Hello... it's me...
A/N: Hey! So this is chapter 7 of my funky fanfic, and soon we will start hearing about Bucky! I don't think he shows up until chapter 8 or 9. Sorry for the delay, my internet didn't work!
Thank you to all my trusty followers, favourites and viewers, this one goes out to you!
Enjoy!
I sat in boredom as we browsed through the clothes in the thrift shop. Really, Steve? Out of all the places you could've chosen to go to, you go to a THRIFT STORE?
I had picked out my clothes ages ago. But right now Steve was trying to find something a little less 'Steve', so that was the hard part.
As I wore black skinny jeans and a grey hoodie, I wondered how hard it would be to retrieve that flash drive. What if someone REALLY liked bubble gum? What if they saw the flash drive behind the gum and went all,"Sweet! Along with two packets of gum, I can buy a flash drive that looks really funky! Yay!"
Either way, Steve didn't seem concerned at all, and he'd finally come out of the changing rooms, wearing sweatpants and a navy blue hoodie, along with some black sneakers. I glanced towards him, giving him a steady nod.
We filed out of the Thrift Shop and made our way to the hospital, shuffling on the clinical white floors as we went to find the vending machine.
As we found it, I felt a pang of dread in my chest.
The flash drive was gone.
But behind us now stood Romanoff, casual clothes and chewing bubble gum. Steve and I had the same idea and before I could blink, he had shoved Romanoff into a little dim room, with me silently following and closing the door.
He had pressed her against a wall, and now they were having an exchange I couldn't possibly be bothered to listen to. I just nodded and glanced around, scanning the surroundings, making sure no one heard this 'friendly' conversation.
My ears perked up at one part though.
"Most of the intelligence community doesn't believe he exists. The ones that do call him the Winter Soldier..."
Fuck.
That's when I lost it and ran towards the two.
"The Winter Soldier?" I demanded.
"Yeah. Why, you know him?"
My gaze turned sour. "Of course I do, he was sent to find me before, but failed."
Now Steve was staring at me. "Hang on, this guy was sent to kill you?"
"I didn't say kill you," I corrected. "I said find me."
Steve blinked several times. "We'll talk about that. Any way, keep telling your story." He said this to Natasha.
They kept talking, but I was drowning it out. That guy was still alive? Last time I remembered, he was sent to return me to HYDRA, but I basically left him half-dead. If he was still alive...
That was when it clicked. The metal arm. The strength. His mask.
Holy shit.
They were after me again. Somehow, HYDRA had found me again. How? I'd kept undercover for quite a while now. Was it because I was with Fury? Oh man.
Soon, they changed their disguises, and dragged me to a mall. Huh. I hardly ever go to malls.
We went up the escalator and stopped at the entrance of some tech store. Apple.
Natasha handed me her phone. "Here," she whispered. "Use this. Pretend you're just some normal teen."
Right. It would be pretty weird if some young girl followed them into the store. Friends? No. I was way too... different for that. So the only option I had was to stay out here, pretending I'm reading some really interesting text message.
Nine minutes later, they both powered out together, and I trailed behind a bit. My footsteps were silent and I sort of felt like I was assassinating people for HYDRA again. Luckily I wasn't.
We went down on the escalator, and I kept pretending to check 'my' phone, some of my caramel strands falling into my face. I wasn't bothered to check up on Steve and Natasha, pretty sure they had everything under control.
We passed Rumlow - which, somehow, I hardly noticed until he actually passed me - and kept walking down the stairs. I had no idea what was gonna happen next, but let's hope it will be good.
"Where did Captain America learn how to steal a car?"
I listened to the amusing conversation Steve and Natasha had, staring out the window and seeing a sign that we'd made it into New Jersey. These witty talks Steve and Natasha were having had been going on for a while now, and I had to use my several years of training to restrain myself from laughing out loud.
They'd told me the plan of where we're going while we'd been driving. We'd go to an Army Base in New Jersey, where we would find out more. I hope we would. Or else this drive would have been basically useless...
In the evening, we arrived, and I hopped out of the 'borrowed' car, gazing around. This was it. I walked towards the fence, Steve and Natasha joining me. Then, without warning, I jumped at the fence and gracefully threw myself over, landing soundlessly. When I turned around, Natasha was staring at me.
"Since when does Charlotte Jaines know how to do that?"
"Since HYDRA forced her to learn." My reply was meant to be a quick, simple quip but it sounded so... bitter.
Natasha shook it off and I opened the fence, leading them in.
It was nice, how nothing had changed. Everything looked like it would've in the 1940s, and it gave me a sort of comfortable feeling. Ironic, considering man that had lost their lives were trained here for the war.
I trudged along a dirt path, spotting a small track of sorts. It looked like where Steve was trained, because his gaze looked so soft as he wistfully stared at the dirt paths.
We found a barrack that Steve 'unlocked' with his shield, and we entered. It looked pretty decent, several desks, and old, crumbly walls holding the room together. However, that was not what we were looking for.
They had kept walking and I had to catch up to find them staring at some photographs. I could only recognise two people. Howard Stark, who was known by everyone back in the day, and Peggy, the girl Steve had told me about. I bet he missed her.
I walked on, finding a small draught in between two shelves. Steve pulled at one of the shelves, and behind the shelf was an elevator door. Huh. Today, S.H.I.E.L.D's elevators look way more modern.
Either way, we stepped in, Natasha finding the needed pin to bring us down. The ride was silent, and I could feel the tension of what we'd find once the rackety elevator stopped.
It dinged, and we all stepped out to find a huge room with several computer monitors and... video cassettes? This was getting weird...
I silently stepped towards the monitors, glancing over at Steve and Natasha. Natasha shuffled over to insert the flash drive into a rather modern-looking slot. The middle computer screen whirred to life with green writing.
"Y-E-S spells yes," Natasha mumbled as she typed. Then, with a smirk, she said,"Shall we play a game?"
She glanced at Steve and then kept going. "It's from this movie-"
"Yeah, I know. I saw it."
Woah. Steve's watched Saw? Huh.
Suddenly, a pixellated image flickered on the screen and a voice I thought I wouldn't hear for long sparked to life.
Zola.
"Accidents happen. HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security. Once a purification process is complete, HYDRA'S new world order will arise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your life."
Steve seemed to have gotten extremely mad, because he punched the monitor and the screen cracked.
But then his pathetic little potato face appeared on another screen. I felt like I should punch his face this time.
"As I was saying..."
I couldn't hear it anymore. This man had me locked up and frozen for years! Hearing his sickening German accent again made me want to stab a vibranium dagger into myself.
"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it."
I shuddered.
"Steve, we got a bogey. Short range ballistics. 30 seconds tops," Natasha's monotone voice stated.
He'd already turned around and thrown his shield at the closing elevator doors. But to no success. We were stuck and in less than 25 seconds we'd be blown to bits.
"Quick, in there!" Steve ran over to a platform and pulled out the bit of metal with ease. Natasha and I jumped in and as soon as Steve had gotten in, the blast happened.
Steve had swiftly put his shield up and blocked the oncoming debris. I had stuck my hands up and made a vibranium coating to detain some of the concrete falling on top of us. We were being buried alive.
The rumbling of the falling blocks of rock had stopped and Steve and I glanced up. Natasha had gotten hit and she was now unconscious. Steve picked her up and carried her in his shield, and I followed on.
Helicopters began flashing their lights. This time, we ran quickly. Somehow, we had actually gotten out of that mess.
Rum low scavenged the area, looking for any bodies. He checked the surroundings and as he glanced down, he noticed footprints. Two pairs, one size 7 and one size 9. He cursed under his breath.
Pierce would not be happy about this. Finally, he connected his comm.
"Call in the asset."
Pierce, of course, was very mad about this. He'd invited the Winter Soldier to sit at his table.
"Three targets, two level six, one unidentified. I want confirmed death on the level sixes and the girl back in 10 hours."
The Winter Soldier did nothing to acknowledge he heard his superior.
But he knew that he had a mission.
Ok, so that's it!
