"Gotta ask ya somethin'.." Daryl's voice was gruff in my ears as we walked back toward our side of the prison.

"Yea?" I looked over at him as our footsteps made quiet echoes through the prison halls.

"If Rick woulda killed 'em, could you have handled it?" Daryl asked, his eyes catching mine.

"Would've." I nodded. "Sometimes you gotta act first, think later. I get that, I really do... But..." I trailed off, trying to find my words.

"But?" Daryl asked, adjusting his crossbow as we walked through the door leading to the room before our cell block.

"But... I guess they deserve a fightin' chance, too.. You know? I can tell. They ain't like the other two." I said firmly.

"You're right.. I see it, too. They ain't like 'em, but they could be." He said, stopping to open the big metal door to the cell block.

"That's why we watch our backs." I mumbled, walking through. I turned back to him as he closed the door. "They might not be killers, but I still ain't trustin' them."

"That's my girl." Daryl grunted, walking away. I felt a light smile tug at my lips, as I made my way over to Hershel's cell.

"Hershel stopped breathing,." Carl announced, his voice edged with worry. "Mom saved him."

"It's true." Glenn half whispered, the thankfulness in his eyes. Daryl, T, and I hovered in the doorway, checking in.

"Still no fever." I heard Lori mumble softly. Thank God.. Rick walked over toward the older man, touching Beth and Maggie on the back, reassuring them that it was going to be okay. T stepped into the room, and suddenly I heard whispers, mumbles. Everyone began leaning in, trying to hear what Hershel was saying.

Carl was standing in front of Daryl and I. Wrapping my arms around Carl's shoulders, I rested my chin on the top of his dad's hat. I felt his hand grab my arm, as we watched Hershel laying on the bed. Suddenly, his eyes fluttered a bit, and Lori moved forward. His eyes were open, and he was looking around at all of us. I wanted to cry out in happiness.

"Daddy?" Maggie sounded as if she were on the verge of a breakdown.

"Daddy!" Beth's voice was full of excitement, and I saw Rick lean down, taking the handcuffs off of their father. "Daddy.." Beth whispered, both girls in tears, as Hershel reached his hand up toward Rick. Tears welled up in my own eyes as I watched Rick grab Hershel's hand and drop to his knees.

Lori left the room, and Rick ushered Beth over to take his place beside Hershel as he walked out after Lori. Feeling extremely overwhelmed, I gave Carl a tight squeeze, and turned to Daryl. His eyes met mine and I remembered why I had fallen in love with him. Touching his face, I rubbed my thumb over his bottom lip. Watching me with those deep blue eyes, he tilted his head slightly.

"Perimeter check?" I asked in a half whisper.

"Check out the fences. Then rest up, had a long day." He agreed, and we walked toward the door leading to the yard we had cleared out coming into the prison.

"Indeed we have." I mumbled, grabbing my hunting knife from my belt. "You gonna take this thing off or what?"

"Hn." Daryl grunted, reaching over and unlatching the belt. "Easy, huh?"

"Maybe I just like it when you put your hands on me." I teased. He shook his head.

"Trouble, girl. Askin' for trouble." Daryl growled, grabbing me suddenly. He held me firm in his grip, one hand on the small of my back, the other on the nape of my neck. "Gonna get us in trouble."

"Hell, might as well." I whispered. "We're all gonna die anyway." He chuckled at my words, before leaning down to my face. I met his kiss, greedily. I soaked up what affection I got from him, even just a little kiss. His teeth scraped against my bottom lip, and I grabbed the back of his hair.

His tongue slid over mine, as I pulled him closer to me. Closer, we were pressed against each other so hard, I thought we might melt into one. I kissed him faster, harder, as his hand went up the back of my shirt. Pulling me closer. Can we get any closer than this? My heart was pounding as he kissed me roughly, before pulling away. Leaning in, he pecked my lips, before letting me go.

"Trouble." I breathed, trying to catch my breath.

We were all down at the gates, moving the vehicles up toward the prison for better access. Carol was backing up one of our trucks, as we waited for Rick to give us further instruction on where the vehicles were going. The morning was warm, and the sun in the sky made me happy. The prison was looming over us, but to me it looked like a five star hotel.

"Okay, let's get the other car in." Rick said, turning toward us. "We'll park 'em in the west entry of the yard."

"Good." Daryl growled, tossing the chain in his hands."Our vehicles camped out there look like a giant vacancy sign."

"After that, we need to load up these corpses so we can burn 'em." Rick stopped, looking around.

"Gonna be a long day." T mumbled, and I laughed.

"Yesterday was a long day." I said, hand on my hip. "And the day before that. And before that."

"Where's Glenn and Maggie? We could use some help." Carol chirped in, looking tired already.

"Up in the guard tower." Daryl pointed, looking at me with a smirk.

"The guard tower?" Rick looked up at the tower. "They were just up there last night."

"Glenn! Maggie!" Daryl hollered at the tower. I giggled, trying not to burst into laughter. Noise came from above us, as the door opened and Glenn appeared, buttoning his jeans.

"Hey!" He called down to us, and I could see the image of Maggie getting dressed behind the glass. "What's up guys?" I giggled again, as Rick let out a chuckle.

"You comin'?" Daryl asked, hands on his hips. I tried to hold in my laughter.

"What?" Glenn called back down to us, and I had to look away. I could hear T and Carol snickering along with Rick and I.

"You comin'?" Daryl asked again, and I glanced over at him. The way he was standing made me grin. My sexy man... I gave him a smile, and he half smiled back. His eyes went back up to Glenn. "Come on, we could use a hand!"

"Yeah, we'll-we'll be right down!" Glenn called, as I snorted out a half laugh, turning to follow Daryl toward the cars.

"Hey, Rick..." T's voice made me turn around to see the prisoners walking down toward us.

"Come with me." Rick mumbled, and I followed behind the guys. We reached the prisoners and Rick stopped. "That's close enough. We had an agreement."

"Please, Mister. We know that." Mustache whined. Maggie and Glenn exited the door behind them, watching with weary eyes. "We made a deal, but you gotta understand... We can't live in that place another minute, you followin' me? All the bodies..people we knew. Blood, brains everywhere. There's ghosts!"

"Why didn't ya move the bodies out?" Daryl asked.

"You should be burnin' them." T advised.

"We tried, we did!" Mustache cried.

"The fence is down on the far side of the prison. Every time we drag a body out, those things just line up." Oscar explained. "Droppin' a body, just runnin' back inside."

"Look, we had nothin' to do with Tomas and Andrew, nothin'!" Mustache walked toward Rick. "You tryin' to prove a point, you proved it bro. We'll do whatever it takes to be part of your group. Just please, please.. Don't make us live in that place."

"Our deal is non-negotiable. You either live in your cell block or you leave." Rick's voice was firm.

"I told you this was a waste of time." Oscar said quietly. "They ain't no different than the pricks who shot up our boys. You know how many friends, corpses, we had to drag out this week? Just threw 'em out like... These were good guys. Good guys who had our backs against the really bad dudes in the joint, like Tomas and Andrew. Now we've all made mistakes to get in here, Chief. And I'm not gonna pretend to be a saint. But believe me, we've paid our due. Enough that we would rather hit that road, than to go back into that shit hole."

Rick turned and looked at Daryl, who shook his head softly. I knew the deal. We couldn't. We just couldn't let them in with us. Not yet, it hadn't been enough time. Maybe farther along down the road, if they had gone without incident, then maybe Rick would have given them more lee way. But right now, it was just too soon, and they were asking for too much from us. Trust doesn't build over night, and just because you say you aren't a bad person, doesn't mean you are a good person either.

"Then you can go." Rick said blankly, and the two men followed us down to the entrance gates. They stepped through without a word, and Daryl locked gate behind them. Mustache was holding onto the fence, and Oscar was just looking at Daryl with disappointment.

"Come on, dude.." Mustache tried, as Daryl and I walked away.

"Are you serious?" I heard Rick asking, as we rounded the corner to see him talking to T-Dog. "You want them livin' in a cell next to you? They'll just be waitin' for a chance to grab our weapons, you-you wanna go back to sleepin' with one eye open?"

"I never stopped." T admitted. "Bring them into the fold. Look, we send them off packin', we might as well execute them ourselves."

"I dunno, Axel seems a little unstable." Glenn said, and I almost laughed.

"He's pleadin' his case." I offered, and they all looked at me. "I'd be unstable, too."

"After all we've been through.. We fought so hard for all of this, what if they decide to take it?" Carol asked, her face serious.

"It's just been us for so long." Maggie agreed. "They're strangers, I don't...it feels weird all of a sudden havin' other people around."

"You brought us in." T-Dog tried, looking at Maggie.

"Yeah, but you turned up with a shot boy in your arms, didn't give us a choice." Maggie responded, her voice soft.

"They can't even kill walkers." Glenn sounded worried.

"Ain't that the truth." I shook my head.

"They're convicts. Bottom line." Carol said surely.

"Those two might actually have less blood on their hands than we do." T said quietly, looking at Rick. I sighed.

"I get guys like this." Daryl said, causing me to look over at him. "Hell, I grew up with 'em. They're degenerates, but they ain't psychos. I coulda been in there with them, just as easy as I'm out here with you guys."

"So you're with me?" T half asked, half said.

"Hell no. Let 'em take their chances out on the road, just like we did." Daryl growled, and I had to look down so I wouldn't laugh.

"What I'm sayin', Daryl-" T started, but Rick cut him off.

"When I was a rookie, I arrested this kid. Nineteen years old, wanted for stabbin' his girlfriend. The kid blubbered like a baby during the interrogation, during the trial. Suckered the jury. He was acquitted due to insufficient evidence, and then two weeks later, shot another girl. We've been through too much. Our deal with them stands." Rick said, walking back toward the prisoners.

He said a few words to them, then we went out and piled up the bodies of the walkers we'd killed. It took us a while, but we managed to get it done in decent timing. The heat was bearing down on me, making me feel like I weighed two hundred pounds. Trudging up the hill, I listened to Rick barking out instructions to us.

"Move the cars to the upper yard." Rick said, and Daryl threw Glenn the keys. "Point them facin' out, they'll be outta the way but ready to go if we ever need to bail. We'll give the prisoners a week's worth of supplies for the road."

"They might not last a week." T-Dog mumbled.

"Their choice." Rick replied.

"Did they really have one?" T asked.

"Hey, hey!" Rick stopped him. "Who's blood would you rather have on your hands? Maggie's? Glenn's? Or theirs?"

"Neither." T-Dog said, walking away. I walked down to the fence with Glenn, watching Daryl hop onto his bike. Axel was yelling something about how he could help fix up the motorcycle, but I could barely make out his words over the roar of the engine. I looked at Glenn.

"I see that look on your face. You think this is wrong." Glenn tilted his head a little.

"No... Think if they wanted to be in the group, they should've proved it. Stayed. Earned trust, not begged for it." I looked at Glenn. "They ain't gonna make it, but they should've thought 'bout that before runnin' off from their cell block."

"Exactly." Glenn nodded. "I just... I don't want to take any chances, you know."

"I know." I nodded, as we walked back up toward the others. Rick gave Glenn the supplies to give the prisoners, and I walked with Maggie over to the car she was about to move. "Mind if I ride along?"

"Of course not, hop in!" Maggie grinned, and I opened the door, jumping into the passenger seat. "The boys are goin' to the outer fences." She said, watching Glenn catch up with Rick and Daryl.

"Whoa, look." I pointed to the door I had just seen open. Maggie looked over just as Hershel walked out on crutches. Lori was in front of him, holding out her hand, as if to give him a safety net. Beth and Carl were behind him, making sure he didn't lose his balance and fall backward.

Maggie stopped the car, and we both got out, walking toward Hershel and the others. I looked back down toward the fences, to see the guys looking up our way. Hershel looked content, his leg not holding him back. I walked closer to Maggie and squeezed her hand. She looked over at me.

"Look at him." She whispered.

"Told you we'd return the favor." I whispered back, laying my head on her shoulder. I felt her head lean on mine, as she let out a little laugh. I barely even noticed when Carl turned around.

"WALKERS!" I heard Carl yell. My mind began to spin, as I snapped my head over to see them piling toward Hershel and the others.

"Look out!" Beth yelled. I ran forward with Maggie, pulling my gun. I began shooting, but they just kept coming. I could hear Rick yelling, and I saw Hershel make his way over to a fenced area. I ran over to Carl, shooting as many walkers as I could. Glancing over, I heard Beth yell something, and Hershel smacked a walker with his crutches, before hopping inside the fenced area with Beth. They were safe.

"Lori! Here!" I heard Maggie yell. Lori, Carl, and I ran toward Maggie. Everything was happening so fast. Looking back, I couldn't see Daryl anywhere. Dixon... I stayed behind Lori, shooting one more walker before we darted inside the gated area. Walking quickly toward our cell block, suddenly Maggie and Carl jumped around, and I saw walkers coming from the door we were about to walk through. "This way! Come on." She had her hand on Lori's arm, guiding her quickly the other way. I turned behind them, the walkers hissing loudly directly behind me. Lori ran through the door, and I pushed Maggie through, shutting it behind us.

"You all right?" I asked her as we ran.

"Yeah! What the hell is happenin'?" Maggie whispered loudly.

"Dunno.." I shook my head as we kept going.

"I think I hear more!" I heard Carl up ahead.

"Go to-" Suddenly a sharp, loud noise pierced my ears. "The fuck is that?" I asked, but the noise drowned out my words.

"An alarm?" Lori asked, as we kept jogging through. I noticed Lori lagging behind as we rounded a corner, and then she was against the wall, crying out quietly.

"Try to keep up." Maggie was with me at her side.

"Somethin's not right." Lori said with a pained voice.

"Are you bit?" Maggie asked, leading her from the wall.

"No, no, no, no..." Lori leaned back onto the wall. "I think the baby's comin'."

"Mom!" I looked over to see walkers coming.

"GO!" I shoved Carl forward and waited for Maggie and Lori to go, before bringing up the rear. I could hear the walkers hissing and snarling close behind me once again as we continued trying to find a way out.

Carl led us on, finding a room. I heard him call out, "In here!", then Maggie was ushering Lori through, and I felt a hand grab my arm, pulling me inside. Carl let me go, and began trying to shut the door. It wouldn't shut, so we ran over to Maggie and Lori. Carl glanced at me, and I could see the worry in his eyes, as his mother tried to regulate her breathing. We hid around the corner, hoping the walkers wouldn't nudge the door and come inside. My gun was in my hands, and I was ready.

Lori let out a gasp and a quiet cry, holding on tight to the chains in front of her. I could tell she was in pain, and I didn't know what to do. Looking at Maggie, I realized she was just as terrified as I was. Lori looked at us, her face pained, as she leaned her head against the chains in her hands. Carl's face was masked with a thick expression of concern, and I couldn't blame him. The alarms were still shrill in my ears.

"What are those alarms?" Lori asked, moving away from the chains.

"Don't worry about it." Maggie tried to keep Lori calm.

"What if it attracts them?" Carl asked, his gun up. We moved further into the back of the room.

"Lori, let's lay you down." Maggie said, trying to keep calm.

"No, baby's comin' now." Lori announced, and my gut wrenched. Something wasn't right.

"W-We have to get back to our cell block! And have Hershel help-" Carl started. but Maggie interrupted him.

"No, we can't risk gettin' caught out there, you're gonna need to give birth to this baby here." Maggie informed, her voice trying to be strong.

"Great." Lori breathed, trying to control her breaths.

"What's she doing? Can she breathe?" Carl was panicking.

"She's fine. Come here, let's get your pants off." Maggie was helping Lori get situated on the floor.

"Okay.." Lori half whispered. "Okay.."

"You're doin' good, Mama." I said, trying to encourage. She gave me a small grin, before the pain hit her again.

"Gonna need help deliverin' your little brother or sister, you up for it?" Maggie asked, looking at Carl.

"Uh, huh." Carl barely spoke, nodding his head. Maggie was checking to see if she was dilated.

"You know how?" Carl asked, his voice fearful.

"Dad taught me, but trust me, it's my first time." Maggie admitted.

"What about you, Spencer?" Carl looked at me. "You know medical stuff, right?"

"I know how to draw blood and wrap wounds. Nothin' about deliverin' no baby!" I shook my head. "But I'll help with what I can."

"I can't tell." Maggie raised up from Lori.

"I gotta push.. I gotta push." Lori said, her voice pained. I helped Maggie lift her from the floor, and she grabbed onto a part of the wall, pushing. "Somebody!" Maggie grabbed her arm. "I'm okay, I'm okay.. I'm okay."

"You're doin' all right, Lori." Maggie was trying to sound encouraging. "Just keep doin' it, your body knows what to do let it do all the work."

"I'm all right..." Lori whispered, followed by a small scream. She was trying not to be loud as she pushed again.

"Lori, stop! Don't push, somethin's wrong!" Maggie exclaimed, and Lori screamed out in pain. Maggie's hand was covered in blood, and I grabbed Lori's hand.

"Squeeze it if you need to, it ain't gonna hurt me." I said, looking her in the eyes.

"Thank you." She nodded. She squeezed my hand hard, and I kept my face straight so she wouldn't think it hurt me. It went on like that for what seemed like forever, Lori was sweating, trying not to push. We laid her down and I noticed the alarms had stopped ringing.

"Mom! Mom, look at me, look at me! Keep your eyes open." Carl was holding her hand.

"We have to get you back to Dad." Maggie said, looking at Lori, then at me.

"I'm not gonna make it." Lori said quietly, her eyes tired.

"L-Lori with all this blood, I don't even think you're fully dilated yet, no amount of pushin' is gonna help." Maggie explained.

"I know what it means." Lori said, her voice still quiet. "And I'm not losin' my baby."

"Right, we gotta lift you, Maggie and I can support your weight while Carl-" I started but she cut me off.

"You gotta cut me open."

"No!" Maggie shook her head. "I can't."

"You don't have a choice." Lori whispered.

"I'll go for help, I can make it-" Carl started to leave.

"No!" We all three looked at him, as he stopped, turning back toward us.

"Look, Carol's the one that practiced that, Dad only taught me the steps, Lori. If I-" Maggie was on the verge of tears.

"Will you, please?" Lori whispered.

"I have no anesthetic, no equipment."

"Carl has a knife." Lori said surely.

"You won't survive." Maggie looked at her face, then at mine.

"My baby has to survive. Please, my baby... For all of us, please. Maggie! PLEASE.. Please." Lori was breathing hard again. Maggie lifted her shirt. "You see my old C-section scar?"

"Lori..." I looked from her to Maggie.

"I can't." Maggie shook her head again.

"You can. You have to." Lori said, then she looked at Carl. "Carl, baby I don't want you to be scared, okay? This is what I want. This is right. Now, you-you take care of your daddy for me, all right? And your little brother or sister. Take care of them-"

"You don't have to do this." Carl said, crying. I felt tears in my eyes, knowing what was to come.

"You're gonna be fine." Lori smiled. "You are gonna beat this world, I know you will! You are smart, and you are strong, and you are so brave." Her voice was cracking as she tried not to cry. "And I love you."

"I love you, too." Carl cried, tears running down his little face. I held Lori's other hand, tears sliding down my cheeks.

"You gotta do what's right, baby. You promise me, you'll always do what's right. It's so easy to do the wrong thing in this world... So.. So if it feels wrong, don't do it, all right? If it feels easy, don't do it, don't let the world spoil you! You're so good." Lori lifted her hand, wiping away his tears, as she cried herself. "My sweet boy, you're the best thing I ever did. And I love you." She grabbed him close, hugging him. "I love you. My sweet, sweet boy, I love you." She let out a sob, before kissing his head. "Okay, okay now. Okay, aghhhh.. Maggie when this is over you're gonna have to-"

"Shh, shh, sh, sh!" Maggie tried to stop her from saying the word.

"You have to do it, it can't be Rick!" Lori shook her head. She looked at me. "Take care of Carl, would you?"

"Yea, yea." I nodded, tears falling from my eyes.

"Please make sure he's never alone." Her voice cracked again.

"I will." I said through my tears. She squeezed my hand.

"All right... All right. It's all right. It's all right." Lori mumbled softly, and I saw Carl hand Maggie his knife. "Good night, love." She whispered, and something in my heart broke into a million little pieces. Rick...

"I'm sorry." Maggie whispered through her tears, before cutting into Lori's stomach. She screamed in pain, and I held her hand tight as she squeezed mine.

"STOP! YOU'RE KILLING HER!" Carl cried, and I kept my eyes on hers. Her eyes shut, and her teeth chattered before her grip went limp, she had passed out going into shock.

"Carl, give me your hand." Maggie was elbow deep in Lori's stomach.

"What?" Carl looked as if he were in shock.

"Carl, please." Maggie replied. "Keep the sack clear, okay? If I cut too deep, I could cut the baby... I see it, I see the uterus.. I'm gonna pull it out... I can't tell if this is the arm or the leg. Okay, we're gonna pull the baby out."

"Okay." Carl whispered. I was still staring at Lori's face. I heard Carl again. "Okay." Maggie pulled the baby out and it wasn't moving. I looked over, Carl and I watching for any sign of life. Maggie flipped it over and began patting its back. Can't be for nothin'... I silently begged the baby to move, and when I heard the first cry, I took a relieved breath. I half smiled, looking over at Carl, who immediately took off his jacket and gave it to Maggie to wrap the baby in. The cries continued from the baby, and Maggie looked up.

"We have to go." Maggie stood, and I let go of Lori's hand, standing beside her.

"W-well we can't just leave her here... She'll turn." Carl said, teary eyed. Maggie reached for her gun with her free hand. Carl shook his head, tears falling. "No."

"Carl..." Maggie tried. He pulled out his gun.

"She's my mom." He said, and Maggie looked at me for a moment before walking away. I stayed where I stood, looking at Carl. For a few seconds he just stared at her. After what felt like minutes, he knelt down and hugged his mother one last time, before standing and aiming the gun at her head. The gunshot was one of the loudest things I had ever heard in my life. He never even looked at me, as he turned and walked away. I followed behind him, feeling sick.

Maggie was waiting as Carl walked past her, and I put my hand on her shoulder, pushing her forward gently. Without a word, we followed behind Carl, and I brought up the rear as we made our way back to the cell block. I took out a lone walker with my knife, and then we were back at the door I had first seen Hershel, Carl, Beth, and Lori come out of before the attack. We walked out of the door, and I could hear Rick speaking, but he stopped when the baby began crying. Everyone seemed to look our way all at once, and Daryl's eyes met mine.

I had my hand on Carl's shoulder as Maggie opened the gated door, leading us out toward the others. Rick was just staring at us and I knew that he knew. The look on his face told me that he knew. I couldn't speak, nothing would come out as we walked toward everyone. Rick had an axe in one hand, his gun in the other, looking at us with questioning eyes as he walked forward.

He dropped the axe as he walked toward us, looking at Maggie then at me. He shook his head, stepping back, then back toward us again, his face changing from questioning to frantic. I looked down, my hand sliding off of Carl's shoulder. I could feel the tears streaming down my cheeks, but I couldn't say a word. I wanted to, but I couldn't.

"Where, where is she? Where is she?" Rick asked, looking at Maggie, who was crying. He walked toward us and Maggie reached out.

"No! Rick, no!" She tried to grab his arm. He was in front of me, and when we made eye contact, he began to cry. Looking at Carl, he bent over, hands going to his knees.

"Awwwww noooo, noooooo. Noooooo.." His 'no's' turned into sobs, and I saw Glenn grab Maggie as she cried. I walked over to Daryl, who grabbed me. My head on his shoulder, I sobbed as I heard Rick collapse on the ground in tears. Feeling Daryl's arms around me should have been comforting, but all I felt was sadness. That feeling in my gut wrenched, as Daryl led me away from everyone.

"Spencer..." Daryl was looking me over for bites or scratches.

"Okay, I'm okay..." I mumbled, looking down toward the fences.

"Know ya just been through hell... But T's gone." Daryl said, looking down at the ground.

"W-what?" I lifted my head, staring at him. His eyes met mine as he looked up.

"We found 'em in the tunnels..." He trailed off. I looked around at our remaining people.

"And Carol?" I asked, noticing she was missing.

"Didn't find her." Daryl shook his head.

"T is dead." I said, looking at Daryl.

"Yea." His eyes were thick with sadness.

"Daryl, I think Imma be sick." I mumbled, pushing past him, farther away from the group. I bent over, heaving, as I threw up.

"Get it out." Daryl mumbled, rubbing my back. I began to cry again, not saying anything. I just needed to cry.
