into the room with Mary trailing just a step behind him. When Remus reached the table Luna could feel the atmosphere change. "It appears that, like us, Voldemort has been attempting to recruit. Those who refuse his offer are left unharmed – a sign of good will on his part. But if they do not change their minds within a certain undetermined amount of time then Voldemort goes after their families in punishment for denying him."
Each face around the table had matching looks of shock and disgust. "And your source?" inquired a grave Dumbledore.
The only answer Remus gave was a slight nod in affirmation – as if he knew who Albus Dumbledore was thinking of. Fenrir Greyback. The name popped into Luna's head immediately and she knew that Remus must already be working with him. That must also mean that Greyback is the one to do the punishing on Voldemort's behalf. A shudder went through Luna as she imagined Greyback ravaging an entire family because an estranged aunt or uncle refused Voldemort's request.
The meeting continued and Luna was surprised that she and Sirius were not yet given missions. Once everything had concluded and people had broken off into smaller groups chatting away Luna approached him. "Erm – Professor?" she called. Dumbledore turned toward her with a slight bow and she continued, "You said that Sirius and I were needed in the Order but I'll be leaving in a few weeks and you've not given us a mission."
"My dear," Dumbledore smiled knowingly, as if he had anticipated her asking this question, "You two have the most important mission of all, or did you not hear when it was assigned to you?"
Luna frowned – she'd listened ardently to each word spoken, carefully memorizing each one in case they ever turned out to be important. "I believe I would have noticed something important being directed to me," she snapped.
Amused by her cutting tone his smile twitched a bit at the corner and he said in a quiet whisper, "Lord Voldemort is recruiting. I would imagine that you and Sirius are very high on his list. Regulus is Sirius's brother, Sirius is a pureblood, Sirius has a wife he feels needs to be protecting which is a weakness Voldemort will attempt to exploit, not to mention the fact that he already believes Remus Lupin to be on his side, who is best friends with Sirius. Your mission, dear Lily, is to face Lord Voldemort, refuse his request, and fight to capture those who will seek revenge on you and your loved ones."
"But – Professor! You're putting my friends in danger!" she hissed.
"I am not. There is no way I can prevent Lord Voldemort approaching you except by placing you in hiding which I am certain neither you nor Sirius will accept. It is unavoidable. I am not putting your friends in danger, I am warning you that they will be inevitably put into danger when you refuse the Dark Lord. You must be prepared for this. When you refuse you must protect those closest to you at all costs."
"What about Sirius? Will his family be safe if he refuses?" Luna knew that Sirius appeared to hate his family but they were still his family and she would protect them if she could.
"I do not believe the Blacks will be in any danger when Sirius refuses the offer to join the Death Eater ranks. They are purebloods and they have another son who volunteered willingly enough," His electric blue eyes narrowed only slightly when he spoke of Regulus.
"Very well. I'll discuss it with Sirius this evening. I do appreciate your advanced warning, Professor. I guess I never imagined that I would be so much as a blimp on Voldemort's radar, let alone a prime target."
"You are a prodigious witch with half-blood status, much like Voldemort himself mind you, you married a pureblood wizard, and you are young which to a man like Voldemort will mean that you are easily influenced."
"I am not!" She began to argue hotly but Dumbledore interrupted.
"Forgive me, I should have said, which to a man like Voldemort mistakenly will mean that you are easily influenced. You are as stubborn and as passionate as your mother's family," he tipped his head toward the Prewett twins, "I can see the Weasley in you," he clearly meant this as a compliment and Luna felt her cheeks flare red with, ironically, the famous Weasley blush which reached the tips of her ears.
"Thank you, Professor. Have a good evening."
"And you as well, Mrs. Black."
…
"Do you remember when I told you that Voldemort would try to recruit you?" she asked softly as they got ready for bed that night.
"Yes," Sirius answered with a frown, "you asked me to be polite to him," he scoffed.
"That's right. Well, apparently, Dumbledore believes that he will try to recruit me also. When you and I refuse he'll send someone after our friends and we need to stop them. That's our mission for now."
"Using our friends as bait?" he growled, reacting the same way Luna initially had when Dumbledore had told her this.
"No! They are going to be in harms way no matter what! That's the point, Sirius! When he asks us, and we refuse, that's when we'll know to keep a closer eye on them. It's more like Dumbledore has given us a way to be warned." She dropped her robes to her ankles and stepped out of them, kicking them to the side and leaving her only in a bra and knickers.
Sirius licked his lips, momentarily forgetting what they were talking about. "You know, tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the day we met. Do you remember?"
Luna giggled. "How could I forget? I woke up in the Hogwarts Hospital Wing to four annoying teenage boys gawking at me like an animal at the zoo." She poked him in his chest and he let himself fall back on the bed. With a graceful wave of her wand Luna vanished all of his clothes from his body except the pair of dark blue boxers which now had her attention.
"Mmm," he reached forward to hold her hips and pull her gently onto him, guiding her to straddle him. "The day the most gorgeous woman I've ever met literally fell from the sky and almost landed directly onto my head," his voice had lowered and he watched attentively as she reached behind herself to undo the clasp of her bra.
Nothing thrilled Luna more than watching Sirius watch her and become more aroused. She felt his length harden against her, two thin pieces of fabric separating him from her core, and he groaned when she let the sheer material fall from her breasts. Sirius sat up and captured one rosy nipple between his teeth causing his wife to tip her head back with a gasp and clutch her fingers into his hair.
"I love you," she rasped as his hand came up to play with her other breast.
"Care to show me just how much?" he teased and emphasized his words with a slow thrust of his hips, lifting Luna off of the bed. Her hands scrambled to his shoulders so she could steady herself. She flashed him a smoldering smirk once she found her balance and reached a hand down to slide his boxers just far enough to release his now throbbing erection. Her fingers deftly pulled the crotch of her panties to the side and Sirius slid home. Because that's what she was to him in every way that mattered – his home.
….
"That was…." He panted, "I mean….wow," he leaned over to kiss her as they lay side by side in bed a while later. Sweat coated the back of her neck and her long dark hair stuck there as if she'd just finished a rigorous cardio exercise. Luna smoothed her hair to the side and sat up, fanning herself with one hand.
"Why thank you, love," she was just as breathless as he. With a grimace she felt the cum he'd spilled inside of her slickening the insides of her upper thighs and she hurried to the loo to wash up.
Immediately after sex Luna would wash herself and take the pregnancy preventing potion. She and Sirius hadn't used the contraception charm in a while –there was no need as long as she took this potion each time faithfully after intercourse.
There were other potions which witches could take regularly to prevent pregnancy but Luna, as scatterbrained as she was, had preferred this potion because she hadn't trusted herself to regularly remember at the same time each week to take her potion. It was much easier if she just immediately gulped down this one after sex.
As she reached into the cupboard above the sink for the shining pink potion she paused. What if she didn't want to prevent a pregnancy? She couldn't take Sirius back to the future with her, but could she possibly take their child? The images filled her brain suddenly; a black haired boy with grey eyes giggling as he ran through the grass. Reading him bedtime stories. Cradling him in her arms as a newborn. Or perhaps it would be a girl. Long dark hair like her own, sneaking away with her mother's wand to practice magic before Hogwarts. Learning to ride a broomstick.
Her heart ached for that future. In a moment of sheer desperation and emotional turmoil, Luna uncorked the vial and dumped the entire contents down the sink. Perhaps this would be the night that she conceived a child with her husband.
…
Upon waking the next morning, Luna felt only slightly guilty. She hadn't told Sirius about her plans because she knew he would never agree – he wouldn't want her to raise their child without him. Nor would he want her to go back to the future and have to explain to her friends and family about being pregnant with the child of a long-dead convicted murderer.
She shook her head and rationalized that this was not a decision he could make for her. This was what she wanted. It was her body and her future. He would never even know. There was also the chance that she wouldn't get pregnant at all. She had only a few weeks left in this time and there was no guarantee when it came to pregnancy.
Sirius entered the kitchen, interrupting these thoughts, and she smiled up at him, surprised to find herself seated at their small dining table with a hot cup of tea in her hands. She'd been so immersed in her own mind that she hadn't realized she'd even left the bedroom.
"Something wrong?" he asked.
"Hmm? Oh, no. Why?" she asked dreamily.
"Normally you have coffee in the mornings. Black. Like your name," he sent her a wink and flicked his wand to summon his own cup of coffee.
"Just felt like tea this morning, I suppose. It reminds me of my mum," she confessed shyly.
"You miss her," he stated.
"I miss them all. But I'll miss you the most once I've gone," her voice cracked a bit on the end Sirius put an arm around her shoulders.
"You'll be just fine. Promise me something though, Lu-Lu," he used his agile fingers to slip under her chin and tilt her head up toward his. "Promise me that you'll go on to live a happy and fulfilling life in the future. That you won't dwell on me or mourn me for too long. Promise me that you'll try to meet other blokes, get remarried, and be happy," he begged.
"Why?" she asked.
"I want you to be happy! I want you to have children and grandchildren. I want you to take all of the love that is in that tiny petite body of yours and give it to someone who is worth it," he pleaded.
Not sure herself if it was the truth or not, she was left no choice when she looked into his large eyes except to say, "I promise."
…..
"Where are we?" she giggled that night as he Apparated her, blind folded, to what sounded like a noisy pub.
"SURPRISE!" Luna shrieked as Sirius removed the blindfold and she discovered that she was, in fact, in a noisy pub. Filled with all of her friends she'd made that year.
"Happy birthday!" announced James just before blowing into a noisemaker and exploding some confetti over her head.
"It's not my birthday," she argued with a laugh.
"Well, it kind of is," argued Alice as she linked her arm in Luna's and began dragging her toward what was clearly the girl's table. "Today was the day, one year ago, that you became a part of our lives."
The four of them – Mary, Lily, Alice, and Luna – each took a seat around the table and noticed that they were wearing the matching bracelets gifted to them by Lily at Christmas time. "I never take it off," Alice admitted.
"I don't either," Mary agreed proudly. "It's not like I'll ever get any permanent jewelry from Remus," she joked with a smile but her friends could hear the wistfulness in her voice. The little piece of Mary that did want to get married someday.
"Maybe he can just buy you an engagement ring and you can wear that forever," Lily suggested as she held out a hand to accept the margarita being handed to her by the waiter.
Mary seemed to ponder this thought for a moment before asking Luna, "Is it true? Remus said you only have a month?"
"A little less than," Luna said sadly. "But I don't want to talk about that tonight."
Following her cue, the others just sat back and had a good time. None of them mentioning the goodbyes that were quickly approaching them.
…..
Remus and Mary left the pub first. After being caught giving Remus a blowjob in the loo by a scarred-for-life Frank, Mary had taken her boyfriend back to her flat for the night.
Peter hadn't been invited as the group had quickly come to realize that Luna did not like the bloke.
This left James, Lily, Frank, Alice, Sirius, and Luna. The six of them stumbled out of the pub at the same time, around 2 o'clock in the morning. James was humming Odo the Hero while a giggling Lily dragged him along.
That was when they struck.
No less than eight Death Eaters appeared out of the blackness of the night and engulfed the six friends. Luna was suddenly blinded. "Sirius!" she cried out, groping through the blackness for him. She tripped over her own two feet and fell but hard arms caught her and she was Apparated away.
She regained her sight in the grandeur of a large sitting room. She was kneeling on a soft plush carpet and a sober-up potion was being shoved roughly into her hands which she gulped down without a second thought. Instantly she was alert enough to look around and search for her friends to find them all in the same situation as her – kneeling with sober-up potions in their hands.
Before her, to her horror, on a chair that looked more like a throne, sat Lord Voldemort. Younger, handsome almost, not at all like the images she'd seen in the books she read of the Second Wizard War. No, this Lord Voldemort had not yet made all of his Horcruxes. His eyes were red, with slit-like pupils, and his skin was a waxy unhealthy hue. Yet she could still see some of the handsomeness of the boy Tom Riddle in him.
The next thing she noticed was that they were surrounded by a horde of masked Death Eaters. Somewhere in this room were Regulus Black, Severus Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange, Lucius Malfoy…but she couldn't discern one from the other under their grotesque disguises.
"Welcome," his voice was soft, almost a hiss, and it made goosebumps prick up all along Luna's skin. As if his voiced caressed her in an indecent and unwelcome way.
"Where are we?" asked Lily in a firm but trembling tone.
"Where you are is not as important as why you are here. And you," Lord Voldemort was still speaking directly to Lily, "will keep silent in this room as is your place in society, muggle-born."
Lily opened her mouth to give an angry retort but James had reached over and squeezed her hand gently; a reminder that this man would not hesitate to kill them all if Lily insulted him now.
"As it so happens," continued their host, "Five of you were brought here tonight; four pureblooded and one half-blooded to be offered glorious positions in the ranks of my Death Eaters," he opened his arms wide to direct their attention to his dark empire. "Half-bloods are an unfortunate outcome of the union of a pureblood witch or wizard with a muggle, muggle-born, or half-blood mate," he walked forwarded and stopped in front of Luna. "You, Luna Black, are not responsible for the poor decisions of your parents and you would be most welcome to have a place here. I have been watching you closely; favored by Dumbledore, a Gryffindor, married to Sirius Black. Yes, you would serve me well. You and your husband are both welcome to join me."
Biting her tongue, Luna said as politely as she could manage, "No. Thank you."
Lord Voldemort chuckled and the Death Eaters were quick to join him. The laughter died when he stepped to her right and addressed Sirius. "Sirius Black. It is no secret that your brother has been working closely by my side. It is no secret that your parents, your cousins Narcissa and Bellatrix, many more members of your ancient and noble bloodline are my supporters. If you join me also I can promise you one thing that Dumbledore cannot. The safety of your wife. Yes, I see the way you watch her in here as if you need to protect her from me," he smiled which was really more of a grimace, "Fear not, young Black, I will not harm your pretty bride. The spilling of magical blood is not something I do without reason and regret. I can promise that if you join me and serve me faithfully no harm will ever come to her. She will be revered and honored by those you see here now."
Sirius doubted very much that thugs like Avery and Nott would ever show Luna the tiniest bit of respect. With a smile that could have fooled anyone who didn't know him well, Sirius answered, "I'm afraid that I must respectfully decline your generous offer…..my Lord." He tacked on the last bit with a raised eyebrow, as if challenging Voldemort. Voldemort's eyes narrowed but his smirk didn't leave his face as he moved on.
"Frank and Alice. You both come from respectable pureblood lineage. You have found each other. Which must mean that you pride your heritage enough to make sure that your children are pureblood and carry on our wizarding legacy."
"I love Alice because who she is as a person; not because of her blood status," Frank interrupted.
Voldemort's hand twitched as if he ached to slap it across Frank's face for his insubordination but he refrained and continued, "Mr. Longbottom is training to be an Auror," he announced to his disciples, "I must be perfectly honest with you, Mr. Longbottom, it would be an asset to me to have someone of your position as an ally. Of course there would be something in it for you as well. Don't you see?" He spoke louder and looked at the faces of those in front of him.
"The muggles of this world have chased us into hiding! They have made wizards and witches to be beings of myth and legend. Before this they made wizards and witches out to be creatures that needed be put down like dogs and burned to death. It is time, brothers and sisters, to retake our rightful claim in this world! To rise up and show the muggles that we will not bow to them!" Cheers and clapping came from all sides. "Can you see it, Frank? Alice? A world in which your children would not have to hide their powers."
Alice looked down, at the carpet beneath her instead of directly at Voldemort. "Of course that would be what I would want," she said and the faces of her friends snapped around to look at her in shock. "But not like this," she continued in her calm way. "I want it to come about peacefully and with reason. Not in unnecessary murder and slaying all of those in my way. I want to show muggles kindness and that there is no need to fear or hate us."
"You are a fool," Voldemort said this quietly, with a little shake of his head, as if disappointed in Alice. "You will not join me?"
"No," said Frank and Alice together.
"Very well. Lastly, I must ask you, Mr. Potter. Of course you have much more at stake, do you not? A girlfriend who is…well, less than desirable for someone of your social standing," he gestured vaguely to Lily. It was clear that Voldemort was not going to invite Lily Evans to join him. "I am not a tyrant. I will gladly let you continue this affair with your muggle-born as long as you also choose a pureblood woman more worthy of you to marry and to give you children. Lily will be treated better than anyone else of her blood status. She will be cared for and looked after."
"Like a dog?" James asked as if he were merely curious. "A loved family pet?"
"Something of a pet, yes," Voldemort agreed mildly. "But my point is that she will be safe if you join me. If you do not…well, I cannot guarantee her survival."
James looked like he was about to jump up and throttle Lord Voldemort. Luna didn't know how he stopped himself from doing just that. "I will not join you," his voice was so loud he was nearly shouting. "I will not join you because Lily Evans is ten times the witch that any of your Death Eaters could ever hope to be. She is not a pet and certainly not a dog. She is bright and beautiful and has more magic in her pinky finger than you do in your whole slimy body!" He roared.
Luna expected him to be murdered on the spot. Brown eyes wide, panting in fear, she looked around for anything that could be used as a weapon. It was only then she realized her wand had been taken from her. As it turned out, however, she needn't have worried. Instead of killing him, Voldemort applauded him.
"Well spoken, Mr. Potter. So much fire! I will give you once last chance to accept my offer…"
"No," growled James.
"Very well. You are free to go."
"That…that's it?" asked Alice.
"Yes, my dear Alice, that is it. You came here invited, as guests of honor, and Lord Voldemort is patient and merciful. You may change your minds at any time and I will happily accept you. Please always remember that you have options. Have a good evening, my new friends," and with a clap of his hands all six of them found themselves once again just outside of the noisy pub; unharmed and wands returned.
And so it was that James Potter and Lily Evans had ONCE defied the Dark Lord.
