Lisbon came in the medical clinic for her 7 month appointment the next week. She gave her name and insurance while Jane was parking the car trying to finding space among the obviously busy clinic. She insisted he didn't have to drop her off but he wouldn't take no for an answer so she let him. She had started her maternity leave the week before and Agent Sanders would take over her spot for the next few months. As much as she loved Jane, he sometimes drove her crazy being overprotective now that she was staying at home, so she sent him out on errands either shopping for groceries to satisfy her cravings or basic supplies needed for the house. That way she could get a little peace and sometimes she decided to call Grace Rigsby for old time sake. She really considered Grace as a good friend now.
"Hello, Lisbon, I can still call you that. It's just still hard to get used to calling you Mrs. Jane."
"Of course, I just wanted to call." Lisbon stated sitting in the chair in her living room.
"It's good to hear from you. Where's Jane?" Grace asked.
"He's going on errands."
"Driving you crazy during maternity leave."
"Yes, indeed. I just started last week. Now I'd rather do desk work at the office." Lisbon laughed at the thought. "He's asking how I am every five seconds."
"Wayne did that the last three months and I sent him on errands too. He'd stop at the taco truck everytime though." Grace laughed. "I still can't believe you and Jane are married and having a baby. It's so surreal. I knew there was something through the years."
"Yeah, we just took a long time to admit to ourselves how we felt."
"We're so happy for you now." Grace said.
"How are the kids?" Lisbon asked.
"Great. They are getting big. Maddie's really walking. Ben will be starting kindergarten soon." Grace described.
"That's great! I'm happy for you as well." Lisbon said happily. She was really happy for Wayne and Grace. It took a long time for them to really be happy as well, considering a rule kept them apart and other circumstances along the way.
"Last time we talked you mentioned he's working on that cabin you got married in front of. I still can't see Jane building a house."
"Tommy came to help him and he's hired some help. It's almost livable. We just need furniture."
She found a couple of empty seats finally and she set her purse on the other chair to save the seat for Jane. She did appreciate him coming to every appointment because as the father it was important for him to come. He revealed to her he wanted to come every time as he confessed he didn't always make it to Angela's appointments as he sometimes was gone or had clients during that time. He wanted to be there all the time now because he didn't want to miss anything. She turned her head and turned to see a young pregnant blonde haired teenager beside her. "Hi." the girl responded.
"Hi." Lisbon responded back. The girl looked to be alone and she had never seen her there before. She had seen some of the same people all the time. She never talked to any of them.
"This is my first time here." The girl responded.
"I figured. I haven't seen you before." Lisbon admitted and decided to go ahead and talk since the girl seemed interested in talking to her.
"I just moved here. I'm Alex. Well, Alexandra, but everyone calls me Alex."
"Teresa. Are you waiting for someone?" Lisbon asked.
"No, it's just me. Are you waiting for someone?" Alex asked.
"I'm waiting for my husband. He's taking a long time to park the car." Lisbon noticed. "He dropped me off."
"Oh, this is my first baby. So, I'm a little scared." Alex admitted putting her hand on her stomach.
"This is the first one for me too. I'm nervous too." Lisbon admitted.
"Oh, really?" Alex looked surprised at Lisbon's revelation.
Soon Lisbon noticed Jane finally walking through the door. "There's my husband." Lisbon stated She signaled to Jane and he spotted her and came to her. Lisbon took her purse and set it down under her chair. "That's your husband!" Alex asked grinning obviously surprised she was married to him. Lisbon had to admit she enjoyed when the women here at the clinic would notice him as soon as he walked in and he never paid any attention to them. He just looked at her and she still couldn't believe it.
"Hi." Jane sat down. "I'm her husband. Patrick." Jane responded hearing Alex's comment and then turned to Lisbon. "There were hardly any spaces."
"Are you sure you don't want to know what the baby's going to be?" Lisbon asked. She was getting anxious and impatient over not knowing. She never was a particularly patient person especially when she didn't know what Jane was up to during the years.
"I'm sure." Jane answered. She knew Jane loved the element of surprise.
"Oh, I'm here to find out." Alex piped up look at the couple.
After waiting ten minutes, the nurse came out and called "Alexandra Fields" Alex took her bag and followed the nurse into the room.
"That girl is young." Jane noted.
"She came alone." Lisbon mentioned. "I feel bad for her."
The same nurse came in and called, "Teresa Jane." The technician came in and did the ultrasound. Then the doctor came to explain the results. "Well, Teresa and Patrick the baby looks good. It's growing normally."
"Are you sure?"Lisbon worried. She still was concerned about the possibility of something going wrong. She didn't know why, but she supposed because of how Jane would deal with it if something did go wrong. She had never experienced the loss of a child like he had.
"Everything's good. You're healthy and it seems like you're doing all the right things." Dr. Barnes explained. "You will need to come every two weeks from now on and then as you are getting closer to delivery every week."
After their appointment, Jane and Lisbon came out of the ultrasound room back into the waiting room. They had planned to go to the store and go pick out furniture for the baby. Lisbon walked up to Alex who was waiting in the same chair. The girl went in before her appointment. She figured her ride hadn't arrived yet. Lisbon instantly went up to Alex and Jane followed. "Alex, is your ride coming?" Lisbon asked concerned.
"I called 15 minutes ago." Alex admitted. "It usually takes a few minutes."
"Who are you waiting for?" Jane asked.
"Um...I...well, my social worker at the group home." Alex reluctantly answered obviously embarrassed over the situation. This girl was in the system and living in a group home instead of having a regular home life. She knew that at some point in his life when he was young, Jane had spent some time at a home in Carson Springs he had revealed during the Eileen Barlow Red John case. He had never told the specifics of what happened when he was young, but she assumed it had something to do with his father.
"Oh, how long will they be?" Lisbon asked.
"It depends on how busy she is with the other kids, I suppose." Alex admitted. "I've grown used to waiting for rides."
"We could give you a ride." Lisbon offered.
"I...I don't know." Alex hesitantly answered appearing as though she was reluctant of strangers.
"While you decide, I'm going to the ladies room." Lisbon headed to the restroom across the waiting room.
"It's okay, you can trust us. We're not going to hurt you. We work for the FBI, well most of the time. She's on maternity leave. Teresa likes to help people, that's what she does." Jane explained looking at Alex.
"You don't look like the FBI." Alex looked at Jane confused.
"So, I'm told. I do work for them though I've cut down a little. I'm a consultant. Teresa's the agent." Jane explained.
"Your wife's a cop?"Alex questioned. Jane nodded positively. "Who do you consult?" Alex asked confused.
"Well, I can show you. You're 16-18 years old. You're not there for disciplinary purposes, are you? No. You do have a sense of guilt about something." Jane admitted.
"How'd you know that?" Alex asked surprised at his read on her.
"That's what I do. I observe people. I help the agents find the killer of murders." Jane admitted.
"Oh, that's good you do that. I'm 16." Alex stated. Lisbon soon came out of the restroom and back by Jane and Alex. "So, do you need a ride, Alex?" Lisbon questioned.
"Okay, I'll go with you. Your husband said I can trust you and thank you." Alex admitted. "I just need to call my worker." Alex grabbed the phone she brought with her and had dialed the number. She went out the door outside so as not to disturb others. After a couple of minutes, she came back in talking. "They're nice people, Brenda. I'm fine. I can't wait all day. Bye." She put her phone in the bag she was carrying. "She said I can go with you." Alex told Jane and Lisbon.
Jane went to the parking lot and drove the car up. He then opened the passenger door and back door. The two women went in the car and closed their doors. Jane started driving out the parking lot.
"I come from Chicago. I was born there. The home I stayed there became too full and so they sent me here to Austin." Alex described.
"I'm originally from Chicago too. I have a brother and his family who lives there and niece." Lisbon admitted turning her head back to look at Alex in the backseat.
"Cool. Do you know where you're going? I can help if you need it." Alex stated. "Turn right at the stoplight." She told Jane the directions.
"I think I can manage." Jane answered.
"They've tried to get me in foster homes, but nobody really wants a teenager much less a pregnant teenager. I messed up once."
Jane arrived at the group home and parked in front of a large brick building. "Thank you for the ride. I appreciate it." Alex said taking her seat belt off.
"Nice to meet you, Alex." Lisbon as she wrote her number on a piece of stationary paper. "Here's my number if you need a ride or just want to talk." Lisbon handed the paper to Alex who took it and put it in her purse.
"Okay. Good to meet you Teresa and Patrick." Alex said getting out of the car and walking on the sidewalk towards the building. Jane waited until she entered to leave.
"Poor girl, she must not have anybody." Lisbon said sadly. "I feel sorry for her."
"I know. Being in the system is not an enjoyable experience as I well know for a brief time. Alex seems like a good kid. She's there because she had no choice." Jane confessed.
"Did she tell you that?" Lisbon asked surprised.
"No, that's what I observed. She's scared and lonely. That's why she reached out to you. She saw that you seemed trustworthy and a good person. I knew that when I met you. Shall we go shopping?" Jane asked grinning turning to go out to the road towards the store.
"Yes, I suppose." Lisbon stated. She couldn't stop thinking about Alex. They girl must have gone through countless homes and not knowing a real family. She felt very blessed to have a family and Jane and people who cared for her. Alex was a girl with no support system and no one to rely on.
They arrived at the same baby store she and Annie looked in during Tommy and Annie's visit. They called Annie and explained they would buy the large furniture.
Jane and his helpers including Tommy finished the rooms designated for the nursery and master bedroom. They just basically needed to paint and decide on colors and a theme for the nursery. They decided to keep it gender neutral as they were unaware of the gender. Even though she had dreamt of a girl. They couldn't be sure. Her dream had mostly come from a fear of Jane leaving again. She knew now he was committed to her and their child.
Jane and Lisbon toured the aisles of baby items until they came to the cribs set up on large platforms. Some of them were regular cribs to cribs that converted to beds.
"What happens to the girl's baby?" Jane questioned wondering the future of Alex's child.
"I suppose it would go in the system like her. They'll probably try to find for it. The baby will have more of a chance of getting a foster family or adoptive family. I don't know everything it entails." Lisbon admitted. "Do you like this one?" Lisbon pointed to a wood crib that transformed into a bed. "Though it's quite expensive." She stated observing the price.
"Expense doesn't matter when it's our child. You will get what you want." Jane noticed her liking the crib. "You remember Trina?" Jane asked.
Lisbon recalled the 12-year old girl who confessed of killing her father out of self defense. Lisbon was determined to go by the rules of turning her to the juvenile detention center. She was stuck in the middle of following what she knew she had to do and Jane's reasoning for not admitting the girl. Jane made her realize that sometimes it was okay to bend the rules and follow her conscience. Trina, like her had the unfortunate consequence of having an abusive father.
"Yes. You convinced me not to admit her to juvenile detention center." Lisbon stated.
"I was so proud of you. You ended up doing the right thing. She had an aunt to care for and would help her." Jane recalled.
"May I help you?" A clerk came up to them noticing them looking at the cribs.
"We're interested in this one." Jane stated looking up and pointing to the crib.
They also went ahead and bought a matching changing table. They also looked at strollers and bought a car seat combination stroller.
"Congratulations." The clerk said as they checked out. They also did a gift registry while there as well for guests of the baby shower in a couple of weeks.
Lisbon had misty eyes as she and Jane walked out the door. "This baby is so fortunate to have two parents to care for her/him. We need to be thankful for our blessings."
Feedback is Appreciated. Alex, the girl waiting in the clinic wouldn't get out of my mind and so I needed to include her. Blood for Blood has one of my favorite Jane and Lisbon conversations of Jane telling it was okay to bend the rules and go with what was really right at that time.
