Chapter 15: Training Begins
A few small groans were made as Don slowly started to come to. Both eyes opened, only to see the black comforter that the olive green turtle is using to cover himself with. Yawning the turtle pushed himself up to sitting position as the blanket had been cast aside, exposing himself to the air. Moving himself to the edge Don planted his feet on the smooth wood floor as he rubbed both eyes to wake himself.
Hunching over a bit he waited for his body to full wake before he stood up, stretching himself. Looking up at the wall clock he found recently Don was surprised to see it was almost noon. This shouldn't have been much of a shocker since most of the time last night he had trouble sleeping because of his first kill.
He had trouble trying to comes to terms with what he did, every time he closed his eyes the man's face would be there staring at him. It was too much for him. Thankfully Gavin came and thanked him for what he did, which helped ease the feeling of guilt within him. And he was glad to know that the human acknowledged their friendship and said he would help him any way he could.
"What the?" Don said as he looked at the table in his room and found a folded up piece of paper standing on it. Walking over he grabbed and unfolded the paper and found a note written on it.
A special session with Dr. Adams has been scheduled for today at 2:00 PM. Do not miss it.
-Oroku
A depressing sigh left the olive green turtle, "Great, I already dread these sessions." It wasn't a secret that Donny didn't like his sessions with Dr. Adams, something about the guy just rubbed the turtle the wrong way. Even though he willingly talked during those sessions he thought it was over with when he came to Foot HQ. Still he was saddened to hear they weren't, even though he didn't know what the point of it was.
Crumpling the note up Don chucked it into the nearby trash bin before going over to the door and sliding it open so he could leave. He had at least three hours before his session, might as well eat and do something productive.
Half an hour later a ding sounded as the elevator doors opened, which prompted Donny to walk out and towards the secure double doors. Recently Donny started to carry a small pouch on his belt, so he could hold a few small things. It helped in his opinion and was thinking about carrying a few more in case he had more things he wanted to carry.
Reaching into the pouch Don pulled out a small ID card, which was a gift from Shredder. It wasn't a joke when it was stated that the genius turtle would have access to the labs. He was given the card so he could come and go whenever he wanted to and didn't need to ask anyone to get him in.
Sliding it through the reader a high pitched beep indicated the doors were unlocked. Placing the card back in the pouch Don went through the doors and into the labs. As usual there were scientist walking around attending to the tasks that were given to them. He just walked right through like he was a regular person. A few people looked over and gave him a few nods, and a few didn't pay any mind. He just continued on till he reached his private work office.
He couldn't help but look over at the nameplate that labeled this work space as his. He felt a little sadden at this fact because it felt like he hadn't really earned this space at all. More like it was just given to him just because, but Shredder told him that he earned it and he just let it be.
Sitting down on the chair Donny the moved the mouse of his computer, taking it out of sleep mode. Pulling up the control panel he accessed the security settings. Deciding to do something constructive the olive green turtle then started to work on the security systems in his computer. He sought out every back door into the system and covered them up, then added many more firewalls to prevent any hackers.
He ran into some trouble but easily was overcome because of the new tech he's working with. But the new speed this computer provided made certain things easier and faster. Finally after a while he managed to have improved his computer's security system up a huge notch. Smirking at the accomplishment, even the most experience hacker would have trouble getting into his system now.
A knock caused him to turn his head, looking at the doorway and seeing Gavin there. The human smiled as he saw his friend in his work space. "You feeling ok?"
Donny nodded at the response, "Yeah, thanks for checking."
He walked in and leaned on the table, "I mean…after what you…"
"I fine, really," Don responded with a sincere look. "I managed to have a good night's sleep, and now I want to just forget about it."
"Ok," Gavin nodded, understanding his friend's request. Sometimes it was best to work past these events and move on. Although he wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not. He then looked on the computer monitor to see what he was doing, "So working on anything new?"
"Not really," he shook his head. "Just upgrading the security on my computer."
"What?" Gavin raised both eyes in confusion as he looked at the computer. "How can that be? Our systems already have the best security system made?"
"Well…mine is custom made and is much more of an improvement than what you all have," Don chuckled some as he explained. "It's like trying to get into Fort Knox now."
"Amazing! Man they said you were good but I didn't think this good. Think about all the things you could do now with state of the art equipment."
"Well I know but…I'm trying to take things slow right now. You know build up to the bigger things," the olive green turtle responded. Which was true, being away from tech for so long made the turtle rusty a bit. So it was best he tried to do small things before constructing bigger projects.
"I understand but hey if you ever need an assistant I'm there for you."
"Thanks," Don nodded as he turned and looked at the nearby clock. He sighed once he saw that it was almost two. "I have to go."
"What's going on?" Gavin asked as he pushed off the table, watching as his friend got off the chair.
"I have…an appointment in a few minutes I have to go to," Don responded. He didn't fell like telling his friend about his sessions with Dr. Adams. He didn't want to advertise the fact that he was seeing a psychiatrist because it sort of presented the fact that he may be crazy to some.
"Ok, well good luck with that," the human said as he walked out of the lab. "If you ever need to talk, just come find me ok?"
"Sure, and thanks," Don responded as he logged off his computer and standing up. They both then walked out of the private room and walked a bit before Gavin had to leave.
"I got to finish some work, so I'll talk to you later."
"Alright see you later," Don nodded as he walked and exited the labs.
Minutes later Don walked down a corridor of doors, each one lead to an office. Others walked passed him, either not paying him mind or just giving him a silent greeting. It was weird for the olive green turtle because it was like he was normal. He got to walk this whole entire building without hiding or have to worry about anyone seeing him.
It was a weird feeling for him and it got hard to get used to it since years of hiding from humans were still there. Shaking his thoughts away Don stopped at a Door with Dr. Adam's name on it. Reaching up he knocked and entered once he was told to.
He entered the small office, which had all the necessities of a psychiatrist office. There was a table with a few wooden chairs. A couch he could sit and lay on. A desk with a computer, which the doctor only used, and a shelf filled with books.
The human was currently typing on the computer as he looked up and saw the turtle. "Ah Junko on time."
"Hi, Doctor," Don responded softy as he closed the door and walked over to the couch. He sat down on it and waited for the questions to start. The sooner he started to sooner it could be done with.
"For today we're going to be doing something different," the human responded as he got up from his chair. Surprising the turtle as he walked passed his clipboard and pencil that was right next to him.
"What do you mean by…different?" he had to ask as he was kind of confused now as to where things were going.
"Instead of talking about your feelings we're going to talk about your medical knowledge," Dr. Adams said as he walked over to his book case.
"My medical knowledge?" Donny said back in surprise, both eyes raised.
"Yes," he responded as he looked through the hard back books that were placed before him. "Because of the …incident that occurred last night it got me curious."
"Curious as to what?" Don watched as the doctor then picked out a book and pulled it out.
"How do you know so much medical knowledge?" he turned and held the book in a manner that the olive green turtle couldn't see the title.
"Why bring that up?" Don asked, curious now as to where this was going, watching as he sat down by the table.
"The way you killed that man yesterday," That caused a flinch to happen with Don, the memory surfacing once more. "I may not be a medical doctor but you managed to cleanly stab the jugular vein. Even if your target is mobile it's still hard to locate for a normal person. This means your knowledge goes beyond first aid, as it seems you know about anatomy. Heck you're probably a doctor depending on your skills."
"I wouldn't really say that," Don shook his head, arms crossed as he leaned back on the couch.
"Why is that?"
"Well…I can only do external medical procedures. I can't do surgeries, well minor stuff, but nothing complex."
"How did you come upon this knowledge?"
"I read books, and looked up information online and learned that way. Plus a lot of practice."
"Hmm…" the human said as he started thinking. "Interesting, so you had no help in your education?"
"No," Don shook his head.
"That's more impressive, than I originally thought," he smiled as he took out some stapled pieces of paper and put them on the table.
"What's this?" The olvie green turtle asked as he got off the couch and walked over to the table and sat down there. Taking the paper in hand.
"Don't open it yet," the human responded. "Like I said this session is going to be different. Right now I want to get a good measure of your medical skills so I want you to do a small test."
"Test?" Don raised his eyes in confusion. Why would he want a full measure of his skill? There had to be something else going on about this.
Before he could answer the good doctor resumed, "I can't really tell you right now, but I just want to get a good idea where your skills are." He then took out a pencil and slid it over. "Finish and then you can go."
That comment caught the turtle's attention immediately, making him mentally smile. He didn't like the sessions and now he was being given a way out. So seeing as no other way around it he decided to go ahead and do the test.
"You have as much time as you need, go ahead and start," Dr. Adams said as he stood up and went back behind his desk.
Donny the flipped the first page and was surprised as he saw a Bizarre set of questions, ones that couldn't classify as medical questions, or were they? His eyes scanned the questions once more as he wanted to be sure he was reading things right.
"What are the eight vital points within the body that can cause instant or slow death if struck?" He mentally read the question as both eyes rose. This was something that set off read flags in his mind. Something just didn't feel right at the moment. "Still…if I can finish I can leave." Drumming the eraser on the table he started thinking. "Instant death…or slow death…Well that's the brain…heart…the spine as well…" He thought as he jotted down the answers on the paper and moved onto the next question.
Time slowly passed as Don continued with the test, being surprised at how hard the questions were. Some were even a challenge to him but yet he managed to answer them the best he could. He really had to rack his brain to think about an answer.
Dr. Adams watched silently as he watched the turtle answer the questions. He mentally smiled as he watched the progress. The test was one that been custom made by himself and the doctors of the building. It was a combination of medical and combat questions rolled into one. A few were basically questions a doctor would find on a test, but the others were ones that had a hidden purpose.
After nearly two hours Don answered the last question and closed the test, and putting the paper down. "Done?" Dr. Adams responded.
"Yeah," Donny said as he got up.
"Good, the test will be graded and you'll know the results tomorrow."
"Ok…" the turtle responded as he headed for the door.
"Wait, take the book on the table with you and study it," the doctor told the turtle before he could exit.
Don turned and gave a questioning look as he looked at the table. Walking over he then picked the book up, reading the title, "Advance anatomy?"
"I just want you to sharpen your mind, just think about it as learning."
"But I already know a good amount," Don protested a bit.
Dr. Adams shook his head, "Just think about it, the more you know the better the chance you can have at saving someone you want to save. My boss Mr. Saki insisted on it."
Once again Donny was about to protest but stopped once he heard Shredder's name. The feeling of security returned as he heard this. If he suggested it, then maybe he should take the book. "I…I don't think I would want to anger him…I mean if Shredder insisted…maybe he's just looking out for my well-being
"Alright…thanks I guess."
"Come back tomorrow at the same time for our next session," Dr. Adams responded as watched Don leave. "Oh one last thing. Mr. Saki wanted to see you in the dojo. Wouldn't tell me why."
"Oh…ok," Donny nodded as he left the room, curious as to why Shredder wanted him. Still he wasn't going to question it as he headed to the elevator.
Dr. Adams saw as Junko left and then looked down at the test, checking over a couple of the turtle's answers. Both eyes rose as he read the first question and saw the answers. "That's what I wanted to see.
Taking out his phone he dialed a number and waited as it rang. "Yes?"
"Master, Junko is headed your way," the doctor responded.
"Good, how did he do?" Shredder responded with a pleased tone.
He smiled, "He does have the potential from some of the answers I see. He knows the basic kill points. I just need to instruct more knowledge into him."
"Good, Keep me updated," The call ended as Dr. Adams closed his phone.
The elevator dinged as Don walked out and down the long hall to the private dojo. He made a quick stop at his room to drop the book of since he didn't want to worry about losing it. He racked his brain over the fact at what Shredder wanted with him. Usually he never called on the turtle but now here it was. Some of the nerves started to get to him as he neared the sliding door.
Confusion washed over the turtle as he saw an empty dojo, no one in sight. "Hmmm…" he said as he walked in and slid the door closed. "Hello!" he called out, hoping someone could hear. Maybe he arrived early and Shredder hadn't arrived yet.
Walking further in Donny kept looking around, trying to spot anything to indicate someone was there. His body froze as his ninja senses kicked in, he was being watched. A soft thud sounded behind him, turning swiftly in fighting stance, he was surprised to see no one there. His body stiffen once a sharp metal point touched his neck.
"Oh no…I'm dead," Donny thought to himself as both eyes squeezed shut, waiting for the ending blow.
"You're slipping Junko," A familiar voice stated as the metal point was withdrawn.
Donny then turned around and relaxed some as he saw Shredder, it was him who surprised him. "What…why did you…"
"I was testing you," Shredder stood with both hands behind his back. "And apparently your skills are slipping."
Disappointment filled the olive green turtle, both eyes looking down at the wood floor. "I'm…sorry." He was disappointed that he failed such a smiled unofficial test.
"Don't be, you haven't had time to train fully," Oroku smiled. "But back to the issue at hand."
This caught Don's attention, "Oh right…you wanted to see me?"
"It's about last night," he raised a hand when he saw Don about to speak, silencing him. "You were lucky to save one of our staff, but it made me realize something. Tell me Junko, if there was more than one intruder, do you think you could have handled them?"
"Well…I…" Don started to talk but then hesitated. He thought about it. It's been a long while since he found himself in a real fight that he wasn't sure if his skills were what they used to be. Plus adding in the fact that the spy had Gavin in a life or death situation. Now he imagine that there was many more spies that were there. The only reason why he killed the guy was because he was distracted and Don acted quickly. But now add in the fact that if there was more and they were focused on him. His body trembled as he thought of the possible outcome, knowing now he might have not been able to do anything. "No…I don't think I could."
"That's what I thought," Shredder responded with a sigh, before taking a couple steps closer. "But worry not, that's not going to happen."
Don looked up into Shredder, his neutral face looking at his. The same face that gave the turtle the feeling of security. "How?"
"I'm going to get you back into fighting shape."
"What!?" Donny's eyes widen at the statement, shocked at what he just heard. "Did I…hear that right? Did Shredder…say he's going to train me?" he thought. "You're…you're…"
"Yes, I'm going to personally teach you so you can retain any loss skills. And also maybe increase your full capabilities," he explained and placed a hand on Don's shoulder.
"But…why?"
"I can't always be there to help you, so I want to know that you can take care of yourself when I'm not around. And plus after seeing my Foot ninjas treating you the way they did…I can't trust them with this task. I don't want them to sabotage you in anyway, so that's why I'm going to do this personally."
Don was stunned silent as he heard this, Shredder was serious about training him. But then this made him think about something else. "But…I thought I was going to work in the labs only?"
"You are, this is only a precaution in case someone may storm the labs and try to take anything. Chances are the future spies could be tougher and skilled, and you'll need to be stronger in order to handle those possible threats."
Don was silent once more as he heard this, looking down at the floor. It was a good point, but he still wasn't sure. He didn't really like to fight, but only did it when it was necessary. But the thought of a threat he could face kept coming up to him. Shredder wouldn't lie to him about this kind of stuff…would he?
He looked up when he felt both of Shredder's hands on his shoulders. "I won't force you if you don't want it, it's your choice."
The tone of his voice threw Donny in a complete loop, stunning him more. Now he had a choice, and instantly he didn't want to do it. But yet he didn't answer, because part of him considered it. Shredder's words were true and if he wanted to avoid anything to happen to him then he would need training. And since he Oroku as offering it.
Yet part of him kept saying no, that nothing good could come from this. It was a tug of war in his mind as he debated over this fact. "I shouldn't be considering this…he's my enemy…or is he? Nothing good can come from his teaching…but…there's no one else who can help me. I don't trust anyone else but Shredder…He…he's the only one that has been nice to me…and he hasn't given me any reason to doubt him at all…" He kept struggling in his mind, going back and forth.
His body trembled as he moved back a couple of feet, surprising Shredder a bit, but he remained silent. Donny looked at the floor as he took a few breathes, then he moved down to the floor, sitting down on his legs, resting his hands on his knees. Both eyes closed as he took a breath and opened them, looking up at Shredder. "What do we do first?"
A/N: Hope you like. Once again i'm very sorry for the long wait. I thank all those who waited for this chapter to come out. I may be working on two other stories at the moment but I'll try to devote my time to this the best I can. Till next time.
