All That Remains Finale: Take me down to the river bend
(Normal POV)
It was early morning when Clementine was woken by a shake on the shoulders, it was Pete who had woken her.
"Mornin'" he greeted her.
"morning" she said to him as she got up into a sitting position on the couch.
It wasn't a very comfortable couch but it worked for sleeping on.
'better than the floor anyway' she thought.
Realization hit as she realised Blake had slept on the floor all night.
"so he really slept on the floor?" the voice of Nick asked.
"yeah, he said I needed the couch considering my arm" she said as she lifted her arm for emphasis.
It was better than yesterday, a dull pain but bearable.
"sorry 'bout that by the way" Pete apologized.
"it's fine, are you going to wake him?" Clem asked.
Nick walked over to Blake and shook him gently awake.
Blake mumbled a little bit before he sat up, "geez, I didn't think you meant it by first light" he joked as he yawned.
"it is the best time to get things done, 'specially in this day and age" Pete explained.
"yeah, seize the day" he said as he sat up.
Blake stretched out and unstiffening his body.
"a little help please" he asked Nick with an extended hand.
Nick helped him off the ground, Blake wincing a little after stepping on his injured foot, his right foot to be exact.
"son of a..." he muttered under his breath.
"any better?" nick asked, he seemed guilty still for being the cause of the injury.
"it's fine, give me another day or two I'll be back to normal" he smiled, obviously not too worried about it.
"anyway, when do we head out?" Blake asked the Cabin survivors.
"after we get a bite to eat, we're off to the river" Pete explained as he headed to the kitchen.
"alright, sounds good" Blake said as he followed Pete.
Clem and Nick followed soon after.
%%%%% on the way to the river %%%%%
They were all walking down the path to the river, it was riddled with tress but there was plenty of room to walk in the dense woods.
Nick had stopped back to relieve himself as Clem, Blake and Pete went on ahead.
"So how ya' holding up? I heard you got an earful from Rebecca last night" Pete asked clementine, trying to pass the time.
"once you get her goin' there's no bringing her back" he commented.
"what's her problem?" Clementine wondered in false question, she knew exactly what her problem is.
"well, she's got a lot on her mind, lately. Bringing a baby into a world like this?" he sympathised with her.
"anyone would in her case" Blake joined in.
"ain't that the truth?" Pete asked in rhetoric.
"so, how much further until the fishing traps?" Clementine asked, she was also glancing at the rifle Pete was holding.
Pete took notice of this.
"anyone teach either of you how to shoot?" Pete wondered, speaking mostly to Clem.
"and by that I mean proper" he added.
"My friend lee taught me" Clementine said with a smile, she still fondly remembered the day Lee taught her.
'you're gonna need to learn how to protect yourself' lee's words echoed in her mind.
They came to a barbed wire fence that had a v-shaped opening in it, allowing the three to squeeze through.
"that's good. It's important nowadays" he seemed satisfied with the answer.
"I've had some training on how to shoot a pistol and a rifle, but I prefer a crossbow" Blake said, pointing to his crossbow that was holstered on his back.
"why's that?" Clem wondered.
"Crossbows don't make much noise, I don't particularly like loud noises" he explained.
"pretty helpful for not getting spotted too" Pete explained.
"that too" the dark haired teen agreed.
"you know Nick was about your age when I first took him huntin'" Pete began to reminisce, talking to clementine.
"came across this beautiful 13-point buck just standin' there on the ridge line" putting his hand out for emphasis.
"the boy takes the rifle… lines up the shot just like I taught him… then I hear him start whinin'" he explained, raising the rifle and lowering it.
"he turns to me and he says 'I can't do it. I can't shoot it, uncle Pete. Please don't make me shoot it'" he continued, making a slight pleading voice when telling them what Nick said.
Clementine just smiled a little at the image in her mind, Blake smiled a little too.
"hey, why didn't you wait?" they heard the voice of Nick as he caught up with him.
"you want us to sit around while you piss on a tree? You know where the river is, boy" Pete stated the obvious.
"anyway, so I grab the gun out of his hand before this big buck runs of when BANG! The gun fires" Pete explained even further, Nick looked displeased with the story he was telling.
"the boy nearly gut shot me. And of course the buck gets away" he said with disappointment.
"what're you goin' and tellin' her this shit for?" Nick questioned, irritated, it seemed to be s sensitive issue.
"because you shot Blake here yesterday, tryin' to let 'em it's nothing personal with you" Pete explained, cool-headedly.
"why are you always givin' me a hard time?" Nick wondered.
"because you're always givin' everyone else a hard time" Pete replied sternly.
"Pete, come on he already apologized you don't need to grind him on this any further, we explained this last night" Blake said defending Nick.
"you're always tryin' to embarrass me" Nick said, trying to make a point.
"you're doing a good enough job of that on your own" Pete retorted, annoyed with his attitude.
Nick seemed irritable and pushed his uncle out of the way with his shoulder.
"leavin' us again?" Pete questioned.
"I know where the fucking river is!" Nick spat back, very irritated by his uncle.
Blake looked at Pete, he wasn't impressed by his behaviour.
"I'm going up ahead" he said as he followed Nick down the track.
"so anyway… I found that buck later that season. Shot it right in the neck. Brought it up to my sister's figurin' she'd want to freeze some of the meat… nick didn't speak to me for weeks" he concluded his story.
He sighed a little.
"sometimes you gotta play a role… even if the people you love hate you for it" Pete gave Clem some advice.
"he doesn't hate you" Clementine consoled Pete.
"nick's father wasn't there much, and he was a piece of shit when he was, so it fell to me to keep him in line. Raise him right, meaning I couldn't be nice uncle Pete" he gave her his reasoning.
%%%%% with Nick and Blake %%%%%
"can't believe him sometimes" Nick mumbled.
"you know he means well?" Blake said, speaking up.
"what do you mean?" Nick wondered.
"he may seem like a jerk sometimes but I can see he cares for you, he just doesn't want you making mistakes" Blake tried to give his opinion.
Nick scoffed a little at that.
"I mean it, you were lucky I'm the person I am, anyone else probably would hold a grudge against you" he explained, referring to his accident.
"he could cut me a little slack, you know?" he said in understanding.
"just try not to stay mad at him, it'll be better if you move this experience behind you" the teen said, trying to help.
"what the fuck?" nick said when they approached the river area.
They had reached the riverbed when they saw a sight that was horrifying, enough to make your stomach turn.
Blake had his eyes opened wide as he looked at this gruesome scene.
"UNCLE PETE!" Nick yelled for help.
%%%%% with Clem and Pete %%%%%
They had both heard Nick's call, it was in distress and they both hurried to Nick and Blake.
They surveyed the area and they too were shocked at what they saw.
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph" Pete exclaimed.
Clementine was silently stunned.
The scene showed the riverbank, and with it around about five human corpses, dead and filled with bloody holes, there was a sand bar that allowed access to the other bank.
Pete prodded one of the bodies to check if it was going to come back to life.
He shook his head in disgust, "fulla holes" he breathed.
"who do you think did this?" clementine asked slowly, digesting the information in her head.
"I don't know for sure. But what I do know is that it ain't your average gang'a thugs" he said grimly.
"…think about it, you're Carver what do you do?" Nick said to Pete.
"who's Carver?" Clementine questioned, she had heard the name and wanted to know more.
She had also noticed that Blake had tensed up when he heard that name.
'what does he know that he isn't telling us?' Clementine was suspicious, she had seen him flinch every time the name Carver was mentioned.
Nick and Pete exchanged glances, "check over there" Pete shrugged his shoulder in the direction that lead upstream.
"Be careful, some of 'em might still be movin'" Pete warned.
Clementine checked the body that was closest to her, while Nick checked upstream.
Blake was still surveying the area, he had his crossbow ready.
"I'll keep watch" he said, his breathing was quiet but heavy.
"you okay?" Pete asked in concern.
"… yeah, yeah I'm fine" he stuttered, his facial expression was blank.
His breathing levelled out, he was unsettled, that much clementine could tell.
She too was unsettled, who wouldn't be after seeing this?
"this one's shot too" clementine told Pete, putting her worry aside for the time being.
The body was that of a man, bald and dressed in what looked like a biker outfit, jeans and a leather jacket. He had multiple gunshot wounds, one through his head as well, she didn't have to worry about this one coming back.
"through the head?" Pete inquired.
"yeah" Clementine said in confirmation.
"Check the rest. And look for ammo, we're runnin' low" Pete told the group.
Clementine noticed a more bodies on the sandbar and other shore, she was interested in the one on the sandbar.
"there are more out there!" she informed the others.
"this wasn't no rinky-dink pissin' match" Pete muttered, his face was sorry for what happened here.
"what was it then?" Nick asked Pete's opinion.
"FUBAR" he answered, his face going straight.
Clementine was a little confused behind the meaning of the word, she could guess it had something to do with how bad this situation was.
"Fucked up beyond all recognition" Blake muttered from under his breath.
Clementine now knew the meaning of the word, and she couldn't agree more.
Pete got up and began to walk to the other bank.
"where are you going?! We need to get the fuck outta' here!" Nick said in protest, he looked nervous.
"Gotta' check the rest" Pete said simply.
"what?! Why?!" Nick was confused in his uncle's actions.
"calm down and think about it, son" Pete answered in a annoyed tone.
"Calm down? We've gotta' get out of here, now" Nick tried to convince Pete.
"what if someone's alive, Nick?" Clementine reasoned.
Nick seemed reluctant, "ok, what does it give us if we find someone?" Nick assessed.
"whoever we find just might be inclined to tell us who did this, we gotta do this now" Pete said with finality in his voice.
"stay here, keep searchin' these" Pete instructed the others.
Nick was about to say something when Blake cut him off, "Just drop it, we'll be out of here soon" he suggested to him.
"fine" he conceded, still mumbling under his breath.
"I'll help you check the other side" Blake called to Pete.
"I'll check the sand bar" clementine informed them.
"let's hurry" Pete encouraged.
"you wanna be useful, keep a look-out on that tree-line" Pete told Clementine, "whoever did this might still be out there".
"waitin' for another sucker to stumble across this mess, just like baiting a fish" he warned.
"I'd be more useful with a gun" Clementine pointed out.
"I don't doubt it" he agreed.
"at some point, you guys have to trust me" she told him.
"hell, I trust ya'. Just not everyone's at that point yet, give 'em time" he said honestly
There was a gargling sound that was interrupted with a squishing sound, they turned to see that Blake had impaled the walker that was trapped with a spear, in the head.
"this one's shot into ribbons as well" Blake noted, he seemed a little disgusted.
Pete looked onto the other bank, "dammit. More on that side, you get to work finding anything that will tell us who they are" he instructed Clem as he and Blake started searching the other side.
Pete and Blake were on the far side of the river, Nick was on the side they started from, while clementine was in the middle checking for more people, hopefully survivors.
She walked up the sandbar to check out the lone body that lay in on the muddy ground, he was pale but not reanimated as far as she could tell.
She gasped at the sight of her backpack, she lost it trying to escape the bandits that separated her and christa.
She went to pick it up when a cough startled her, the man was alive, he wore dreadlocks and looked awfully familiar.
"what happened to you…?" clementine whispered.
"Ambush… Rus…" he started before he fell into another coughing fit.
She opened her eyes in shock when she realised who this man was.
"you were in the woods with christa" she addressed him.
"the woman I was with. What happened to her?" she interrogated him.
"please, tell me. Tell me!" she prodded him further, she had an acidic tone to her voice.
"she… got away… please… water" he was speaking in laboured breaths.
She seemed satisfied in knowing Christa got away. She, despite losing her innocence, still held tightly to the way taught her to treat people.
She gave him the drink, cradling his head while she gave him the rest of the water.
"thank you… thank you…" he breathed as he lay on his back, drifting into unconsciousness… or death.
"Pete, watch out!" Blake yelled and a crossbow bolt was fired.
Clementine looked up to see a walker lying dead at Pete's feet, a crossbow bolt piercing its skull. Pete seemed to have a look of relief on his face.
"that was too close" Blake breathed.
"thanks… god damn" Pete found himself chuckling nervously at the situation.
A rifle shot is heard, ringing through the air.
"Shit! Lurkers!" Nick announces to the group.
There were walking corpses all coming from the woods, enveloping the cabin group.
"get your asses over here now!" Pete shouted to Clem and Nick.
"Cover me, I need to reload!" Blake said as he loaded another bolt into his crossbow.
"shit! Come this way!" Nick said as he continued firing his rifle (and missing a few shots).
Clementine was stuck in the middle and had to make a choice.
Pete and Blake were on her right side, they were fighting off the walkers on their side but were almost running out of ammo.
Nick was on her left and was surrounded by the infected, he was missing his shots horribly and couldn't watch his back.
She weighed her options as time seemed to slow down.
She chose to go after Nick and help him, he was on his own and she didn't think he was going to last too much longer. She zig-zagged her way through the walkers and made her way to Nick.
Pete and Blake were being surrounded but when Clem saw that they had run from the scene she breathed a sigh of relief.
"Pete! Blake!" Nick yelled after them.
"we have to go Nick! they'll be fine!" Clementine said as she ran with Nick into the thick woods, desperately running from the herd of undead following them.
