If I Fell
Chapter 11
"Lana Cullen! Get your butt down here right now!" I yelled from the kitchen when I found the detention notice in her back pack before school.
"What mom?" she whined, walking into the kitchen.
"What in the world I this? Your father is going to have a heart attack! This is the third one this month! I swear he's going to send you away to a damn all girl's school!" I shook my head.
"It wasn't my fault this time, I swear! I was Nicolas Newton. He grabbed my ass in the hallway! I kicked him in the nuts!" she shrugged.
"I'm going to castrate his damn father!" I growled.
"I'll take care of this, but if I find out that any of this is a lie, you're grounded for life and you won't have any form of social media or social life! You'll be watching your brother until you graduate." I gave her my mom glare.
"Mom Carl is 10, he hardly needs a babysitter for him and his weird nerd friends." She snorted.
"All the better then." I shrugged and she shuddered.
"Let's go. I'll drop him off early and then get you taken care of." I grabbed my keys and purse and yelled for Carlisle Jr. and headed out.
Carlisle Jr. had been a very difficult pregnancy for me. I was sick the entire time, gestational diabetes, and he was breach. I was on bed rest 90% of my pregnancy with him. Carlisle had been a nervous wreck, but we'd hired a wonderful nanny for Lana and when she was old enough we put her in preschool, she watched Carlisle Jr., she stayed on after for quite a while to help with house work until she fell and broke her hip. At that time Carlisle paid for her surgery, hospital and recovery as well as someone to care for her, because she'd always taken such good care of us and still always came to the children's programs at school, she was their adopted grandma.
Having the kids close in age was nice as well. Lana was 2 ½ years older than Carlisle Jr. and both of them took after their father in the looks department, Lana did get my nice long wavy hair and petite frame, although not as short. And C.J. was the spitting image of his father and sometimes I think they shared a brain as well. There was no doubt he'd be following in his father's footsteps
Arriving at the school I give Lana the 'mom' look and she scurries off. I walk to the office and ask to speak with the Principle. "Mrs. Cullen, I'm sorry he's in meetings all day today." The snotty secretary tried to tell me. "I realize he's a very busy man, this will take all of five minutes, I know he can spare that for me!" I snapped.
She pushed a few buttons on the phone and then told me to go on in.
I slammed the paper on his desk and proceeded to tell him Lana's side of the story. "Did you even bother to hear her side? Or is it because he's the star quarterback? Do I need to discuss this with Superintendent?" I snapped.
"No, I assure you I'll take care of this right now Mrs. Cullen and that Lana will not suffer any punishment. This is null and void." He smiled sweetly at me. "And what about the boy?" I demanded. "I'll bring him in for a talk after my meetings this afternoon." He assured me. "No, that's not good enough. You were quick to give my daughter a detention for no fault of her own! This boy violated her, touched her without permission, I don't care that he's your son Mike! I want his ass suspended!" I shouted.
"Now Bella, there's no reason for that." Mike stood from his chair. "Mike, we all know your son has had a thing for Lana for years, just as you had one for Jessica." I snapped. "Really Bella?" he questioned. "Look, a 2 game suspension will make me happy and to have him keep his hands off Lana, because next time it's my dad who will pay him a visit." I sighed. "Fine, 2 games Bella. Have a good day." He fell into his chair shaking his head.
FIVE YEARS LATER….
"Lana Cullen." I had tears running down my eyes. My baby girl was graduating. "Bella it's OK, we'll be able to go visit often." Carlisle soothed. "I know, but she won't be here!" I cried.
"Mom, can I drive to the Lodge?" CJ asked. "Yes baby. You can drive, mom is a mess and dad needs to help me calm down." I handed him the keys. "No kissing, that's just gross!" he made a face and Carlisle and I both laughed at our sons expense.
Three months later Lana was off to college and CJ was the only one with us. I'd let him take over Lana's room for all his science stuff and we'd converted the room over the garage into an apartment for when Lana came home with any 'friends' they'd be free to come and go as they please and do what they wanted within reason.
Two years after her being away, she comes home at Christmas with her boyfriend, Thomas. His father his the Senator of Nebraska. He's a very nice young man, smart wants to be a doctor, and he's actually two years older than Lana and in the pre-med program at Cornell. Lana is majoring in music, she wants to be a music teacher. Thomas and Carlisle hit it off right away and disappear with CJ into the study for 'nerd talk' as Lana and I call it and we start preparing dinner. His parents will actually be flying in for Christmas Eve dinner since they have some big meeting, Thomas being an only child they try and spend some time together so we invited them to dinner with us.
Fast forward six years and we're going to be grandparents for the first time. Not for Lana and Thomas though. For CJ and his fiancé of two years Nicole. They're both so busy with finishing they're rounds and rotations that they haven't set a date, but just found out she's eight weeks pregnant. Thankfully her internship ends soon, she's decided to go work in a private practice for now, and CJ likes the hospital and is going to stay on in the ER. They're going to get married after the baby, they've finally decided on a smaller wedding at our house, saving money to buy one of their own. Since they made the wise choice, Carlisle and I are giving them $5000 to use towards down payment. Just like we did for Lana, they had a slightly larger wedding, only due to his father's standing, but his parents paid, because they insisted on the guest list. It was the who's who in Washington D.C.
I was happy for my children. They were where they wanted to be in life.
Lana was teaching in New York, she loved her job and wasn't looked down upon because of what she did, he husband supported her and we visited often.
CJ and Nicole welcomed a sweet baby girl named Raquel. She had little wisps of strawberry blond hair and her daddies blue eyes, she was a good baby who grandma willingly watched often. And of course she had grandpa wrapped around her finger as well. Her first little cold grandpa wanted to call in the CDC, it was hilarious. Once I calmed him down and settled her in her bassinet for a nap, he sat there and watched her for any signs of irregular breathing.
Yes we had our ups and downs and misunderstandings.
But all in all life for us was great.
Our kids were happy and had everything they needed and more, they found wonderful spouses who made them just as happy as Carlisle and I had made each other.
